"While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart." St. Francis of Assisi

Dear Saint Raphael Parents & Friends: The taming of the wolf of Gubbio is part of a St. Francis legend. While visiting the town of Gubbio, Francis was told of a fearsome wolf that was terrorizing the town. The wolf had killed livestock and even attacked hunters who had set out to rid the town of the wolf. St. Francis and a companion went out into the forest and were soon faced with the ferocious wolf. St. Francis, known for his ability to communicate with animals, said, “Brother wolf, come make peace with the townspeople. All of your past deeds will be forgiven if you agree to cease harming the animals and people and the townspeople will provide you with food.” The wolf had been abandoned by his pack and had acted out of hunger. St. Francis returned to Gubbio with the wolf and when he asked the wolf to make peace in front of the whole town, the wolf put his paw in Francis’ hand. The wolf lived in peace with the people of Gubbio until his death. I don’t believe that we have a wolf in our midst, but sometimes we choose actions and words that are as harmful to the relationship with those around us as the wolf was to the townspeople. St. Francis asked the people of Gubbio to forgive the wolf, and as peacemakers we are called to forgive those people who may have hurt us or made us feel excluded. I tell this story of St. Francis and the wolf because our children need to have peacemakers, like St. Francis, as heroes. We are working on being peacemakers at school. All of us, myself included, can be better at seeing the goodness in those around us and trying to be kind, forgiving, compassionate, and inclusive. We will be praying to Mary, Queen of Peace, to help us since October is dedicated to Mary, the mother of God. Hopefully, by opening our eyes to the unkind actions or words around us, we can practice being peacemakers. On October 7, you will be able to see your child’s progress report online on School Speak. It is important to check your login and complete the emergency information. Please email or call the office if you need help accessing School Speak. The Halloween Festival is our first major fundraiser on October 29. This takes many hands to be successful and, while it is hard work, it is a day where we all feel proud to be a part of this wonderful community. Please see the bulletin for ideas on where you can help. May St. Francis help us to forgive others and move towards building peace. Lydia Collins, Principal
