Weekly Bulletin for Families Message from the Headteacher Congratulations to Conway on their Sports Day win. Sports Day is always one of the highlights of the year with the 6Cs out in force! There were so many students who took part in multiple events just to gain points for their House and also to challenge themselves – this is fantastic! The House system is such a key part of our School. It is another way for students of all ages to interact with each other and to participate in a range of different events whatever his or her talents. I also love the fact that staff are so invested in their houses. During Wednesday’s Teaching and Learning briefing (for example) Mr Beales and Mr Rearden were both clearly vying for first place - and the final Success Assembly of the academic year, when the winner of the Ixworth Shield is announced, is eagerly awaited by staff and students alike! Finally, I would like to thank Year 10 for the very positive way in which they responded to today’s mock results day and I have great confidence in them as they move into Year 11. I wish them well with next week’s work experience and trust that this will give them an insight into the world of work and also the responsibilities that lie ahead of them. I also look forward to seeing parents again at next week’s Parents’ Forum, University Evening,Year 7 Progress Evening; and to welcoming our new students back to our School during the two Year 6 Induction Days. Well-being PSHE Event - Friday 21 June

On Friday we ran a series of events focusing on student well-being. Across the morning, students undertook a series of workshops and focused on the following: 1. Healthy diet and nutrition: healthy and informed choices;2. Mental health and well-being: looking after our ‘mental health’ and the national ‘Get Talking’ campaign;3. Community relationships: the impact of anti-social behaviour and how to be a good neighbour. The workshops were all age-appropriate and meant that each year group focused on slightly different aspects. Under community relationships for example, Year 10 considered the effects of drugs and gang & knife crime; whereas, Year 8 looked at safety outside of the home and in public places.

The event began with an excellent assembly from Mrs Parker and I have tweeted photos of the slide and the part of the video that was played. We have embraced the campaign that has been launched by McVitie’s and Mind and their wish to normalise discussions around mental health and to ensure that we encourage our students to ‘get talking’. More information can be found here: https://www.mind.org.uk/workplace/corporate-partnerships/current-partners/mcvities/ and their ‘top tips’ include: We know that opening up to someone isn’t always easy. But starting a conversation doesn’t have to be awkward, and being there for someone can make a huge difference.• Starting a conversation. If you’re worried about a friend or colleague then simply asking them how they are feeling is a good start. You don’t have to set aside hours to chat and it doesn’t need to be formal, or even face-to-face. Often people find it easier to talk while doing something else – like on a walk or while cooking, or watching TV.• What should I say? The most important thing to remember is that you don’t need to be an expert. Your friend doesn’t expect you to solve their problems, just being there will mean a lot. Take the lead and ask questions – don’t be afraid to ask how they’ve been.• What shouldn’t I say? If someone has opened up to you try not to brush their problems under the carpet and avoid clichés like ‘it’ll pass’ or ‘what have you got to be depressed about’.• Listen. Listening without judging can be as important and significant as talking. The fear of being judged is a huge barrier for many people speaking out about mental health. You might not understand what they’re going through but that’s ok. • Support. If someone tells you they’re struggling there are professional support options out there. Reassure your friend that it’s ok to ask for help. You might want to help with seeking support too- going along to a GP appointment or looking up information online.
