The u.S. start-up airline code-named “Moxy” has signed a firm order with Airbus to purchase 60 A220-300 aircraft. Moxy is the new airline venture led by David Neeleman, one of the in-dustry’s most innovative entrepreneurs and founder of JetBlue Airways. Plans for Moxy, a low-cost airline, were unveiled at the Farnborough International Air Show in July. “The A220-300 is the right airplane for a new airline that will be focused on passenger service and satisfaction,” said Neeleman. “With a low cost of opera-tion and spacious cabin, the A220 will allow us to provide passengers with lower fares and a high quality, comfortable flying experience. The A220’s ability to operate profitably in thin, underserved markets across a broad spectrum of ranges is unique.” The order was completed the final week of December. Airbus will produce the A220-300 at a new u.S. assembly facility in Mobile, Alabama. Construction of that plant, to be located adjacent to the existing Airbus A320 assembly facility, will begin later this month.

A319neo with CFM LEAP-1A engines wins joint Type Certification from FAA and EASA

The A319neo powered by CFM International LEAP-1A engines has achieved joint Type Certifica-tion from both the uS FAA and European EASA airworthiness authorities. This means that now all three aircraft models – the A319neo, A320neo and A321neo – are certified by the international authorities to operate with the CFM LEAP-1A engine option. This latest achievement follows an intensive certification flight test programme since the A319neo’s first flight in March last year, with this variant having now accumulated over 500 flight hours. The A319neo with LEAP-1A engines is the fifth airframe/engine variant of the NEO family certified over the last three years. Its certification also paves the way for the ACJ319neo (Airbus Corporate Jet) variant to enter service with VIP operators during the first half of 2019. The A319neo is the shortened-fuselage member of Airbus’ game-changing A320neo product line. This airliner can seat 140 passengers in two classes or as many as 160 in a high-density layout with a range of up to 3,750 nautical miles, while its impressive takeoff performance enables it to operate from even the most challenging and remote airports. Meanwhile, the ACJ319neo’s ability to fly eight VIP passengers 6,750 nm or 15 hours will bring much of the world within non-stop range.

After a common and shared journey with Swiss-AS, Evergreen Aviation Technologies (EGAT) has successfully accomplished its go-live with AMOS. EGAT, as the key development partner of Swiss-AS for the AMOS MRO Edition, has signifi-cantly influenced the realization of the advanced AMOS MRO functions. Therefore, implementing AMOS at EGAT was not just “another” project for Swiss-AS. It was the beginning of a strate-gic partnership, which allows Swiss-AS – in co-operation with EGAT – to complete the AMOS MRO Edition and thereby fulfil the functional requirements of the global MRO business seg-ment. EGAT, as a renowned MRO provider with an extensive in-field experience, was the perfect fit to accompany Swiss-AS in this major develop-ment project. The AMOS MRO Edition has been available since the end of 2017 and offers MRO providers a fully-fledged MRO solution covering the specific needs of their maintenance activi-ties. For a timely realization of the new Edition, Swiss-AS allocated a substantial amount of re-sources to build up a dedicated and interdisci-plinary project structure and prioritized MRO specific functions on the development roadmap. The new functions have been well received by the AMOS Community, as well as by the mar-ket. AMOS has been enriched by new modules including Facility/Hangar Planning, Ground-time Management, Finance and Production Control Dashboards, CRM and an in-depth Quotation/Contract Management. EGAT and nine other MRO companies in the AMOS Community had actively participated in scoping workshops for the new functions and shared their expertise and knowledge gained in their daily work as MRO providers. This valuable input, gathered in the early development phases and based on the in-field experience of EGAT, provided a signifi-cant contribution to the successful development of the AMOS MRO Edition.

Semcon will be developing new autonomous solutions to help airports reduce their costs and make them safer. This time, the company will be devising smart ways to clear snow from landing lights using autonomous vehicles. This is a time-consuming job at present that has to be carried out manually. The aim is to allow more airports to stay open. “It may seem like a little thing, but runways are shut down if 15% of their lights are disabled – and that results in significant delays and costs money. There are major benefits to be gained by using autonomous solutions here, not least when it comes to enhancing the safety of both aircraft and personnel,” says Anne Piegsa, technical project manager at Semcon. This pro-ject is being implemented by Semcon in partner-ship with Lundberg Hymas – their tractor will be made autonomous. It will be possible to steer these vehicles remotely from a traffic manage-ment center developed by yeti Snow Technology, and it will be possible to interrupt the clearing of snow to allow an aircraft to land, for example. Extreme vehicle precision is required, and the vehicle has to be able to operate in all weath-ers – these factors present a challenge. Semcon has previous experience of projects involving similar situations, working with yeti Snow Tech-nology, a company co-owned with Øveraasen. A successful solution for keeping entire runways clear of snow using autonomous snow ploughs was demonstrated in Norway last spring. “Smart automation of airports will make it possible to keep more of the smaller, less-busy airports open and retain staff thanks to reduced costs and increased safety,” says Anne Piegsa. The technology is being developed by Semcon for LFV (the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration) as part of its AVAP project, Autonomous Vehicles for AirPorts. Husqvarna, RISE, FlyPulse, Sweda-via and Combitech are also working on various subprojects as part of this initiative. This project will be demonstrated at Örnsköldsvik Airport in a year’s time.

Honeywell is bringing the ease of everyday on-line buying and selling to the aviation parts indus-try with GoDirect™ Trade. The new e-commerce platform will improve access to new and used aircraft parts for airlines, air transport and busi-ness aviation customers by offering transparent pricing and the option to buy inventory directly from its website — a first-of-its-kind experience. “GoDirect Trade represents an evolution in our market and, being backed by a major equipment manufacturer, brings the confidence we need to be one of the early adopters,” said Thomas Noo-nan, director of material and part sales, Standar-dAero Total Aircraft Spares. “This technology will help propel the aviation industry forward into the realm of other e-commerce sites that many of us use each day without a second thought.” Previ-

ously, buyers looking for aviation parts such as avionics, auxiliary power units and more would have to call numerous companies, wait days or even weeks to price a part, and risk buying from a company that did not have the inventory imme-diately in stock. On GoDirect Trade, Honeywell is using blockchain technology to ensure every list-ing includes images and quality documents for the exact part being offered for sale, giving the buyer confidence about purchasing the part. In addition, every part on GoDirect Trade is imme-diately available for sale and shipping. There is no need to wait days or even weeks for the seller to confirm availability. Building upon experience from the Honeywell Aerospace Trading business, GoDirect Trade aims to build stronger connec-tions between buyers and sellers. For example, buyers and sellers can directly contact one an-other via the platform, streamlining the process to ensure both parties are satisfied with the ex-change. As with similar websites in other indus-tries, online reviews of both buyers and sellers are encouraged.
