As Falle points out the funds providedby the federal government's Department ofCommunications were invested in a "13 -yearretrospective study of the history of the JunoAwards, which will assist with forward plan-ning."

This funding also gave CARAS the op-portunity to put together a promotion video, also on the Juno Awards, which CARASdebuted at MIDEM in Cannes last January, which will also be used at the upcoming NewMusic Seminar in New York City. "Thisvideo serves to educate foreign markets on

Stalling of Bill C-60irks INTERGUDelegates from forty countries attendingmeetings of the International CopyrightSociety (INTERGU) are concerned over thestalling in the Canadian Senate of passage ofBill C-60 concerning revision of the CanadianCopyright Act. The powerful internationalbody supports a resolution, urging the Cana-dian government to adopt "without delay"Bill C-60 which deals with the Copyright actand its proposed revision.

Jan Matejcek, President of The Perfor-ming Rights Organization of Canada (PRO -CAN), reports that in a formal resolutionpassed during the 11th Congress of IN-TERGU in Locarno, Switzerland (Mar. 21 to24), "the Canadian government was furtherurged to proceed immediately to the secondphase of copyright revision which only thenwill make the process complete."

As well, INTERGU restated a resolutionpassed during their meeting in Toronto in1981, asking that the Canadian government,"in revising its copyright legislation to do sowith a view to adhering to the Berne Conven-tion for the Protection of Literary and Ar-tistic Works and the Universal CopyrightConvention at the latest levels ofprotection."

As Matejcek points out, "This resolu-tion couldn't be more timely in light of thestalling of the Bill in the Senate."

Other Canadians attending the IN-TERGU Congress and supporting the resolu-tion were Paul Spurgeon, legal counsel forCAPAC, and A.A. Keyes, former Directorof Copyright for the Department of Com-munications.

Look what the FAX dragged in ... ??That's what we need is a little humour fromthe promo peanut gallery. A&M's GeoffKuliwack is out on the road and RandyWells, who used to trod the promo beat, was quick to recognize that no one fromA&M would be calling on us, and besides ...he read my Perils of FAX piece last week. So,loaded with A&M goodies, he bounces in thedoor, and the first thing he says is: "Lookwho the FAX dragged in . . . " (EC: Veryclever!!)

The friendly giant is on his way ... West! It's that time of year once again when thefriendly giant makes his yearly auto trek toAlberta. Be on the watch for him . . . he'sdriving a block -long, white Lincoln, and heeats in the best of places (EC: After theHusky highway stops. . . what else??) and helikes to check out stores ... unnoticed (EC: Ifind that hard to believe!!) and call on Pro-gram and Music Directors. (EC: What doeshe call them??)

The word is "kill" from within ... !!It's disturbing to see the effort being made tokill the vinyl album ... and it's all happening

.. the prophets of doom, the messengers of mediocrity, will be overwhelmed by the new generation of competent, creative, confident artisans and by all those of precedinggenerations who have already demonstrated their freshnessof mind, their talent and their capacity for inspired leader-ship." 1 ' V - Pierre Juneau

from within the industry. There are somewho can't wait to kiss the vinyl album good-bye. But, a word of caution . . . there's beentoo much said . . . and not enough doneabout the compact disc, and their could be adisastrous backlash. Remember ... there arestill an estimated 10 million turntables outthere, and CD hardware has made only a 10percent penetration into the Canadianmarket. There must be a lot of CDs on theshelves. Don't get me wrong . . . I think thecompact disc will be the preferred musicform, but with the impending DAT intrusion,a lot of people are waiting. (EC: What anerve . . I just spent $169.00 for a CD player. . . and it's noisy!)

Now ... that's genuine Cancon country!Did you see the lineup of Canadian countrypeople who will be sitting at the head table atthe Variety Club Salute to Big Country? Whosays we don't have a country star system inthis country . . . and these country enter-tainers are just a few from this burgeoningcountry music industry. The luncheon pro-mises to be one of the better country events ofthe year, so you better eet your tickets FAST,because this one's open to the public andcountry radio stations have been plugging thedate. For tickets, call Jan Porter at416-961-7300 (EC: I wouldn't miss it . . . !!)

Speaking of FAX ... !!Last week, we used a FAXed message toassist us in our coveraee of the CRTC Hear-ing regarding the four Toronto FM stations, and I find that numbers on the FAX machinetend to come out a little distorted. (EC: Haveyou ever thought of getting glasses . . .?)And, besides, we didn't get the full storyanyway. So this week . . . we got all the infor-mation directly front the horses . . . . mouth!(EC: Careful . . . you might get a few nosesout of joint . . .

The "Chief Slug" is rockin' The Grand!!Doug Bennett, the "Chief Slue" of DougAnd The Slues, is strutting his "acting" stuffon the boards of London's (Ontario) GrandTheatre. He's starring in John Gray's RockAnd Roll play, where he takes on thecharacter of Parker, the lead sineer of, whatelse, a rock and roll band. Bennett is anatural for the musical stage and this playRives him the opportunity to show his other"dynamic" side. (EC: Our West Coast artistsare always full of surprises aren't they . . . ??)

Not gay enough ... ??Did you hear about the on -air radio pesonali-t y (EC: I thought they were calledDee-Jays!)who was fired from one stationbecause he was gay and fired from yetanother station because he wasn't gayenough? (EC: I heard it on the radio!)

No MAPL logo on the label copy ... ??I mentioned a couple of weeks ago how a pro-grammer was upset over the independentlabels not displaying the MAPL logo on theirlabel copy. Guess what came in this week? Amajor label mailed out a single by a largerthan life Canadian recording star . . . andthere wasn't any indication of Cancon. (EC: Ithought that was a clever little marketingtrick, a subtle way to attract attention!!)

Old rockers never ... !!I remember a few years ago, quite a few in

fact, when Randy Bachman told me he wouldnever retire from the rock business. "I'll rock`tit I drop . . . " were his words. Well, the"old" rocker is still rocking' and now he hashis own "old" theatre to do it in. Never oneto go the "cheapie" route (remember thatbeautiful studio in his palatial mansion in.Blaine, Washington?), Randy has apparentlybought the old Vogue Theatre in Vancouver(for an estimated one and a half milliondollars (EC: Canadian or U.S.?) and he's go-ing to turn it into a live concert rock videostudio, perhaps the world's first. (EC: I stillwear and treasure my Bachman -Turner Over-drive sweatshirt, which Randy gave me dur-ing a promotion trip to Regina, years ago!)

Cancon guinea pigs ... !!That All -Star Country benefit for theMetropolitan Toronto Police Associationwas a real "barn burner", and Randy Travisis one heck of a nice guy. He has to be a niceguy, putting up with all those "dumb" ques-tions during the WEA press reception. Whatleft me cold at the concert was the discourtesyshown Anita Perras and Tim Taylor, a pairof exceptionally talented and professionalCanadian country folks. It look-ed to me and to quite a few people aroundme, that Tim and Anita were being used tocheck out the sound system. They didn't havea chance to display their talent, and did thedailies pick up on it ... ? Not a chance. Theywere so overcome with the presence of theAmerican stars . . . they didn't have room toeven make mention of the Canadian stars.(EC: In typically Canadian critic fashion!!)

The RPM Cup is under lock and keyThat's a funny story about the theft of theRPM Cup by a well-known retailer, and howit was found on top of a pole in Ottawa (EC:That's really funny . !) It's back and theplayers are shedding their fat, and gettingready for this year's tournament. Q107 is ap-parently out, CBS is in and CHUM is also in,all of which should make it hotter than usualfor the WEA Wackers. This year's playoffswill he played in September, under the lights.(EC: The power of Newman!)

A little Cancon trivia ... ??In answer to that burning question, "What's12 inches lone and white ... ?" The answer isNOTHING!! (EC: I thought you were talk-ing about an albino clarinette!!) Say goodbyeEllie . . . !!

COVER STORY- by Graeme Boyce

Country finally recovers from Urban Cowboy tag Although recent albums by such rock

luminaries as Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and John Cougar Mellencamp have all lent a

degree of commercial credibility to country music in recent years, so did Urban Cowboy;

yet their presence maintained the "tradi- tionalist" fires which launched the careers of

Dwight Yoakam and Randy Travis, while opening the doors for an entire new wave of country artists.

Each generation of music consumers have their own fad to call their own, whether

it's acid rock, punk rock or even soft rock;

country (some say the true roots of rock 'n' roll) music has been around since the days

when cowboys were still taming the wild west and today has carved a niche for itself that has survived over the years without any

marketing expertise, with perhaps one major exception, from the rock world.

"Country went through a real doldrum period after the Urban Cowboy thing because

everybody pushed marketing and volume of sales," explains K.T. Oslin, who most recent-

ly won a Grammy for her vocal performance

on '80s Ladies, "and because it was reaching

more people, everybody tried to crossover and pop -bland it out. So it became nothing,

not country, not pop, not anything." In increasing numbers, music fans are

discovering the seemingly untouched, pure and fresh sound of country, though not only

in its traditional form, as both Oslin and Travis have traded places at the top spots of radio charts since their respective albums

were released last year, displaying the broad

spectrum of tastes prevalent these days. "People are not involved with labels

(like traditional) the way we are in the business that put you in the ballpark of

understanding what you do. `So, who's she

like?' But the public's not interested in that, they couldn't care less. They don't know

Cohen on European tour to support new album

Leonard Cohen's first album in four years, I'm Your Man, has been released in Canada and the U.S. by CBS. The album, released in

Europe in February has reportedly sold more than 325,000 copies there already.

Cohen's album was produced by himself with Roscoe Beck in Los Angeles, Michel

Robidoux in Montreal and Jean -Michel Reusser in Paris. Included are eight new Cohen compositions, including his versions

of First We Take Manhattan and Ain't No Cure For Love, both recorded first by Jen-

nifer Warnes on her 1986 album of Cohen

songs, Famous Blue Raincoat.

First We Take Manhattan is a hit in Europe, and Ain't No Cure For Love has

been taken as the first single from the album for release in Canada and the U.S.

Cohen's European tour will continue through June, winding down with shows at

London's Royal Albert Hall. Canadian and U.S. tour dates are being projected for the fall.

what they're listening to most of the time, they just know they like it," Oslin continues.

"I don't think I fit anywhere really and I

think that's why I'm working, because I

don't fit into any mold and you either like it

or you don't. It tends to be more country. I'm not pop and I'm certainly not rock 'n' roll, crossover is something you don't plan. If you do, you're an idiot. It either happens or it

doesn't." With 80's Ladies being Oslin's debut, in

her mid -forties, the sineer is considered one of country's brightest "new" stars. Though

the album did take many years to complete, the time allowed to write that all-important

first record is one of the advantages country acts have compared with their pop counter-

parts, she says, as image contributes much less in climbing the ladder of success.

"There tends to be more writers in coun- try than pop. In pop you tend to be real

young when you make it and you don't know how to do anything at that point, except to

have the look and squeek the song out, and so

you do cover songs. There's a lot of covers out ... 'It was a hit then and the new genera- tion doesn't know it, so let's do it again,'

which is a cheap shot that works, but it's not very interesting."

Currently recording new material for a

follow-up album, expected later this year, Oslin admits that two decades ago, a country

act could have a couple of hit records and en- joy a ten year career, which is not the case

anymore. "It's not quite as fickle as pop is,

because in pop, your audience literally outgrows you in a year, and in country it's

not as if they're not as loyal, it's just that they're not as easy to please. They're not as

complacent as they once were, there's a lot of competition today and you have to give them

quality material. "It used to be

. . .

there were seven acts in country that did it all, that was it, and all

the records bought were theirs. Artists also used to put out two and three albums a year, and they cost $12,000 to make and they

sounded like it, as far as I'm concerned. But

now some of the frontrunning equipment is

available in Nashville and that never was the

case. They wised up and saw the writing on the wall ... if they're going to compete, then

they have to compete," she concludes.

Target label releases new Mavety single

Once an unknown guitarist, until he wrote Broken English for Marianne Faithful!,

Toronto native Joe Mavety has emerged from the studios with what he hopes is yet another hit single. Titled The Crusaders and released

on the Pickering -based (Ontario) Target Records, the single was produced by Michael Fonfara, who recorded and toured with Lou

Reed in the late seventies. Together, last year, they formed Joe

Mavety and The Mule (slated to open for The Bears' only Toronto date this month), before

travelling to Matrix Studios in London, England to record the song. The hand is cur-

rently touring across the country on the club and campus circuit, explains the label's

founder Edward McDonald. Maintaining an unconventional, "low

profile" approach, Target has opted out of major distribution, choosing instead the in-

dependent route. "We're basically a meat and potatoes operation," states McDonald,

"but we're willing to take chances and hopefully people will find our music

refreshing. Sure, we're trying to do it as in- dependently as posible, but we're still work-

ing within the system artistically." With a mandate to launch a new Cana-

dian record every two months, from such acts as The Deck Chairs and Foreign Exchange,

Target's McDonald is actively seeking to sign songwriters and hands in the forthcoming

months, though stresses, his company is still "in the fledgling stages" with skeletal "but

effective" distribution, he concludes.

After two year battle CFGM moves to 640 The news that came down the hill from the

CRTC that CFGM had won its bid to move to 640 on the dial was almost anti -climactic at

the Toronto country giant. Although the

staff was obviously delirious with excitement,

the hours and what must have seemed like

tons of verbiage "fluff" and countering obstacles thrown in their way by opponents

to their move, is now "water under the

bridge," Greg Slaight, General Manager of

CFGM, admits that it was a long hard fight, but "we won in the end, and that's what real-

ly counts. Now with our new position on the dial, we have a potential listening audience of

more than 4.2 million." The new transmitter will be in place

shortly and it's expected CFGM AM 640 will

go to air this September 1st. Interestingly enough, nostalgia has now

invaded country music and CFGM has the latest audience figures to prove it.

Listenership for the station's weekly Country Yearbook, hosted by Al Kingdon,

has jumped by "100 percent from last fall, according to winter ratings released by the

BBM Bureau of Measurement," says Slaight.

The one -hour show presents the Top Ten

country music hits of the past forty years, along with what is described as "a unique

perspective on the news, sports and entertain-

ment events that hold special interest for the

kids of the baby boom." Boasts Slaight, "It's as good as anything there is on the air. It's a

quality production and seems to he creating a

real audience loyalty."

The BBM winter book indicated the

CFGM audience doubled in the 6-7 pm Satur-

day slot. A similar 100 percent increase in au- dience was also registered in the show's

previous time slot at 5 pm Saturdays.

"It's not just the nostalgia craze that ac-

counts for the program's popularity," says Kingdon, "It's the nature of the music itself.

Country may rise and fall in popularity, but it's always there."

The series is written and produced by.

Quasarts Productions in association with CFGM and will shortly be offered through

syndication to stations across Canada and the

U.S.

Toronto Four on CRTC hit list since October '87In order to clear up some of the points thatwere passed over, plus the FAX glitches thatgave the wrong percentage point in lastweek's report on the CRTC's Hardballingwith Standard's Slaight, the following are thefacts, direct from the CRTC, with regard totheir calling Toronto stations, CKFM-FM,CHUM -FM, CHFI-FM and CILQ-FMbefore them for the Apr. 12 Hearing.

According to the CRTC Notice of PublicHearing 1988-24, it was in September of 1987when the Commission received a complaintfrom CHUM -FM Ltd. that CKFM-FM wasexceeding "the authorized guidelines whichrestrict the use of hits to less than 50 percentof the popular music selections broadcastduring a broadcast week". Following thiscomplaint, the Commission decided to com-pare the performances of the four Torontorock stations above. They requested the log-ger tapes from the four stations for the weekof Oct. 11, 1987 and, subsequently, the weekof January 3, 1988, asking that they indicatewhich musical selections broadcast duringthose periods would qualify as hits and asCanadian musical selections.

The Commission apparently analyzedeach station's performance on a single dayduring each weekly period and sent the resultsto each station, receiving the licensees viewswith respect to the CRTC's October results, but not those for January.

Based on one day analysis, it was ap-parently discovered that the original self-analysis of the four stations, stacked up asfollows with the CRTC's analysis in brackets:CHUM -FM 51.5 (59.1), CKFM-FM 65.4(68.7), CHFI-FM 51.8 (54.5), and CILQ-FM51.4 (43.6).

Following the receipt of the Commis-sion's results for October, CHUM -FM in-dicated that their percentage should read 53percent, while CHFI-FM did not modify itsresults and CKFM-FM accepted the Commis-sions figures. The CRTC did not request anyviews on its findings for January, which wereas follows, again with the CRTC results inbrackets: CHUM -FM 49.75 (56.4), CKFM-

With respect to Canadian content for thefour stations, the results, based on one dayanalysis for October 1986 were, with theCRTC results bracket: CHUM -FM 20.7(20.7), CKFM-FM 19.8 (19.2), CHFI-FM21.9 (18.3), and CILQ-FM 22.2 (21.5), andfor January 1988: CHUM -FM 22.3 (23.4),CKFM-FM 21.7 (19.0), CHFI-FM 24.2(23.7), and CILQ-FM 29.1 (27.7).

The Commission points out that the Pro-

I mise of Performance of CHUM -FM, CKFM-FM and CHFI-FM "indicate that at least 20percent of the musical selections broadcastwill be Canadian while CILQ-FM stipulates,30 percent in its recently renewed Promise OfPerformance.

The Commission was obviously concern-ed about the results of the above analyses,"in light of the undertakings found in the sta-tions' Promises Of Performances accepted bythe Commission in its renewal decisions forthese stations."

Accordingly, CHUM -FM and CHFI-FMwere called to the Public Hearing to "discusstheir apparent non-compliance with the re-quirement to broadcast less than 50 percenthits." The Commission called CKFM-FM tothe hearing to discuss their "apparent failureto meet the obligations set out in its PromiseOf Performance for both the proportion ofhits and Canadian musical selections broad-cast by the station," and called CILQ-FM tothe same hearing to discuss its "apparentfailure to fulfill its requirements with respectto the broadcasting of Canadian musicalselections."

It's expected the CRTC will make publicits findings on the April 12 hearing within thenext few weeks.

". Certainly, home taping is a colossal problem, not only in Europe, but

worldwide. However, at least there are copyright laws in several countries of Europe, including Germany, Austria, France and

Spain, which provide for royalty payments in respect to home -taping. These laws have been

enforced by legal action where this has been necessary (as in Austria and Germany) and copyright owners do benefit from these royalties.

Make A Wish session recorded at Inside Trak

Lisa Barton, Manager of Operations for Bur- naby's Inside Trak Studios, reports a hefty

schedule of recording activity. One of the highlights of the past month was the recor-

ding of the Some Hearts Reach High single, which was written and produced by Paul Janz. All proceeds from the sale of this single

will go to the Make A Wish Foundation. Janz also lent his vocal talents to the recording

along with Bill Henderson, Saffron Hender- son, Jim Byrnes, Nancy Nash, Paul Hyde,

Colin James, Brian Trudeau, Mike Reno, Brian Voulmer, Erroll Starr and Rita Wood- man.

As well, Janz has been in and out of the studio lately, workine on various song

material. He is currently charting on the RPM A/C chart with his single, I Won't Cry.

Colin Weinmaster has also been in the studio, doing the final mixes for Alibi's new album, No Doubts. The country band will shortly have a video and, says Barton, "It's

hot". Engineering duties on the Alibi session were handled by Dave Slaver and Gary Tole.

Tole and Slager were also on the board for Christian artist, Connie Scott's fourth

album, a medley of old and new Christmas songs.

Bill Henderson has been using the studio as well, working on several demos of his own.

It all comes downEvan AdelmanAdelman/O'Connell Enterprises

My involvement over the past eight years inthe Canadian music industry has, for themost part, been agreat source ofsatisfaction, not tomention a wonder-ful learning ex-perience. Taking amoment to reflecthas brought backsome very fondmemories and, at thesame time, remindedme of a fewnightmares I don'tever care to relive. Most importantly though,it has reconfirmed my reasons for choosing acareer in music in the first place.

Prior to 1980, I had gotten a bit of ahead start in music, while in highschool.

CBS ships foregrounderon Midnight OilWith Midnight Oil's latest album, Diesel AndDust, entering the RPM 100 Top 10 lastweek, the band would seem to have finallybroken commercial and mainstream radiobarriers across North America, as CBS' KimZayac points out, the label's "been layingtrack on the band for so long that it was final-ly time to jump in and drive the train."

This past week, a double gatefoldpackage, which enables programmers to pro-duce their own customized and informativeforeground special on Midnight Oil, wasdistributed to radio stations, similar to thosepreviously produced for Pink Floyd andBruce Cockburn, by CBS.

"Although you may do a whole raft oftelephone interviews into major markets,"continues Zayac, "you've really got to feelsorry for those guys out in the secondarymarkets that nobody ever calls and says 'Hey,how would you like to do a phone interviewwith so and so?' This is really a great way forthose radio guys to fulfill their foregroundcommitments as well."

Ever since the label broke Men At Work, they've had varying degrees of success withAustralian bands, adds Zayac, includingMental As Anything and the Oils, along withhis current "favourite", Noiseworks. However, the big summertime hit could liewith another act from "down under" calledThe Party Boys, and their album, scheduledfor release next month. The first single is a"brilliant" cover of John Congas' He's Gon-na Step On You Again.

"It's a great attitude," concludes Zayac,"It's like the essence of what rock 'n' roll isall about. It's cliched, but it's true. It's just abunch of guys having a good time, and Ithink that's where it all came from.

"But it's still a rock 'n' roll record, and alot of CHR and even AOR stations are notthat rock 'n' roll oriented anymore. There's ahybrid format out there that's part CHR,part adult -pop and part rock 'n' roll. So it'stough to figure who's going to really go afterthis. But we're going to keep knocking untilyou start rocking . . . "

to teamwork . . . !!Besides writing a regular column in MusicCanada Quarterly, I was the students' councilsocial convenor. Inteviewing and bookingacts such as Lighthouse, April Wine, EdwardBear and The Stampeders was the ultimatethrill at the time. It also gave me the oppor-tunity to learn how the business reallyoperated.

I eot further involved in the local musicscene in Toronto while I was in university. Iworked as a photographer for Rock Express(then Music Express) as a publicist for MusicShoppe International and as a promotioncoordinator for Platinum Artists. Afteruniversity, I secured a fulltime job atPlatinum Artists, where I ran the office dur-ing 1982 and '83. There, I had the chance towork with the likes of Helix, PlatinumBlonde, The Parachute Club, David Wilcox, etc.

The early eighties provided me withhands on experience. The greatest lesson I

learned throughout my internship was the im-portance of teamwork. Working alongside somany others already established in thebusiness was a real eye-opener. Watchingthem all working collectively drove the pointhome about the success that could be achiev-ed through a group effort.

As of 1984, I have been a 50 percentpartner in Adelman/O'Connell Enterprises.Along with my partner, Michael O'Connell,we are a small but efficient team. Whetherbooking the El Mocambo and The Copa ormanaging artists such as Lisa Price and PhaseIV, our mutual reliance on each other's in-dividual abilities has always allowed us to

keep on top of our business affairs. As ateam, we're able to bounce ideas off eachother, share the responsibilities and knowthat the job will always get done. As the say-ing goes, "two heads are better than one."

Most recently, I have had the pleasure ofbeing a part of yet another team. For the pastthree years I have been the manager of TheJitters. For two years the members of theband and myself worked closely together withour sights set on securing a recording deal. Attimes, certain members of the team lost hope, but the rest of us quickly built their con-fidence back up.

Sticking together as a team paid off forus, as in June '87, The Jitters were signed to aworldwide deal with Capitol Records -EMI ofCanada. Now, we're all part of an even largerteam which includes players from around theworld. It's a team that we're proud to be apart of, and we rely on all of the othermembers for different reasons everyday.Together, we're all working to make The Jit-ters a household name . . . everywhere.

The concept of teamwork may be mostfrequently used when discussing football, baseball, basketball or hockey, however, it isalso widely applicable in terms of the musicindustry. Throughout the eighties, I havealways benefited from my involvement as amember of a larger group effort. Therefore, the one aspect of this business which willalways remain a high priority for me is theimportance of working in close associationand harmony with others. No matter whatyou do, or who you work with in thisbusiness, successful endeavours are not possi-ble without the full cooperation of yourteam.

The top priority atVirgin Records is actually Ziggy Marley andalthough his record (produced by TalkingHeads' Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz) ischarting in all markets where he's touring,CFNY and CHEZ-FM are the only radio sta-tions playing the record, a situation Bartlettcontends will also change shortly as well;while adding the teenaged Jamaican reggaesensation taking over where his father leftoff.

"In talking with the American label,"Bartlett continues, "you can hear it in theirvoices when they're giving you the old 'Yeah,we'll try . . . ' and the 'We're not going tostop until we bring this kid in' and I knowthey're geared up. I mean . . . the whole pro-mo staff is out on the road with instructionsnot to come back to the office until they havethe adds."

Laura Bartlett

Hot Jammin' is, so far, the only albumto contain the Canadian hit, Hands Up bySway, and Virgin recently released the secondsingle, Stutter Rap, a musical spoof on rap ingeneral, by the U.K. group Morris Minor andThe Majors; though also included are thehits Everything I Own (Boy George) andUB40's Sing Our Own Song.

"We're chasing it (Stutter Rap) atradio," says Bartlett. "Not so much at AORor A/C, but at Top 40. AM106 in Calgaryput it on their Showdown and it beat MichaelJackson's Dirty Diana 97 to 31 and it's beenwinning for the past four nights in a row. If Ican get that kind of test from CHRs acrossthe country then I think the record will takeoff on its own.

"But it's a visual thing too, and ifMuchMusic comes in, as people start to see it,then it could be a situation where they callradio looking to hear the record, withouteven radio being on it already."

However, the Johnny Hates Jazz albumis the one fingered to climb through thecharts first, as their single Shattered Dreamsis an across-the-board hit. GLASS TIGER Pop/RockDiamond Sun Capitol C1 -48684-FOnce again Jim Valiance has lent hismagical talents to this Newmarketquartet, producing another album cer-tain to dominate our pop charts thisyear, and at the same time maintainingthe band's status internationally. Manyyears have gone by since a Canadiangroup has achieved as much as thisbrilliant band has done in such a shortperiod. The new album is lavish In itsarrangements and stylish in its content, possessing an earthy quality in itsstatement. The title track sets themood and temperament prevalentthroughout but the embellishments ofguesting musicians on subsequenttracks accommodates wonderfully itsdiverse tough dynamic range. Record-ed primarily at Le Studio.

WILLIAM ORBIT -InstrumentalStrange CargoNo Speak - IRS -42098-JAdult Contemporary stations shouldbe paying particular attention to thisrecord, as the label hopes to release asingle in the forthcoming weeks, though It stands as a superb recordingand should in no way be limited to anyone audience. In this regard, perhaps

retailers could pick up the slack. An in-tricate and intriguing album, keenlydisplaying the label's unique visionand prowess, and one that will be fond-ly recalled in years to come as an in-novation in our time.

ANDREW CASH RockTime And Place - Island - ISL-1185-JSecure though subtle in its intent, this.album is going to catch a lot of in-dustry watchers, stateside, by surprise. It's neither overblown nor earthshatter-ing, Cash simply states his case, buthas unleashed a powerful document inour time. Artistic foresight and uncom-promising eloquence combine to flat-ter the Canadian music industry, justwhen it was needed the most. As asongwriter, Cash is virtually unrivalledamong today's up and coming acts. However, the experience and tutelageof John Switzer give this appealingrecord a credence quite unique.

TONIO K Pop/RockNotes From The Lost CivilizationA&M SP -763-WCurrently touring with The Kinks, TonioK. has released a record true to form.Perhaps the best track is The Execu-tioner's Song, but it simply starts offone of the more potent sides of musicreleased this year. Here, Young's goneback with his backing band, TheBluenotes, and lashes out some greatR&B along the way, and not to men-tion, of course, going back to hisoriginal label stateside. Producedby Jimmy Johnson, this double albumgatefold package has enough guestingtalents that It can't possibly be con-sidered just another 'greatest hits' ef-'fort but, indeed, a fine tribute. She is cur-rently on release with Gently Lay MeDown, a penning by Cyril Rawson andJ.K. Gulley, a key track. Vocals are wellprojected and lyric control well defin-ed. Excellent instrumental backup bysome of the better session people fromNashville. Here's an Albertan with a unique coun- try twist ... a real storyteller, which is

why perhaps, he's been nicknamed "The Rounder". He's in that age group

(38 years old) that oozes confidence and he should attract the ear of coun- try programmers. Currently on release

The live theatre and film talent of this London, Ontario native is obviously key

for her recording debut. There's an air of confidence with her vibrant vocal

projection and clearly defined lyric in- terpretation that elevates her into the

professional arena. The choice of song material enhances this talent. She is already scoring points with her NC charted single, Just The Same. Currie

capitalizes on the songwriting talents of Lenny Solomon and Greg Kavanagh,

(both of whom produced), Maribeth Solomon and Dave Tyson and Eddie

Schwartz, the latter two writing Only The Heart, a key track.

A/C programmer nod toIt was several weeks ago when the Toronto -based Slak label released its debut, LorraineScott's Crying For Love, and they are nowencouraged to see a pattern of A/C program-mer acceptance beginning to form across

Whittaker to Torontofor McClear Place sessionRoeer Whittaker returns to Canada to beginwork on an all new self -penned album. Thesession will take place at McClear PlaceStudios. He will be reunited with arranger -producer Eric Robertson and Hayward Par -rot, the team that produced so many of Whit -takers past sessions.

Coincidentally, Whittaker's return toCanada coincides with the release of What AWonderful World in Canada by the Tembolabel. The live recording came about lastsummer when Whittaker's popular Sing OutTV series made its debut in the U.K. and wasreleased on the Sing Out Soundtrack album.

Burton Cummings set forRYH's Imperial RoomBurton Cummings makes another of hispopular return engagements to the ImperialRoom of Toronto's Royal York, May 25through June 4. As Jay Linden of Gino Em -pry Publicists puts it, "All of Burton'sengagments have sold out . . . and all havebeen different from each other, and allgarnered raves."

Cummings last played the prestigiousroom in March of 1986.

Now living in Los Angeles, Cummingshas been constantly active in lending himselfto supporting Canadian songwriters andrecording artists, whether through panels, rallies, or in time consuming discussions withgovernment agencies. He has been particular-ly vocal over the government's stalling inrevising the Copyright Act.

A GOES AROUND

COMES AROUND"

Scott's Slak debutCanada. The flip, Wishful Thinking, has alsobeen picking up play, and both sides havecaught the attention of dance club DJs inToronto and Montreal.

The Scott recording session was a labourof love, for producer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist and top honcho at Slak,AIKussin, who obviously played most of the in-struments on the session. Both Kussin andScott wrote the two sides which were record-ed at Toronto's Number Nine Sound. Theyoung label even went into the extra expenseof housing their debut in an eye-catchinggate -fold jacket, displaying their "star" onthe front.

There has been international interest inthe Scott single, both from the U.S. and U.K.It was after Norman (Otis) Richmond (Presi-dent of the Black Music Association (Toron-to Chapter) writing in the Canadian Reportof Black Radio Exclusive (BRE) about Scott:"North Star On The Rise", when Mike Wardof Timeless Records in the U.K. tracked themdown and is now negotiating for a U.K.release.

Florio to Winnipeg forVariety Club TelethonTembo recording artist Louisa Florio took abreak from recording her second LP, to takepart in the Winnipeg Variety Club Telethon.

The Telethon was tagged "a great suc-cess," with more than one million dollars be-ing raised "for the very first time."

Sharing the spotlight with Florio wereTV stars Danny Pintauro from Who's TheBoss, Kimberly Russell from Head Of TheClass, Alan Campbell from Jake and TheFatman, plus the Dallas CowboyCheerleaders and more.

Florio is back in the studio, putting thefinal touches on the album, expected to bereleased early summer.

Maxwell King and Trendpact distribution dealThe demand for the Maxwell King (in-strumental) album/cassette, Wine AndLovers, has been so great that Gino Salvador, who is Maxwell King, went shopping forwhat he called "an aggressive and nationaldistributing company." His search endedwith veteran record industry exec, Jack In-haber, who heads up Trend Records & Tapes, based in Rexdale (Toronto). Effective im-mediately, Maxwell King product, releasedon the Jaggar label, will be available throughTrend.

Salvador has been experiencing"unbelievable" Canadian and internationalacceptance of his instrumental album, whichwas recorded at Toronto's Cherry BeachStudio with Rick Wilkins doing the arranging(see RPM - Albums, Apr. 9/88).

He is currently talking with internationalcontacts in the U.S. and Europe for release ofthe album.

The Mood I'm In, the third single takenfrom the Wine And Lovers album, has beenadded "across the board" with A/C stationsin Canada and continues to move up theRPM A/C chart (No. 8 this week).

A couple of follow-ups are in the pre-production stages says Kussin, "a radiosingle . . a ballad, titled Never Be Lonely, and a dance record, Hot For You, which wewill be directing at the U.S. market first."

Kussin and Scott are also writing morematerial for an album session, and Kussin iscurrently looking for an investor.

Coming up for Scott is a couple of daysat Toronto's Horseshoe (May 20 & 21), plusGlobal News At Noon on May 20.

Jamie Warren makes bidfor AOR/CHR marketThe Jamie Warren Band bounces back intothe recording field with a bright, clean, blues -influenced rocker that should garner himmuch attention with AOR and CHR pro-grammers. The release of What Goes AroundComes Around, a Warren original, is

somewhat of a departure from thischarismatic young talent from Kitchener.

Warren is quite well known in the coun-try field where five of his singles, over a shortperiod of time, charted on the RPM 60,which led to him being nominated for andwinning the Big Country Outstanding NewArtist award in 1986.

This new single, released on the Two Hiplabel, isn't beyond the depths of country and,as Warren says, "I hope country program-mers, who I got to know over the years, willrecognize the Memphis blues influence inWhat Goes Around Comes Around, and giveit a listen."

Warren is also concentrating on analbum release over the next few months. Thenew single was produced by himself and RickHutt at Cedartree Studio. His band com-prises Bill Boyington (bass), Craig Bignell(percussion), Danny Murray (guitars), War-ren and Hutt (keyboards), with keyboardprogramming by Rick Hutt. Backgroundvocals were supplied by Mike Shotton andsax inserts by Chris Mitchell.

The Two Hip label is based in Kitchener.

A couple of follow-ups are in the pre- production stages says Kussin, "a radio

single . . . a ballad, titled Never Be Lonely,

and a dance record, Hot For You, which we will be directing at the U.S. market first."

Kussin and Scott are also writing more material for an album session, and Kussin is currently looking for an investor.

Coming up for Scott is a couple of days at Toronto's Horseshoe (May 20 & 21), plus

Global News At Noon on May 20.

Jamie Warren makes bid for AOR/CHR market

The Jamie Warren Band bounces back into the recording field with a bright, clean, blues

- influenced rocker that should garner him much attention with AOR and CHR pro-

grammers. The release of What Goes Around Comes Around, a Warren original, is

somewhat of a departure from this charismatic young talent from Kitchener. Warren is quite well known in the coun-

try field where five of his singles, over a short period of time, charted on the RPM 60, which led to him being nominated for and

winning the Big Country Outstanding New Artist award in 1986.

This new single, released on the Two Hip label, isn't beyond the depths of country and,

as Warren says, "I hope country program- mers, who I got to know over the years, will

recognize the Memphis blues influence in What Goes Around Comes Around, and give

it a listen." Warren is also concentrating on an

album release over the next few months. The new single was produced by himself and Rick Hutt at Cedartree Studio. His band com-

prises Bill Boyington (bass), Craig Bignell (percussion), Danny Murray (guitars), War-

ren and Hutt (keyboards), with keyboard programming by Rick Hutt. Background

vocals were supplied by Mike Shotton and sax inserts by Chris Mitchell.

The Two Hip label is based in Kitchener.

Quality gets behind Lucille StarrYou know the old saying, "as long as theyspell my name right . . . " What began assomewhat of a negative has turned into apretty positive happening for Lucille Starr. Her single, The First Time I've Ever Been InLove, was shipped to some, not all Canadianradio stations and to some in the specializedpress, from Cardinal's Nashville offices. Thesingle is very good, by the way, and it caughtthe ears of some of the very important coun-try programmers, and got a lot of airplay. There was some concern about who got it andwho didn't, and just a few weeks ago, QualitySpecial Products became involved, and RPMfinally received a copy of the single. Quality'sMarketing Manager Ralph Quirino is work-ing the single as if it was just released, and

he's having success, but he's afraid there's afew stations that don't have the single, so ifyou don't, give Ralph a call at 416-291-5590.Lucille is now working on her album whichwill be released as a Cardinal/Quality pro-ject. She will also be in Toronto May 9 for apromotion/business visit.

The Haggertys readying new singleJim and Dianne Haggerty will shortly releasetheir new B&C single, You Got Me Shakin'.Their 15-yr old son, Scott sings harmony onthe single with his mom. The session was pro-duced at B&C's Trenton studios by John Col-lins and Eric Baragar, the same team whowere nominated as Producers of The Year inthe 1987 Big Country Awards. That sameyear, The Haggertys were nominated as TopCountry Group. It's almost one year agowhen the Haggertys were last on release with

With regard to the Wayne Prongersingle, Circle Of Wood, "Almost a must addfor traditional country stations," says Henry,"Never mind the press release, you don'tneed an excuse to add this one."

Here's a question posed by Henry: "Iflipped the Great Western Orchestra's lastest,You Done Me Wrong . . . what's Side 1/Side2 really mean . . . ?"

Now, here's a meaty one: "It's not Can -con, but K.D. Lang's Down To My LastCigarette should do very well." This track isincluded on Lang's soon -to -be -releasedalbum, Shadowland, which was produced inNashville by Owen Bradley.

Haggerty (bass). Jim and Dianne are now playing more concert dates, a welcome relief

from some of the bars they once played. Coming up is an eneagement at Belleville's

The Oaks at CJOC Lethbridge The Oak Ridge Boys recently paid a visit to

Lethbridge, a CJOC presentation, and as the station's Music Director, Brent Estabrooks

A couple or three notes from CHSJ's Bob Henry Through the marvellous technology of FAX,

comes what CHSJ Program Director Bob Henry calls "a couple or three notes."

With regard to the Wayne Pronger single, Circle Of Wood, "Almost a must add

for traditional country stations," says Henry, "Never mind the press release, you don't

need an excuse to add this one." Here's a question posed by Henry: "I

included on Lang's soon -to -be -released album, Shadowland, which was produced in

Nashville by Owen Bradley. Henry's Pick Hit for this week: Michael

Martin Murphey with son Ryan and their single Talkin' To The Wrong Man, "gotta make Top Ten," says Henry.
