A North American first forMalcolm Perlman has scored a major coup inthe record retail business with the installation ofrevolutionary house ordering system known asBits Of Hits. Perlman's Sunrise organizationhas the North American rights and, as of Nov.19, will be the first record retail chain in NorthAmerica to have the system operational.

There are more than 1,500 titles in thesystem covering pop, country, rock and classicalmusic. In-store customers can pick an albumand sample each track (30 seconds of listeningare allocated to each track, 20 seconds into the

Malcolm Perlman with his Bits of Hits Directory.

track). A directory of titles will be publishedmonthly, and updated when necessary.

The Sunrise flagship store, located on theYonge Street strip in downtown Toronto, hasbeen equipped with 12 telephones, with two inthe Dixie Plaza store. The system has beeninitially set up for 16 lines, but can easily beexpanded to 36.

The in-store capabilities of the system is

Sunrise operationjust the beginning of what could dramaticallychange record -buying habits. The system canbe expanded, "and will be when economicallyfeasible," says Perlman, as a home -buyingservice. By merely calling a number (touch-tone telephones only), homebuyers then call upa code for their desired album, and if satisfied, supply their name and address, which leads toan immediate mail order transaction.

The system can also pay off for Sunrisewith advertising spots, primarily for recordcompanies. Advertisements can be built in every90 seconds. One of the first to recognize thepotential of this system was Warner Music ofCanada. The system also allows for an advertiserto front load its titles to run in conjunction withthe ads.

Perlman is hopeful of expanding thesystem, but for now he is content "to build thecredibility of the system ... build a new bridgefor the industry rather then destroy it."

The system is also designed to assist radiostations in promotions involving upcomingcontests and the promotion of concerts. Muchof this service can be offered to radio stations atno cost in return for on -air plugs.

Another plus factor for the system is itsstatistical gathering advantages. It is possible todetermine the age, sex and other pertinentinformation that would prove invaluable to bothrecord companies and broadcasters. As well, amailing list can be assembled merely by askingthe caller for their address, or by using aheretofore unknown service from the US thatcan obtain this information from the telephonecompany.

Adding a customer service of thismagnitude, which could conceivably beexpanded to the other 29 stores in the Ontario

Saturn's Kennedy ready to battle mail orderIt has been reported that 59 percent of Canada'spopulation has been using either catalogue ormail order buying for records and videos.Needless to say, this revelation is cause forconcern with the record retailers and rackjobbers.

Leonard Kennedy, President of SaturnDistributing, not known to indulge incomplacencies, isn't too thrilled at the prospectof the mail order business continuing to take alarge chunk out of the market.

"What is the mail order business in Canadareally doing?" How much is the volume that we,as retailers and distributors, are really losing tothe mail order business? It's got to come to ahead. It's being challenged in the US, and it hasto be addressed here in the Canadianmarketplace, because we're losing big, big, bigdollars."

Kennedy will be aggressively pursuingthis problem at the next meeting of the retailer'sassociation, and offering his own solutions, which he won't reveal at this time. "There's agroup of people out there who I have to discussthis issue with first. That's my first responsibility, and then we take it from there.

"It's really affecting our business. If 59percent of the population bought mail order orcataloguelast year... what is that telling us? It's

no different than the amount of merchandisethat is being purchased by Canadians on music, from the TV spots in the US . . . and it's beingbrought into this country, duty and tax free, andno GST, as long as it's under $40.00.

Nobody has any idea how this is affectingour business. And yet those Americans keep onadvertising on all those border stations withouthesitation. So, they must be doing somethingthere for a reason, and it's always mentioned onthe bottom of the ad, 'If you're Canadian, include an additional $3.00.' So somethingmust be going on that nobody wants to tell usabout."

It's obvious there are big dollars beingspent on advertising, not only on television butin print by the mail order houses. "I don't thinkthere is any one retailer or rack jobber out therewho can spend the money that the mail orderhouses are doing in the music business on amonthly basis on advertising. I don't think anyone of us has that kind of budget."

In conclusion, Kennedy suggests, "it'stime for us to stop fighting among ourselves andstop worrying about what the new kid on theblock is doing versus the old guy on the block. . . and work together to try to accomplishsomething for a change . . . as a group ofbusiness people who want to stay in business."

chain, has put the Sunrise organization a cutabove its competitors.

Record sales "jumping" for Wheels PresidentThe President of the Records On Wheels chain,Don Ierullo, was greatly amused to pick up aToronto newspaper and find that he had spent inthe neighbourhood of $2.6 million on a jumpinghorse for his daughter.

"Record sales have been good, but not thatgood. I wish it were true, but there's no way inthe world that I'd pay that kind of money for ahorse, not even for my daughter," Ierullo joked.

Ierullo was introduced to the sport of horsejumping through his daughter, Skye, six yearago. He has since purchased a variety of showjumping horses, his most recent acquisitionbeing the European horse Grand Slam.

In terms of the record retailing business,Ierullo was quite happy with the strong showingthe months of Sept. and Oct. produced. "Saleswere good and a lot of that had to do with all thesuperstar product that was released. I don't

Fred Penner is steppingout with "Happy Feet',Fred Penner's eighth album, Happy Feet, isstretching himself in new musical directions, ushering in what could be an entirely newdirection for children's music. The differenceis found in jazzy versions of songs from theswinging '30s and '40s, including You CanCount On Me, a classic offered to Penner by thelegendary Sammy Cahn.

"The songs of the swing era are timeless intheir appeal. The decision to make this kind ofrecording was inspired by the music of theDepression. People got up on their feet and

danced their troubles away," states Penner. "Ithought children would respond to the melodies. They love to move and sing. It's a family albumwhere all can join in the fun."

Penner visited Sony Music Canada's tapeduplicating warehouse recently where hepresented Sony Music Canada President PaulBurger with a pair of "happy feet" runningshoes. The gift was to commemorate the releaseof Penner's eighth album on the Oak StreetMusic label.

know why labels come out with their stars all atthe same time, because it cuts the market in halfwith too much competition. But what are yougoing to do? It's up to the labels, all we can dois try to sell it."

Ierullo credited the Wheels chains' successto avoiding the stiff competition in major marketsand concentrating on the less populated areas."We were sorry to close our flagship store onYonge St. But when things were booming therent went to something like $350,000, which isjust ridiculous. We're the cheapest wholesalerout there, with the best inventory."

Ierullo said for the future, the Wheelschain hopes to expand on their 50 franchisesand will continue to service over300 independentstores across Canada.

Leonard is fuming ... I Leonard Kennedy isabout to lower the boom on the mail orderpeople. If he can get his retail organizationtogether, which could be tough, hejust might beable to deliver an effective broadside againstthe enemy. Stay tuned. More changes at radio . ! I wish I didn'tlike some of these guys, which makes it hard toreport they've had to move on, some to not sogreener pastures. It's happening on both coastsand in the middle of this great land. A sign of thetimes? I hope not. But watch for a couple ofdistress sales or closures. The empire builderstend to get out of touch with the smaller markets, and they can't stand rejection . . . a bottom linebathed in red ink. (EC: Who said, bigger wasbetter . . . ?)

Anne Murray finally goes to Washington! The Berlin Wall is gone, the Jews are talking tothe Arabs, so why not another bit of good news. After five or six tries to get Anne Murray, ourCanadian star is to take part in Christmas InWashington, a special to be taped Dec. 15 byNBC. Air date will be the 18th. Johnny Mathisand Vince Gill, along with marching bands andmore will be taking part. Hosting the show willbe George and Barbara Bush, and you knowwho they are. They particularly wanted Anne totake part. In fact, I had a peek at Anne's personalmail, a letter of thank you from the AmericanPresident. Here's what it said, "Dear Anne:Barbara and I will long remember our eveningat the Country Music Awards. We left Nashvillefeeling uplifted and grateful we were included. You did a terrific job. You sure brought "ALittle Good News" our way. Barbarajoins me insending best wishes." The note was signedGeorge Bush with a P.S. "We loved it!" (EC:Cute Eh? I wonder if the folks at Sussex Driveknow of Anne . . ?)

Now, what DOES EC: mean . . . ? Thecontroversy goes on. Does EC: mean EditorialComment??? (EC: Well, of course NOT!!!) ordoes it mean Elvira Capreese??? (EC: Why elsewould my name beat the top of the column? I' vebeen here for more than a quarter of a century, ingrate!!!) So, we have solved the mystery. It'sElvira, who looks after the gossipy stuff. My jobis the factual stuff!

Biding his time ... ! If I were making 28 centson every dollar of profit, I'd be content to watchthe grass grow and the paint dry ... and keep outof the way of the old man. (EC: Can you imaginefibbing to the boss (old man) because you, wanted to go to the opening ball game . . . ? Is

that 28 cent figure right?)

I don't believe that ... there was a meetingheld regarding the VOTING ... not in the Junos, but in the Toronto election? What's this got todo with the Junos?? (EC: Behind closed doors?)Come to think of it, I DO believe it!!!

Get out of town . . . Funny how out ofprovince people make all the mistakes whenthey try to do business in Ontario. This is aunique business society (EC: Environment!!!)Get my message??? It's distinctly different.

Watch for the Watchmen ... !The Agency'sRalph James and FLIP's Debbie Rix arrangedfor the perfect setting for the showcase of TheWatchmen, the Ultrasound Show Bar, indowntown Toronto. They obviously got to theright people. I've never seen so many A&Rpeople, and a couple, I even recognized as

"having ears". The Watchmen is definitely oneband that will make news this coming year. They are not just another Winnipeg band, theyare distinctively unique, a welcome relief fromthe usual run-of-the-mill copiers. They are beingbilled as "the new young lions," not bad, and theUpper Canada brew isn't bad either. (EC: Howcould you tell with only two beers . . ?)

Hey! It's CASBY time again ... ! Yes, it'sthat time of year for the CASBY Awards, formerly the U -Knows, originally launched byDave Marsden as a spoof on the Juno Awards. And, like the Juno Awards, the CCMA Awardsand the Toronto Music Awards, they've tied inwith a brewery, Carlsberg, to be exact. What thehell would the record industry and thebroadcasters do without the breweries? (EC:That's a hot potato . !)

Hey Juno people . . . ! in case you werethinking of another category. How about for theBest Entertainment Writer? We like getting lotsof coverage in the dailies, but no one seems torecognize what these people really do for theindustry. One of the top contenders, in my view, would be Peter Howell of the Toronto Star.Unlike some of the entertainment writers, hedoesn't appear to have an axe to grind. What hewrites is candid and to the point . . . and he'sscored a couple of real, in-depth scorcherslately. (EC: I'm still waiting for that exposefrom Diane Francis on Toronto's Skydome!)

Mark my words ... ! January and February arevery funny months in the record industry. Markmy words, there will be an over -reaction to a bigdip and a lot of bloodletting at the beginning ofthe new year. Right now a number of companiesare downsizing and some are growing, but thebottom line dictates, and one record companybiggie used the word "burnout" very recently: Ididn't know he was that attuned. (EC: How towin friends and make a hit in a branch officementality!!!)

Hot stuff ... ! After that barrel of hot Jalapeno, seasoned yet, Texas style potato chips thatDave Deeley brought in, I'm not so sure wewant any more goodies. Backstage Pass - more than just merchandiseWhat is the least desired item from the usuallyvery popular Backstage Pass merchandiseclothing line? "Well, I use our Milli VanilliT-shirts to wash my car now," laughs JoelRabinowitz, the man, who along with BrentKopperson, created and executed the concept ofBackstage Pass.

It was in 1987 that the duo quit their$100,000 -a -year -plus jobs, mortgaged theirhomes and pursued their dream. The pair beingzealous music fans outside of business hours, saw a large market for high quality, fashionablerock merchandise that wasn't being tappedexcept at traditional concert sales. Thus,Backstage Pass was born and in just a few shortyears has seen its revenue grow to over $20million a year.

Much of the company's success can beattributed to their impressive list of rock stars. As exclusive Canadian licensee for the SanFrancisco based Winterland Productions Inc.,Backstage Pass represents over 250 artists fromAlannah Myles, Bruce Springsteen, Hammer,Madonna and Paula Abdul.

A strong retail strategy has been anotherfactorin their success. The company has activelypursued contracts with several major nationalretailers and recently came up with the conceptof incorporating a rock boutique within adepartment store.

"Before we came along," says Kopperson,"rock fans could only buy souvenirs at concertsor other special events. We were the first tomove rock merchandising from concert venuesto retail stores."

A few months ago the duo solidified a dealwith The Bay, Canada's largest retailer. Theyhave since opened eight Backstage Passboutiques in Bay stores across the country,

Each boutique, emblazoned with theBackstage Pass logo, resembles a stylizedproscenium stage. The concert ambience isfurther enhanced by spotlighting, video monitorsand life size standup cut-outs and posters. Theboutiques can be found in The Bay's youngmen's clothing department.

MIKA : 111 1-11111by Tim Evans

Jackson gets top add. Not surprisingly,Michael Jackson's Black Or White is the topnew entry this week at No. 58. Jackson will beattempting to do something that he didn't do onthe Bad album, that is to have a No. 1 song inCanada. Despite six songs from Bad reachingthe Top 10, none made it to the top. I Just Can'tStop Loving You came closest, peaking at No.2. On Thriller, three songs hit No. 1.

We get letters ... Naughty By Nature's O.P.P.debuts at No. 97. Not many songs have achievedmajor success using only letters in the title. Asa matter of fact, only two songs have hit No. 1without using a word in the title. What are they?

A Mysterious start! U2's Mysterious Waysspent the week going up and down the chart. Many stations reported it and then deleted it.K-97 in Edmonton was one of those stations.Carol Ann Murray reported the song added at9:45. At 10:18, it was deleted. It would havedebuted much higher, but enters at No. 100.Most stations, for one reason or another, willlikely re -add the song and it should have a bigjump next week.

The race is on. Two Rooms, the tribute toElton John and Bernie Taupin climbs 18 spotson the Albums chart to No. 23. There are manysongs from the album receiving airplay and it isconceivable there could be a few songs on theHit Tracks chart at the same time. Oleta Adams'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me almostmade it this week. One that did make it to thechart is The Who's version of Saturday Night'sAll Right For Fighting. It enters at No. 77. EltonJohn's version of that song peaked at No. 12, in1973, and was the only song in a run of 15straight that didn't make it to the Top 10.

Nearing the Top 20. Several albums are closeto making it into the Top 20. Red Hot ChiliPeppers, Nirvana, Hammer and Erasure are onthe doorstep. The common factor in these albumsis that none have a song in the Top 40. Erasure'sChorus is at No. 21 with strong retail support.Rob Herholz from the HMV store at Square OneMall in Mississauga reports Erasure as theirsecond-best seller. Rob also adds his motto .

"Go Nuts".

The big movers . . . There were quite a fewsongs with impressive jumps on the Hit Trackschart. Rush leads the way with Roll The Bonesclimbing 36 spots to No. 41. Right behind isWest End Girls' Say You'll Be Mine jumping 33places. Songs from Lisa Stansfield, Dan Hill,Southside Johnny and INXS all have moves ofmore than 20 spots.

The two and only! There have been only twosongs to reach No. 1 without having a word inthe title. Remember the Village People? Theytook YMCA all the way to the top in 1979 andMFSB sent TSOP all the way to No. 1 in 1974.

Pub ADELYNE/I by Walt Grealis

Adelyne Freifeld, one of the unsung heroes ofthe record industry, is quietly celebrating 50years of unparalleled dedication and devotionas an employee of the giant Sam The RecordMan organization.

Adelyne, first cousin to Sid and Sam, hadspent three years at Toronto's Central TechnicalSchool and had taken a night course at Shaw'sBusiness School, "because I was told I was bestsuited for an office job," Adelyne recalls. "ButI wasn't. I just hated the idea of a 9 to 5 officejob."

The 18 -year old had taken apart time jobselling Christmas lights. "It was just somethingto do. I knew it wouldn't last. I rememberit wasin November of 1941 when my aunt, who wasSid and Sam's mother, asked to see me and shemade me an offer I couldn't refuse. She wantedme to work at their store. I loved meeting people... I'm very outgoing and, besides I loved music

and I played piano, so the offer to work with Sidand Sam was right down m y alley, so I accepted."

Sniderman's Music Hall was located onCollege Street just a couple doors east of Shaw,in the west, central part of Toronto. Adelyne'srecollections stirred this reporter's memories. As a young schoolboy, I frequently visited myAunt Emma, who had an apartment over thestore. I was always fascinated by all the used carradios that cluttered up the place. The mainfloor of the store, for some unknown reason, hadshifted, resulting in a noticeable slant from thefront door to the rear the store. I used todelight in sending my marbles on a trip throughthe store until Sid asked my aunt to keep me outof the store.

Records, of course, weren't a big itemback in the forties. "They had a small area forrecords," Adelyne remembers. "It was mostly asideline. They were the old 78s. The big thing,of course, was car radios."

The shop gradually swung more and moreto records, a much easier product to handle thanthe selling and installing of car radios. After thewar there was an even greater interest in recordsand, with the retail marketing expertise theSnidermans had developed, Snidermans MusicHall became one of the more popular recordstores in Toronto.

These were fun times for Adelyne. Shecultured many, still very valued, friendships inthe business. "Oh God! It's hard to rememberthem all, but I remember Joe Pariselli fromSparton Records. They distributed Motown

You know, there's something about the recordbusiness that attracts real nice people. I don'tthink, in all the years I've been in the business, that I've met anyone I haven't liked. They're allsuch sweet guys, like Garry Newman, and hisdad, Ron, before him, Stan Klees, MauriceZurba, Donnie Howell, Harry Shaw, Joe Fox,

Hector MacNeil, Barry Stafford, Don Carter,Art Papone, Joe Toes, Shelley Rosenberg, BillyKearns, Al Fletcher and Randy Lennox, and onand on. There were so many."

In 50 years what changes has Adelyneseen? "Oh my God! Well, I started with the 78s,then the 45s and then the hi-fi and then stereo. Then we had the 8 -track tapes that didn't go andthe 4 -track tapes and cassettes. From therewe've gone into CDs. There are no more 78s.The LPs are all gone. There are no recordsanymore . .. so, yes, I've seen a few changes.I've seen records come and records go. It'sstrictly CDs, cassettes and videos, of course. Now, we're into Nintendo."

In spite of all the changes and all the years,Adelyne is still in love with the business. "It'sexciting. I enjoy what I'm doing. I enjoy thefringe benefits, seeing all the shows and meetingthe stars, the new ones and some of the olderones again. I still love meeting people."

BELINDA CARLISLELive Your Life Be FreeMCA - MCAD-10446-J

If one likes that kind of inoffensive, lightpop music that's heard on dance floors, then Belinda Carlisle's latest release isa perfect buy. Do You Feel Like I Feel?was chosen as the album's first singleand rightly so, as it's the track that reallystands out amongst all the pop bland-ness. Carlisle never varies the range ofher pretty voice and barely changes thetempo of the songs, so too many windup sounding the same. Still, the albumIs almost worth having for that dynamite

single. (CD reviewed) - DP

the Silver tracks, everything else wastaken from his previous releases, Ice,Avenue B and City of Dreams. Now thathe has a tie-in with a major mover andshaker in the independent jazz field, who, by the way, have just signed anagreement with Mesa/Blue Moon in theUS, King should garner the recognitionhe deserves. Much of the material waswritten by King. Key here are Jennifer'sDream, Angelina and Dark Eyes, withan incredible flute insert. Also key, ofcourse, Is Silver's outstandingInterpretation of Stanley Turrentine'sSugar, as well as the Billie Holliday andArthur Herzog penning of God BlessThe Child and Loverman, written byJimmy Davis, R. Ramirez and J.Sherman. Don't overlook King's penningof Summerheat featuring the AtlantaString Section with Bill McPherson ontenor sax. (CD reviewed) WG

SAMMY KERSHAW - CountryDon't Go Near The WaterMercury 510 161-2-0

Another of. the young, new breed ofcountry, who has a handle on both thecontemporary and traditional. This isone of those meaty releases, lots ofhard vocals and meaningful lyrics. Hesounds like a veteran, but with a lot offreshness that has already caught theears of country programmers. CadillacStyle, taken as the first single, is makinggood chart gains. Also key are RealOld -Fashioned Broken Heart, Kickin' Inand Yard Sale, butdon't overlook Harborfor A Lonely Heart. (CD reviewed) - WG

LORRAINE SCOTTAll TalkCold Front - 10092

All Talk is a fairly, lively debut album ofdancing tunes from Canada's LorraineScott. If That Was A Dream kicks off thediscwith lots of booming energy and thedance tunes keep right on coming, cour-tesy of Scott's pleasing vocals and thecrisp, clear production of keyboardistlco -writer, Al Kussin. In Love and HoldOn Tight are the two ballads on thealbum, but the rest of the tracks are fordancing feet. (CD reviewed) - DP

KERRI ANDERSON - PopLabyrinthimpact Records

Edmonton's Kerri Anderson makes an

Impressive debut. Her music is hard topigeon hole, combining elements of folk, pop and rock. Tracks like Ghost, I WillDisappear and Angel Says can only bedescribed as ethereal while Day ByDay really rocks out. An interestingmix. (CD reviewed) - DP

RICHARD MARXRush StreetCapitol - C2 95874-F

Undoubtly Richard Marx, yet a verydefinate lean towards a more maturerock artist as opposed to a "popsensation." The first single KeepComing Back, which is currentlyNo. 13 after only 3 weeks on the RPM100 Hit Tracks, has the same hypnoticbeat and radio appeal as his previoustwo notable ballads Right HereWaiting and Hold On To The Nights.Capitol should be happy with this Marxrelease, with the lead-off single a

scorching ballad, and the rest of thealbum containing some high qualityrock with the right recipe for positiveradio and retail reaction.. Key tracksinclude: Keep Coming Back, PlayingWith Fire and Chains Around MyHeart. (CD reviewed) - SL

NIRVANANever MindGeffen - DGCD-24425-J

Kurt Kobain, guitarist/songwriter forNirvana, says "attitude is one thing buta good song Is the most important thing,it's the only way to really touchsomeone." Which pretty much sums upwhat's offered on Never Mind. Hardrock, verging on punk, with somemelodic pop hooks thrown inIntermittently. Considering how wellmetal and hard rock is doing, NeverMind should rack up some impressivenumbers. (CD reviewed) - DP
