MORE THAN 100 volunteers from around the Tweed will mark the fi rst anniversary this week of their involvement in a program which has changed the lives of girls in some of the poorest regions on the planet.

Days for Girls is a program which makes and distributes feminine hygiene kits, allowing girls who would otherwise be forced to spend days each month in isolation the opportunity to continue their education uninterrupted and go on to make positive contributions to their community.

The local chapter of the program, coordinated by Vicki Jenkins, has made more than 600 of the kits from fabric and other supplies donated by the Tweed community.

Some of the kits have gone to Nepal as part of the earthquake relief program while others will be going to Kenya in the next few weeks and to Cambodia in November, said Ms Jenkins.

We know from maintaining contact with some of the girls who have received the kits that they have already made a huge difference in terms of their dignity and their access to education.

The contribution of the Tweed community has been incredible, especially over the last few months as more volunteers have got involved.

One of our recent volunteers Elsa Apostoloff for example has made 200 shields and 100 bags in just one month on her own.

The local contribution has been added to the efforts of 75 other groups around the world who together have produced and distributed more than 200,000 of the kits.

Members of the Tweed based Kenya Health Program, which provides basic health education to rural areas in that country will take 200 of the kits along on their next visit in August.

Nurse Ann Prendergast from Kenya Health said there is a huge need for the kits in the areas they visit.

We go into areas of signifi cant disadvantage where people just have no way of seeking medical help, said Ms Prendergast.

Girls in these areas are forced to miss out on school each month and end up falling behind so that they have to leave early, but these girls getting a full education would make such a huge difference to their communities.

In the three weeks we are in the country we will see more than 3000 people at our clinics which gives you some idea of the level of need.

Ms Prendergast and Ms Jenkins have a connection through the Mt Warning Rotary Club which have been strong supporters of the program over the past year.

I came across it at a Rotary convention and thought it would be a great program for our club due to the fact our membership is 80 per cent women, said Ms Jenkins.

In just one year we have met all of our short, medium and long term goals so we are in the fortunate position of having to set new ones.

One of our next initiatives will be to mentor the sewing circles in Kokoda which have been set up with the assistance of machines donated by the Tweed community and help them to start producing kits.

There is still a huge need for donations of 100 per cent cotton and 100 per cent fl annelette material which we can use to create the kits, as well as funds to buy new undies and soap to include in them.

We also need volunteers to help with all aspects of the program, from sewing to collecting and distributing the kits.

Collection bins for donated fabric can be found at the Tweed Valley Weekly offi ce as well as at the Bonbon Salon, Fantazia Fabric Land in Tweed Heads and the Tweed Superclinic.

When a car park is not a roadA

teacher was pushing a fully laden shopping trolley with her toddler daughter sitting inside the trolley and

her three year old son holding her hand as they moved towards her car in the car park. It was another day of hassles for a working mum, and it was about to get worse.

Suddenly the front wheel of the trolley caught in a pothole. The trolley tipped over and the mother desperately reached to save her child in the trolley from being crushed by the tumbling trolley. In making her instinctive lunge to protect her child the mother of three fell and the heavy trolley landed on top of her.

The teacher was injured and left with ongoing pain in her neck, shoulder, back, left hip, leg and knee. The fall left her unable to work and her frustration and constant pain led to strained relations with her family and husband.

She sued the council that owned the car park. Her lawyer argued the council should have repaired the pothole that caused the accident.

The council argued it didnt know about the pothole. Besides, the council argued, the car park was a vehicle thoroughfare and therefore was a public road. That meant the council was protected by section 45 of the Civil Liability Act 2002 that exempts a roads authority from liability if it didnt know about the pothole. The trial judge agreed, and dismissed the injured mothers claim.

The injured mother took the case to the Court of Appeal. The appeal judges ruled the car park was not a public road as the council never formally classifi ed it as a road. The appeal court said the trial judge had wrongly relied on council evidence that some drivers used the car park to get from one road to another. That didnt make it a road as classifi ed by the Roads Act 1993, the Appeal Court found, and ruled in favour of the injured mother.

The injured mother was awarded $285,000, and the Court ordered the council to pay the mothers legal costs for the trial and the appeal.

Cases like this show the need to have experienced lawyers specialising in compensation law to fi ght in court for you, said Justin Stack of Stacks Law Firm.

This case hinged on the legal defi nition of what is a road and how it differs from a car park where some cars drive through to get somewhere else. It may seem a quirky legal point, but specialist compensation lawyers have the experience to win these legal arguments.

A MURWILLUMBAH based gardening enthusiast and artist will hold a special sale of her works with all proceeds going towards the setup of a botanical garden in one of Asias poorest countries.

Julia Hancock will hold the sale of her artworks, all of which are botanically inspired, on Saturday 8 August from a gallery she has set up in the garage of her home to raise funds for the Pha tad ke Botanical Gardens in Luang Prabang, Laos, scheduled to open in 2017.

I visited Laos early last year and happened to see a poster advertising the establishment of the gardens on my last day in the country, said Ms Hancock.

Laos is a country which was badly damaged during the Vietnam War

and people are still dying there every day through contact with unexploded bombs which also hold the country back from establishing an agriculture industry.

Unlike other countries in the region they are completely landlocked so they have had diffi culty establishing a tourism industry but a project like this one will help them establish eco-tourism which will make a very valuable contribution to their economy.

Approximately 60 works will be on show, ranging from small pencil sketches to large works in oil, pastel and watercolour with prices ranging from a few dollars up to $250.

Ms Hancock, a former horticulturist, said botanical painting has always held an appeal but it was only when she retired that she had time to

pursue it and it has now become one of her passions.

She will return to Laos later this year to continue her studies of the Lao language and to paint some of the local species that will be planted in the gardens.

It is a country with an amazing ecosystem which supports a wide variety of plants including beautiful orchids and fl owering trees, said Ms Hancock.

This will be a world class facility in a country which really needs it.

Ms Hancocks neighbours in what was once dubbed Sustainability Street have come on board for the cause and will be holding a number of garage sales on the same day as her exhibition to raise funds for the project.

The exhibition will run from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 8 August at 183 Murwillumbah Street.

Clubs play a central role in todays society, acting as the modern day village green for people to meet, socialise and celebrate. The Chaplaincy program is a partnership initiative between the Salvation Army and ClubsNSW. The program is the result RIDQ$XVWUDOLDQUVW WULDOwhich saw a uniformed Salvation Army Chaplain being located at the Ming-ara Recreation Club on the Central Coast for 12 months.During the trial, Chap-lain David Slee provided support, advice and en-couragement to almost 400 people about issues such as stress, anxiety, physical and mental health prob-lems, bereavement and divorce. He also attended funerals and visited club members in hospitals.A survey showed that more than 70 percent of the club community had interacted with the club chaplain, and that the response from both members and staff was overwhelmingly positive.Salvation Army Major Robin Pullen said she was happy with the positive impact of the trial and glad that the two organisations were working together to expand the program.The mission of The Sal-vation Army is to meet human need wherever it occurs and to do this without discrimination, she said. People from all sections of the community gather at clubs, and by being there to build direct relations with each club community, we can offer support and guidance to club members and staff in times of personal crisis.

Husband and wife team Owen and Pam Pattison have been appointed as Chaplains at Twin Towns Clubs and Resorts com-mencing in September.

Serving as an ear to the growing and diverse community, Owen and Pam are available to share in the lives of members by simply having a chat or by supporting patrons and their families in crisis situations and offering practical assistance to those in need.

During Owen and Pams ministry together they were appointed to a num-ber of Corps that required as much physical energy in renovations as meeting WKHVSLULWXDODQGQDQFLDOneeds of the Corps and the wider Army.

The last Corps before retirement needed so much work on the grounds and buildings that after two years I requested a QDOPRYHEHIRUHHQWHULQJretirement. That was not granted so I had no option but to ask for an early release, said Owen.

Some call it burn out, others call it depression. Whatever the term maybe I knew in my heart that , FRXOG QRW GR WKDW QDOyear where we were, so we applied for an early retire-ment. That saddened me somewhat for my calling meant and means every-thing to me and not to be DEOH WR GR WKDW QDO \HDUwas disappointing.

It took just on 12 months for Owen to really feel he was ready to continue OOLQJ LQ ZKHUH WKHArmy needed them to be.

From Corps such as Dulwich Hill to Taree. Rockhampton WR 7HQWHUHOG 7UDUDOJRQin Victoria to the Gold Coast and Bundaberg to Roma. Of this time, Owen remarked that It has been WUHPHQGRXVO\ IXOOOLQJEven from my early years as a soldier I have endeav-oured to be a yes person for the Lord so when those phone calls come we do prayerfully consider the request.

After spending two years at Taree they bought a caravan with the thought of going on a holiday up through the centre of Australia and wherever from there. Their second stop on the way was Tathra where they witnessed on television the devastating UHVLQ9LFWRULD

After making a few phone calls they pulled up a few of days later at the Traralgon Corps offering to spend two weeks there before moving on. Straight away Pam was offered the phone and really became the centre of activity. Calls came in from far and wide. From places in South Australia, NSW and Queensland. Apart from businesses in Victoria.

Owen, along with many others, worked outside amongst 20 forty-foot containers helping meet the needs of a devastated community. On the week-ends they would load their vehicle up with water, toiletry and cosmetic bags, chocolates and other food items and visit the folk in their homes all of whom experienced the horror of it all. It was indeed a great ministry, Owen and Pam said.

However, there was such a call on the team in Victoria that they

extended their plans from two weeks to four months before heading back home.

Less than 18 months later they received a phone call from the Divisional Com-mander with the request WR OO LQ DV &RUSV2FHUVat Traralgon. We were delighted to go as it gave us an opportunity to revisit many of those we came to know.

As Owen and Pam were QLVKLQJ RII WKHLU WLPH DWthe Traralgon Corps, they received a request to go on to Emerald to help with the aftermath of the damaging RRGWKDWRFFXUUHGLQODWHDecember 2010.

Two weeks later they set about a massive door-knock, assessing needs, endeavouring to comfort DQG RIIHULQJ QDQFH WR assist them with their recovery, which they worked at tirelessly for a month.

Another calling occurred when Owen and Pam were on the last days of a New Zealand cruise when a message was passed onto them from their

Commissioner asking whether they would be available to go to Bund-aberg to assist after the community had expe-rienced what they would FDOOD\HDURRG

Never have we worked with such a committed team that had the com-munity at heart said Owen. Long after the initial shock, devastation and trauma, the team from the Tom Quinn Community Centre con-tinued relentlessly to help where they could, to ease the concerns and meet the needs of their hurting community. This covered a four month period. Most of it spent living in their caravan with their little pup.

After Cyclone Larry went through North Queensland, Owen and Pam visited the farms surrounding the Atherton Tablelands. That too was such an enriching time where we were able to minister and encourage those in need. Words do not allow me to tell of the many opportunities we have had to share our faith

and to pray with those who needed a miracle in their lives and many a time that happened.

Pam and Own are looking forward to becoming full time chaplains of Twins Towns Clubs and Resort. This we truly believe is the Lords doing they said quoting their time with verse 3 from song 514 Not our own; our time, our talents, Freely all to Christ we bring, To be used in joyful service for the glory on our King.

Owen and Pam are clearly people of faith but we remind you that the service is open to everyone.
