Artist charm ... some have it! On manyoccasions I've had the pleasure of meetingseveral big stars like Whitney Houston andCarly Simon, and just recently Samantha Foxand Cy Curnin and Adam Woods of TheFixx. What charming people they are, and onsecond and third meeting, they rememberlittle things about our previous meeting.British, American and Australian artists, those I've met, are very warm, knowledgeable people and fun to meet. Onthe other hand . . . I've had some dreadfulexperiences with snot -nosed Canadian artists, most who have gone on to play the sleaze bars

and eventual oblivion they so richly deserve.Their first kick at the can was arranged bytheir record label, although they'll argue thattheir talent was the only factor. Once they hitthe big time and continue with theirarrogance, they suddenly find themselves inthe "one trick pony" situation and their labelcan't bail them out . . . they've burned toomany bridges. Someone should start a charmschool for Canadian artists. (EC: Is that whywe only have one star in our star system?)

Talking about a star system ... ! Recordretailers would seem to have a bit of an edgeon the rest of the music industry when itcomes to image. One of the shaker's in thisbusiness who keeps the tarnish off hisparticular star, is Peter Parish of A&ARecords & Tapes, who continually feeds"good stuff" to the media. By the way, thatwas a very well done piece on A&A Records& Tapes the store "Alice & Albert started,"which appeared on the front page of theToronto Star's Business Today (April 17,1989). Writer Pat Brennan should be movedinto the Entertainment Section, immediately. One small correction however. The Bronfmans aren't involved . . it's theThomson Family . . . the publishing people!(EC: I told you we should have got into theretail business . . . years ago!)

Take another bow ... Marcel! A bunch ofthe guys and gals from Musicaction andFACTOR are getting together down at TheBottom Line in Toronto on May 4th to handout kudos to themselves, and richly deserved. They'll also be honouring the 1989 Juno andFelix Award winners. Marcel Masse, of Oscarfame, (EC: Speaking of one trick ponies!)will be the "special guest". When asked ifour government star would be accepting ALLthe awards, there was a silence, which Iinterpreted to mean "no comment". Ob-viously, they wouldn't know until the lastminute if he would accept. (EC: If there'stelevision coverage, he will!)

Let's not be too quick to forget! Thisindustry has a habit of squeezing the best outvery dedicated workers and forgetting themwhen it comes time for the bows. Case inpoint, Daisy Falle, one very dedicated andconscientious, not to mention tireless workerfor CARAS. She's the glue holding thatorganization together, and she deserves alittle recognition! EC: Right on . . . !)

Charlie's at it again . . . ! Does anyonepromote Variety anymore than Charlie

Camilleri? I don't think so. He just told meabout a rush press conference that was (bythe time you get this) held in the Variety Clubclubrooms. They were going to announcethat superswimmer Vicki Keith was going tooutdo herself . .. again for Variety. And, justin passing, Charlie suggested, "Wouldn't itbe nice if someone wrote a song about Vicki, our Lady Of The Lakes?" What a great ideaCharlie, and I can just see those songwritersworking feverishly to come up with the firstentry. (EC: Just in time for summer, I hope!)

Disco sucks ... again!! It wasn't too longago that you read in these very pages, and inthis very column, that disco was coming backstrong . . . and wasn't I right? (EC: I hopenot!) Yes, folks, the music that everyonehated has returned and although the very

It was her'23rd birthday, and the BMG people designeda cake that was a work of art, built around awired turntable. They also gave her a veryexpensive leather jacket, which covered hereverything. COVER STORY- by Graeme Boyce

New Nimbus recordings display lFlamenco music has certainly had its ups anddowns throughout its colourful and lengthyhistory. A musical genre that is rather eclecticin nature, flamenco relies on interpretationand spontaneity among its players. Perhapsthen, as pop music has evolved into a veryrigid and formatted style over the years, flamenco has flourished because of itsfluidity and distinctive flavour. In Spain,Paco Pena is revered for his flamenco guitarplaying.

Although flamenco is considered a veryserious art form by the "aficionados", it re-mains stereotyped across North America, primarily due to the many Western moviesthat portrayed a popularity only amonghispanic cultures. A music steeped intradition and discipline, flamenco owes muchto Pena, who has constantly demonstrated

A&A takes over Kelly'sretail outlets in HalifaxA&A Records & Tapes, who proudly billthemselves as "the largest retail music chainin Canada", adds a couple of notches to itsbelt with the acquisition of two Kelly's Stereoretail outlets in Nova Scotia.

With the purchase of the 8,000 squarefoot store on Barrington Street in Halifaxand the New Minas outlet A&A's retailoutlets now total 240 across Canada.

As Peter Parish, Senior Vice President,Marketing & Sales for A&A, points out,"The timing was perfect for both parties:John Arnold, President of Kelly's StereoMart (Atlantic) Ltd., was seriously pursuingother interests and A&A Records & Tapes haswanted to open a full -line, flagshipSuperStore in Halifax."

International publishingdeal for HansonApparently the sleeping giants of the musicindustry, the publishers, are making hugestrides in Canada to get Canadian writers andartists the recognition and acclaim that for solong has been largely overlooked. Accordingto Geoff Kulawick, a professional managerwith Warner/Chappell, they are in"acquisition mode" and seriously looking tobeef up their talent roster.

Most recently, Warner/Chappell signedformer Glass Tiger drummer MichaelHanson to a worldwide co -publishing dealand has been recording his new material inToronto, with finished and fully mixed tracksexpected in May, Kulawick informs. Hansonjoins an impressive roster that includes DavidRoberts, Stan Meissner, Colin Linden, MylesHunter and John Whynot.

Hanson, while with Glass Tiger,co -wrote such hits as I'm Still Searching and IWill Be There. He will also perform his ownmaterial, something the publisher discoveredupon signing the artist. "I now feel that I'vecome to a point where I need to have my ownidentity as an artist," Hanson explains, "andas an individual. Writing and performing myown material is now the driving force in mylife."

    COVER STORY -

    by Graeme Boyce

New Nimbus recordings display Pena's mastery Flamenco music has certainly had its ups and

downs throughout its colourful and lengthy history. A musical genre that is rather eclectic

in nature, flamenco relies on interpretation and spontaneity among its players. Perhaps

then, as pop music has evolved into a very rigid and formatted style over the years,

flamenco has flourished because of its fluidity and distinctive flavour. In Spain,

Paco Pena is revered for his flamenco guitar playing.

Although flamenco is considered a very serious art form by the "aficionados", it re- mains stereotyped across North America,

primarily due to the many Western movies that portrayed a popularity only among

hispanic cultures. A music steeped in tradition and discipline, flamenco owes much

to Pena, who has constantly demonstrated

A&A takes over Kelly's retail outlets in Halifax

A&A Records & Tapes, who proudly bill themselves as "the largest retail music chain

in Canada", adds a couple of notches to its belt with the acquisition of two Kelly's Stereo

retail outlets in Nova Scotia. With the purchase of the 8,000 square

foot store on Barrington Street in Halifax and the New Minas outlet A&A's retail

outlets now total 240 across Canada. As Peter Parish, Senior Vice President,

Marketing & Sales for A&A, points out, "The timing was perfect for both parties: John Arnold, President of Kelly's Stereo Mart (Atlantic) Ltd., was seriously pursuing other interests and A&A Records & Tapes has

wanted to open a full -line, flagship SuperStore in Halifax."

    International publishing deal for Hanson

Apparently the sleeping giants of the music industry, the publishers, are making huge

strides in Canada to get Canadian writers and artists the recognition and acclaim that for so

long has been largely overlooked. According to Geoff Kulawick, a professional manager

with Warner/Chappell, they are in "acquisition mode" and seriously looking to

beef up their talent roster. Most recently, Warner/Chappell signed

former Glass Tiger drummer Michael Hanson to a worldwide co -publishing deal

and has been recording his new material in Toronto, with finished and fully mixed tracks expected in May, Kulawick informs. Hanson

joins an impressive roster that includes David Roberts, Stan Meissner, Colin Linden, Myles Hunter and John Whynot.

Hanson, while with Glass Tiger, co -wrote such hits as I'm Still Searching and I

Will Be There. He will also perform his own material, something the publisher discovered

upon signing the artist. "I now feel that I've come to a point where I need to have my own

identity as an artist," Hanson explains, "and as an individual. Writing and performing my

own material is now the driving force in my life."

not only its cultural significance but also its commercial viability. Recently, the Gipsy

Kings walked through a door that was kept open because of Pena's vision and dedication

to flamenco. Like heavy metal artists borrowing from

the blues, the Gipsy Kings successfully married Spanish flamenco with the pop of the

day, updating yet diluting the form. When discussing the Gipsy Kings and their

progressive, particular style, Pena treads carefully, attributing their phenomenal sales

to strong financial backing and an intelligent management team. Of the music,

specifically, he says, the vocals maintain the flamenco thread.

"The fellow who sings is obviously singing flamenco, as best he can," Pena

explains, "certainly a particular type of flamenco. I don't think that type of music

can be called flamenco though. I think it is an area of flamenco and, indeed, a limited area.

There are complex rhythms, structures and expressions within flamenco and those

people, with all my great respect, only dwell on one aspect of it, which is the lightest

form." Apparently, the inception of true

sponsors, who have contributed more than $100,000 for this year's event.

Six GM scholarships of $3,500.00 each will be awarded by MusicFest adjudicators in the Canadian Stage Band Festival, Canadian

Concert Band Festival and Canadian Choral Festival.

flamenco occurred during the first half of the nineteenth century among the European

,gypsies, who performed a vocal blend of folk music, well -travelled over many lands before

settling among the Andalucians. In fact, the guitar was introduced during the latter part

of the last century and, since, has quickly spread from a closed environment, around

the world. Today, the flamenco guitarist, especially Pena (and Montoya and Ricardo),

has preserved the art form, even in the wake of the new bands content on debasing the

music, while attempting to cross modern pop barriers.

"There is a great deal of reflection in the music," Pena continues. "Reflection about

life, about deep feelings and about pain. This is really the kind of technique you have to

master. In my case, I like to do things spontaneously and I don't like to prepare

things necessarily as I'm going to record them. There is some pressure, because you have to do it the first time. I set out to do one

performance, like I was in a concert situation, and even if there are some mistakes, that is the way I like it and I leave it

directly to be cut." Pena adds he doesn't like his recordings

at all, as each performance of each song changes daily, hence his music never remains

static or stale and, in most instances, they change for the better. Naturally, as an artist,

he is not worried about money, he records for love and nothing else.

"I haven't thought much about the commercial success of my music, because I

was required to do a record and that's what I did. If there is any consideration that I must take in the future, it is to be honest with my

music," he concludes. "But, looking further ahead, into more commercial areas, I will

certaily consider that with Nimbus. Although I think our main dedication is to present an

artistic expression as honest as possible without any consideration for commercial

ambition. I think flamenco has that in itself anyway: flamenco is commercial."

balanced, adding a cushion of sound for Grade's skillfully -projected vocals. I've Got A Dream has been taken as the

It's going to be tough to follow up on the success of his debut, but obviously

this talented vocalist is on the right track. Each well written and

meticulously produced song is perfectly suited for radio. In fact, this

record should certainly fare extremely well south of the border, If it isn't

already. Heavy handed helpers include Andy Goldmark, Brian MacLeod, Tim

Thomey and Celine Dion, on Can't Live With You, Can't Live Without You, an

obvious second single choice, even though that will be quite a difficult

decision, a powerful testament to this album's overall quality. GB

EMI E1.91401 -F After a long period of layoff to fulfill their respective solo desires, the band

is back together to make another at- tempt to sell their brand of nostalgic

rock 'n' roll. Producer Dave Edmunds must have been comfortable with their

original sound, as there are no striking changes to report. Debut single, Bring

It Back Again, should do well, although this LP is not as CHR friendly as the

Cats' first record. Suffice to say that If you liked Built For Speed, you'll

    probably like this one. RG
