dailies. Fortunately, the charges against Naglerwere withdrawn. The Crown conceded it didn'thave a case. Too bad the press couldn't havedetermined that before putting Nagler throughthe ringer. Anyway, as it turned out, theToronto Star went out of its way to clearNagler's name with a full page piece on him.It must have been hell for him during thatperiod of police investigation, lawyer's costsand a pokey finger from the press. When amanager with the stature of Bruce Davidsenstood by his artist the way he did (RPM - Oct.26/91), there had to be something more to thestory. (EC: The truth will come out . . .

sometimes!!!)

A nation of wimps ... ? Whether you agreeor disagree with Bryan Adams, you have togive him credit for at least speaking out againstwhat he believes is wrong. outburst isn'tgoing to change the rules so he can play thegame his way, but he sure brought attention toCancon (EC: The proper spelling . . . !) Eventhe Wall Street Journal is interested ininterviewing Adams, but he better remainunavailable. These guys have a way of ferretingout the real truth. Like, how come Bruce Allentook Adams away from A&M in Canada andhad him signed to the US company? Themillion or so dollars that went stateside couldhave seeded several Cancon projects. Anyway,it can't be very important, Allan Fotheringham, who beds down most of the time on the "wetcoast" hasn't discovered Adams, nor has DianeFrancis. Of course, she must be very busyworking on that expose of Toronto's SkyDome.(EC: I can hardly wait . . . 0

Too late to take bows . . . ! When therevitalized 0 Canada had its day on NewYear's Day, and some of the cluck clucking, doubting doubters realized they were wrong, the silence was deafening. There was thequestion as to why more of Canada's big starshadn't been included. Well, Ross Carlin, whogot the project under way, did in fact contactsome of the big names, and they refused.Humble Ross, of course, would only publiclyreport that they were either on tour orunavailable for various reasons. One giant, legend in his own mind, country star, whowears the Canadian flag as a vest, said hedidn't have time, meaning he didn't write it.Another said she didn't like the song, andothers just ignored him. CTV will be doing aspecial on the anthem over the next couple ofweeks. Kurt Browning is working a routinearound it, and the Famous People Players areworking it into a sketch. The people behindthe voices on the recording are real Canconstars . . . who had the time. (EC: And theyobviously "left their egos at the door . ." anoft -quoted bit of humour, used to tears, byGrizzly Allen during one of his weakerCANADIAN moments . . . ii!)

Finally the truth . . I The much abused andmisunderstood Bryan Adams got a real boostwhen the Wall Street Journal asked him to tellall about being called un-Canadian. I'd givethis space to see thatpiece. We investigated to

\ find out who called him un-Canadian and

zeroed in on Keith Spicer, but then we foundout it couldn't have been him since he wasworking on holding Canada together at thetime. Then the Prime Minister was said to bethe culprit, but his office claimed onlyCanadians get the Order of Canada and BryanAdams accepted his graciously. It finallynarrowed down to Bryan Adams himself, referring to himself as un-Canadian as a resultof having only 1/8th of the song he had writtenwith a foreigner. The dailies misunderstoodand were led to believe it was something theCRTC purposely did 22 years ago to upsetBryan. (EC: Is there any way we can get EricLindros involved in all of this???)

Heady teapot stuff ... ! Grizzlies Allen andAdams have a few comments. Allen comparesthe business to the WWF. Get serious! Thisbusiness is 100% non -hype. Bryan Adamsmade his views known in an article in theVancouver Sun (reprinted from an interviewby Liam Fay in Dublin's Hot Press). We hopeto get permission to reprintparts of the article, but language like this has never been used inRPM before. (EC: RPM the pure??? Whatlanguage have we ever avoided???) Try to geta copy. I understand BA was running aroundVancouver trying to buy up every copy. (EC:Who is BA .. . ?) There's a chewed -up piece ofcarrot sticking to my tape recorder . . . !!

Watch a falling star ... ! When you got itand greed and poor management enters thepicture, all of a sudden "you don't got it nomore." Not a quote from, nor is it aboutGrizzly Allen. (EC: So far, 80 per cent ofyourcolumn is about GA . . .

It will be a short winter . . . ! Keyboardist Annie Reisler gains interest with debutmedium rotation, feature play, unlimitedplay, and "excellent response" from Barbara McKeeat CFLG-FM Cornwall and Tom Brauer atVancouver's CHQM-FM.

A follow-up instrumental is now beingreadied for a March release by RDRPromotions.

Toronto keyboardist Annie Reisler has madean impact on easy listening programmers withher debut single, Solitude. The Reislerorig inalwas released on RDR Promopak 14, withproducer credits going to David Burt and JohnHerberman.

Reisler gained much of her songwritingtalent by composing songs for children. Hermusic is used in several elementary schoolsand has also interested a number of artists whorecord children's songs. With this interest inher songwriting, Reisler began to concentrateon composing instrumentals. This led to herrecording of Solitude, an excellent windowinto her skills on synthesizers.

Reisler's music reflects her early yearswhen, at the age of three, she was separatedfrom her parents and spent eight years in aMontreal orphanage. She recalls that, as thebaby of the home, "I was quickly dubbed'Little Orphan Annie' by the older children."

The orphanage closed down when Reislerwas 11 and she was shunted, "almost yearly, from foster home to foster home until I was18. If

Marrying young and having two childrenleft little time for Reisler's musical ambitions, but she did maintain her interest in the piano, which led to writing Solitude. "I was in amelancholy mood and the melody of Solitudebegan flowing out. It was an expression of myemotions that still haunt me from the past."

Reisler has been tracking the single and,to date, 47 radio stations have reported light to

COVER STORY - by David Pierson

A 300 voice repertoire makes Gagnon a greatHalfway through a phone interview withCanada's wunderkind impressionist AndrePhilippe Gagnon, the affable, funny entertainerreceives another call and politely asks thereporter if he can hold.

Sure, why not? The hotel phone musicisn't too awful.

Gagnon returns five minutes later. "Oh,are you still there? Sorry about that, that wasmy old boss. I used to work in a shoe store andI took time off once in awhile to enter amateurcontests and he used to tell me that I'd neverget anywhere and he'd give me a thousanddollars if I ever did," Gagnon says laughing.

Did he ever collect?"Well, he opened an art gallery and after

I was on the Tonight Show he sent me apainting. So yes, I think we're square."

It was that '85 performance on Carson, doing all the voices from the We Are TheWorld song, that shot Gagnon to national andinternational stardom.

Not that it was an easy one-two step tofame and riches after that appearance. Gagnoncould very easily earn the title of Canada'shardest working man in show business. Heroutinely does over 200 peformances a yeararound the world, with a sweat drenching, twoand half hour show, that leaves packed theatresringing with standing ovations for his over300 voice impersonation repertoire.

Born in Loretteville, Quebec in 1960,Gagnon's show reflects the music and culturehe grew up with, of course, with a very funnycomic twist. Rambo plays Woodstock, BobDylan sings Feelings and the Beach Boysmeet Jaws. Gagnon gets his comic materialfrom his partner, Stcphanc Laporte, whom hemet at Montreal's Just For Laughs festival in'85.

It was at that festival that Gagnon met hisfour backing musicians whom he says "haveto be impressionists in their own way as they'redoing music from Bing Crosby to Bon Jovi."

Gagnon is extremely popular in his homeprovince of Quebec, drawing over 525,000people to his shows in '86 and breaking thatrecord in '87 and '88. In '89 he became thefirst Quebecer to host the Juno Awards inEnglish and followed that up with aperformance at the gala opening of Toronto'sSkyDome.

Gagnon is currently on his fourth crossCanada tourbreaking in new English material.

Think of the royalties ... The Two Roomsalbum has charted yet another song. YourSong, performed by Rod Stewart, is the second -highest add at No. 73. Only The KLF' s Justified& Ancient debuts higher, at No. 63. YourSong makes four Elton John and BernieTaupin songs on the Hit Tracks chart. Theothers are: Daniel at No. 26, Levon at No. 36and Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me,which climbs into the No. 1 spot.

Dig out the record book! With Don't LetThe Sun Go Down On Me hitting No. 1 thisweek, George Michael and Elton John nowhold the record for the most successful artiststo ever team up and record a No. 1 song.Between the two, they have a total of 19 No.1 songs as solo artists. Name the two whopreviously held that distinction.

Some new in with the old. The Top 10 onthe Hit Tracks chart is filled with artists who'vebeen there plenty of times, but there are somenewcomers. R.S.F. and Nirvana both maketheir Top 10 debuts this week. I'm Too Sexyclimbs to No. 6 and Smells Like Teen Spiritholds the No. 10 spot.

The nickname -a -week man. One of thereasons Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit hasbeen able to crack the Top 10 is Vancouver'sLG 73. Pat Cardinal lists the song among theirTop 5. Cardinal seems to have a differentnickname with every chart. "Homeboy" and"Amadeus" are among the current ones.

Some jump .. ! One 2 One's Peace Of Mindclimbs 36 spots to No. 25. It wasn't the biggestjump of the week though. Paul Young's remakeof What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted leapsan impressive 52 places to No. 45. Young'slast remake was also successful for him. Hetook the Chi-Lites Oh Girl to No. 4 in 1990.

Gotchal I have a feeling that very few peoplegot the answer to this one. The team with themost combined No. 1 songs to record a chart -topper before this week was the team of EltonJohn and Kiki Dee. Between them they have atotal of 12 No. 1 songs (12 for Elton and nonefor Dee). Now in third place is Paul McCartneyand Stevie Wonder, who took Ebony & Ivoryto the top in 1982 (11 No. l's between them).Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney are nextwith 10 No. l's (Their duet Say, Say, Say hitthe top in 1983).

RPM - February 15, 1992 - 7

He'll return to Quebec for an extendedengagement in March and then he'll be off toParis in April.

How does his Quebec French go overwith the notorious snobbish Parisians?

"Oh, I imitiate a Paris accent and I'mfine," Gagnon says with a laugh.

For the future Gagnon will continue toperform as long as his voice holds out, aprospect that terrifies the performance lovingimpersonator.

"I knock on wood every day for the factthat I've never had a problem with my throator voice. I just got a nice clipping from afriend who sent me an article where a doctorwas talking about singers and performers who.have throat problems. And he specificallymentioned me as an amazing example of throatresiliency, considering all the voices that I do.I never want to stop."

Simultaneous Canada/USrelease for Frozen GhostAtlantic has scheduled Feb. 10 as the US andCanadian release date for Frozen Ghost'ssingle Head Over Heels.

The Toronto -based Frozen Ghost (RPM- Cover Story - Feb. 1/92) are currently makinggood chart gains with their Canadian releaseof Shake Your Spirit, the title track of theirlatest WEA album.

Keyboardist David Rashed is ecstaticabout the new album. "It's like mixingeverything we've ever done . . . there's stuffon here that's heavier than anything onNuthouse and funkier than anything on thesecond album. We've never felt so good doinga record as we do now."

Part Four of a series

Independents and majors hunkering down to surviveAlong with "cautious optimism", both the independents and majors are obviouslyworking much closer with each other. National distribution for the independentsector is the key for its survival. Searching out new talent, to be funded in part byFACTOR, lessens the load on the majors, so naturally a harmonious meeting ofminds is necessary.

Aquarius to venture intonew territory in '92Keith Brown - PresidentAquarius RecordsFrom Aquarius Records' point of view, 1991will be remembered for the volume of"catalogue CDs" we sold. Lower CD pricesare bringing a lot of older consumers back tothe stores. At the same time, the youngerconsumer can now get hit product on CD forthe price of 50 cigarettes.

In '91 catalogue kept us going. In '92 weexpect hit product to be the big story.

Leading the hit list is Sass Jordan, whohas finally made the record she always wantedto make. I'm sure that Racine will do verywell.

Debbie Johnson's So Excited album wasour only new release in '91. The first single,I' ll Respect You, has opened a lot of doors andI expect '92 will see Debbie having the time ofher life.

In early spring, Aquarius will unveil anew Sword with the release of a verycommercial hard rock album. Producer AldoNova has worked with Sword on a completemakeover. Forget the Ozzie -Maiden past,Sword is now mainstream.

And then there's Jerry Jerry & The Sonsof Rhythm Orchestra. Someday, Jerry may bemainstream, but I doubt it. On the other hand,I'm convinced that his new album, Don'tMind If I Do, will still be selling fifteen yearsfrom now.

Which brings me back to catalogue. We'repretty well organized in that department. In fact, with a new Corey Hart album due onSire/WEA Canada this spring, we could belooking at even stronger catalogue sales thisyear.

As always, there will be surprises. Wewill debut a couple of new artists. Also watchfor Aquarius to venture into territory that isnew for us. Througout our 22 -year history, wehave had several exceptional years. Everyindication is that '92 will be one of them.

"It was the best of times ..it was the worst of times."

- Charles DickensAlexander Mair - PresidentAttic Records1991 was a difficult time economically, andthere is no need to dwell on the currentproblems. However, it was also a great yearfor Canadian artists, both domestically andinternationally. Celine Dion, Crash TestDummies and others had multi -platinumCanadian sales, and impact internationally.

Tom Cochrane had the biggest album of hiscareer, and will be the subject of a major U.S.push. Bruce Cockburn is poised to have thebiggest record of his career. Spearheaded bythe success of Barenaked Ladies, a number ofindependently released artists are poised tobreakthrough in 1992.

Attic certified three gold albums (LeeAaron's Some girls Do, Maestro Fresh Wes'Black Tie Affair and Digital Underground'sSex Packets). Lee's previous release,Bodyrock, certified double platinum. Laterthis month, we'll release the first single fromHaywire's new album - watch out! Those whohave heard itpredict multiplatinum. Upcomingreleases include new material from MaestroFresh Wes, Jennifer Warnes, Bourne &MacLeod, Weird Al Yankovic and Art OfNoise. Continuing sales on Lee Aaron, DigitalUnderground, Kid 'N Play and Joey Ferrerawill keep the cash registers ringing. Due toincreasing costs, a number of underperformingartists were dropped. These will be replacedon our roster by some exciting new Canadianacts.

Government involvement in the musicindustry continues to be controversial. I believeit is necessary, both indirectly (Canadiancontent regulations, copyright reform, etc.),and directly (Sound Recording DevelopmentProgram, provincial support, etc.). TheCanadian music industry already brings over$250 million into Canada and is a major growthindustry. The industry would be foolish to notwant to increase this success as quickly aspossible, and to not treat the government asour partners in the process. After all, they arealready our partners in our successes. Just askRevenue Canada!

It's going to be a yearof tightened beltsBrian Robertson - PresidentCRIAIf you mention the year 1991 too much aroundthe Canadian record industry you're liable tosee a few people running for cover and notwithout reason. They had witnessed a majorretail bankruptcy, the return of the recession, the death of vinyl, the decline of the analoguecassette, questions about the future ofCanadian independent labels, concertaudiences missing in action, layoffs andconsolidations in the U.S. industry and an endof year price -cutting free-for-all by majormarket retailers.

What the guys hiding under the tablewould have missed however, is the wonderfulpiss -on -the -recession attitudes of emergingtalents such as Crash Test Dummies, LoreenaMcKennitt and the Tragically Hip and the

coming -at -you -again successes of BryanAdams, Tom Cochrane Celine Dion, Rush andothers.

They would also have missed a prettygood end of year retail sales performance bythe industry in the face of a collapsingeconomy.

Additionally, in December, a few intrepidindustry association types were heartened tolearn that after 15 years of lobbying, performing (Neighborouring) rights for recordcompanies and performing artists and rentalrights and yes, maybe even a home tapingright, had moved a giant step down the path tobecoming reality with recommended revisionsto the Copyright Act.

1992 is filled with both apprehensionand optimism.

It is going to be a year of tightened beltsand smaller margins. Budgets are going to bedrawn up and projections made with fingerscrossed. The upside to it all is that the newslimmed -down look of the industry willprobably look good on it as it bravely heads oninto the nineties.

New technologies will be making theirmark on the industry this year.

In January, CRIA announced theintroduction of the International StandardRecording Code (ISRC) in Canada. This newprocess allows copyright and ownershipinformation to be inserted into the sub -code ofa sound recording so that it can be identifiedanywhere in the world by performing rightsorganizations or for enforcement purposes.

In September, look for the NorthAmerican launch of the Digital CompactCassette (DCC). Record companies and recordand hardware retailers will work together toestablish this new and exciting digital format. It will eventually replace the dying analoguecassette and should stimulate sales in thewalkman and in -car markets.

Make sure you track the progress of thenew copyright legislation as it makes its waythrough the drafting and legislation process.Support it actively where you can. Theexploitation of our music and recordings iswidespread and meaningful rights have to beput in place in order to secure a future for ourindustry.

Look also for initiatives by CRIA, CIRPAand SOPROQ and other industry groups toestablish a structure to increase the efficiencyof exporting Canadian music and recordingsto the international marketplace.

It has long been recognized that Canadarepresents only 4 percent of the world marketand that, at best, Canadian sales will cover theoriginal investment. Profits have to be soughtoutside of these borders in the internationalmarket.

The framework of an export -orientedmarketing company is being developed incooperation with the federal government and, once in place, should provide an additionaland invaluable lifeline into the worldmarketplace.

1992 is not a year for the faint of heart butit is a year of opportunities and challenge andI believe the industry is more than up to thetask.

COWBOY JUNKIESblack eyed manRCA - 7863-61049-2-N

You can never blame Cowboy Junkiesfor sounding like any other band. ThiSalbum once again has that distinctivesound. It may be a little rockier inparts, but that familiar blend of folk, pop, blues and country still dominatesblack eyed man. Michael Timminswrote all but two of the tracks andproduced the album. He says a lot ofthings on this album. He evenmanages a shot at the metric systemon A Horse In The Country. The lyricsread "The money would be prettygood if a quart of milk were still adollar or even if a quart of milk werestill a quart." There is a nice smoothsound to black eyed man. Particularlymelodic are Oregon Hill, If You WereThe Woman And I Was The Man andTo Live Is To Fly.(CD reviewed)
