The Junos - the star system is working!!!This year's Juno Awards presentation (Nov.4) would indicate that Canada's star system isfinally in place. The 90 -min. television spec-tacular is no longer an industry -orientedevent nor is it "just another CBC varietyspecial". After 15 years of pushing and pull-ing and dealing more with politics than theresources at hand - the Junos have beenelevated into a recognizable national happen-ing.

Produced by Perry Rosemond, in con-junction with the Canadian Academy ofRecording Arts & Sciences (CARAS), and theCBC, the Junos were hosted by Andrea Mar-tin and Martin Short, a pair of professionalswhose unique brand of comedy set the pacefor the marathon showcasing of talent and infact, added a note of relief to what couldhave been a boring session

There was some criticism of the show,which will probably not go unnoticedelsewhere in this edition, but on average, theconcensus of opinion by industry peoplewould put this year's Junos in the "best yet"category.

Surprises, there were very few. BryanAdams made a fairly good sweep - taking 3out of 5 awards he was nominated for (MaleVocalist, Album and Songwriter, the lattershared with Jim Valiance). Last year he won4 Junos - the 4th being as Producer of theYear.

It was obvious from the audience reac-tion that Corey Hart's win of the Best Single

(Never Surrender) certainly was a highlight ofthe evening, being as he was up againstAdams. Never Surrender has been on theRPM 100 singles survey for 26 weeks, topp-ing the chart on July 6, a position it held for 4consecutive weeks.

Another well -deserved win was theGowan video of A Criminal Mind, whichwon director Rob Quartly the Video Juno ofThe Year.

Tina Turner brought the house to its feetwhen she was brought on stage to make thepresentation of the International Single ofThe Year, which went to Foreigner for I

Want To Know What Love Is. Turner wasn'tfinished however, much to the delight of theaudience as she went on to perform her newsingle, One Of The Living, and then broughtBryan Adams on stage for a duet of It's OnlyLove

A special Juno was presented to PrimeMinister Brian Mulroney by this year's Pro-ducer of The Year, David Foster. The PrimeMinister accepted the award on behalf of theCanadian people. The Juno was for the TearsAre Not Enough single by Northern Lights,which was produced and co -written by Fosterwith Bryan Adams, and which raised morethan $2.5 million for the African ReliefFund. It was Foster's suggestion that the peo-ple of Canada be presented with this specialJuno.

There were even R&Bawards. I heard Liberty Silver being interview-ed and she said the R&B award should be foreverybody. Even Bryan Adams might win it.Is she trying to get P.G. started again?? Bythe way, in my book, Liberty Silver stole theshow.

TEN O'CLOCK??? What is this an en-durance test? From 4.30 to 12.30 is EIGHTHOURS!!! That's a long time. Don't give ustoo much of a'good thing. Yes, Luba did looklike a grape. (EC:Yeah! But wasn't shegreat). And the PM standing in front of theReagan -like podium with the crest. . .I don'tknow!

From where I sat . . . !!!The PR and handling of the press and othermedia at the Junos was exceptional - and agreat deal of credit should go to JoanneSmale and Carol Markes-George. They did afantastic job in spite of the stampeding by allthose writers. (EC:Where the hell did they allcome from?) For a while there I thought wewere going to be over-Junoed. At the eventitself . . . the press was handled very well, andagain the PR was outstanding. Has this in-dustry moved ahead . . . . ALRIGHT!!

One slipped past us!!Whenever an ad comes into RPM'sclassifieds and specifies gender, we simplychange it to obey this country's rights. Well,one slipped past us and didn't the malechauvinists get excited? We actually used theword female. (EC: Where was CaptainHighliner that day?? Or anyday???) If weever go to war, will we conscript "persons"?Will a female ever play for the Maple Leafsor Blue Jays??? Should we advertise that amale stripper is required . . . and they can beeither male or female?? The real question is .. . would they have hired a guy???

Is that really him . . . ??Someone pointed to a well-known Canadianartist and referred to him as "the very heavilysubsidized so-and-so . . . .!!"

Play ball or write orders???Rumour has it that WEA is looking for asalesPERSON for their Toronto Branch. Thelucky applicant must be able to play left fieldand bat right-handed. By the way the WEAbunch on the West Coast are "lording" itover the other branches. The VancouverBranch has been the "Branch of the Month"for the last 3 months. Why don't you grab aswitch-hitter from Vancouver Garry ??

Excuse meIs there a problem in this country over what isbeing referred to as "explicit lyrics" . . . ??There hasn't been . . . but CBC-TV are doin4their best to create one. If there's one sureway to sell a lot of records . . . bringing atten-tion to them is the way to do it. Putting awarning sticker on an album is a sure way tomake it a top seller.

Now, who gets what free . . . ??While the Toronto Star is waging a gallantfight to find out exactly who got free ticketsfor the Bruce Springsteen concert recentlyheld in the Big Potato - the Star claims theywould like to list the names. We alwaysthought newspapers got freebies andwondered if their names would be there aswell. Meanwhile somebody asked whyMichael Cohl wasn't invited to the Junos.Perhaps the Star would like to print thenames of those who got free tickets to the Junos.

The biggest problem facing theCD market is the availability of product.Sony has taken over the CBS CD plant inTerra Haute, Indiana, and rumours are rifethat a couple, or 3 plants are on the drawingboard in the U.S. and at least 4 in Canada.With so many being involved in this new"lab -type" manufacturing process, therecould be a lot of confusion. I would hope thatthese people would consider entering into ajoint venture with a free-standing agreement.That way, the market could be serviced veryquickly and probably avoid many of the pro-blems that have been plaguing the manufac-turing of CD's - not to mention the profit fac-tor.

Canadian fans can expect lots of new material.

We've just finished an amazing video for the title track to Razor's Evil Invaders LP.

Directed by Chris Terry (Honeymoon Suite, Nylons, Helix) it's a superb

documentary/concept-style video from this noted film-maker.

New on your desk is the debut LP from Montreal's Dagger (Not Afraid Of The

Night). Key cuts are Do It Again, It's Alright, and Give 'Em What They Want. Group is

managed by Paul Levesque (Luba). Expect some solid touring to support this release.

Quality readies release of Jewel Of The Nile

Quality is preparing an early December release of the soundtrack from the 20th Cen-

tury Fox film, Jewel Of The Nile, the sequel to Romancing The Stone. The film, starring

Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, opens across Canada Dec. 11. In addition to tracks from various Jive artists, the album will contain several tracks

by Billy Ocean including a single which ships to radio Nov. 15. Ocean's current album,

Country videocassettes are popular There has been indications that videocassettes

of country performers are beginning to become popular. The latest come from a teaming of Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton

and from Ronnie Milsap. Released in both Beta and VHS, Kenny and Dolly's entry is titled Real Love and contains 30 of their per-

formances including Islands In The Sun, Dol- ly's solo of Baby I'm Burnin, and Kenny's solo of Crazy. The Milsap cassette, also in Beta and VHS is titled Golden Video Hits and

includes Any Day Now, Lost In The Fifties Tonight, and There's No Getting Over Me.

A cruel blow to Family Brown Country music, in the past few years, hasn't

been very well accepted as categories in the

pop and rock -oriented Juno Awards and it

was devastating to see this attitude so blatant- ly revealed this year. The excitement of being

nominated for a Juno goes without saying, but being asked to perform on this highly

popular television extravaganza would be the icing on the cake. The Family Brown, one of

the most recognizable country groups in the nation, were nominated as Best Country Group, which they won, and they were asked

to perform, which they did, but not as part of the televised portion of the show. How rewar-

age of country music to the 2 million -plus viewers of this TV special.

New album from McLauchlan Murray McLauchlan is on release with his

newest True North LP, entitled Midnight Break. The label issued 2 singles from the album, which might be a little confusing to

programmers. One of the singles, I'm Best At Loving You, has been tagged as country,

while When You Become A Memory is for the pop programmers.

Second single for Donna Green Snowy River recording artist, Donna Green,

has released her second single for the label titled Smile And Walk Away. This follows up

her summer release of I'm Gonna Get Over You. Both were written- by Ottawa's Alex

Sinclair, who co -produced the session with Gwen Swick.

Skaggs plays West Coast The Vancouver -based MCM & Associates

have set 2 dates for Epic country star Ricky Skaggs. The first is at Vancouver's Queen

Elizabeth Theatre (Nov. 17) followed by Vic- toria's Royal Theatre (18). Katy Moffatt,

who was an Academy of Country Music New Female Artist nominee, opens both shows.

Recognizing Cancon country More and more country programmers are in-

tegrating their American and Canadian country records for their charts and playlists.

Many country programmers are finding it difficult to make a choice as to what should

go on the playlist and they've been giving their listeners the opportunity to choose. Sur-

prisingly enough, listeners are indicating that they like the approach of some of the Cancon

artists, who have become more independent in their direction. Sampling stations across

the country lately is very encouraging for a Cancon watcher. There are new acts beginn-

ing to get a foot in the door i.e. Pat Blyth, the Cole Younger Band, Rescue, Kevin Simpson, The Ellis Family Band, and The Stoker

Brothers, not to mention big winners like Terry Carisse, Terry Sumsion, and Family

Brown. There's obviously a Cancon country star system beginning to emerge.

London setting credited for MUSEXPO successMUSEXPO '85, the 10th InternationalRecord/Video and Music Industry Market,and VIDEXPO '85, the 4th InternationalVideo Exposition and Conference was held inLondon for the first time (Oct. 16-18) and,according to the organizers, was "quite suc-cessful". There were more than 600 com-panies from 33 countries participating in bothevents, drawing record/video executives andprofessionals from the U.K., U.S.A.Canada, West Germany, The Netherlands,Italy, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Japan, andGreece, to name just a few.

The seminars, held each of the 3 morn-ings were panelled by experts in their fieldwho tackled several situations, and quite suc-cessfully, with regard to problem areas intheir respective endeavours. The panelscovered Music Video Programming andMarketing, Video Programming and

Carsen, and Jochen Mogwitz, Interna-tional Sales Director for Agfa-Gevaert inGermany, announced the appointment of theformer as exclusive Canadian distributor forthe new audio cassette tapes to the consumermarket.

The new cassettes are actually improvedversions of the Agfa line. The tapes areavailable in both 60 and 90 minute formatsand in 4 different types: Agfa FeI Fer-rocolour HD, FE I -S Superferro HDX, CrIIStereoChrom HD, and CR II -S SuperChrom.

Other live artists showcases during the 3days were The Roaring Boys at the Marquee,and the JoBoxers at the Roof Gardens Club.

Prominent Canadian industry peopleseen at this year's event included AlexanderMair, President Attic Records; Steve Thom-son, President Backstage Productions Inter-national; Mark Goldman, Director, AudioProducts, CBC Enterprises/Radio-Canada;Fred Rich, President A.R.S.; and CarolePope, of Rough Trade. The latter was inLondon promoting a script for a TV movie.

Roddy S. Shashoua, Chairman of Inter-national Trade and Exhibitions, organizersof the event, was obviously very happy withthe showing. The material was taken fromtheir recently completed World Slavery tour.The tour began in Poland in August of 1984and after performances in 24 countries,wound down in California in July of thisyear.

The album contains 3 sides culled from 4nights at the Long Beach Arena in LosAngeles. Side 4 was lifted from their Ham-mersmith Odeon shows in London last yearand is mostly older material.
