CHURCH OF THE HOLY FAMILY VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA

Bishop Barron’s The SacramentBishop Barron takes a fresh look at the seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church. The great sacraments of the Church are true encounters with Christ. Through the seven sacraments of the Church, Jesus is present. The sacraments have endured for thousands of years and blessed countless lives. Everything in the Church’s life comes from and returns to them. Bishop Barron presents lively talks on the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist), the Sacraments of Healing (Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick), and finally, the Sacraments of Vocation or Mission (Matrimony and Holy Orders).

DIOCESAN-WIDE MASSES FOR THE FEAST OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL –

SEPTEMBER 26/27

Saint Vincent de Paul is our Diocesan Patron Saint and we will celebrate his Feast Day at all Masses this weekend (September 26/27).

Saint Vincent de Paul was born on April 24, 1581, in Pouy, France, and died on September 27, 1660, in Paris. He was canonized in 1737 and his feast day is September 27. He was ordained a priest in 1604 in Toulouse and dedicated much of his priesthood to serving the poor.

He founded Congregation of the Mission (Lazarists, or Vincentians) dedicated to preaching missions to the peasantry and for educating and training a pastoral clergy. He co-founded with St. Louise de Marillac the Daughters of Charity who were devoted to active charitable works. With the support of wealthy women in Paris, he advocated for missionary projects, the founding of hospitals, and gathering relief funds for the victims of war and galley slavery. Renowned for his compassion, humility, and generosity, especially towards the poor, Saint Vincent has been designated the patron saint of charitable societies.

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic charitable organization dedicated to the service of the poor, was founded by Blessed Antoine Frédéric Ozanam in 1833. The society is today present in 153 countries.

Saint Vincent de Paul was designated the Patron Saint for the Diocese of Richmond by Bishop Whelan in the 1840s. Following the Yellow Fever epidemic, the Sisters of Charity founded Saint Vincent de Paul Hospital in Norfolk in 1855 as Norfolk’s first civilian and public hospital.

HOLY FAMILY PRISON MINISTRY

When was the last time you really prayed the Lord’s Prayer meaningfully? Although we had said this prayer since childhood, have we allowed its words to guide our lives and direct out thoughts and actions.

We pray “forgive us this day our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Wouldn’t we be most grateful to have been forgiven by others for our every transgression! We expect Our Lord to be ever merciful to us but are we merciful to our fellow humans?

Over the past fifty years in the United States billions of dollars have been spent to build the largest prison system in the world. Currently, there are more than 2.2. million people-nearly one out of every 100 people in the country in prisons and jails. Our country has 5% of the world’s population but 25% of the prisoners. Yet mass incarceration has not made us safe.

There is need for a prison system that protects the population from violent and dangerous law breakers. But the pendulum of justice over the past fifty years has unbalanced social justice to a crisis degree. Imagine how many more teachers, counsellors and first responders we could employ with the money saved from a just prison system.

Racial injustice plays a big part in this problem. The amount of minority people incarcerated far out numbers the percentage of the total population. Government funds could be better used to provide meaningful employment, affordable housing, better education to those trying to get out of a life on the margin.

Holy Family Parish Prison Ministry has learned in a few short years how difficult it is for released inmates to gain housing, employment and, transportation, etc. There is a great need for all of us to pray the Lord’s Prayer with heartfelt meaning to forgive those who have offended us by helping them to get another chance by donating to the Social Justice Prison Ministry Fund. Currently. We are working with 3 inmates expecting parole shortly and 3 former inmates trying to rejoin society.

Thank you and God Bless! Contact George Horey at 496-1053 for additional information.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION REGISTRATION:

Registration for Christian Formation is open. Please visit the parish website to register. With this in mind, we are asking parents to register their children for in-person Christian Formation by Friday, October 2. We are hoping to start CF mid-October. We will accept students after October 2, but we really need to know which grades can stand on their own and those which may need to be combined with other grades. Your help is much appreciated! If you have any questions please contact, Jeff Mingin in the Parish Office.

Do you like working with the youth of our parish? Are you looking for a way to become more involved in your parish community? Then the EDGE Team is the ministry for you! FEAST OF SAINT FRANCISBLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

Saturday, October 3, at 11:00 a.m.

Blessing will take place in the Mary Garden.

Please wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

Note: If there is rain, we will gather under the roof at the front entrance.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:”

Our parish will be celebrating our Earth and the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi (the “father of ecology”) on the weekend of October 3/4. This event gives us the special opportunity to pay tribute to Mother Earth by recognizing our origin in Her along with all other creatures. Saint Francis modeled a way for relating to creation, giving attention to Her inherent dignity. He taught that we must love God through, in, with, and because of this world. His life showed that we were made to love the Earth, to cultivate and care for Her rather than dominate Her as an available and consumable object. The celebration will begin on Saturday, October 3, at 11:00 a.m. in The Mary Garden with the “Blessing of the Animals.” There will be a brief Prayer Service by Deacon Bob. (If it rains, it will be under the roof at the front entrance of the Church.) Our liturgical celebrations that weekend will include hymns about our Earth, petitions about creation in the Prayer of the Faithful, and a few comments by Fr. René during the announcements. At all the liturgies there will be pamphlets with the Saint Francis pledge, for your taking, on a table in the Family Room.Brian Alexander will send out a flock note prior to the weekend with more details. Due to COVID-19 we will not have the paper shredder available. We hope to provide this convenience at the celebration of Earth Day in April. One way you can celebrate both our Earth and Saint Francis is to take a few minutes to reflect on how you are part of the Earth and have the responsibility to care for Her. We can also pray for Her well-being.
