Food: Far too many options leave one spoilt for choice. The emirate boasts the best of international cuisine in a 30mile radius. Be careful though, the bigger the name, the bigger the cheque and almost always the higher the disappointment! Lebanese food and burgers are the specials with Shakeshack now having be-come ‘old school’. The best part of Dubai, enjoy your dinner and watch the venue turn from the set of 80’s classic to a house party in a matter of minutes! I highly recom-mend Pai Thai in Madinat Jumei-rah, the best dining experience for a Thai food enthusiast!

Practice Portion control

Watching how much you eat is one of the best ways to lose weight. When you consciously eat less, you reduce your calorie intake by

hundreds and do lose weight. It helps if you read food labels to get a better idea about how many calories are in a single serving and before going for that second helping, wait a few minutes, have a glass of water and then re-consider whether you really need another slice of pie. With practicing portion control you don’t have to cut out whole food groups either like some fad diets advocate. You also get to indulge in your favourite treat occasionally so you don’t feel deprived.

as a serial dieter who considers dieting a hobby now, i have tried every health fad that has come on the market. From my initial foray into the

world of dieting with the protein-heavy atkins, to going completely cold-turkey and quitting all animal foods, if there’s a faddy diet out there, you can bet a chicken wing

i’ve tried it.

Whether my aim is to lose weight or generally adapt a healthier lifestyle that includes more water, more moving about and fewer calories, i am super motivated when i start. But come day

7, my mo-tivation has turned into a combination of hunger + anger = i’m ‘hangry’ and i raid my pantry.

But every time i have ‘broken’ a ‘diet’, i’m riddled with guilt and regret. i realise this has more to do with my mindset regarding dieting than

anything else. Studies show that dieters are more likely to gain weight compared to the non-dieters out there, so that doesn’t help.

However, due to my extensive experience with weight loss, and several attempts at being heal-thier, there are lifestyle changes i’ve made along the way that

ensure sustained motivation and lead to big improvements in the long run.

Drink more Water This is an obvious one but it’s only when I consciously decided to drink around 2-3 litres of water did I realise that I wasn’t drinking enough before. Drinking more water is espe-cially important in the hotter months to avoid dehydration. If you don’t like the boring taste of water, try adding lemon, mint leaves, cucumber or even strawberries to add a subtle flavour to your water. Drinking more water not

only keeps you full when you’re thinking of snacking but it helps shed the few pounds of water weight.

Work out Every little bit of movement helps. It helps more if you enjoy what you’re doing and fol-low a workout routine you can be consistent with. If your activity levels are

sedentary then start with a half hour walk and work your way up to an hour and at a faster pace. Switch up your wor-kout routine every couple of weeks to keep things interesting and fun and to not get stuck in a rut—there’s nothing worse than a boring workout you’ve done countless of times before, you won’t

look forward to it. If your stamina allows it, throw in some high intensity workouts in your regime to really get you sweaty. The more you work out the more your body will crave exercise because the body gets used to the endorphin and adrenaline release. Not to mention I quite like the feeling of seeing how far I can push my body in every work out. Do whatever you want when it comes to exercise but just make sure you stick to it. Consistency will ensure long-term results.

keeP a FooD DiaryWhether you calorie-count on apps like ‘My Fitness

Pal’ or just write down what you eat, you should keep a food diary. Don’t become obsessive obviously but tracking what goes in your mouth will make you more aware of what and how much you’re eating. A food diary will help you see your patterns, positive and negative regarding eating. Do you start your day with a healthy breakfast but reach for that bar of chocolate when you’re stressed? Do you nibble on a calorific snack while watching TV? Do you reach for the first convenient junk food item you see when you get home tired from work? By identifying bad eating habits you can make positive changes to eat better.

eat tructureD mealS anD SnackS Instead of mindlessly reaching for calorific snacks after a meal, make sure

you have three main meals and two snacks. If you eat two snacks (one mid-morning and one late-afternoon) you will be less famished. And if you’re less famished you won’t be reaching for the junk food. The snacks can be veggies with hummus or a piece of fruit, just plan in advance—take your snacks with you wherever you go.

Get in tHe kitcHen Preparing food yourself will make you more aware of what you’re putting on your plate and in your body. You can be in control of how much salt or oil you’re putting and instead add more fruit and vegetables into your meals. You obviously don’t have to prepare all your meals yourself but it does help when you do, because you’re more likely to know how many calories are being consumed.

Get enouGH SleeP Even with the best diet and workout routine, if your sleeping is off then you’re wrecked. Studies show that sleeping less than seven

hours per night can reduce or undo the bene-fits of dieting. Dieters who don’t sleep enough

feel hungrier, less satisfied after meals and don’t have enough energy to exercise. Here’s some science

to back these claims: if you’re suffering from sleep deprivation (even by a couple of days) your body’s ability

to properly use insulin (sto-rage hormone) is completely disrupted. When insulin functions like it’s supposed to, the fat cell prevent storage of fatty acids. But if you become insulin resistant, the fats will circulate in your blood and more insulin will be pumped. This build up of excess insulin causes fat to be stored. Lack of rest will also make you crave food because sleeping less than six hours will trigger the area of your brain that increases your need for food. So if

you’re doing everything else right, don’t forget to get a solid 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

Don’t Beat yourSelF uP This may sound easy but I find this the hardest to practice. If you’re eating right,

working out and doing everything you’re supposed to but give in to temptation and eat that cupcake when you shouldn’t have, it’s okay. Don’t

beat yourself up about it, move on and get back on the wagon from your next meal. One indulgent cupcake won’t undo all the

work you have put in. Just remember to get back on the wagon as soon as you finish that cupcake. Don’t fall into the trap of eating one cupcake and following it up with all the food you can find just because you think ‘well I’ve broken my diet, let’s just smash it into smithereens by eating everything in sight’. Accept what you’ve done, forgive yourself and move on. It’s only a cupcake.

are there any memorable responses you have received for your Work?bold and Whimsical. i think i Want the person to be able to have a laugh or escape reality When vieWing my Work. i’m definitely a day dreamer With an active imagination and i think ive been able to translate some of those thoughts and dreams through my Work.

is there anyone in particular you Would like to create a piece for? Who Would it be and Why? i don’t create commissioned art Work, not because im full of hubris and arrogance, i just find the concept creatively restricting and i dont Work Well if i have to specifically create something for someone With a fixed mindset. hoWever, if i had to give someone one of my paintings id give a painting from my first collection of tWo zebra flamingos merging and detaching from each other all at once to david boWie.. david Was the man behind all the music and personas that inspired me to create and find my inner freak.

name a feW artists Who inspire you.they’re different styles of different artists that i love, but i don’t necessarily use those styles in my Work. my Work is very distinct from others and if someone finds a resemblance or something that they feel is similar to another artist then i guess its a compliment for that artist and i’m glad i could be of help. on a serious note, i think styles to a certain degree and subjects might be the same but every artists should have their oWn signature style.

Page 70: Weekend magzine 5 june, 2016

What is your Work influenced by?my Work has been heavily influenced by music and the animations i Watched as a child. groWing up i absolutely loved henry’s cat, rarg and the romance of betty boop.

the music side of things has an endless list but my first collection Was an homage to a man Who by blood might not be

my father but Was most definitely in the spirit World david boWie, folloWed by i dream of rarg Which Was an installation inspired by the 1988 animation by tony collingWood that bleW my mind.

What is your ultimate goal/dream as an artist?at the end of the day We can only aim as high as the ceilings We place over our heads, hoWever as an artist my approach is very different to that of other people. i don’t really have specific goals or any point to prove. as an artist as long as my Work is appreciated and goes into the homes of people Who Want my Work to be a part of their lives is the most gratifying and satisfying goal.
