Wizard of Oz wows at Week St MaryThe tornado raged and Dorothy and Toto flew through the airin her house landing in Munchkinland, squashing the WickedWitch of the East. The Munchkins, strange and giggly littlepeople, danced their way into audience hearts. Cackling andcrowing at every turn, the Wicked Witch of the Westmanipulated and plotted her way through the play until shemet her demise and melted into a slimy mess. Glinda theGood Witch sparkled in and out of the story, a glowingantidote to the Wicked Witch’s misery. Finally when theWizard of Oz was unmasked as a deceiver, all seemed lost. But Glinda found the magic to help Dorothy back home toKansas for a happy ending.

A traditional story, with the film version now 80 years old, theWizard of Oz was brought to life by an enthusiastic cast oflocal children aged from 6 to 13 from Week St Mary andadjoining parishes who belong to Bright Sparks Music andDrama Club. Songs, solos and scenery transitions weresupported by the live band Notorious and a large team ofregular and occasional local Bright Sparks helpers produced

costumes, scenery and props. This performance was thefirst lit with Bright Sparks’ new lighting rig, an investmentmade possible thanks to the generosity of local donors, clubfundraising and a grant from Cornwall CommunityFoundation.

Hilary Daniel, Director of Bright Sparks, said, “This was anambitious production for such a young cast but they pulled itoff with confidence and verve. The two performances, playedto full houses, were real community events with a myriad ofpeople giving up their time and working so hard to make ithappen. We are very grateful to everyone and lookingforward now to our variety show productions on 4 and 5 July.”
