They can think about solutions that they already know of and activate their prior knowledge to the subject. Objective: Students will apply knowledge that they already have and communicate with other students. They will build off of each others’ ideas and create new ones. They will find a way to organize and record their ideas, such as in a web. This will mostly involve discussing and working together as a group. (Interpersonal- discussing and working together, Linguistic- talking in a group, Spatial/Visual- Forming a visual of ideas or web.) Tuesday Activity: Students will think about the discussions and activity from the previous day. They will write a journal on their thoughts about the topic of solutions creating other problems. They will be asked to think about how they impact the world and environment around them. Do they know of any consequences? Objective: Students will delve within themselves and make the discussions from the previous day more relevant to their own lives. They will think about their own feelings on the subject of solutions creating other problems. They will be assessed upon their journal completion and discussion of their feelings with peers, however, this will mostly be individual work. (Intrapersonal- journaling and individual work and thoughts, Assessment- visual through seeing if journal completed. Language Arts- writing) Wednesday Activity: Students will learn about transportation as a solution, or method, of transporting goods across long distances. The method of transportation that will be the focus of the lesson is transportation by water. This will bring up the topic of oil spills and boats. Students will be asked to come up with

lEmily Weil EDUC 373 Week’s Schedule

Monday- Activity:

Students will be broken up into small groups in which they will brainstorm, discuss, and organize ideas about solutions that have caused other problems. They can think about solutions that they already know of and activate their prior knowledge to the subject.

Objective:

Students will apply knowledge that they already have and communicate with other students. They will build off of each others’ ideas and create new ones. They will find a way to organize and record their ideas, such as in a web. This will mostly involve discussing and working together as a group.

(Interpersonal- discussing and working together, Linguistic- talking in a group, Spatial/Visual- Forming a visual of ideas or web.)

Tuesday Activity:

Students will think about the discussions and activity from the previous day. They will write a journal on their thoughts about the topic of solutions creating other problems. They will be asked to think about how they impact the world and environment around them. Do they know of any consequences?

Objective:

Students will delve within themselves and make the discussions from the previous day more relevant to their own lives.

Language Arts- writing)

Wednesday Activity:

Students will learn about transportation as a solution, or method, of transporting goods across long distances. The method of transportation that will be the focus of the lesson is transportation by water. This will bring up the topic of oil spills and boats. Students will be asked to come up with

different designs of boats and predict how many pennies each boat will hold. (Similar to density activity). They will work in small groups, classify the designs of boats by any means desired, and conduct an experiment in which they observe which boat holds the most or for the longest period of time. They will use the knowledge they gain to infer what type of boat works best and any improvements they could make.

Objective:

The students will learn how to and create different types of boats. They will experience and observe how well the boats hold a certain measurement of pennies. They will learn to infer, predict, and analyze information that they gain through experimentation. Through controlling their experiment, they will become better acquainted with the steps of the Scientific Process and communicating with others their ideas.

(Bodily-Kinesthetic- through manipulation and using hands to create designs, Mathematical-Logical- solving problems and finding ways of making them better, Classify- boats by type or design, Measure- pennies, Observe- how many they hold, Infer- how to make better and how this will affect number held)

Thursday Activity:

(Transportation Pollution Activity). It will begin with a short example of oil barges. We will discuss the consequences of this type of transportation when spills occur. We will talk about how the oil affects the environment it is spilled in.

Next, students will be asked to create a Web on Kidspiration to show other types of transportation and their consequences. (ie: automobiles). They can work in groups if enough computers are not available.

If they prefer to focus on water pollution, they can create a web on the consequences of water pollution and how oil spills kill off plant and animal life.

Objective:

Students will continue study of transportation by water. They will delve into how it helps, and the problems it produces. They will talk about how the change in environment affects the animals and plants that live there. They will research how oil kills off the species and what we can do to help. They will use technology to show and organize their findings. They can also use the Internet for more resources for research. Music could be connected to this when discussing the different types of transportation and the different types of noises they create. Students can talk about how noise pollution also exists and creates another problem with a given solution.

(Musical- Sounds of boats and cars, Indicator 5.4.4- animals and plants needing a certain environment to survive, Predict- what happens in an oil spill, Naturalistic- How we affect the environment)

Friday Activity:

Students will be given a problem. They will need to brainstorm and come up with a few solutions. Then, they will be grouped together with students that have the same problem to solve, and they will discuss their reasoning for their solutions. As a group, they will decide on the best possible solution.

The groups will present their solutions, and they will discuss materials that may be needed to form their solution. They will have the weekend to gather any more ideas or materials and construct their solution, or invention the next week.

Objective:

Students will have a chance to come up with their own solution by applying knowledge and ideas learned previously in the week. They will then have the chance to analyze other students’ solutions and point out what works and what does not work.

Students will also be given the chance to actually construct their ideas and see if they are truly realistic.

(Interpersonal- work with group and help each other and critique each other, Intrapersonal- come up with own solutions, Logical-Mathematical- solve problems using prior knowledge, Art- construct and design)
