Canada's SI,truggling Songsmiths
Canada's songwriters are slowly being recognized butmainly by the Americans. Even in the 30's Canada's song-writers were travelling to New York where the music businesswas, to get some attention. As hard as it is to break into thebusiness and come up with a successful composition, it iseven harder in Canada,. but this situation is improving.
The opposition to Canadian writers was so severe in theearly days that there is a story of a Canadian song that be-came a very famous commercial and theme song. After it wasdisguised as an American song gives some indication of theresistance met by struggling Canadian songwriters. Canadianpublishing firms that would pick up a Canadian songwriters'works are very rare. One of the first breakthroughs were theCanadian Army and Navy show tunes that were Canadian

originations. Even the Canadian -written "The World Is Wait-ing For The Sunrise" by Ernest Seitz and Gene Lockhart(the late actor) was originally a US publication. This tunewas written in 1919.
In 1931, RCA Victor recorded a number of CanadianCollege Songs. They were all Canadian. Later Mart Kenneyand the Happy Gang recorded a number of Canadian copy-rights and although much wasn't being done at least SOME-THING was happening for the Canadiar. songwriter.
In the late 40's BMI Canada set up a publishing firm anddedicated itself toward finding a place in Canada for Cana-dian works. One of their first breakthroughs was "BluebirdOn My Windowsill" which had 18 versions issued on record, another was "Blue Canadian Rockies" with twelve versionsrecorded. The most famous was by Gene Autry. Canada andCanadian songwriters were entering the music picture, "SquidJiggin' Ground" was next. In BMI's files is a tune writtenby Lorne Greene of "Bonanza" which was published in1949. Since that time Greene has not only become famousas a TV star, but just recently with his hit record "Ringo"he is now a pop artist.
The first real glimmer of success came in 1960 andsince that time Canada has slowly but consistantly beenselling Canadian songs to the world market. An interestingfact is that 14 Canadian tunes have shown up on the Germancharts, and foreign versions of Canadian tunes are not raretoday.
One of the most successful recent Canadian copyrightswas "Our Winter Love" by Johnny Cowell.
Canada and Canadian songwriters have come up with avery impressive list of HITS. "Walk Hand In Hand With Me""Man In A Raincoat" "Steel Men" "Baby Beatle Walk""I'll Never Smile Again" "Put Your Dreams Away" "Mont-real" and "Fortune Teller". With Canadian songwriters, wehave just scratched the surface. There are many untappedsources of song and music in Canada that slowly are beingrecognized. The songs and the songwriters are here andproperly arranged and orchestrated we can develop a greatmusic of our own.
One Canadian record producer has refused to take anysessions unless at least half the songs to be recorded areCanadian compositions. "I don't know where there are moregifted songwriters than in Canada and with the proper treat-ment we can produce hit after hit. Once we have the break-through we'll find our writers were always here waiting to bediscovered."
Who knows but some Canadian songwriter is alreadydisguising his songs to look American to make them hits inCanada. IT'S HAPPENED BEFORE.

TREMENDOUS response to our Cross Canada Chart Actionhas made it impossible to include every chart that comes into us, nor every Canadian Content single listed. Howeverevery chart is used in our calculations, and the followingsingles showed considerable action this week. "Once In ALifetime Boy" - Girlfriends (Cal) and "Queen Of The Hop"-Billy and the Martiniques (Tamarac). We will be confined to20 stations and 10 plus 3 hits forthwith and any honourablementions will appear in this column.WE'D LIKE TO DOFF OUR CAPS to a few luminaries in therecord business for their steadfast energies exerted towardthe mammoth task of building an industry for Canada. Ourbusiness needs more people like Bob Martin of Columbia,Mike Doyle of RCA Victor, Paul White of Capitol Records. These are the giants of the giants. Sparton's Harold Poundsfor his tireless efforts to promote our music and records.John Porteous of Arc who was instrumental in the success of"Unless You Care". Bob Pugh and Laurie Hazeltine ofRaleigh Records who as an indie pack a powerful punch forCanadian content. Al Reusch of Aragon records and LesVogt of Jaguar records on the west coast and Tamarac'sStan Klees whose door has been open to new talent and theartist with a problem and who unselfishly has aided bothartist and session and asked nothing in return. These arethe BIG people of the industry that have proven themselvesas giants in the fight to develop a music industry for ALLCANADIANS.
THE RED BARN THEATRE with producers MarigoldCharlesworth and Jean Roberts began rehearsals this weekfor their musical "Cindy -Ella" written by Caryl Brahms andNed Sherrin. The cast is made up of popular Columbia re-cording artist Phyllis Marshall - twenty year old ShirleyMatthews who is well known in Canadian teen circles for herTamarac recordings - Lennie Gibson, Vancouver dancer, singer, actor who will also choreograph the show - andAbbot Anderson, Royal Conservatory scholarship student, who appeared with the Canadian Opera Company during itsrecent season at the O'Keefe Centre. Loretta Lynn, born in OlympiaWashington received her first break with the Zero label fromVancouver which resulted in her becoming a part of the GrandOle Opry. Loretta will be releasing a single shortly with atune written by Ron Kitson, Country Gentleman from CFGM
Toronto. "Happy Birthday" (Decca).MIKE DOYLE of RCA Victor sends news of the farewell
tour of North America by Marian Anderson. Itinerary includesWinnipeg - Nov.27, Calgary - Nov.30, Edmonton - Dec.2,Montreal - Dec.10, Ottawa - Dec.13, Vancouver - Mar.23.The Burl Ives single of "Chim Chim Cheree" from MaryPoppins looks like another success story for Ives. BY WAY OF the Ottawa Journal and Allen Sackmanncomes news of the Chieftones. This group was formed topublicize the Indian Residential School in Edmonton. Theyhave just been signed to a two year contract by a US book-ing agency which promises them 48 weeks of work a year. The Chieftones are four Indian youths dressed in traditionalcostumes, hair in braids with feathers. ETHICS AND DC5. During the recent appearance of theDave Clark Five at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens Nov. 2,whatever favourable image there may have been for theDC5 may quite easily have been damaged by the possiblyuncalled for antics of their representative and road man-ager Rick Picone. During the performance of Bobby Cur-tola, Canada's top teen draw, Picone took the opportunityto complain bitterly and rather loudly over the fact thatCurtola had equal billing with the DC5 and that Curtolahad been on stage too long. Curtola's over enthusiasticfans kept him onstage for a longer period than had sup-posedly been allowed. Possibly this was real showman.ship. He went so far as to threaten to throw Curtola bodilyoff the stage and when this didn't prompt promotersLombardi and Boliska into action he degraded himselfeven more by demanding that Curtola come off stage orhe wouldn't allow the DC5 to go on. This occurred within3 feet of this reporter.
PERHAPS Mr. Picone should be reminded that as aguest in this country he could have done himself, hiscompany and certainly the DC5 a greater service by show-ing a little respect for Canada's top talent, that inci-dentally stood as much chance of upstaging the DaveClark Five as "a snowball's chance of survival in hell".Unfortunately his outburst of bad manners took place infront of a battery of news, radio and TV representatives. One observer was heard to comment "typical". What didthe critics say about the concert? It's a pretty good betthe clippings from the Toronto dailies may be conspicuousby their absence in the DC5 scrapbook.

Dave Mickie has given the Channel 11 Dance Partya big shot in the arm. The Hamilton station is running twomonths ahead on ticket requests. One of Mickie's secrets ishis ability to communicate with the teenager. Proof positive? What other TV dance type show squeezes in 400 teenagerseach week?
Dave Lyman at CKY Winnipeg reports fantastic responseover the reading by Gary Todd of the similarities betweenthe Lincoln and Kennedy assassinations. CKY received thisinformation from WLEC Sandusky, Ohio. Response was soheavy the station rebroadcast the information on 2 other oc-casions. Close to a thousand letters requesting copies havecome into the station plus many people stopping by the sta-tion to pick up copies.
Congratulations to the gang up at CKYL Peace River. The month of November sees them celebrating their tenthyear in the broadcasting business. It would be a nice ges-ture on the part of other broadcasters to send CKYL a con-gratulatory tape.
Johnny Murphy, as always, on the lookout for Canadiantalent reminds us of a new release by Montrealer, RonnieProphet "Ten Years In A Prison". This disc is on Caprihandled by Trans World. Another Murph prediction looks likeit could happen. "So Many Other Boys" by the Esquires onCapitol is destined to be a hit. Ask any "Campus Club"member. You might check our front page chart as well.
When radio person-ities move thesedays they are nolonger considereddrifters. They're go-ing where the actionis. We're glad thismore complimentarydescription has comeabout especiallywhen we hear thenews of Keith Ran-dall moving intoCFCF Montreal.
He/sone of the mostaggressive promo-tion minded radio
personalities we have had the pleasure of knowing. Keithteams up with Franklin Armstrong to do a two -man morningshow. As a last reminder from CKPT Peterboro Keith advisesthat "Don't Make A Fool Of Me" is currently a strong bat-tle champion at 'PT. Keith is a very Canadian minded youngman. The best of luck.
Never underestimate the power of the broadcast medium.R.K. Legge PD at CHEC Lethbridge will attest to this. Re-cently his station embarked on a promotion to instill moreinterest in minor football in Lethbridge. From Ian Mandinand R.K. Legge clowning it up as cheerleaders to the stationpersonnel challenging the football all-stars to a game. Onehundred tickets to the final championship game were givenaway by the station to contest winners. Enthusiasm forsports, particularly football, is running high in Lethbridgethanks to the public service dedication of CHEC.
Happy Hart Kirch popular AM man at CJME for the pastthree years moves over to CJOC Lethbridge. Same time slot.

WES DAKUS of Edmonton is probably the best known WesternCanadian in the pop field. He is one of the few Canadians toever make a noise in the American trades and he did it thehard way, with an instrumental. "Pedro's Pad" (UA) waspicked as a chart item in Music Business. Wes' manager isNorman Petty of Clovis, New Mexico, no stranger to the hitmaking sound. Wes has established Clovis as his home studioand has just released what looks like another hit, "LasVegas Scene" on Quality and will be releasing an LP short-ly. The dream of recording and recording with one of the bestproducers available, came about through a very close friend-ship with Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs ("Sugar Shack").
Wes is one of the few down to earth humble artists whoinsists on giving the limelight to the people who have helpedhim on his climb to the top. For instance, his very tight knitgroup made up of Stu Mitchell, Bob Clarke and Barry Allen. The latter is vocalist, plays rhythm guitar and also recordsfor Quality("Over My Shoulder") and is managed by Petty.Wes also proudly mentions his booking agent, Al Johnson.

GEORGE WILSON at CKFH has been receiving goodreaction to the Harry Belafonte release "Ballads, Blues,Boasters" and "The Original Music From The Rogues" byNelson Riddle and "The Merry Widow" with Patrice Munsel. This is the original cast of "Merry Widow" currently ap-pearing at the O'Keefe Centre. Matt Munro comes up with agreat pleaser "Great Songs From The Movies" on Capitol.
ART COLLINS at CFRB suggests you give a listen tothe new Hugo Winterhalter single of the well known AmesBrothers hit "You You You" on Capitol and "This Is Love"by Johnny Mathis on Mercury. "Just great for GMP program-ming" also "Funny World" with Jane Morgan doing a prettyballad. Quality's LP release of Lucille Starr "IntroducingThe Canadian Sweethearts" and Bob Regan poses a questionfor Art. How come they sing the American lyrics to "ThisLand Is My Land"? Vanguard comes up with a very interest-ing and entertaining LP "Mozart After Hours" with MaureenForrester doing her own type of scat singing with the Vien-nese Symphony people and Vienna Academy choir playingaround with Mozart ala-swing le singers under the watchfuleye of Gershon Kingsley. Also found very delightful is thenew Reprise series of albums devoted to shows "Guys andDolls" "Kiss Me Kate", "South Pacific" and "FiniansRainbow". "Great! Great! Great!"
A FEW ISSUES back we mentioned the single on Con-gress "The Gypsy" by Robert Davie. This single has beenbrought to our attention once again. If you haven't heard ityet or haven't received this Phonodisc release it would bewell worth the effort to latch on to it. Another single welldone is The Kingston Trio's newie on Decca "Hope YouUnderstand". For Burl Ives fans he's never had a better onethan "Chim Chim Cheree" on RCA. Two Capitol singlesworthy of note are the new Matt Monro "Walk Away" and AlMartino's "We Could". For LP's we find the "FantasticStrings" of Felix Slatkin (Liberty) pretty fantastic. If youlike Keely Smith you'll be interested in her new Reprise LP"Lennon, McCartney Songbook". For Mathis fans Johnnygoes Latin with "Ole" on Mercury. He does a bang up jobon "Granada" and "Babalu".

International ReportDATELINE NEW YORK by Harriet Wasser
Dick Contino was in New York long enough last week toinform us that he was opening at the Barclay Hotel in Torontoon November 9th. If you get a chance to catch his show, besure to tell him Harriet sent you.
Philips Records will release its own LP of songs madefamous by The 4 Seasons ....this one arranged by CharlieCalello. Talking about new albums, Sid Bass, who arrangedGale Garnett's smash "We'll Sing In The Sunshine", reportsthat he just finished recording Gale's second album for RCA.Canada certainly loves this gal.
Tin Pan Alley is talking about the $250,000 deal signedbetween independent record producer, Mickey Most, and CBSRecords. Deal covers records released in America andCanada. They are also talkirg about the near fatal accidentthat almost took the life of country singer, J. Frank ("LastWilson. We were immediately reminded of the recent trage-dies that took the lives of Jim Reeves and Johnny Burnett.
Waiting to break big on the charts is "The 81" by Candyand The Kisses. We first read about this record in RPM, butit is now starting to get action here. Also, what looks like abig record is "Since I Don't Have You" by Chuck Jackson.
Our question, "What ever happened to United Artistsplans to record The Four Lads" has been answered. Thecompany has just released an album by the boys called"Songs of World War I".
More and more femme vocalists from England are in-vading our charts. Newest among them is Marianne Faithfulwith her record of "As Tears Go By" On the cover of hernew LP entitled "Dusty", England's Dusty Springfield isbilled as "America's Newest Singing Star". WSM's 39th Grand Ole Opry Birthday party in Nashville,Tennessee (November 6 & 7) turned out to be a howling suc-cess with some 2,500 in attendance. From the Toronto area,C & W artistry was represented by such names as Chef Adams,Jimmy Simms, Reg and Eleanor Bartley (The Singing Sweet-hearts). Publishing and promotion personel consisted ofBMI Canada's Harold Moon; Columbia Records' Bob Pampeand Bob Martin; CFGM's Bill Stoneham Jr; Poppy Bucketand yours truly, Fred Roy and perhaps others which yourwriter didn't run into in the crowded city. Winnipeg artist(Columbia) Stu Phillips got a standing ovation for his per-formance at the Columbia Records luncheon at noon Saturday.
PERHAPS THE BRIGHTEST performer around wasC&W music's newest hit attraction (and I do mean Attrac-tion) Miss Connie Smith, whose RCA Victor discing of"Once A Day" currently tops the country charts. SeeingConnie both on and off stage at the Opry brings back memor-ies of Jean Shepard's early career. Blonde, 5'2" Connie isabout the same in size, appearance and vitality that C&Wcolumnists acredited to Jean Shepard soon after her debut, and she has enough talent to keep her in the spotlight forfor many years.
CFGM'S RON KITSON is proving a success as a C&Wsongwriter. His newest release is titled "Happy Birthday"which was just released on Decca by Loretta Lynn andand should be heading for the number one slot in a matterof weeks as Loretta's discs usually do. Loretta sang thesong on the Opry Saturday night (7) with vocal assistancefrom Connie Smith.
TEX RITTER was elected to CMA's Country Music Hallof Fame with a 24" x 30" bronze plaque bearing his like-ness added to those of Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams,Fred Rose and Roy Acuff who preceded him into the Hall ofFame in years passed. Announcement of the election wasmade by Frances Preston, CMA's Chairman of the Board, from the stage of Loew's Theatre, Nashville, preceding theshowing of MGM's "Your Cheatin' Heart", film version ofHank Williams' life.
