SAINTS OF LENT:
SAINT CRESCENTIA HOESS April 6 Born in Germany in 1682, St Crescentia was the daughter
of a poor weaver. She spent her play time praying in
church, assisting the poor and mastering
religious truths. She was then permitted
to make her first Holy Communion at the
age of 7! Because she was poor with no
dowry, the local convent rejected but
then reluctantly accepted her, consider-
ing her a burden and giving her only
menial tasks. Her cheerful and virtuous
spirit eventually changed all that and
she later became the convent's superior.
She was even asked for advice from
royalty, bishops and cardinals, yet she
remained forever humble.

Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings
The dichotomy that exists between the thinking of mankind and the Divine is, once again, the central focus of today’s reading. Throughout salvation history, the Divine Plan has always been to unite the Creator’s creation with Himself. In the process, mankind, with his free will and intellect, has constantly mis-interpreted the Divine Will and hubristically asserted the human perspective. In doing this, mankind has only increased the chasm that separates heaven and earth leaving the task of bridging this gulf up to the Divine. This “bridge” will be the Messiah. With the coming of the Messiah, proper perspective will be offered to those who wish to accept it.
In today’s first reading from the first Book of Samuel, God informs Samuel that the next king of Israel will come from the sons of Jesse of Bethlehem. Jesse presents seven sons for consideration. In ancient times, primary inheritance normally would fall to the eldest, the first born. The sons presented are the strongest and most experienced; however, God discloses that man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart. None of the sons are selected until Jesse sends for the youngest, David, who is tending the sheep. When David appears, he is the chosen one and is anointed king in the presence of his older brothers. With the Spirit of the Lord rushing upon him, God sets in line the fulfillment of His prophetic message and the coming of the Messiah.
The difference between the desires of men and that of God is reflected in the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians. Paul makes it clear that society’s ways are the ways of darkness or evil that are contrary to the Messianic message. These customs, promulgated by the Romans and the powers to be, encourage the self-centered and hedonistic practices of the times. This “darkness” is fruitless and brings about the absence of what is good and loving. The Apostle to the Gentiles reminds all that they, now, walk in the “Light”. This Light is the Light that gives life and is found only in Christ. Jesus is the light that will reveal the true hearts of all. This revelation will provide men with the ability to see the Divine perspective that calls for humility, selflessness and agape love.
In today’s lengthy Gospel by John, Jesus attests to the truth about sin and its consequences while, at the same time, affirming his Messianic role to those present. Simultaneously, Jesus finds himself confronting the Pharisees who steadfastly refuse to acknowledge his authority from God. The question about sin first occurs when Christ’s disciples encounter a man blind from birth. Thinking as men did, they ask Jesus if the man’s blindness originated from his sin or his parents. Christ answered that nobody sinned causing the blindness; rather, God allowed it in
order that His Divine healing power could be revealed. The remainder of the story centers around the ability of God through Christ to heal mankind and shed light in the darkness of the world. After establishing the Divine mandate, Jesus proceeds to heal the afflicted man on the Sabbath, in violation of the law, as the Lord proclaims himself to be “the light of the world”. With this proclamation comes an ominous prophecy that “darkness” is coming when no “work” can be done.
This healing miracle induces many people to conclude that the beggar is not the one who was born blind; rather, he is supposedly an imposter. Arguing and refusing to accept the miracle, the doubters take the beggar to the Pharisees for further questioning. It is deduced that Christ cannot be from God because the healing took place on the Sabbath; however, there is enough doubt that the Pharisees summon the beggar’s parents in hopes of garnering further evidence against Christ’s claim. Recognizing their predicament, the parents dodge the question and refer the Pharisees back to their son.
Again, questioning the beggar, the Pharisees hear the same response and refuse to believe. The beggar adds sage advice by reminding the authorities that God does not listen to sinners; therefore, Jesus’ miracle proves he is from God! This statement incites the revenge of the Pharisees who cast the man out of the Temple. This total rejection by the authorities catches the attention of Christ who unequivocally states that he is the Son of Man. With this affirmation, the beggar worships Jesus. The episode ends with Christ telling the Pharisees that because they claim to “see” their sins remain out of the stubbornness of their hearts. They are left in the “darkness” of the world.
This Sunday’s Liturgy of the Word is a stark reminder that, like the Pharisees, if we fail to acknowledge our “blindness” and seek the “Light” our sins will remain. It is only through our own willful stubbornness that God’s mercy and healing powers cannot reach us. Like the beggar, we are born in “darkness” and need to seek the Messiah for healing. It is only by recognizing the Lord as the Divine Agent who heals that the Light of Christ can overpower the darkness of sin and the world. Using this penitential season, Christ offers God’s mercy and healing to those to whom the Lord was sent. We either follow the Lord and reap His rewards or we remain as “Pharisees” entrenched in our self-centered world.
