acknowledge death and dying as everyone’s business.

We encourage poster submissions related to various aspects of palliative care - clinical practice,

NOKIIWIN TRIBAL COUNCIL DISABILITIES INITIATIVE COORDINATOR

Term contract to March 31, 2015

Summary of Position: The Nokiiwin Tribal Council is a not for profit organization that provides advisory services to member First Nation communities within the Robinson Superior Treaty area. The Nokiiwin Tribal Council requires an experienced, knowledgeable, and motivated Coordinator under the Disabilities Initiative funded by AANDC. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Coordinator will work closely with the Education Personnel. The Disabilities Initiative will provide much needed support for community members living on reserve that suffer from various forms of disabilities. Health Canada reports that “nearly one-quarter of First Nation adults living on-reserve reported having at least one disability.” In addition to this, Health Canada specifically affirms that “the numbers of First Nation individuals with disabilities increase with age.” As a result, 50% of elders (age 60+) in First Nation communities report having a disability. This project was created to meet specific needs as directed. Individuals with disabilities face greater challenges accessing social, educational, economic and other realms of society relative to those without disabilities. By stimulating inclusion, education about disabilities, and diversity efforts, this project aims to support children, youth, adults and elders residing in First Nation communities with issues related to disabilities. Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A university degree or college diploma in a related field with a minimum of three (3) years

of related work experience. 2. Must have experience working with First Nation organizations, First Nation Government,

First Nation communities and other levels of government. A keen appreciation of the Nokiiwin Tribal Council member First Nation cultures and community aspirations is required.

3. Must have proven well-developed communication, staff/public relations and negotiating experience; must be highly self-motivated and able to work well independently or as a team member.

4. Must have excellent computer skills, proven experience with word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and publishing software preferably in a Microsoft Office Suite environment.

6. Demonstrated experience and ability in policy, planning and program development and implementation.

7. Must have valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation. 8. For new employees only: Criminal Reference check as relevant to the position is required.

For a copy of the job description please go to www.nokiiwin.com.

Interested candidates must submit their resume along with a cover letter and three (3) employer references by August 313, 2015 by 4:00 p.m.

Request for Tenders Anemki Mino Ziizibaakwad is currently seeking tenders for the construction of a sugar shack in the FWFN sugar bush. The sugar bush operation is a community-based project, focused on providing educational and cultural opportunities for those who belong with FWFN. As such, we seek tenders from construction professionals willing to lead a team of volunteers, with the purpose of teaching construction skills to those interested. Since our budget is limited, we can hire only a single person to lead this construction project. In your tender request, please clearly describe how you would lead a team of volunteers in this project. We expect the site to require a cement foundation, and for the shack structure to be conducive to boiling maple syrup. Please include a list of cost quotes for these elements. A date will be set for a site visit if interested. Tenders should be submitted to Ryan Saarinen ([email protected]) by September 1st, 2015

Scabies What is scabies? Scabies is a common skin condition caused by tiny insects called mites. Scabies can be unpleasant but they do not cause disease. Having scabies doesn’t mean you are not clean. What are the symptoms? The mites that cause scabies dig deep into the skin and lay eggs. This leads to a rash that has small, red, raised spots. Itchiness is usually worse at night. The rash usually appears between the fingers, in the groin area, between toes or around the wrists or elbows, but can be found anywhere on the body. In infants and young children the rash can appear on the head, face, neck, chest, abdomen, and back as white, curvy, thread-like lines, tiny red bumps or scratch marks. How does it spread? Scabies spreads by close contact with someone’s skin, such as when people share a bed and commonly spreads within the household. Short contact, like shaking hands or a hug, usually will not spread scabies. It is occasionally spread from someone’s clothes or personal items like bedding or clothing. The scabies can live off skin for up to 3 days. Animals do not spread human scabies. Mites that are on clothing die when you wash them in hot water and dry them in a hot dryer. How is it treated?

• Scabies is treated with a cream or lotion that is prescribed by your doctor. It is usually kept on the skin for several hours. You may need to do 2 treatments, 1 week apart.

• Your child may still be itchy for a few weeks, even if the scabies have all died. • Everyone who lives in your home will need to be treated at the same time because a family member can have

scabies but not the symptoms yet. What can parents do?

• Call your doctor if you think your child has scabies. • If your child has scabies, wash all bed linen, towels and clothes in hot water and dry in a dryer at the hottest

setting. • Store things that can’t be washed in an airtight plastic bag for 1 week to kill the scabies. • Your child can return to child care or school once you have applied the first treatment.

St. Anne's - 21st Sunday - Aug 23rd, 2015 1st Reading: Joshua 24:1-2, 15-18. Joshua tells the people that now that they have arrived in the Promised Land they have a vital decision to make - to serve the one true God or to serve idols. 2nd Reading: Ephesians 5:21-32. St. Paul uses the image of a marriage relationship to express the bond of love that exists between Christ and the Church. Gospel John 6:60-69. Many of Jesus' disciples leave him because they cannot accept his teaching. Jesus then confronts his apostles with the same choice: "Will you also leave me?" Gospel Challenge: Choosing Christ. Our consideration of Jesus' teaching about the bread of life. The people at the time of Joshua had to decide which god they would worship. This decision would determine their identity. They would be known as the people of whichever god they would choose, and they would be bound to the norms and practices set down by that god. "Decide today whom you will serve." The disciples of Jesus had to make a similar decision. Was he the one who would fulfill their messianic expectations? And if not him, "To whom shall we go? Will we choose Jesus, despite the incredible claims he makes? Or will we decide to stay where we are, satisfied with the lives we are living? Choosing Jesus will bring us deeper and deeper into the mystery of the Eucharist. Are we willing to go there?
