“Moses: Lifelong Journey of Faith” Week 8: Last Will & Testament

August 9, 2020 We have come to the final week of our summer message series, “Moses: Lifelong Journey of Faith.” From being a baby that should have been

killed when he was born, or at best raised a slave, Moses was raised in the house of the Pharaoh as a prince. Then he set out on his own, settling into a good, routine life with a wife and child, only to be called by God for a great mission. First there were the confrontations with Pharaoh, who eventually allowed the Israelites to leave. After their miraculous escape, despite their whining, Moses brings the Israelites to Mt. Sinai where they enter into a covenant with God; a covenant that the Israelites soon broke. Due to the Israelites’ distrust of God, they are forced to wander for 40 years in the desert before being able to enter into the Promise Land. Moses leads them every step of the way, following God’s will for them. Then last week, we saw that as they were coming to the end of their journey, the Israelites grumbling causes Moses to strike out in anger towards them, and he disobeys God. For that, Moses will not be allowed to lead the people into the Promise Land. This week we encounter Moses as he is putting is final affairs in order. We will be looking at passages from the Book of Deuteronomy, which is basically one long goodbye sermon by Moses. God leads Moses up another mountain. Moses asks if he could lead the people into the Promise Land, but God says “No.” Moses does not argue, he accepts God’s judgment. God does give Moses a vision of the Promise Land, something to satisfy something of the longing that has kept Moses going all these years. And again, Moses is grateful. Moses has another important lesson to teach us, something that all good leaders need to do – prepare, bless, and empower the next generation of leaders. Like all the greatest leaders, Moses served his generation, while at the same time, investing in the next. If you have been reading the Books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy as we being going through this message series, besides Aaron, his brother, one other names comes up time and time again – Joshua. Joshua is described as having been Moses aide since he was a young man. Moses mentored Joshua, and now, God tells Moses that it is time for Joshua to take charge. What we want you to know this week: God prepares his people for a greater mission. The mission God has for you is based upon your history. What we want you to do this week: What is the Promised Land that is driving your life?

HOW PARENTS CAN TEACH KIDS THE FAITH

I know of a married couple (for the sake of privacy I will make up their name). The husband, Jack, had real difficulty in describing his emotions. He felt his emotions strongly, but he couldn’t verbalize how he was feeling. He could have been experiencing a really bad day or a slightly annoying day, but he didn’t have the language to distinguish the different grades of distinction between his different states. He realizes that he needs to develop that language.

There may be a similar verbal development that needs to take place with our kids and their faith. Kids don’t necessarily have the language to be able to verbalize spiritual experiences. So, when you start talking about how you feel during prayer and what you experience they don’t have the language to connect to that experience yet or they don’t understand what’s going on inside of them and they need to develop that interiority.

Kids can be taught that there is a difference between talking to the air and thinking/daydreaming when in prayer vs. being in a conversation with God or in His presence. It’s like being in a conversation with a friend while you ride in a car. You don’t even need to say anything to enjoy being with this friend. It is the same with God. If kids are in His presence and not speaking, then that is a form of prayer. But, just like they enjoy being in the car with a friend, they need to realize consciously that they are in the presence of God.

A key is to look for opportunities to teach the faith from a very practical standpoint. They will study theology in class. You don’t need to be an expert on your faith in order to teach it to your kids. For example, God is a relationship of persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We were made in His image, so we were made to be in relationships with other people. We bond with others during meals, dances, music and other social activities. Doing wholesome family friendly activities and gatherings are a great way for kids to experience the life of the Trinity, although to a much lesser extent.

Another way to teach the faith is to do family service projects or volunteer time. When your kids see the face of a homeless person who you just gave food to they will remember that moment more than any classroom session. It is much easier to make fun of or be sarcastic to someone on social media, when you cannot see their face. But, getting out on the streets and seeing people and the hardships that some endure can be a great opportunity for kids to experience God.

The ideal Catholic doesn’t spend the majority of their day at Church. They come to Church often. But they have a rich family life and rich friendships. And, they go out beyond the doors of the Church. So, parents can think of how to form kids that way. How can we go out beyond the doors of the Church to strengthen fellowship with others and serve others.

Word (reading the Bible together or praying together as a family), Worship (going to Mass, visiting a Church to say a quick prayer even if it is for 30 seconds), Fellowship (strengthening relationships with others) and Service (Volunteer opportunities or finding ways to serve others especially those less fortunate then ourselves) are the 4 keys for parents to teach kids the faith.

MOSES Week 8 Last Will & Testament As we come to the end of this message series, we will look at the Book of Deuteronomy. Basically it is a long sermon given by Moses as the Israelites are just about to cross the Jordan River and enter the Promise Land. For 40 years Moses lead the Israelites. He put up with all their grumbling and griping. It was the vision, the promise of this land that kept Moses going all this time. As a great leader, Moses served his generation, and he invested in the next by preparing Joshua to succeed him. What we want you to know this week: God prepares his people for a greater mission. The mission God has for you is based upon your history. What we want you to do this week: What is the Promised Land that is driving your life?
