Transcript of Week 8 18 22 Class
Week 8 18th – 22nd May 2nd Class
Hello parents & pupils,
The weeks are flying by. It is hard to believe we are into our tenth
week of being at home. I hope you and your family are well. It has been lovely receiving the
children’s work on Seesaw. I hope they too are enjoying submitting their work and getting
feedback and encouragement.
For this week I am asking again for one or two items per day on Seesaw (Monday –
Thursday) which may be written or audio. Could I also ask please not to show the children’s
faces in any photos or videos.
We are delighted to hear that the First Holy Communion has been rescheduled for
Saturday the 25th of July. It will be lovely for the children to look forward to and plan
towards, even if it will be different to how we had imagined the day. I’m sure we will get
more details over the coming weeks about the day and I will share these with you as soon
as I know more. For now I will add some preparation work into this worksheet. If you have
any question about the day please email me and I will try to help.
Like previous weeks, this homework sheet is a guide for work to be covered and there is no
pressure to follow it exactly or cover everything.
Have a lovely week,
Ms.Lee

Work It Out Week 28 Wednesday
Brainteasers Test 54
Busy At Maths pg. 136
We will be slowly starting to learn how to subtract with renaming (what a lot of us
know as borrowing). For today the children can just practice renaming tens and
units and don’t need to think about any subtraction yet. The example box on page
136 explains it well.
E.g. 34 = 3 tens and 4 units or 2 tens and 14 units
15 = 1 ten and 5 units or 0 tens and 15 units
I have a sheet explaining subtraction with renaming step by step which I will put in
below and also a poem to help the children recognise when the need to use
renaming.
Please do not worry about this, we will work very slowly through this new method
over the coming weeks.

Subtraction with renaming explained
This methodology is required for example when you are doing a sum like:
Example :
T U
3 3
- 1____ 9
The student starts ‘taking away’ the units and realises that they can’t take 9 from 3 – e.g. If I have 3
sweets in the jar, I can’t take 9 out.
Identifying when a sum will need ‘renaming’ is a skill in itself and one which we will be working on.
Confusion can arise because most of us have learned how to do this kind of subtraction using the
‘borrow and pay back’ method.
Method:
T U
2 13
3 3
- 1 9
1 4
• 3 take away 9, you cannot do.
• Take a ten from the tens house and rename the tens from 3 to 2.
• Give the ten to the units house. The units are not called 3 anymore, they are 13.
• Now we have 13 units in the units house. 13 take away 9 we can do.
• Units: 13 take away 9 equals 4.
• Tens: 2 take away 1 equals 1.
• Answer equals 14.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if this is causing any confusion by either emailing
[email protected] and putting my name in the subject bar, or on Seesaw.
Thanks, Ms.Lee.
