HUNTER CREATIVE ARTS CAMP Congratulations and good luck to Charli and Phoebe who are this week attending the Hunter Creative Arts Camp at Myuna Bay. The Hunter Creative Arts Camp is aimed at students in Years 5 and 6 with a passion for, and exceptional abilities in music, art, dance or drama. This week-long intensive camp provides students with access to industry professionals in their area of expertise. Students are exposed to the secondary syllabus in their specialised area each day to extend their skills, knowledge and understanding. The girls will be extended in a creative environment with specialist staff and will gain an understanding of all art forms. During the week they will work towards an end of camp performance for parents. We look forward to hearing all about this exciting adventure when the girls return to school next week.

PUBLIC SPEAKING Congratulations to the students who competed at the Interschools Zone Public Speaking competition last Thursday. The quality and high standard of speeches was very impressive with adjudicators having a difficult task in selecting a runner up and winner for each stage group. All students from Denman Public School spoke in an outstanding manner. Fynn was the runner up in the Early Stage One section with his interesting speech on the ‘Colossal Squid’.

YEAR 3 CLASS NEWS Wow, what an incredibly busy term we have had so far! All students were thoroughly engaged during both the Naidoc Science Show and the Naidoc Day celebrations early in the term. It was fantastic to see the enjoyment of students who performed with the Aboriginal Dance Group. Students demonstrated their growing skills in performing during the Hunter Dance Festival. Continuing our focus on being active, all students are enjoying the Jump Rope for Heart skills sessions. Many Year 3 students have also participated in representative sport and are enjoying the Gym Matrix program on Fridays. Education Week was a great success with Years 3 and 4 performing their Eisteddfod songs. We were thrilled to have such an incredible number of families visit our classrooms. Congratulations to our Public Speaking and Spelling Bee finalists, we wish you well at the next level of competition. Year 3 displayed great participation in Dress as a Farmer Day and the Book Week Parade. The Wildlife Rescue visit was the last of our engaging and enjoyable learning experiences. We’ve had a great term so far and can’t wait to see what the remainder of the term will have in store for us.

Check Mate! Denman Public School win Upper Hunter Schools Team Chess Tournament by the DPS Journalism Team

On Monday August 20th, three students travelled to Singleton to compete against fifteen teams in the annual Upper Hunter Schools Team Chess Tournament. Vinnie, Ella and Patrick made all the right moves to dominate the tournament from start to finish. The team won 19 of 21 games to finish in first place and earn a spot in the State Finals in Sydney in November. Ella described the victory and opportunity to represent Denman in Sydney as amazing. “It will be a much greater challenge in Sydney and I look forward to testing my skill against the best,” she said. A big thank you to Milisa Borg for transporting the chess team to Singleton on the day and also to Mr Allan Sommerville for coaching the team. LIBRARY NEWS Tomorrow, author and illustrator Michael Salmon will be visiting our school. All students have been reading books by Michael Salmon in library lessons and we look forward to learning about where his writing ideas come from and how he creates such fantastic characters and illustrations. Families and younger siblings are welcome to attend (10am - 11am in

the school hall). There will be the opportunity to purchase some of his books and a selection of stationary at the end of the session ($5-$20). Students will have an opportunity to have their purchases personally signed by Mr Salmon.

SPORTS REPORT Gym Matrix Students from K-6 are absolutely loving the Gym Matrix sessions for Friday sport. They have been perfecting their coordination, flexibility and core strength in the sessions, using a range of quality gymnastics equipment and guidance from our gymnastics coach, Jen Kendell. Jump Rope for Heart Jump Rope for Heart is a great way for your child to keep fit and learn new skills, but it also helps raise funds for vital heart research and education programs. Remember to register your child online, so they can receive the full benefits of the program and participate in online fundraising. Kirkland Cup Last Tuesday 28th August, Mrs Ballard and Mrs Jones accompanied 29 students to the annual Bryan Kirkland Cup Rugby League Carnival in Singleton. It was a fantastic day with excellent behaviour and sportsmanship from our DPS footballers. The Under 10’s team had very little experience in this division but this didn’t curb their enthusiasm and determination. They worked together as a team and showed great improvement with every game. They came away with 2 defeats, 1 draw and 1 win, a fantastic result given the age of our young team! Well done Jonathan, Ava, Dawson, Luke, Keedan, Eddy, Ned, Dillon, Bailey, Brodie, Seth, Jade, Theo, Blaney and Daniel. The Open’s team were very determined to do their best throughout the carnival. They combined well in attack and defence to win their first 3 games, without having a single try scored against them. They were defeated 2-0 in their final match, finishing second in their pool against strong opposition. This is a fantastic achievement. Congratulations Cooper, Rylan, Lucas, Darcy, Jo, Ashton, Patrick, Ella, Harry, Heath, Freddy, Conner and Zaiden. Thank you to families who supported us on the day and to Phil Hamlin and Lindsay Duggan for coaching the teams.
