PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE This week I have been in contact with the Education Review Office about when we can make the ERO report public. At this stage they are still processing the unconfirmed report but hope to have it confirmed within the next few days. - Watch this space. Yesterday Mr. Smith and I attended the second in a series of three professional development sessions entitled ‘Quality Leadership in Mathematics’. The day was invaluable as we covered many topics, including the recent changes to some key resources, updates involving the National Standards as well as networking with other curriculum leaders from across the Coast. One resource that might be of interest to parents is the families section on the New Zealand Maths website. This site provides easy to follow activities that parents can work on with their children. These activities are levelled and relate directly to the curriculum that is taught at school. The site is well worth a look. http://nzmaths.co.nz/activities-support-your-child As for the rest of this newsletter I will let the students and the staff fill you in about what has been going on over the past two weeks. Bradley Roberts FROM THE PRIMARY TEAM ROOM 2 GAME MAKING Year 3 and 4 students have been busy making games during Term 3. We were making the games because we were learning to write instructions. It was hard to think up the ideas for the games so we worked with a partner. It was also hard to think up all the instructions you need to play the game and to get them in the right order to make sense. We made fantastic boxes to put our games in, you can see our cool photos on the lids of the boxes. All the games have a target board and we made all sorts of games like doubling and maths skills games, blindfold target games, aiming games and money games. We love our fantabulous games, we think they are fun to play. It was great fun making them. Our games rock, if you want to see them come to Room 2. Lunches - reminder In years 1 - 8, children sit down for the first ten minutes of lunchtime to ensure they eat lunch, supervised, before going to play. It would help us maintain this routine if children have food that is ready to be eaten. Children wanting to go to the staffroom to get noodles heated, spoons, or fruit cut up means that much of the ten minutes is gone before they sit down to eat. At this time of the day there are often no staff in the staffroom anyway and duty teachers can't prepare food for children. Noodles can be sent hot in a flask, fruit can be cut up before school and a spoon put in if one is needed. That way children can establish healthy eating habits and enjoy the social side of eating lunch together before playing. FROM THE SECONDARY TEAM Fundraising lunches- It appears as if the school community has spoken with their stomaches by not supporting the healthy lunches that have been on offer this term. A great deal of effort and time was put into creating nutritious options such as cannelloni, macaroni cheese and minestrone soup- all with fruit and juice. Unfortunately these dishes were not well received and the funds raised were barely enough to cover costs. With this in mind the remaining fundraising lunches will include some treat items such American style hotdogs and sausage sizzles. September 15th 2011 Week 7- Term 3 2011.

First Aid CourseAll of the year 11 students have been attending a 2 dayfirst aid course this week. Mandy Steele from NZ RedCross has been at the school for the last 2 days andhas helped the students gain a certificate incomprehensive first aid and add 4 credits to their NCEAlevel 1 qualifications. This has been a useful andinformative time for the students (and Jamie Fowlerwho has been updating his current qualification) andsome very interesting scenarios have been played out.It is reassuring to k now that there are now 11 morepeople in our community who have the ability toadminister first aid should the need arise.

The Ski Trip of the year!Well it’s the only one this year but it was by far the mostexcellent trip! Wednesday dawned sunny and full ofexpectation as Room 4 prepared for its adventure onthe Piste. The looming bus ride was daunting for someand Cathy opted for a car ride instead of being sick infront of all the kids! As it turned out getting to Westportand then Greymouth was pretty uneventful. After lunchwe stopped at Arthur’s Pass for a wee…(bag of chips)and onto Porter Heights!

We settled into the Lodge and within about 30 minutesmost kids were outside building snowmen and igloos. The adults preferred the hot fire and coffee. Dinner anddessert were great and it was off to bed withanticipation in our heads of a great day ahead of us onthe slopes.

Thursday was absolutely stunning weather wise. Not acloud to be seen and beautiful snow all around, it wasperfect. We kitted up and spent the first few hourslearning how to ski and snowboard. Although Abby andBrooke spent most their time on their faces orbacksides they and the rest of us got the hang of itpretty quickly. After lunch and lessons the adventurousmade their way to the intermediate slope while somestayed on the beginners to hone their skills. Getting thehang of the tow was a job in itself but after manyattempts it was great to see Karamea kids swishingdown the slopes as if they had being doing it all theirlives.

Tane was like a fish to water (or is it a polar bear tosnow??) and Polly and Jason were naturals, alreadyhaving some experience. It took Brooke, Annalese,Rosie, Timothy and Abby a little longer but they all got

the hang of it. Kurt was making great progress on thesnowboard with assistance from his mum and althoughhe spent a lot of time on his backside he never gaveup! Jessie, Abby R, Jerri and Britney were trying theirbest and were looking to Friday as their day to go to thehigher slopes.

A bunch of tired ski bunnies were pretty early to bed onThursday night full of confidence that Friday was goingto be awesome. They were right! It snowed onThursday night leaving lots of fantastic fresh powderbehind and skiing on it was just amazing. Annalese,Rosie and Abby all tried the T-Bar with mixed results.Jerri, Jessie and Britney all braved the intermediateslopes at least once and overall I think they all had afantastic time and learnt so much about themselves asmuch as they did about skiing. Thank you so much toour amazingly supportive parents; Cathy, Chris, Taniaand Marg for everything you did for us on camp. A bigthank-you has to go Dave for driving us there and backand being such great company too.

One last thankyou has to go to Pub Charity and thefantastic Karamea community who helped get our kidson the slopes. Without your support with fundraising wemay never have got there. It was a trip to remember.Thankyou.
