Textural Slab Form—Dominic Year 9

I have been working with the majority of our feeder Primary Schools with the

focus on bridging the gap between Primary School and High School, not only at

a social and emotional level but also on a academic level. We are looking at

adopting literacy strategies and assessment procedures that will further support

our student’s transition to High School. The creation of a strong community of schools working together is a very positive aspect, which will significantly bene-

fit our students.

Tuesday Assembly was a great time to recognise a huge number of our wonderful students. Ms Oppy, as our

VIVO co-ordinator does a fantastic job handing out both High Flyer’s awards to students and acknowledging

the staff who are excelling at distributing VIVO positive reward points.

This week’s High Flyers were Jett and Jacinta. Congratulations girls- keep up the great work.

Congratulations also goes to Ms West who was our Teacher Iced Vovo’s for VIVO’s winner.

Ms Tait, dressed up as Mrs Trunchbull, encouraged students to start organising their outfits for Friday 24th August

Book Week “Dress up as a Character” Day. She also congratulated eight students for their involvement in ‘Write a

Book in a Day’ last Friday. These amazing and talented students wrote a 5000 word story, created a beautiful front

cover and illustrations for their story which they wrote between 8am and 8pm. An excellent effort and a fundraiser to

support childhood cancer research.

A fantastic group of students in years 7-10 have been logging their books in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. It’s

great to see so many of our students loving books and reading avidly. Well done!

Year Advisor awards were given to Gemma (Year 7) and Blain (Year8)

Mr Smith places a literacy focus on each Tuesday assembly sharing a word and its meaning that has a posi-

tive impact on students. Tenacity, Grit, and Perserverance are just a few of the words discussed.

Windsor High School raised $380 for relief for farmers with the “Wear a Bow for a Farmer” campaign! Well

done Lakita, Kendall, Gemma and Isabella for their great idea and organisation!

Teachers at Windsor High School ensure learning is engaging and definitely not boring, Rather than just tell-ing students information that become emmersed in the knowledge. An example of this is the Year 11 Ancient History took part in a debate. The topic was Weapons and Armour (Rome vs Carthage). The Carthaginian debaters came out on top in a tight debate, 3-2. Well done to the Carthaginian debaters: Annabelle, Jacob and Colin and the Roman debaters: Ameysha, Mikhaela, Jayden and Aden. Well done also to our HSIE

teachers who go to a lot of effort to make there lessons meaningful.

Miss Talidu’s ‘Artist of the week’ goes to two equally deserving Year 10 photography students. Kima created a magazine cover and Shayleah made a movie poster, involving digital manipulation in Photoshop. Both girls

displayed strong design skills. Well done!

To encourage reading and exposure to various forms of literature, some of our avid readers attended the CBCA Book of the Year announcement ceremony. They had a great time, met some of their favorite authors

and had their books signed.

The most exciting news for the week was the announcement that our students had won a most prestigious competition, sort after by many schools, the majority much larger in student numbers than Windsor High.

Mr Cotter and the Year 11 Business Studies Class have been working on an entrepreneurial project hosted by the Foundation for Young Australians. Two groups from Mr Cotter's class submitted plans for environmen-tally conscious businesses and were accepted into the next phase of the project. They received $1000 for each group as a seeding grant for their projects. They refined their plans and entered the final stage of the project. They competed with schools across the region for an additional prize of $ 5000. And won! First and second prizes! The first prize includes a trip to Melbourne to present their ideas! Well done Mr Cotter and stu-

dents!

Congratulations to Mrs West’s student of the week, Declan who completed some great homework !

We have a group of students who are getting very excited about their upcoming trip to America to attend

Space Camp. There was a combined Windsor and Hawkesbury High trivia night last Saturday night to raise

money for our students and staff to attend. Mr Philp retained his title of paper airplane champion and the

Windsor High Science teachers (past and present) and friends took out the overall prize for the trivia. Well

done.

Reminder of our P&C Meeting ton Tuesday 28th August at 6.30pm in Support Unit.

We are excited to hear about year 7 camp upon their return this week. Camps are an important experience for

our students and they all will be left with memories that will last a life time.

PDHPE Newsletter Term 3 2018 Assessment Students in years 7 – 10 will be completing their Term 3 Assessments in the upcoming weeks. Assessments provide students with the opportunity to put into practise their new found knowledge. Students are assessed in both theoretical and practical components of PDHPE so it is extremely important that they participate in all as-pects of the subject. As well as assessing student progress, assessment results are used by teachers in the evaluation of teaching programs and practises to ensure we provide relevant and engaging programs for the students at Windsor High School. The feeling of achievement and accomplishment a student feels when they complete a task not only helps to improve their overall grades but it can have very positive effects on their emotional health and wellbe-ing. With this in mind I ask that parents and carers please encourage their children to complete all assigned tasks to the best of their ability.

Term 3 Assessment Tasks – specific due dates to be advised by class teacher.

Premiers Sporting Challenge

Premiers sporting challenge continues in term 3. The challenge is a 10 week program where each class can

accumulate time spent in a broad range of sports and recreational pursuits during lunchtime, in school sport

programs, class time, after school or in weekend physical activity. Students collate the time they spend on phys-

ical activity each week on tracking cards.

New Curriculum The PDHPE faculty have attended professional learning to aid in the implementation of the

new PDHPE curriculum which was released in April and is to be implemented for years 7 and 9 in 2019 (years 8

– 10 implemented in 2020). As a faculty we are excited by what this new curriculum offers and are currently

planning and developing new learning programs. The new syllabus encourages students to apply a strengths

based approach towards their health and physical education studies using validated evidence to guide their

learning.

SRC NEWS

As a White Ribbon Ambassador, our school and members of the Student Representative Council will be promot-ing the idea of respectful relationships in school. The message we aim to share with the support of the student body and the wider community is that Windsor High School is saying “NO” to violence and violence against wom-en. Members of the SRC will be assisting in the running of the White Ribbon Cup and will be also conducting an ice-cream stall for participants and viewers. In response to a popular poll conducted on our Facebook page, the SRC is working towards conducting a 70s and 80s themed Mufti Day this term. We would be looking to hold it at the end of Term 3. So for one day, trends in-cluding ripped tights, leather accessories through to polished oversized blazers will be back in fashion at Windsor High School. To participate in this event, students will require a gold coin donation. The money raised will go to-wards purchasing an outdoor picnic tables for the Senior Quad.

It is also planned that members of the SRC will be involved in the selling of Legacy Day badges in the local Wind-

sor community. Legacy Week is the annual national appeal to raise awareness and funds for the families of our

incapacitated and deceased Veterans.

It is held in towns and cities big and small across Australia and supported by young and old.

The funds raised from Legacy Week will help Legacy continue to assist approximately 60,000 beneficiaries, with

96% of them being elderly widows throughout Australia, with essential services such as, counselling, special

housing, medical, advocacy and social support.
