Week 4 of Guided Home Learning
Form Time
Tobi in 8R created some incredible images using the Google arts and culture app for her form
time activity. She was crowned form challenge winner!
Academic Scholars
Some lovely examples of entries to this week’s Academic
Scholars’ challenge. The challenge was to create a
response to a chapter from Philip Pullman’s The Book o f
Dust! A big thank you to Mrs. Webb for her fantastic A Chapter
a Day ‘Webbanory’ sessions, which served as the
inspiration!
This week’s challenge is one of problem solving!
Coronavirus pandemic: how and when would you get the
country up and running again? For more information,
please do join our Academic Scholars’ ‘Classroom’ if you
haven’t already. All pupils very welcome!
Art Department
Year 8 have been responding to land art and creating their own: gathering materials, working
with nature, and documenting their work with great photos.

For their 1-hour art exam, Year 9 were asked to draw their hands. The variety of responses was
impressive and the pieces were lovely!
English Department
Ms Howie (a Croydon High alumna!) had a poetry tea party with Milla in
Year 13, as it was their final lesson ! They both wore their old Croydon
High uniforms.
Religious Studies Department
Year 8 are studying Sikhism. One Sikh belief is that they should perform
Sewa. This means ‘selfless service’ and it involves acting selflessly and
helping others in a variety of ways, without any reward or personal gain. It
is a way of life for many Sikhs and part of their daily routine. Sikhs
perform Sewa in a variety of ways, such as helping the local community.
Many Sikhs perform much of their Sewa by helping at the Gurdwara (their
temple), including cleaning, washing dishes or serving in the langar (a vegetarian meal that is
shared with anyone who wants to come to the Gurdwara).
Last week, Mrs Gower set 8L the task of performing their
own version of Sewa and asked them to upload videos in
response. Obviously, they did all this while still observing
social distancing advice! The videos are great and some
made Mrs Gower quite emotional as they had really taken
the idea on board. Their homework bought much joy to lots
of family and neighbours.
Isla gave biscuits to her two elderly neighbours, Margaret and Sylvia. It was Margaret’s
birthday! The next day, Isla received two phone calls from the women. They thanked Isla and
told her how much they liked the biscuits. The phone calls were really heart-warming and made
both Isla and her mum smile.
French Department
Year 8 were asked to create a revision poster on the theory of passé composé (a rather complex
tense they have been working on for the past six weeks). The rules were: no screen to help, just

notes and books, and to have fun! They have responded very well to the task and created some
great posters.
Year 9 (9F) also enjoyed a fantastic French lesson: Mrs Paris read pupils The Wonky Donkey and
shared the photos with them on PowerPoint. They were then tasked with putting the adjectives
in order and the story in order – they did this collaboratively and really enjoyed themselves!
Geography Department
The Upper Sixth Geography pupils have been leading a number of research seminars in
geography. They have finished the course and are truly showing Mrs Corner how they ‘own’
their learning!
Maya investigated and presented on the geopolitics of space exploration. It was absolutely
fascinating, touching on topics of cultural attitudes towards space exploration, mineral rights
and mining, geo conflict and how space exploration can improve the social and economic
development of countries.
Maya has written up her PowerPoint as a discussion essay, which you can read here. Her initial
discussion led the class to research the subject further and they will have a whole-class debate in
their next lesson.
