PRINCIPAL’S REPORT A message from Mrs Moss

As Term 1 comes to a close I would like to thank you for the endless support you have given me over the past year in my role as Relieving Principal. I have really enjoyed this role and I feel very privileged to be part of such a caring and welcoming school environment. Thank you for supporting the many initiatives that the school has been involved in over this time. Your feedback and positive involvement in all aspects of our school is very much appreciated. Our new principal Ms Victoria Pantelis will commence next term and we are all looking forward to welcoming her to our school. The past three weeks have been action packed. You would think that as the term comes to an end we should be slowing down but this has not been the case. Burraneer Bay students have continued to be involved in a wide range of activities. The Creative Arts Camp was a huge success. 95 students attended the camp and the teachers all remarked on the positive behaviours shown by the students. The changes that have been made to Band in 2017 have had a huge impact and this has been reflected in the feedback we have received from the parents who attended the concert at the end of the camp. We were very fortunate to have Mr Babicci also attend the camp. He has been employed at our school as a casual teacher this year and has a background in Music. His love of teaching and enthusiasm for Music was well received by both the students and staff.

Harmony Day celebrations were again very successful. The students wore orange and enjoyed the activities in the classrooms. Thank you to the canteen for giving all of the students a piece of orange. Make sure you have a look at the class displays and artworks in the hall when you are at the school. Year 6 and Kindergarten had so much fun making Friendship bracelets.

Raw Art lessons have been a real hit again this term. It is such a wonderful program. The knowledge and skills of the teachers and the wide range of activities are amazing. Lots of classes like to choose the clay activities. Year 6 made clay Dream Catchers and they look wonderful. Even students who struggle with art enjoy the lessons and come away feeling good about themselves.

Year 3 went on an excursion to the Sydney Aquarium and Wildlife Park. It was fantastic. They loved every minute of it and staff and students were all very positive. The behaviour of the Year 3 students was amazing. They were so interested in everything they saw, they would have stayed overnight if you let them. According to Year 3, the only negative was that the “ boat was closed in the penguin enclosure”.

Year 6 have really enjoyed their science lessons at Endeavour High School. It has made a huge difference to the students’ confidence and they are enjoying the time spent in the Science laboratories. We will continue this initiative next term. We have 4 visits organised next term, however we are dividing the grade into two smaller groups of 47 so that they all get to experience more hands on activities. 95 students in two Science Labs is a tad difficult. Last week’s Cross Country Carnival was successful. The weather had not been kind to us in the lead up to the carnival. Wednesday proved to be very hot and steamy and the children were challenged not only by the length of the race but also by the heat. The First Aid Station was extremely busy all day. I would like to thank Mr Tindall for organising the carnival and the Mr Fisher, Mr Sheen and Mr Crowhurst who went to Bonna Reserve very early on the morning of the Cross Country to set up. All Year 2 students were included in the carnival this year. They loved it.

There was an incident at the Cross Country that raised concerns. A number of parents decided to bring their dogs with them to the Cross Country and one of the students was bitten. Dogs are not allowed on school premises and the same rule applies at school events. Student Safety is extremely important to us.

30 Students from Stages 1-3 were selected to participate in Operation Art. Operation Art is an initiative that targets talented students in Visual Arts. The Stage 1 students participated in their workshops on Tuesday; Stage 2 went on Wednesday and Stage 3 on Thursday. Some of the Artworks produced by the students will be showcased at the Operation Art Exhibition for 2017. This is such a great initiative. Thank you parents for your positive feedback.

Year 4 Excursion to Wattamolla On Wednesday the 8th March, Year 4 went to Wattamolla for an excursion. We learnt about the history of the park and did some activities. We fished, made nature maps and searched for bugs. We also went on an exciting bushwalk which ended at a great viewpoint. I think one of the highlights was the fishing. It was one of the best excursions ever! Lulu 4N When we arrived at the National Park, the guides talked to us about how to treat the park and who worked there. In our first activity the guide told us to dig up some bugs. I found 3 earthworms, a witchetty grub and some millipedes. In our second activity we were told how to map and we played a game that involved mapping. Then we went dip fishing, where you have a little strainer on a stick and you dip it in the water to catch little animals. I caught two tadpoles and a baby dragonfly. To finish the excursion the whole of Year 4 went on a bushwalk. The view was amazing! Alannah 4N

Thank You The sponsorship and ongoing support provided by John Schwarzer and his team has been of enormous benefit to our school. The funds provided by Highland Property Agents have been used to provide resources to assist students’ learning.

School Photo Envelopes were sent home last Friday. I am encouraging as many parents as possible to order their photos online. (This will operate in much the same way as our Textbook orders did earlier in the year.) It saves us an enormous amount of time and puts a lot of the organisation back onto the Photographers.

We are continually working on better solutions for student safety at our school. If you have a concern or an issue that needs to be addressed, please do not approach a child or children in the playground or on the street as they make their way to and from school. A child can feel very threatened when approached by an adult. If this happens we are required to apply the Inclosed Lands Act to ensure student safety. If you have an issue, please contact the school office and make an appointment to see me.

Year 5 Excursion to Minnamurra Rainforest On the 16th March, Year 5 went to Minnamurra Rainforest. To top it off, we got to go there when it was raining! The most interesting thing I learnt was that the lyrebird can mimic anything it hears. Our ranger took us on an exotic bushwalk where three people in our group got leeches!!!! Noah 4/5N We saw lots of different types of trees, leaves and plants. We saw stinging trees, really tall trees and lianas. We also saw lyrebirds, leeches, slugs, mosquitoes and even a tree frog. An interesting fact about the tree frog is that when it’s in a dark place, it turns a dark brown colour and when it’s in the trees, it turns a greeny colour and so on. It was really interesting looking and learning about the rainforest because I had never been to one. Kayli 4/5N It was raining under the roof of the canopy but we didn’t get wet. We had a history lesson about Minnamurra Rainforest and then we went on a bushwalk. I touched a tree that was over 1000 years old. Zach 4/5N We learnt that Minnamurra means plenty of fish. We saw some pretty awesome rapids splashing on the huge rocks and boulders. It was definitely a fun day overall. Annalize 4/5N

The Easter Hat Parade for all students in K-2 was on Thursday. The K-2 assembly was just beautiful. The hat parades, the singing and the smiles on the students faces said it all. Thank you parents. The K-2 students showcased their hats to the primary after recess when we all came together for the Easter Raffle.

CRAZY HAIR DAY @ BURRANEER BAY!

The roof was raised at Burraneer Bay on Wednesday when Rafael,

Hudson and Mr Fisher bravely shaved their heads to raise much

needed funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. Rafael, one of our

school prefects led this wonderful initiative. Students enjoyed

participating in the day by decorating their hair. There were

certainly some gravity-defying hairstyles!

FAREWELL MR FITZGERALD We said farewell to Mr Fitzgerald at our K-6 Combined Assembly today. Values Certificates, Pennants and White Ribbon Awards were presented to the students. The Band, Senior Choir and Combined Senior Dance Group performed. It was such a wonderful assembly. The children were all very excited to see Mr Fitzgerald. It was a wonderful tribute to an AWESOME Principal.

The students were so excited to present with a special book of memories. All the staff and students designed a special page to go in the book. The finished result was priceless.

A keepsake he will have forever.

Our school leaders were excellent role models for their peers and younger students. They entertained everyone with their Prefect Skit and shared a special moment with Mr Fitzgerald at the end of the assembly.

School Development Day Next Term A reminder to all parents that there is a school development day at the beginning of next term. Monday 24 April will be a student free day and the following day is the Anzac Day public holiday. All students will return to school on Wednesday April 26 for the beginning of Term 2. All of our staff will participate in a full day of professional learning focused on Writing. Parents and community members are invited to attend our special Anzac Day Assembly on Wednesday April 26th. (This is the day that the students return for Term 2.) This assembly is always a special tribute to the men and women who have been lost their lives in time of war. Year 6 students have been researching the ANZACS. They have written poems and stories and produced artworks that they will share on the day. The assembly will be held in the school hall and will begin at 12:15pm. Happy Holidays I would like to wish all of our families a happy and safe holiday break. Thank you for all of your support and hard work in ensuring Term 1 has been fabulous for your children and for our school as a whole.
