Security
Personal Safety
• Be alert at all times at what is going on around you• Have a plan and survival mind set• Use a buddy system or call for an escort, particularly at
night, 505-277-2241• Use well-lighted, well traveled routes• Walk with confidence• Trust your instincts• If someone makes you feel uncomfortable or is too friendly,
contact a staff member or call campus police. Keeping silent may be dangerous
• Flirtation?
Sexual Harassment
• Understand what sexual harassment is. “Title IX protects you from sexual harassment in all UNM programs or activities whether it takes place in the UNM facilities such as classrooms, libraries, SUB, dormitories, or vehicles or at a training or program sponsored by UNM. Title IX protects both male and female students from sexual harassment regardless of who the harasser is.”
• Intent versus perception• Quid pro quo• Hostile Environment• Contact supervisor or OEO (office of Equal Opportunity)• Confidentiality and free from retaliation
Security Guards
• Security guards are non-UNM employees
• Guards stationed on the first floor, at a desk, but also may roam throughout the building
• Will notify UL staff of all security safety related incidents. If they tell you get a staff member.
• Sometimes guards may leave the building to go to another branch.
Security Gates
If any issues arise, grab a staff member
Potential Security Incidents
• Always grab a staff member when something seems wrong:• Reports of stolen property• Unsafe situations• A patron becomes inappropriate or aggressive
• Medical Emergencies• Anything other than a band aid, we contact campus
police for EMT.
Alarms, Emergencies, and Evacuations
Alarms • Localized • Building wide • Assist staff to evacuate the building in the case of a fire alarm,
or other unscheduled closing/evacuation
• What to do when a lockdown occurs• LOBO ALERTS – an emergency messaging system,
campus wide• Sign up using email or text to receive any campus wide
emergency alerts (loboalerts.unm.edu)
