support in order for their kids to come to camp. Both of these programs obviously exist for those who are in need a helping hand, but there are benefits for the rest of us too. Lots of benefits. Week 2 --Highlights and HappeningsThe Great Camp Combe Caper

talked to her mom. That’s when the moment happened for me. She told me how her daughter came home on the first day animated and full of stories about fun and games, new friends, and funny anecdotes. She told me how she felt like she had her daughter back – the one from before the cancer. It stopped me in my tracks. I hadn’t stopped to think about what life was like for this family. I realized that I take the generally happy chatter of my own family at the end of the day for granted. The scholarship that this family received provided obvious benefits: They could go to work knowing that their children were well cared for and start to whittle away at the enormous debt from their daughter’s medical bills. They could come home together and have a cheerful supper talking about their kids’ day at camp. They could have something like a normal existence. The benefit to the rest of us is more subtle, but its powerful. Their daughter contributed to the laughter and fun of the day. She is someone’s friend. She is one of the ones that cheered for another child’s victory on stage. She is the one who made my life richer because her mother shared a moment with me. In this newsletter, on our website, and on our Facebook page we have information about our Annual Campaign. This is the campaign that funds both our scholarship program as well as our inclusion program. I hope you will take a few moments to watch the video, get a little information, and consider a gift to the campaign.

Last week’s Thrilling Thursday was absolutely amazing! The campers had a blast “accusing” our 4 suspects all week. They all had so much fun helping out our 2 investigators, Inspector Clueless and Roberta Butler. The Campers looked for clues all over camp, all the while participating in some super games such as swiper, cops and robbers, sneak attack, escape from Alcatraz, mustache painting and much more! In the end, the butler did it! If you did not get a chance to see our Camp Combe Caper video, check it out here.

With the colder weather and wet forecast this week, we have decided to postpone our regularly scheduled “Water Week” and replace it with Week 5‘s, “On With the Show”. This Thursday we will be running our talent festival – three venues, dozens of

performances, with singing, dancing, magic, and more. Dust off your violin, start working on your timing, or just sit back and watch the fun, cuz’ this week is all about talent.

(Note: Many of the staff acts involve very low levels of talent). Dress up is strictly superstar – come as your favorite celebrity or just wear your favorite concert t-shirt.

This week on Thr i l l ing Thursday.. . . .

Dear Friend of Camp Combe,

We will be sponsoring two phonathons this July to support the 2014 Annual Campaign formerly know as the Strong Kids Campaign. We hoping to reach Camp parents while Camp is actually in session (when their child or children are having such a wonderful experience).

Please say you will help.

The dates and times are below, but please feel free to join us even if you can’t stay the full two hours. If you prefer not to make calls, we could use your help writing letters as well as thank you notes to those families who make a pledge. If you have a teenager, he/she can earn community service hours by attending.

DetailsDates: Wednesday, July 23 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM Monday, July 28 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM

Location: Camp Combe Lodge (we’ll sit outside if it’s hot and the game room and kitchen are cool).

What to bring: a charged up cell phone. Note: we will have some land lines for those of you who don’t get service in the Lodge.

Please RSVP to Donna Ruppert if you can help and let her know: - The date(s) you can attend (please attend both dates if possible)- If you need babysitting (need ages of children)

Thanks so much!

Donna Ruppert and Gina Campbell2014 Strong Kids Campaign Co-Chairs

P.S. 100 percent of every dollar raised will go to support the Scholarship Fund and Camp Combe’s amazing Inclusion Program.

Every summer your kids make new friends at camp. You hear all about these brand new best friends, and now here is your chance to meet them. Come on down to the Chili’s at Baldwin Place for a night of great food, friends, fun & games. Chili’s has generously agreed to donate 10% of their proceeds to the Strong Kids Campaign. You have to eat dinner anyway. Why not treat the family to a night out and help make a difference for kids with special needs and families that are in need at the same time.

Chili’s has also agreed to loosen up the ambience a bit. There will be contests and games throughout the evening, a chance to visit with your favorite staff members and even some cool prizes. We will be giving out a couple of birthday parties at camp, free days at vacation camp, the ever popular “huddle sno-combe party” and even points towards the spirit stick. There really isn’t a respectable excuse for not coming. Not to mention the fact that all of your kids know about it—they are counting on going.

To accommodate the demand, we have asked counselors from each camp to stagger the times they arrive. below is the schdule: Camp A (Mini, 1+2) - 5:15 Camp 3 - 6:00 Camp Pi - 6:30 Camp 4 - 7:00

We are once again offering, for a limited time only, a special Camp Combe T-Shirt.

As many of you know, we have a tradition here at camp where the campers search out and find the hidden rubber chicken around camp. These t-shirts pay homage to this long standing tradition. All money raised will be put towards our YMCA Annual Campain (formerly known as the Strong Kids Campaign). The t-shirts will be available at our Chili’s and Grand Family Fun Night.

Please click here it you would like order and guarantee your shirt ahead of time. Kids and adults sizes will be available. The shirts sold out quickly last year so act now before it’s too late.
