Week 1 Architecture as a Discourse

Sydney Opera House Architect: Jorn Utzon

Although the design brief stated that it has to be iconic, the final design p r o p o s a l s t a r t e d f r o m s i m p l e diagrammatic design proposal. Utzon wanted the shell to be portrayed like while sails in contrast to the deep blue water ocean it stood upon. The construction process required an advance technology of precast concrete and tiles in order to build the massive shell. The simple design intent of shell form has successfully scoped the architecture expression of interest and makes it an iconic architecture. New technology has created the architectural discourse for the this design.

Falling Water Architect: Frank Llyod Wright Basic geometry has strongly influenced the design and the plans of Falling Water. Falling Water is design in i n t e n t t o r e d e f i n e relationship between man, architecture and nature. Wright integrated the design w i t h t h e w a t e r f a l l b y constructing the house right on top of it. Falling Water has influenced architecture discourses to certain extent as it has successfully emphasized the strong relationship between the architecture, the client and the site. Furthermore, the design intent that extracted from overlapping of basic geometry, has successfully made this house an iconic trademark of Wright’s work.

Relishing Senses. Personal Project

A major design project that was done in my first semester of architecture study, was based on a d e s i g n b r i e f o f a listening place in Carlton garden site. The design idea is based on senses; creating a place for people for tranquility and relishing their senses. A tree house was designed as to create an eye-catching place and to embedded it to the site. The shape of t h e t r e e h o u s e w a s designed based on the shape of senses (ear, eye, mouth). This is a simple based design, yet it could influence architecture discourse as the direct translation of shape could m a k e a f o r m o f architecture.

Week 2 Contemporary Computational Design Technique

Page 7: Week 2 Journal

In modern world, computational design technique has influenced architecture in term of form creations and innovation ideas. One might argue that computational design technique has been limiting architectural innovation as design is no longer part of thinking process, but it has became a utilization of computerization. Computational design must only be ‘a tool’ to create design innovation; it is bridging the gap between representation and realization.

Contemporary computational design has changed architecture as the representational of one’s innovation of forms can be transferred into realization. Sydney opera house is an example of early fabrication computational design. The technology has brought forward the impossible structure to create the ‘unusual’ form. Another example is Frank Gehry’s Disney Concert Hall. This creation of form is possible to be constructed directly from one’s design ideas to computational design representation and ends in fabrication. Creation of spaces inside the building is possible due to computational design programs.
