The pictures that accompany the stories in the music magazines

are carefully selected to represent the artiste in a particular way.

Remember the picture is often staged by the magazine or

commissioned especially for that story. Or it has been taken

by the paparazzi and been bought for that issue of the magazine.

Can you think up a headline for a music magazine

to go with one of these pictures of Justin Bieber?

You are now going to write about the

representation of different artistes on the

front of music magazines.

You will compare how they are

represented differently or similarly on the

two covers presented to you.

You must consider their gesture code;

their clothes and accessories; the

accompanying anchorage text and what

this all connotes.

Remember the representation sells an artiste’s image and a lifestyle

as well as their music. By using specific pictures the Music Press

helps to create and maintain the representation of bands and

performers. Genres of music tend to be represented differently. To

be successful in a genre, the performer often has to fit this

expected representation.

Answer these questions in your notes:

1. Did the images we just analysed fit our expectations of the

artiste/genre?

2. Did the images fit our expectations of the representation of

gender and race? Final thought: do magazines always stick to representing artistes by using stereotypes?

Page 12: Week 12, Lesson 1: Representation in the Music Press · 2020-06-15 · representation. sells an artiste’s image and a lifestyle as well as their music. By using specific pictures

Does the music press create similar images to represent bands/artists?

• How is representation used in the music press?

• How important is creating a certain ‘image’ for an artiste(s) in a magazine?

• Does any artiste/magazine break the stereotypes created in the music press?

The rise of the music video• The history of the modern music video has its roots in the early 1960s with

The Beatles first major motion picture, 'A Hard Day's Night'. This 1964 Beatles movie included musical segments that resemble today's music videos. That same year, the band began filming short promotional films for their songs which were then aired on television variety shows.

• By the time the band stopped touring in 1966, they used the promotional films to tour for them. Soon it was common place for artists to do this, and bands like The Byrds and The Beach Boys were also filming promotional films.

• Bands like ABBA and Queen who were famous worldwide soon began to use music videos throughout the 1970s and early 1980s as a way of promoting their music in other countries without having to go there and perform. Artistes began to experiment with telling a story or showing off their personality rather than simply singing the song.

• Music TV (like MTV and VH1) began in the 1980s with channels showing videos all day long, by viewer request or in countdowns and playlists of what was popular at the time.

• By the time of fast, reliable internet and video streaming sites like YouTube, the choice of what to watch was entirely down to the viewer. Fans could even create their own videos or tributes to their favourites.

Marked Task –

send your response to your media teacher!

Choose any music video (not a lyric video or fan-made video or

one which is purely live concert footage) by any artiste, ideally

a singer or band you know something about.

Watch the video and study it, making notes as you have done so

far this week.

Answer the question in two detailed paragraphs (PEET, where

appropriate) and spend at least 20-25 minutes working:

“How does the video for “(Name of song)” represent (Name

of artiste) and (his/her/their) target audience?”

E.g. “How does the video for “Single Ladies” represent

Beyonce and her target audience?”
