Week 1 - Quiz the Basics

Joseph A. Eulo Fall 2015 Prof. Shari Kessler Visual Storytelling Quiz :The Basics 1. What exactly do we mean by exposure? Exposure is the amount and quality of light that reaches the photographic film or digital sensor. Exposure is determined by shutter speed, lens aperture, ISO and quality of light. 2. How does a light meter measure what is a 'normal' exposure, underexposure? overexposure? Light meters measure the amount of light in your shot. ( two kinds of light readings Reflective and Incident. (Some light meters take both kinds of readings) light meters, will tell you what your Aperture should be in relation to ISO, and shutter speed, and vice versa. If you have a least three of the four variables of exposure then you can find the fourth variable. For example. If I am shooting with and ISO of 800, at 60 th of a sec (Shutter Speed) then a light meter will tell me what aperture I need to set in order to get a normal exposer. 3. How is ISO related to the subject before the lens? How do you choose a correct ISO for a subject? ISO is the sensitivity of the Film/Sensor to light. The higher the ISO number the more sensitive and vice versa. 4. What are the 4 basic variables of exposure? 1) Light, 2) Aperture (measure in stops, controls depth), 3) Sensitivity (ISO/ASA), 4) Time (shutter speed). 5. How are aperture and shutter speed related when speaking about exposure? Aperture (similar to the pupil of the eye) controls the quantity of light that passes through the lens, and Shutter speed controls how long (time) the sensor/film is exposed to light. The combination determines the depth of field. 6. What are the creative controls you have as a photographer in terms of camera and lens? Lens choice, and manipulation of the 4 basic exposure variables provides you with a lot of creative control over how you frame and expose your shot.
