Is the field going to look like a planet? Does it have anything to do with spaceships? Well, last weekend we finally found out what it was about. There is a cargo ship in the middle of the field, and two rockets on each side of the field. Each alliance has half of the field, and only one robot can cross to the other alliance’s side to play defense. Our goal is to score the most points by throwing cargo into rockets and the cargo ship, putting on hatches, and leaving/returning to different levels on the habitat. However, we need to be careful because if we throw in cargo without a hatch patch, it will fall out after 15 seconds. And this year’s challenge is... The 2019 Season Kickoff Last Saturday, the long-awaited moment of the new season finally happened. All the Lakeshore Robotics teams were at Valders High School to watch the moment when the challenge for this season was revealed. We first arrived there around 8:30 am, and we waited impatiently (although many of us still don’t know how) until 9:30 am, when the challenge video was finally released. Many of us were really surprised as there was no water challenge (maybe next year). Following the video, each team went to a different room and read through the 125-page game season manual, which, being honest, was not the most exciting part of the day. Following lunch, all the teams shared their ideas on the rules. Then once again, we were split up to debate strategies. After almost 4 hours of brainstorming, we came up with multiple ideas, which we would talk more about on Sunday. The upcoming week is the first, and most crucial one, as having a strong beginning is the basis for success throughout the season. Students working through the game season manual.

REPORTER THE SEASON BEGINS!

The 2019 Challenge

“Destination: Deep Space” is an interesting

Does it have anything to do with spaceships?

Well, last weekend we finally found out what it

was about. There is a cargo ship in the middle of

the field, and two rockets on each side of the field.

Each alliance has half of the field, and only one

robot can cross to the other alliance’s side to play

throwing cargo into rockets and the cargo ship,

putting on hatches, and leaving/returning to

different levels on the habitat. However, we need

Brainstorming Begins

We spent the entire day working on different ideas for

our robot, as you can see in the pictures. We also

decided what we are going to be doing for this season

by using the hatch panels and balls that we were given.

Throughout the day, we put ideas together and worked

on them with K’NEX (the plastic pieces seen in the

pictures). We ended up with two ideas. One design

focused on using an arm to pick up the hatches and

cargo. The other design used a pendulum and track for

the hatches. We had a vote to choose which idea we

would pursue. In the end, the idea for the arm was the

victor. After two full days of throwing around ideas, we

finally found the direction we needed to take in order

to build our robot.
