Decimals are used for parts of a number that are smaller than 1
Decimal points separates the whole numbers from the part that is smaller than 1
This means 3 +

MULTIPLY BY 10
When you multiply a number by 10 all the digits move one place to the left. The decimal point stays where it is !
Example
1.56 x 10 = 15.6
25.984 x 10 = 259.84
![Page 15: WEEK 1. 1.Think of a number between 1 - 10 2. Multiply the number by 2 3. Add the number 8 4. Divide the total by 2 (halve it) 5. Now subtract the number.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062309/56649efa5503460f94c0c2cb/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
What do you think happens when you multiply by 100?
![Page 16: WEEK 1. 1.Think of a number between 1 - 10 2. Multiply the number by 2 3. Add the number 8 4. Divide the total by 2 (halve it) 5. Now subtract the number.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062309/56649efa5503460f94c0c2cb/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Try these ……..
a)42.8 x 10b)23.765 x 100c)16 x 10d)1876.34 x 100 e)1.2 x 100f)176 x 100g)873.7652 x 1000

What happens when you divide by 10, 100, 1000?
That’s right you move the digits to the right!
Try these
12 10 =123.76 10 = 17635 100 =876.7365 10 = 26538.876 1000 =
1.212.376176.3587.6736526.538876

You need to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide without a
calculator. Make sure you are confident doing all 4 !
It doesn’t matter what method you use as
long as you get it right!
![Page 19: WEEK 1. 1.Think of a number between 1 - 10 2. Multiply the number by 2 3. Add the number 8 4. Divide the total by 2 (halve it) 5. Now subtract the number.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062309/56649efa5503460f94c0c2cb/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
IMPORTANT
And a great tip!
Get in the habit of carrying out an estimate first! Or at least do it after !
This is really important. It checks to see if your answer is sensible!
Examples
189 + 772 200 + 800 96
11000
9.3 x 8.1 9 x 8
Actual Estimate

![Page 20: WEEK 1. 1.Think of a number between 1 - 10 2. Multiply the number by 2 3. Add the number 8 4. Divide the total by 2 (halve it) 5. Now subtract the number.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062309/56649efa5503460f94c0c2cb/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
For these questions pick a sensible estimate
a)102 + 847 = b)982 – 386 = c)522/9 = d)9 x 7.3 =
e)103.2 + 79.9 = f)402.3 – 149.8 = g)8 x 6.3 = h)80/0.9 =
Then check the actual answer.
![Page 21: WEEK 1. 1.Think of a number between 1 - 10 2. Multiply the number by 2 3. Add the number 8 4. Divide the total by 2 (halve it) 5. Now subtract the number.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062309/56649efa5503460f94c0c2cb/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
IMPORTANT
And a great tip!
Example
You need to know how to show a check. This is a really easy way to pick up marks!
2 x 4 = 8 CHECK 8 4 = 2
98 + 102 = 200 CHECK 200 – 102 = 98
