¨  George Washington takes oath of office as President in NYC

¨  In 1794 farmers refused to pay a whiskey tax to the Government. Washington sent 15,000 troops to force them to pay. This was called the “Whiskey Rebellion”. THIS SHOWED THE STRENGTH OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

¨  1796 John Adams becomes 2nd President. He passes the following act :

¨  “Alien and Sedition Acts” – made it difficult to become a US citizen and made it illegal to write, print, or say anything bad about the government.

¨  Marbury VS Madison established for the first time that The Supreme Court had the power of Judicial Review. It means they had the power to check laws for constitutionality.

¨  In 1801 Thomas Jefferson becomes our 3rd President. He made the Louisiana Purchase acquiring more land for the US, but was very confused on whether or not he had that power.

¨  Doubled the size of the U.S.

¨  Jefferson passed “The Embargo Act” in 1807 which stated all US merchants had to stop selling and trading with England as a punishment to England. It hurt US Merchants the most.

¨  The US gets involved in a second war with England in “The War of 1812”. The war proved we could still beat England, and it improved our sense of Nationalism.

¨  Both of these showed state’s rights. They were in protest to the Sedition Acts passed by Adams.
