NEW YORK (AFP) - The death tollfrom superstorm Sandy has risen to32 in the United States and Canada, and was expected to climb further asseveral people remained missing, of-ficials said late yesterday.

Officials in the states of Connecti-cut, Maryland, New York, New Jer-sey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania,Virginia and West Virginia all re-ported deaths from the massive stormsystem, while Toronto police said aCanadian woman was killed by flyingdebris.

Sandy had already killed at least67 people -- including a US nationalin Puerto Rico -- as it swept throughthe Caribbean over the past few days, meaning the overall toll from thestorm is now 99.

New York Governor AndrewCuomo reported 15 storm-relateddeaths at a news briefing.

"Tragically we expect that numberto go up," New York Mayor MichaelBloomberg warned.

Christie said that rescue operationswere still under way, with three sepa-rate teams deployed in Atlantic City, the coastal casino town near wherethe storm made landfall.

The National Hurricane Centersaid Sandy had weakened early yes-terday as it moved inland, but couldstill generate gale-force winds andflooding along the Eastern Seaboard.

US authorities had warned thethreat to life and property was "un-precedented" and ordered hundreds ofthousands of residents from NewEngland to North Carolina to evacu-ate their homes and seek shelter.

President Barack Obama declareda "major disaster" in New York asmore than eight million homes andbusinesses from the Carolinas toMaine were left without power andtrading on Wall Street was suspendedfor a second day.

Seawater had coursed between theiconic skyscrapers of New York's fi-nancial district in lower Manhattan, flooding subways and road tunnelsand shorting out the power grid, leav-ing a half-million households andbusinesses in the dark.

Further south, giant waves crashedover boardwalks, turning coastalcities into ghost towns as the highwinds grounded flights and shut downrail links, public transport and gov-ernment offices.

whether the benefits of screen-ing outweigh the harm ofoverdiagnosis.

All cancer, once picked upin the screening process, istreated, often with surgery aswell as radio- and chemother-apy, as it is impossible to tellwhich growths would have re-mained undetected for the re-mainder of a woman's life.

In August, medical expertsSteven Woloshin and LisaSchwartz wrote in the BritishMedical Journal (BMJ) thatscreening only narrowly de-creased risks that a 50-year-old woman would die frombreast cancer within 10 years -- from 0.53 percent to 0.46percent.

Up to half of womenscreened annually over 10years experienced at least onefalse alarm that required abiopsy, they said.

screening programmes "prob-ably prevent about 1,300breast cancer deaths everyyear," said the report.

But there is a cost.Nearly 20 percent of breast

The panel, set up to adviseBritish policymakers, esti-mated that among every10,000 women invited toscreening from the age of 50 inthe Britain, 681 cancers wouldbe discovered, of which 129would be overdiagnoses, and43 deaths prevented.

The new research adds tothe debate about the dangers ofoverdiagnosis, which seessome women undergo inva-sive treatment for cancers thatwould never have made themill or even been diagnosedwere it not for the scans.

The team had analysed datafrom other trials conductedover many years in Britain, where women aged 50 to 70are invited for a screeningmammogram every threeyears.

The data, it said, pointed toa 20 percent reduction in mor-tality -- or one death preventedfor every 180 womenscreened.

Please let there be no moreDedicated to those who foughtgallantly but did not succeed inthe battle against breast cancer

As she pressed her dry Lips on the fore headWith her trembling handShe softly caressed the cold face

A face that is more beautifulThan all the roses that surround her

It is quietAll that’s heard is the softly sobbingSobbing of an elderly mother Saying farewell to her daughter

As she lay thereThere was a look of tranquilityOn her faceSilently a tear fell from a wrinkled cheekOnto a roseA rose that was cut in the prime of its bloomNever would this rose bloom againBut her battle was fought gallantly until the end

As I gazed at this beautiful but sad sceneMy thoughts drifted backI was picturing all those young facesFaces of young women that passed onYoung women in their primeYoung women who lost the battleAgainst the dreadful breast cancer

As I stood with my silent emotionThere was a lump in my throatI fell to my knees and whispered softly

Dear Lord it’s me againDon’t be madForgive me for knocking on your doorIt’s you I turn to when I am sadIt’s a burden we can’t carry any more

Dear Lord, actually I don’tKnow what to sayBut please, please LordProtect and guide themKeep them out of harm’s wayPlease Lord let there be a cureI know you can for sure

That restructuring carrieda steep price tag, the banksaid, as it blamed chargesgenerated by the operationfor a 2.2-billion Swiss franc(1.8-billion euro, $2.3-bil-lion) net loss in the thirdquarter.

"With the huge recent dis-coveries in offshore EastAfrica (in particular, Mozam-bique and Tanzania), the futureof African gas is, however, ex-pected to shift eastward," saidthe report.

Gas production in Africasince 2000 has been growingby about four percent per year, with exports destined for theAsian market.

"African gas productionreached about 203 bcm (billioncubic meters) in 2011, withproduction led by Algeria,Egypt and Nigeria, collectivelyaccounting for more than 88percent of the continent'stotal," it said.

The report also noted un-tapped shale gas resources inSouth Africa which have beenthe subject of a controversialdebate.

According to consultantsWood Mackenzie, the ease ofaccess to Asian markets and abreak-even point that is sub-stantially lower than rival Aus-tralia could help natural gasexports.

Economists at IHS GlobalInsight said they expect thephysical losses to top the $15billion of Hurricane Irene oflast year.

"With Sandy being a muchlarger storm, it is likely to endup causing more flooding dam-age than its 2011 peer whichwould increase total damageestimates," said IHS econo-mists Gregory Daco and NigelGault in a report on the storm.

"The commercial shutdownof the East Coast is likely to re-sult in gross domestic productlosses that may outweigh infra-structure damages," theyadded.

While some losses to eco-nomic production will be re-covered in rebuilding spending, they said, not all can be re-gained.

Juventus were beneficiariesof at least one wrong referee-ing decision Sunday, defeatingCatania 1-0 to maintain athree-point lead over Napolidespite their hosts having avalid goal disallowed for an in-existent offside.
