Fight against flab can turn deadly By Faten Omar KUWAIT: Obese people try to engage in sports, cut down on calories or eat healthily to lose weight. But when noth- ing works out, they will try anything, and “weight loss pills” and “fat burning” drugs may be the answer. Last week, a young female citizen died after consuming slimming pills she obtained through a social media website. Salwa Amer, 28, a housewife, has tried every slimming drug in the market to get in shape. “I have tried a lot of slimming drugs and most of them are fake. I did not lose weight nor burned any fat as they claimed. I think they just fill those pills with dust! One day, I felt excruciating pain in my kidney and I ended up spending several days in the hospital. Thank God I survived,” she said. Amer particularly warned against pills from China. “Unauthorized imported medicines raise blood pressure and cause dizziness. If anyone wants to use slimming drugs, they should buy it from a pharmacy and ask their doctors first. There are five types of drugs that are given to healthy people to curb their appetites and burn fat, but in my opinion, and from what I have been through, I think the best answer is drinking a lot of water, eating less and eat- ing healthy. The problem is we get bored after a while, and this is when we get into trouble,” she added. Online sellers Kuwait Times searched for sellers of weight loss pills popular on Instagram and Facebook to tell us more about the drugs. A saleswoman at a company selling slimming drugs and health products online, who refused to provide her name, said: “We only sell imported products approved by the law and we have a company here in Kuwait. Also, we have a WhatsApp group to follow up on our customers.” She had some advice for customers. “They should not buy anything that looks suspicious. The medicines must be authorized and approved by the ministry of health. One should know that if a slimming drug has a lot of chemical components, it will affect the body in a bad way. Everyone must read the label and make sure it contains natural ingredients,” she said. Meanwhile, the Consumer Protection Department of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry warned that it can- not protect customers who buy slimming pills from web- sites or social media even if they were tricked into buying the fake products or experience adverse side effects. In such cases, they recommend the person to go to the police and charge the vendor with scam. LOCAL WEDNESDAY, MAY 20, 2015 Nada taught me kuwait digest By Dr Khalid Al-Saleh N ada was a girl in her early twenties suffer- ing from a terminal illness. Nada, who was a blossoming flower, was not expecting this plight. Her peers, loved ones and friends went on with their normal lives and continued their education and entertainment, but Nada’s life changed. Nada experienced excruciating pain that can- not be borne by the strongest of men, and went through symptoms that if distributed to a group of happy people, would turn their happiness into tearful misery. I felt pity for her at the time of her diagnosis because I know the development of this disease. The disease relapsed and returned, and the struggle lasted long between sickness and health, and during each stage of it, Nada taught me. More than 40 years, thousands of life experi- ences and tens of thousands of book pages sepa- rate me from her. Despite all these differences, Nada taught me that any affliction is a grace from Allah if it is combined with patience. She taught me the most beautiful smile comes from where suffering is created. She taught me that the hours of satisfaction are the true age of the human being. How can a girl child, or a child girl, have such ability to bear all these pains, anxieties and fears while smiling and not complaining. Did Nada carry a message for us all? If so, I quote part of her message to you. For you who think your life is a lasting heaven and permanent shade, you are all wrong. You - who when facing any plight panic and die before death - are ignorant. You - who are like smoke, ris- ing above others - are inept. You all will disappear and the additional years you lived more than oth- ers will not benefit you. There only remains what Allah wrote about you, and what you will see in front you on Judgment Day. It is the scale of eternity that never deprives anyone from justice. All that was person- ified by that child, and made it a fact we saw in all her moves. She taught us all practical lessons we had only read about. Finally, Nada died, after spreading the values of patience among all those who knew her. So, who was better for life - that child, or those who leave daily without a trace?
