When we fi rst began to plan Foodie Fest, a two-week celebration of dining and restaurants in the Oak

Park area, we set some goals.

“Maybe we’ll get ten,” one of my col-leagues said hopefully, as we wondered how many area restaurants would participate. I had been hoping for thirty and started to wonder if maybe I was being unrealistic or naïve or both.

I need not have worried. With 52 restau-rants participating as of this writing, Foodie Fest 2014 already exceeds our expecta-tions. We are delighted with the number of restaurants offering specials, the diver-sity of offerings and the many communities represented. By bringing together various business associations, communities and business owners, we’ve created an event that has resonated.

The idea for Foodie Fest came during a meeting between the Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Oak Park (DTOP) late last year. Max Austin-Williams and I were synching our organizations’ event cal-endars for 2014 and noticed a quiet period in February. Inspired by the “Restaurant Week” events held in Chicago and other major cities around this time, we began to

sketch out our own Oak Park-area version. We knew we were onto something when two local restaurant owners enthusiastically embraced the idea. Chamber members and restaurateurs Jose Rodriguez, owner of Aripo’s Venezuelan Arepa House and Paul McKenna, co-owner of Starship Restaurant and Catering in Forest Park have been in-strumental in helping us design an event that fi ts the needs of our customers – the restaurants.

One of the key elements of Foodie Fest is its low cost. Restaurants can participate for free and diners simply have to visit the res-taurants. The Chamber is facilitating and relying on social media and partnerships with the local business districts to promote the event. The collaborations across com-munities and business districts have been signifi cant and exciting to see.

Our volunteer team boasts marketing gurus Emily Sjostrom from Visit Oak Park, Marc Stopeck from the Wednesday Journal, Shanon Williams, Marketing Director of Downtown Oak Park and Sarah Corbin from oakpark.com. We appreciate these local experts as well as their organizations which donated signifi cant time to launching Foodie Fest 2014.

We are especially grateful to Forest Agency Insurance for sponsoring Foodie Fest and underwriting our printing costs and to the Wednesday Journal for donating design services and advertising.

Now, with 52 restaurants to visit in just two weeks, let’s eat!

Visit www.foodiefest.net to see all of the special deals

Foodie Fest is our local version of “Restaurant Week.” The idea is simple: restaurants offer a three-course meal at a discounted fi xed price to give diners an incentive to come in and try them out. You don’t have to carry a card or coupon. Just visit one of the participating restaurants and as for the Foodie Fest special. Most are priced at $10, $20 or $30 depending on the kind of restaurant and their menu. The 52 participating restaurants and their Foodie fest specials are listed at www.food-iefest.net.

How can you get the most out of Foodie Fest? Keep these three guidelines in mind:

Try Something New – With 52 Foodie Fest restaurants scat-

tered throughout the Oak Park, Forest Park, Berwyn area, we can almost guarantee that you’ll fi nd a new place. Maybe there is a place you’ve always wanted to try. Or, visit an old favorite that you haven’t been to in years.

Order the Special – Each restaurant has designed a special

tasting menu for Foodie Fest at a special discounted price. It is fun to see how the different chefs choose to showcase their menus! You can always order off the regu-lar menu, too. Not everyone in your party must order the special.

Tell Everyone – Restaurants rely on word of mouth

to grow and succeed. Whether you are a Facebook person, a Yelp-er, someone who loves snapping an Instragram photo of mouth-watering entrees, or someone who prefers old-fashioned conversation, please - share your good experience. Help our local businesses by talking up our restaurants with your friends, colleagues and social media networks. Help create “the buzz” that ensures our vibrant dining scene is here to stay.

We love to eat. Our business districts are bursting with quality restaurants, ethnic foods from all over the world and a diversity of offerings that compares favorably with our “neighbor to the east.” You don’t have to travel far for a great meal at a great price. Bon apetit!
