HOLLY AND MISTLETOE ARE SYMBOLS OFCHRISTMAS

"Oh, by gosh, by golly it's time for mistletoe and holly. Tasty pheasants, Christmaspresents, countrysides covered in snow."

As exemplified by this holiday hit by Henry Sanicola, Frank Sinatra and Dok Stanford, holly and mistletoe are an integral part of holiday imagery and tradition. Holly is used toadorn a home in green and red finery alongside evergreen boughs and wreaths. In addi-tion, it has become customary to hang a bouquet of mistletoe under which people areencouraged to share a holiday kiss. While these elements of celebrations are now incor-porated into many of the secular and religious components of Christmas, they have verydifferent origins.HOLLY

Holly has been used since the days of the early Pagans as a decoration for midwinterfestivities, when it was brought into homes to keep evil spirits away. The ancientRomans also believed that holly prickles drove away evil spirits, and it held a place ofhonor at December festivals dedicated to the god Saturn. To avoid persecution duringthe Roman pagan Saturnalia festival, early Christians would participate in the traditionof hanging evil-repelling holly on their homes to appear like the masses. Eventually asthe number of Christians grew, the tradition became less of a pagan one and moreassociated with Christians and Christmas. Some people have inferred that holly and itsprickly edges is symbolic of the crown of thorns Jesus wore at his crucifixion, with thered berries representing blood.MISTLETOE

Mistletoe was once held sacred by the Norse, Celtic Druids and North AmericanIndians. It is actually a parasitic plant that grows on a wide range of host trees. Heavyinfestation can dwarf the growth and kill these trees. In cultures across pre-ChristianEurope, mistletoe was seen as a representation of divine male essence (and thusromance, fertility and vitality). The plant also was thought to be a symbol of peace, andanyone standing below it should receive tokens of affection. When enemies metbeneath mistletoe, they had to lay down their weapons and observe a truce until thenext day. This is how the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe likely began, and why aball of mistletoe is now hung in homes during Christmas, a season of peace and affec-tion.

Homeowners who hang mistletoe and holly around their homes during the holiday sea-son should be mindful of pets and youngsters around the plants. Mistletoe and holly areconsidered to be moderately to severely toxic, and ingesting the leaves could be dan-gerous. Therefore, keep these plants away from curious hands. Mistletoe is commonlyhung up high, which should make it less problematic, but holly should be hung high aswell.

Now largely associated with Christmas celebrations, holly and mistletoe were oncepart of pagan rituals and ancient superstitions.

DID YOU KNOW?Exercise is a great way to main-tain a healthy mind and body. Many people begin a new yearby making resolutions to loseweight or build muscle. Toooften, however, men andwomen get stuck in an exerciserut, following the same exerciseroutine week after week. Notonly can this be boring, fitnessexperts advise that it's neces-sary to change an exercise rou-tine periodically to continue tosee results. It's one reason whymany fitness clubs unveil newclasses every few weeks. Justwhen you master the choreog-raphy of a class, it's time tochange! With repetition, thebody adapts and grows accus-tomed to the routine, using lessenergy as a result. That canaffect your ability to lose weight.Changing your workout forcesyour body to work harder, pro-ducing better results. If youexercise with a trainer, discussways to modify your normal rou-tine to surprise your body.Increased intensity, intervaltraining, adding sprints to run-ning, taking different classes, oreven increasingthe frequency ofyour workouts may do the trick.

MAXIMIZE FALL AND WINTER ENERGYSAVINGS WITH SIMPLE TIPS

(MS) - By Scott McGillivray

As temperatures decrease during the fall and winter months, energy usage and costs tend to climb. These five energy-sav-ing tips for your home will ensure the comfort of your family andyour wallet.

1. Adjust your thermostat. Lower the heat on your thermostatwhile you are away from home and before you go to bed. Betteryet, invest in a programmable thermostat so you don't have togive it a second thought.

2. Seal gaps around windows and doors. Cracks and gapsaround windows and doors can let cold drafts into your home.Weather-stripping or caulking will seal these problem areas andkeep your home warmer, without having to turn up the heat.

3. Insulate well to protect your home from the cold. Add insula-tion to your basement walls, headers or attic to make a notice-able difference in the temperature of your home and its energyconsumption. A mineral wool product specifically designed forthermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt, is ideal. Thistype of batt insulation will also provide protection from fire, moisture and unwanted noise. Adding insulation is one of thesimplest and most-cost effective ways to increase home energyefficiency.

4. Make use of natural sources of heat. Pull back your curtainsto let natural light in. The sun can help to warm a room with itsrays on a bright fall or winter day. If there are any large windowsin your home that don't receive much sunlight, keep the curtainsclosed to form a barrier from the cold.

5. Use ceiling fans to your advantage. In the winter, set the fanto rotate clockwise. The blades will pull the air up and around, redirecting warm air that rises back down into the living space. The effect can help you lower your thermostat by two degreesin the winter. While cutting back on energy may seem morechallenging as the weather gets colder, it doesn't have to be.There are many no- or low-cost methods to conserve energythat can provide consistent savings over time.
