Parent Portal Update including Android and Apple appDue to the migration, all parents will have to reactivate their parent portal accounts by following the steps on this page. http://www.lpgs.bromley.sch.uk/1221/parent-portalYou can also download the Firefly for Parents app from the App Store or the Google Play Store. These pages provide a basic introduction to the apps:Getting started (Android/Apple)Bookmarks (Android/Apple)Messages (Android/Apple)You will require our school code to log in for the first time. This is LPGS.

Firefly MigrationWe have successfully migrated our Firefly system to the cloud. This should improve the performance of the system during busy times.Students have been sent the new instructions for logging in (the last reminder was sent on 20/01/20 at 7.00am).

Why should I log in to the parent portal? The parent portal gives you access to your child’s timetable, tasks, behaviour logs and attendance as well as access to subject areas containing lesson resources and other important information. In the future we will be sharing trip letters, consent forms and our medical form via Firefly so will need at least one parent/carer in each household to activate their account so they can access these documents easily when required.

If you have any issues with the above, please e-mail Miss Kelly [email protected]

Legal rights

Legal rights

Usually if you don’t carry out your obligations under a contract (what you are meant to do) you have broken the contract and the other person can claim damages/compensation

Couple have to cancel their wedding due to the coronavirus. They probably had contracts/agreements for flowers, for catering, for cars, for

hotels.Would it be fair if all of those people could claim money from the bride and groom?

Have the couple broken (breached) their contract?

Page 6: Wednesday 6th May 2020 Daily Briefing

Legal rights

The law is different if the contract has ended due to an event outside of either of the two parties’ (the people who made the contract) control. We say that the contract has been FRUSTRATED.

Things that can frustrate a contract and end it:1. The subject matter of the contract is destroyed

2. The government have made something illegal e.g. it is illegal for hotels to stay open

3. Something has happened that makes the contract fundamentally different. The virus situation is fundamentally different for many situations

Page 7: Wednesday 6th May 2020 Daily Briefing

So what happens to the money?

The Law Reform (Frustrated Contracts) Act 1943 says:

1. Deposits must be repaid2. The balance is not owed

3. If someone got something out of the contract/part of it they usually have to pay for it. If one person had some costs then the other one might have to pay for it.

Example:Bride and Groom cancel the booking for their wedding flowers. They had paid £50 deposit an the flowers were

due to cost £500. The florist had ordered some ribbons with the bride and groom’s initials on and that cost £25.00

The deposit should be returned. They don’t owe £450. The judge will probably say that the bride and groom should pay £25 for the ribbons. The bride and groom will probably receive £25.00. The law tries to make it fair

because it is no one’s fault.

Some history

The coronation of King Edward VII should have taken place on 26th June 1902 but the King was very ill and it was delayed until 9th August 1902. This led to a lot of

cancelled events and a lot of legal cases which are known as the ‘coronation cases’. In future law

textbooks there will probably be a lot of cases known as ‘the coronavirus cases’.

Etymology of …mumbo jumboWords with a dark past…

• Name of an idol supposedly worshipped by certain tribes in Africa; said to be a corruption of words in Mandingo (one reconstructed version is Mama Dyumbo)

• …but no likely source has been found in the languages of the Niger region, to which the original accounts relate. Meaning "big, empty talk" is attested from 1896.

• One source suggests the idol/god was used by men of the tribe to “frighten women into obedience.”

Blast from the past

Take the A Train - Ellington and Strayhorn

Last week celebrated the birthday of Jazz Legend Duke Ellington. Listen to the signature tune of this great band written by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Take the A Train depicts the journey from Brooklyn to Harlem on the new Subway.

From the walking bass to the train hooters this remains one of the most popular Jazz standards of all time. Listen to the piano solo by the maestro himself.
