Despite lots of farmers busy at home moving bales still a useful

entry of prime lambs which sold to a very strong trade and to

a top call of £90.80 for a nice pen of heavy weights from

Graham and Vivian Hookway of Torrington with Geoff Grigg

of Bideford close up at £90.20 with three other vendors at £90.

Premium on the day was set at a very respectable 206p/kg on

behalf of Messrs J & L Crouch & Wakeham of Higher

Cookworthy with the overall average set at 192.86p/kg just

about identical to last week.

451 DRAFT EWES

Big numbers forward again today on a day when size mattered.

Mr RJ Turner of Bude topped the day at £98.50 with Mr BR

Tonkin of Ugworthy Barton at £93. Eight pens up and over the

£90 bracket with buyers competing well. Plenty of trade for

the light weight and hill types with many pens between £55 -

£60. Best of Mules types reaching £81 for two vendors with

lots of grazing types between £42 - £56. Overall average on the

day stood strong at £64.87.

71 STORE LAMBS

Numbers were tight however trade was strong with Roger and Sarah Berry of Weare Gifford topping the day

at £63.50 for the best of the store lambs. Best of the couples reached £154 on behalf of DM Cole of Glebeland

with the same vendor selling his best breeding sheep at £112.

Another good entry of calves with a lot

more buyers in attendance this week

resulting in a tremendous trade for all on

offer.

Top call of the day was £485 for a smart

young Charolais x bull sold by Messrs RJ

& CY Matthews from Bodmin closely

followed by the best young British Blue x

bull making £482 on behalf of Mr RWH Dilling

from Highampton who also went on to top the

heifer section this week with his British Blue x

selling for £385. A usual good run of calves from

Mr PH Collins Partnership from Holsworthy saw

their best British Blue x bull sell for £450 with

their Britisb Blue x heifers making £380 and £320.

Messrs J Colgrove & Partners from Mevagissey

sold a smart Charolais x bull for £440 and their

run of very young British Blue x heifers selling to

£268.

Messrs K & MJ Chamberlain & Son from Beaworthy sold their best British Blue x bull for £440 and a fine run

of calves from Messrs SA & EJ Kirk from Petrockstowe saw their best British Blue x bull make £438 with others

at £430 and £372. Plenty of other vendors selling their best bulls in excess of £400.

Friesian bulls topped at £240 on behalf of Bradley Farm Partnership from Camelford with another at £205 for

Messrs K & MJ Chamberlain & Son from Beaworthy with a decent average of £84.92.

The top priced heifers noted above further good heifers saw a Limousin x make £335 for Messrs RJ & CY

Matthews with further British Blue x heifers to £298 for Messrs K & L Care from St Austell.

The winners of this week’s Genus £25 vouchers for the highest priced bull and heifer calves was won by

Messrs K & MJ Chamberlain & Son, Ladford Farm, Shebbear with a British Blue x bull calf sired using British

Blue Fertility Plus fetching £440, the heifer section was won by Mr NK Isaac, Glebe Farm, Hollacombe with

a British Blue sired by Newpole Hearthrob making £268.

Another cracking entry of store cattle saw several consignments of younger cattle this week. A good entry of

60 British Blue and Hereford steers and heifers from Mr G Piper, Holsworthy saw 9 month old British Blue steers £650 for a bunch of nine. British Blue heifers same age to £670 with 18 others at £665 and Herefords

to £510 a good trade. Stronger 12 month old cattle from Messrs RG Wheeler & Son, Torrington saw British

Blue steers to £825 and British Blue heifers to £715. Aberdeen Angus steers £760 and Aberdeen Angus heifers

£665 and many more 9 – 10 months old cattle required to meet this strong demand.

Several overage cattle from Mr B Cowell, Helston saw 36 month old heifers to £1120 with plenty of other

Simmental heifers 36 months plus over £1000. Under 30 month old heifers from the same farm topped at

£1160 for a 26 month old Simmental with steers to £1060 for a 24 month old Simmental 40 months old with

other steers to £1040.

A strong Native sale this week, 17 month old Herefords from Messrs M & S Horn, Sutcombe saw steers £965

with others at £940. Smaller framed Aberdeen Angus single suckled types £955 from Messrs Jolinox, Dolton

with heifers from the same farm to £850. Holstein steers saw a stronger trade especially for those framer types

to a top of £735 for four 20 month old Holsteins from Messrs HR Yelland & Son, Middlecroft.
