The 787-9 will launch on BUE from 30 Oct, and the carrier will move to four-weekly flights from 12 Dec-27 Feb, NZ boss Christopher Luxon announced at TRENZ today, adding that the new route has been perform- ing ‘very well’. “Forward bookings originating from both New Zealand and Australia, and Argentina, are looking very posi- tive and the additional peak season service will give customers more flexibility,” says chief sales and com- mercial officer Cam Wallace, who says the 12-hour flight time is well suited to the Dreamliner. NZ last night launched a 787 on the AKL-HNL route, for more informa- tion and photos see p6. New NZ China Route? Speculation is mounting this week that Air New Zealand may be about to announce a new route in China. The Centre for Aviation first specu- lated last month that NZ could be eyeing up Chengdu as a new destina- tion, and regional manager for Asia Scott Carr was questioned by the NZ Herald in China on the theory. While he wouldn’t confirm or deny, Carr said there may be ‘some news coming in the next couple of days about that’. Carr also said NZ has been assessing other cities including Chongqing, Wuhan, Wenzhou and Shenzhen. Fiji Airways is launching a new incentive for Kiwi agents as it looks to further position Nadi as a hub for onward travel to destina- tions in Asia and the USA. The carrier has noted an increasing number of Kiwis travelling onwards from Nadi, particularly to Hong Kong and Los Angeles, says regional general manager for New Zealand Mohan Chandra. “The numbers are growing daily, they’re helped by us keeping fares competitive, and we offer some ex- cellent connections,” he says. With 13 flights out of Auckland a week over the peak, as well as three from Christchurch and two from Wellington, FJ can of- fer good connections to Los An- geles, Honolulu, Hong Kong and now Singapore, says Chandra. As of 16 Jun, FJ will also launch its new flights to San Francisco, and Chandra says SFO offers a ‘perfect connection’ from New Zealand in both directions, especially for South Islanders on its Christchurch flight. With Nadi Airport recently being refurbished it’s now a much more attractive proposition for a layover, adds Chandra—and there’s new facilities nearby too, such as the Es- sence of Fiji Rejuvenation Centre, which offers a spa and transit centre. . . . Incentive With the trade accounting for some 70% of FJ’s bookings out of New Zealand, Chandra has acknowledged the importance of Kiwi agents too in driving business via Nadi. In response, the carrier will this weekend launch a new Beyond The Islands incentive which will reward retail agents who book their clients to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Ho- nolulu, Hong Kong or Singapore via Nadi with FJ. For every 15 adult or child tickets sold to the destinations, agents will receive their own trip for two to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Hong Kong, Singapore or Nadi . The incentive will be open for sales 15 May-30 Jun, for departures through to 31 Dec. It’s only open to retail agents, and travel must be taken by 31 May 2017. FJ: Sell Beyond The Islands And Win

Round Tyre To Square?Aviation experts have been left scratching their heads after a British Airways flight touched down at Lon-don’s Heathrow Airport with a square tyre. Reports says pilots received a ‘tyre pressure indication’ shortly after departing Hong Kong, however, they decided to continue to London, where they landed safely and made it to the gate without assistance. However, engineers have said what happened is ‘a bit mysterious’, with one saying he hadn’t seen anything like it before. It’s likely the tyre transformed into a square shape due to way the weight of the airplane is distributed, reports say.

SQ’s A350 To AmsterdamAmsterdam has become the first long-haul destination to receive the Singapore Airlines A350-900, with flight SQ324 from Singapore arriving in this morning. SQ took delivery of its first A350-900 in Mar and now has two in its fleet, with another 65 on firm order.

CHC, DUD Capacity UpAir New Zealand will operate extra flights between Christchurch and Dunedin on 13 May, 15 May and 22 May, due to what it says is strong demand. The carrier will operate a CHC-DUD flight 13 May and return DUD-CHC flight 15 May (presumably for fans keen to see the Highlanders play the Crusaders in Dunedin on 13 May); and a DUD-CHC flight on 22 May.

Emirates has posted its highest ever profit for the 2015-16 financial year, helped by lower fuel prices. The Emirates Group announced its 28th consecutive year of profit in the year to 31 Mar 2016, with a re-cord AED8.2 billion (up 50% year on year) and says it’s in a strong position despite ‘global and operational chal-lenges’.Emirates’ airline business posted a re-cord AED7.1 billion profit, up 56% on last year’s results, and a profit margin of 8.4%, the strongest since 2010-11. Revenue fell 4% to AED85 billion due to ‘significant currency devaluations against the USD and fare adjustments following the reduction in fuel prices’. Total operating costs decreased 8% and the airline’s fuel bill fell 31%.Over the year, EK carried a record 51.9 million passengers (up 8%), but a 13% capacity increase saw load fac-tors fall to 76.5% (from 79.6%).

. . . ChallengesEK head Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum says the group delivered re-cord profits and solid business results against an unfavourable currency situation, uncertain global economic environment and ongoing socio-polit-ical instability in many regions. He credited investing in new aircraft, equipment, facilities, technologies and staff as enabling the group to ‘react with agility to the new challenges and opportunities that every year brings’. EK received 29 new aircraft over the 12 months and at the same time phased nine out, taking the average fleet age to 74 months (around half the industry average of 140 months).Al Maktoum says there are more challenges to come but the group will continue to evolve and grow profitably. “Looking at the year ahead, we expect that the low oil prices will continue to be a double-edged sword—a boon for our operating costs, but a bane for global business and consumer confidence,” he says. “The strong USD against major currencies will remain

Tourists OverboardMore than 40 tourists, including Kiwis, had to jump from a burning wooden cruise ship in Vietnam over the weekend. Reports say the Aphro-dite ship was docked in Ha Long Bay when it caught fire and many of those onboard had to jump into the water. The cause is being investigated.

Indo Alcohol PoisoningThe Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is reminding Kiwis of the dangers of drinking certain alcoholic drinks in Indonesia. Trav-ellers have gone blind or died after drinking local spirits like Arak (a rice-based spirit), and spirit-based drinks/cocktails, that had been con-taminated by chemicals, particu-larly methanol.Travellers to Bali, Lombok and other parts of Southeast Asia need to be cautious about consuming alcoholic beverages, particularly cocktails and drinks made with spirits that may have been adulterated with harmful substances, says MFAT. Labelling on bottles may not be accurate and substitution of contents can occur.Symptoms of methanol poisoning can include fatigue, headaches and nausea, and are associated with increasing vision problems such as heightened sensitivity to light and blurred or reduced vision. If travel-lers suspect they have been affected they should seek immediate medical attention.

GBR Coral DyingAustralian scientists have reportedly said that only 7% of the Great Barrier Reef—which attracts around AUD5 billion in tourism every year—has been untouched by mass bleaching that is likely to destroy half of the northern coral. “We’ve never seen anything like this scale of bleaching before. In the northern Great Barrier Reef, it’s like 10 cyclones have come ashore all at once. . . Our estimate is that close to 50% of the coral is al-ready dead or dying,” professor Terry Hughes was reported as saying. Mildly bleached corals can recover if the temperature drops, otherwise it may die. Scientists believe climate change is the underlying driver of bleaching, whilst the strongest El Nino in nearly 20 years has also con-tributed to this.
