F O R E V E R A N D A D A YW EDDING PHOTOGRAPHY FOR A LIFETIME

I’ve been in love with photography since a very young age. There was something about being able to freeze life at any given moment that mesmerized me and filled me with indescribable joy.

Fast forward many years later, I stumbled across the blog of the now celebrity wedding photographer Scott Robert Lim. I was inspired by his rags to riches story about how he got started, and captivated by his wonderful images. His message to all aspiring photographers was “If I could do it, so can you.” Thus the seeds of my career as a wedding photographer were planted as far back as 2006. Truth be told, until seeing Scott’s blog I didn’t even know there were such things as wedding photographers.

I started Vivid Moments two years later in 2008, photographed my first wedding that same year, and the rest, as they say is, history.    This booklet was written to help educate you on the intricate subject of wedding photography from a photographer’s perspective, and how it will play out before, during, and after your big day. Much of the information was inspired by questions that brides and grooms have asked us during consultations, and chances are it’ll answer a lot of your questions too.

Our hope is that this booklet will serve as an invaluable resource as you plan for the biggest celebration of your life.

Yours,

Raymond ChouLead Photographer of Vivid Moments

questions from you

Raymond Chou Eugene Lin

We’re worried that it might rain on our wedding day. What do you suggest we do in case of inclement weather?

Considering we live in the city of “Raincouver,” this is a question we get asked quite often. To date, we’ve photographed enough weddings in the rain that we can confidently say that no matter how the weather turns out, we promise you’ll look stunning in your wedding photos. It may mean that we’ll need to change the photoshoot location to one that’s more sheltered (we know a ton), or have your wedding party members carry umbrellas (which we’ll provide), but rain has never stopped us from capturing the celebration of love and joy at a wedding. In fact, some of our favorite and signature images were taken in the rain.

The truth is, there are worse things that can happen on your wedding day than rain: believe me, a little rain is preferable to family members fighting, your wedding running way off schedule, or couples’ drama between your friends. If inclement weather does occur in the end, it’s all about how well the shift to Plan B is handled that makes the difference of whether or not everybody ends up having fun at your wedding. Remember this: You are getting married. In the grand scheme of things, the rain will won’t matter down the road.

We’re not used to being in front of a camera and don’t know the first thing about posing for pictures. Will you guide us?

If there’s one thing we’re proud of, it’s being able to guide you in a way that you’ll look your absolute best and shine naturally in front of the camera, regardless if you have little or no experience in getting your photos taken professionally. We’ll show you how to stand, where to look, what to do with your hands and feet, how to shift your weight so you’ll look your slimmest, and we’ll even have you laughing and smiling when the mood is right. All you need to do is simply relax, be yourselves, and enjoy the experience.

Do you have much experience working with videographers?

While we don’t have a designated video team, we have worked with some of the most talented videographers in the industry and understand that for some couples videography is just as important as photography. That said, if you have videographers coming to your wedding, we’ll make it a priority to establish a professional, working relationship with them to ensure you won’t only get the best wedding images, but the best video too. If you are still looking for an awesome video company to work with, we highly recommend Wakefield Weddings, whom we will be teaming up with for 2016 and beyond.

Have a question? We’d love to hear from you and answer your question in a future issue of our studio magazine. Please send your question to [email protected].

A N N A & A L E XIn the summer of 2015 we had the privilege of photographing Anna and Alex’s gorgeous wedding. Sunny weather matched the joyous smiles of friends and

family alike as the two said “I will.” at the beautiful UBC Botanical Gardens

How can you be prepared for the biggest day of your life so far? Here, Anna and Alex share:

Anna says, “Don’t sweat the small stuff, because they’ll always be there. Simply enjoy the planning process with your groom-to-be, and surround yourself with

friends who love and support you.”

Anna says, “Surprisingly, I wasn’t that nervous! The day was going by so quickly and I knew if I allowed myself to feel nervous I wouldn’t get to fully enjoy it. The

only thing that gave me a few jitters was potentially saying “I do” at the wrong time, which thankfully didn’t happen.

A W E D D I N G D A Y P H O T O T I M E L I N E

A wedding is a whirlwind of events, gone in the blink of an eye. There’s little more important to a perfectly executed event than an organized timeline. If you are looking to effectively plan out your wedding day with your wedding coordinator or fiancé, here’s a look at a typical wedding photo timeline from our point of view that allows ample time for us to perfectly capture your day. We are here to help assist you in planning out

your day so that you don’t miss a beat.

3 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY

We leave and head to where the bride and groom are getting ready. The bride’s hair and makeup should be well underway.

2.5 HOURS BEFORE THE CEREMONY

We arrive at the getting ready site to capture the finishing touches of hair and makeup and to document the bride getting into her wedding dress and the groomsmen making their final preparations.

1 HOUR BEFORE THE CEREMONY

We leave the getting ready site to set out for the ceremony site.

30 MINUTES BEFORE THE CEREMONY

We arrive and take a last look around and find where the light is coming from to best document the ceremony. At this time, you should be arriving as well. We suggest having a quick refreshment and taking some quiet time before the excitement begins!

IMMEDIATELY AFTER CEREMONY FINISHES

Once your ceremony finishes we immediately begin photographing group formals plus all of your guests. We recommend starting with the largest group first, and working our way to smaller groups from there. If you have some seniors among your guests that can’t stand around for long, their photos should be taken early as well.

1 HOUR AFTER THE CEREMONY

We leave the ceremony site for the bride and groom and wedding party portraits. Make sure you all feed and hydrate yourselves, as you’ll need energy for the photoshoot.

1.5 HOURS AFTER THE CEREMONY

By now we should have arrived at a pre-determined location for the portraits. To save time, we recommend sticking to a single location with a variety of different backdrops instead of multiple locations. We recommend carving out at least 2 hours for this part of the day.

1.5 HOURS BEFORE THE RECEPTION

We finish taking portraits and allow you to head to your reception site with enough spare time to get your makeup touched up, decompress, and recover before all your guests begin to arrive.

1 HOUR BEFORE THE RECEPTION

We arrive at the reception venue before the guests to photograph the interior, cake, and floral decor. We also take this time to set up room lights if needed, and capture candid photos of the guests as they start to trickle in.

RECEPTION BEGINS

At this time we strictly document the reception candidly as it unfolds, including the first dances, toasts, games, and cake cutting. But don’t worry; we are always available for any photo requests you may have throughout the evening. Just ask!

3-4 HOURS AFTER RECEPTION BEGINS

We pack our equipment and prepare for our departure. But first, we will check with you to make sure there aren’t any further photos you would like or an overtime request. We may go outside for a quick night time portrait to showcase the beauty of your location at night, and finish with a strong image for your wedding album.

One week before your wedding we will touch base via phone or e-mail to discuss your wedding day photo timeline. Around a month before your wedding we will send you our Complete Wedding Information form to fill out with all your wedding details including locations, family members, special wedding day events, vendors and much more. This information will ensure we are all on the same page for an unforgettable and stress-free event!

• Be sure to have a hair and makeup trial at least a month before your wedding. This will give you peace of mind to know exactly how you will look and give you the opportunity to change things in advance if necessary. Make sure to bring all jewelry to the trial to see how makeup shades work with the pieces.

• Have your florist deliver your bouquets to where you are getting ready, not the ceremony venue. Since you never know when the mood will strike for a great photo, you’ll want your flowers there and ready to go.

• Find out what the rules for photographs are at the ceremony location. All venues are different, some restricting the location of photographs and even the times in which they are permitted.

• Have food delivered to you after your ceremony. It may be hectic, but take the time to have a bite before your bride and groom portraits since it will be a while before you have the opportunity to nourish yourself during the reception.

• Prepare an emergency bridal kit with clear nail polish, mints, a sewing kit, stain treater, Visine, safety pins, bobby pins, pain reliever and mini deodorant.

• Allowing 50% more time for hair and makeup than you originally anticipated alleviates the number one reason wedding schedules end up running late. This will assure you have plenty of time for all the portraits you want to take before the wedding.

• Make sure you discuss a “rain plan” with your venue just in case Mother Nature doesn’t see sunshine in the cards.

1. DON’T RUSH

With all the things that generally take place during a wedding, it’s inevitable that your big day will run a little behind schedule. Unfortunately, lots of couples decide to make up for lost time by hurrying through their portraits. Of course, you don’t want to feel like you’re running late, but you don’t want to rush through your photos either. A lack of time will simply force you and your photographer into a stressful situation, and won’t allow either of you to make the most of the opportunity you have to document your day. To avoid this, make sure that you factor in some extra buffer time for your photographer to work with you to get a broad range of portraits. As a bride, you put a lot of effort into making sure that you look your best on your wedding day – make sure you’ve got plenty of time to capture that!

2. LOOKING GREAT TAKES EFFORT

If you’re planning on keeping a record of your wedding, it’s likely that you’ll have a photographer present with you throughout the whole day. Don’t underestimate how tiring it can be to pose for a camera over an extended period of time. To paraphrase world renowned wedding photographer, Roberto Valenzuela, if you’re not tired, you’re probably not posing for the camera correctly. To combat this, make sure you get plenty of rest in the lead up to your big day. Being snapped so many times can be frustrating too, so keep in mind that it’s all part of making sure you get the images you want. And remember, your effort won’t go unrewarded, you’ll thank yourself (and your photographer) when you see how beautiful your photos look in the end.

3. F EELING AWKWARD ISN’T ALWAYS BAD

When working with new couples, I always tell them ahead of time that they’re going to feel awkward while posing for their photos and that it’s completely normal. The truth is, the way you’d normally hold your partners hand, embrace, or kiss, isn’t always flattering on camera. A good wedding photographer will take a moment to perfect a pose. And while it might not feel natural, it’s done to create a perfect moment and to make you look as photogenic as

possible. Trust your photographer and have fun with it! Know that this little bit of awkwardness will result in wonderful photos that you’ll treasure forever.

4. BE NATURAL

Do you know how most couples react when they’re having their photos taken for the first time? They typically stand with their weight even across across both feet while their legs are perfectly straight. This is ok if you’re a military cadet and you’re having your graduation photo taken, but it’s definitely not okay if you’re a bride and it’s your wedding day! These photos leave you and your loved one looking stiff like you don’t want to be there – definitely not the look you’re going for! Think about the way you naturally stand. Normally you’d shift your weight from foot to foot – this is exactly what you want to do for your wedding photos too. Not only will you look happier and more at ease, it’ll enhance your natural feminine curves and showcase your amazing dress to best effect. So remember, be natural!

5. DON’T FORGET TO STAND TALL – IT’S YOUR WEDDING DAY AFTERALL

I think it’s safe to say that most of us spend so much of our day sitting that we’ve developed a habit of slouching. Unfortunately, slouching doesn’t make for great wedding photos. It’s your wedding day and you’ve invested a lot of time and energy making sure you look your best. At the end of all of that, you don’t want bad posture to let you down. Your photographs will always look better if you remember to stand up tall. Here’s a little advice … As a former ballroom dancer, I learnt to improve my posture by imagining that the top of my head was being pulled towards the ceiling by a rope. If you look at it that way, improving your posture is quick and simple. To refine your posture even further, try pulling your shoulders back and bringing your chest forward. This will make you look more confident and energetic – exactly the way you want to be remembered on your wedding day!

Although your wedding photographer is an invaluable resource and will guide you during photoshoots, as a bride-to-be it never hurts to be prepared. Here are 5 simple things you can do to make your wedding album positively burst with stunning images.

OUR T E N FAVORITE PHOTO LOCATIONS

Stanle y Park

A classic, all-time favorite location that beckons the attention of couples and photographers all over Greater Vancouver. With picturesque

backdrops like the Stanley Park Rose Garden, Lighthouse, Prospect Point, and Third Beach, it’s no wonder why this is one of the most visited

locations on our list.

Queen El izabeth Park

Known as a horticultural jewel in the heart of Vancouver, this park made our list because of its beautiful natural backdrops and lively environment,

suitable for couples and large wedding parties alike. Another big reason to come here is the zipline ride which is offered free to all newly married

couples clad in wedding attire!

Terra Nova Park

This is our favorite nature style location to visit in Richmond! One of the reasons is because of the wide open fields of grass allow us to capture

those epic landscape style portraits which our clients love. Definitely consider coming here in the late spring, as you’ll have the opportunity to

walk in a field of over a thousand buttercups.

Deer Lake Park

Deer Lake Park is the location we photographed our first engagement session in 2008, and we’ve kept on coming back ever since. In addition

to the vibrant natural backdrops full of lush greens and flowers, timeless buildings like the Burnaby Art Gallery and Hart House will beckon for your

attention, offering classical architectural variety in addition to nature.

Garr y Point Park

If you’ve ever fallen in love with those warm and radiant images where you see couples haloed against the sunset sky, you’ll love this place!

Garry Point Park is our favorite location for a sunset / golden hour style photoshoot. It’s also conveniently located next to the historic Steveston

Village, making it ideal to merge the two destinations together.

Jer icho Beach Park

When it comes to convenience and variety, Jericho Beach Park takes the lead. In no other location will you find a park, wide open fields, and sandy beaches within a 5 minute walk of one another. Like Garry Point, a great time to visit this location would be the Golden Hour which takes place 1-2 hours before sunset.

UBC

We love this place! And it’s not just because we all went to school here. There are plenty of wonderful nature landscapes, but what makes UBC really shine, in our opinion, is its Victorian style heritage buildings and constantly evolving architecture. If you get a chance, be sure to visit the beautiful Japanese Nitobe Gardens as well.

Vancouver Convention Centre

Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, right on the water’s edge with a dramatic mountain backdrop, the Vancouver Convention Centre is perfect for more edgy couples who seek a contemporary and urban look. It’s also walking distance from Gas Town, making it ideal to merge the two destinations.

Gas Town

If you’ve been in Vancouver for any amount of time, chances are this is one of the first places you’ve visited. Gas Town is one of the most requested local photoshoot destinations, and for good reason. It’s historic charm, independent spirit, and unique architecture makes this an all-,time favourite among our couples.

Granvi l le Is land

A popular destination known for its artistic spirit and lively entertainment, Granville Island provides the perfect background for the couple with an affinity towards colorful architecture and natural scenery. It’s also our favourite location to visit at night because of the sight of hundreds of city lights that illuminate downtown Vancouver.

So many things are special about your wedding day. While they may seem like small details, the unassuming pillow your ring bearer carried might have been made from your Christening gown. Or those shoes with the delicate pearl buttons may have been your mother’s. These are the smaller, sometimes unnoticed details that tell the story of your special day, that we document for you at Vivid Moments. 16 V IVID MOMENTS

Here at Vivid Moments we pride ourselves in capturing the most natural, candid portraiture possible. This style showcases your day as it was, helping to bring your personalities forward and documenting your day for a lifetime of memories.

While we shoot the majority of our images this way, it’s also very important to capture traditional formal portraits as well. These group shots are best when everyone is gathered together and ready, right after the ceremony. We allow 3-5 minutes for each desired grouping to ensure maximum results with minimal time.

Because we prefer to keep the number of groups to ten or less for more intimate group shots, we always start with the largest group and break it down after that to allow for mingling.

If you have ideas for any ‘can’t-miss’ portrait groupings you would like to see photographed during this time, make sure to note them on your provided wedding information form. We’re happy to work with you to capture all of your special moments!

Engagements are so engaging. Romance is in the air and the anticipation of a lifetime together comes to a crescendo in the rush during the weeks leading up to your wedding, causing you to wonder: Is an engagement shoot necessary? After all, your wedding pictures share the beginning of your life, right?

Shooting an engagement is important for several reasons. First, this time allows you to get comfortable in front of the camera with your photographer, figuring out how you work best together before the wedding. Next, you can showcase your personalities in a more casual setting, while creating

some fun captures for wall portraits, your wedding sign-in book, sign-in board and Thank You cards (shot early enough, we can also provide the images for your Save the Date cards and invitations). These images also add another dimension to your wedding album, chronicling the story from engagement to your wedding day.

Best of all, you can remember this special time forever away from the throngs of loved ones and friends. This is your time together.
