Dying to ourselves is hard to do. We live in a world of instant gratification hence this concept is unknown and undesirable. As fallen humans, we are wired to seek our own will, live for our self, and define the world by how we perceive it. Yet, Jesus encourages us to be humble, deny our wants and follow Him. The Christian life is an ongoing process of dying to self and living for Christ – seeking His kingdom and will. Dont you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.(Romans 6:3-4) The invitation to die, take up our cross and lose our lives for Jesus, is an offer to have new life, to be in union with Christ, and ultimately be free from sin. For the one who died has been set free from sin.(Romans 6:7) May we make a daily choice to be Christ-like, showing charity to others, as we entrust ourselves to God and die to self. Prayer: Lord, let me give of myself completely, to you, to the people I love and serve. Let me not count the cost, for loving you and your people is reward in itself. Reflection

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)

Jesus invites us to follow him. Part of this is to go through the ‘dying to self’ process. This is when we dismiss our desires and focus on loving God and appreciating others as highly as we value ourselves. We move away from a life of self-centredness. Since we are no longer obsessed with our own interest, we become more accepting, generous, and loving of others. Thus, we become followers of Christ.

‘Don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.’ (Romans 6:3-4)

The invitation to die, take up our cross and lose our lives for Jesus, is an offer to have new life, to be in union with Christ, and ultimately be free from sin. ‘For the one who died has been set free from sin.’ (Romans 6:7)

May we make a daily choice to be Christ-like, showing charity to others, as we entrust ourselves to God and die to self.

Prayer: Lord, let me give of myself completely, to you, to the people I love and serve. Let me not count the cost, for loving you and your people is reward in itself. (Daily Gospel 2020, Claretian Publications)
