Coordinate your gown with your backdrop for the ultimate in congruent bridal style

28 Devon #3 2010 www.wedmagazine.co.uk

Page 29: Wed-Magazine-Devon-Issue-3.html

Recent wedding trends have seen ‘where’ become just as relevant as

‘when’ and ‘how’ so that a sense of place is now a driving force behind

major decisions such as catering, entertainment, theme – and fashion.

Although the mashing of styles and influences is a chic option for a highly individual

affair, many brides are seeking a little calm congruency and collected continuity. By

reinforcing the feel of your event from the décor and the lighting to the food and

the frocks, not only is the day more memorable, but modishly personable.

That’s not to say that linearity rules. Rather, that key elements are present and

reflected in a multitude of ways. Dress yourself according to your surrounds as

bridal fashion assumes a whole new relevance and direct relationship to place…

churchIn keeping with the traditionalism of the location, fashion is fairytale. A

church wedding smacks of historic, religious or family values, which lends

itself to princess style or vintage attire. Of course, there are no definite to

dos. But a simply stylish dress sits well with a church ceremony, drawing

upon elements of understated fantasy and timeless romance.

Ball gowns and flouncy skirts are perfect for a church setting. Big trains and

veiling, volumous frills and spills and textural numbers ooze fairytale glamour.

Individualise the look with modern touches such as bows, pleats, ribbons and

headwear.

The recent movement of emulating, donning or updating past fashions is another

stellar idea for a church wedding. By wearing your mother or grandmother’s

dress, you’ll be adding a sweetly sentimental touch and a dialogue with the past

that is core to the atmosphere of the place.

Alternatively, select a vintage or vintage style frock, such as ‘40s tea length, ‘50s

flirty kitsch, ‘60s boho elegance or ‘70s super glam. Customise with contemporary

accessories or romanticise with heirloom items and create a look that is fully

fitting from all angles whilst being undeniably unique.

gardenCountry house, moorland marquee or bottom of

the garden? Wherever the specifics, an outdoorsy

wedding is both charismatically charming and chic.

Within Cornwall, it echoes a pagan tradition and

is perfect for such a ceremony, being just as

atmospherically apt for either religious or

civil proceedings. Not only is a garden style

wedding hugely adaptable, it is entirely

en vogue with regard to modern day’s

preoccupation with everything green.

Whether you want to have an eco friendly

event or just fancy a pretty place to

breathe in your vows and mellow out

your guests, allow landscape to be

your designer.

Country assumes many guises

that can assist with your outfit

creation. You don’t need to don

oilskins and accessorise with a

rifle to achieve the look, which can be

as subtle or dramatic as you desire. It’s more

about cherry picking from the trends and making

them your own.

In particular, recycled and resourced materials such as hemp

and vintage cut-offs can combine for a conscientious and highly

one-off creation. Back to the catwalk, and a rush of raw edges,

rough cuts and multiple layers are signature styles to opt for.

An unkempt irreverence is striking many a fashionista’s chord,

with outfits appearing to be quickly slung together rather than

carefully choreographed for an elusively artistic aesthetic and

daring appeal.

You don’t necessarily want to look as if you’ve just jumped your

groom in the hedgerows or prematurely trashed your dress, but

there’s a definite relaxed feel that forgoes preened perfectionism

in favour of an au naturel vibe.

Other facets of the look include flowers, patterning and

embroidery, whether it’s in the form of overlays, lace, dress

design or corsages. Add a lace shrug, daisy chain necklace or pin

fresh flowers in your hair to soften or embellish the look.

beachAn understandably popular influence the county over, the coast is a rich

source of wedding inspiration. We’re luckily replete with choice for seaside

venues, but for those eloping to do the deed in more tropical climes, the

look is transmutable across a variety of scenes.

Harbourside, riverside, beachside, even lakeside – whatever water is in view,

there’s a look that will beautifully complement it.

Though the tendency is for a cool and casual event that sways on the flexible side

of fashion, the ensemble is extremely spectral: Grecian goddess personified to

bikini and sarong understatement – and all else in-between – goes.

Current trends that resonate include sleek silhouetting, body conscious styling and

clingy lines. White or exotic colouring – especially sea and sky tones – flatter the

surrounds, and materials that appear to melt onto dewy and sun-kissed skin, such

as silks and sheer sheaths, are hotly in demand. Mermaid shapes and mini lengths

are trendy to boot, providing bare-all beauty or bold, mythological outlines.

Finishing touches may include shell necklaces, glass beading or pearls. Barefoot

allows for anklet and toe ring accessorising, encouraging shorter hems in the

process; otherwise, diamante encrusted flip flops, bejewelled slippers or even

kitten heeled sandals are cool complements.

hotelWhether it’s an intimate setting in a

small hotel or registry office or a lavish

event with exclusive use of a luxury

venue, you can dress to match. As

modern wedding fashion increasingly

sees architectural designs making their

way into boutiques and catwalks, it’s

inevitable that the type of building may

well influence the bridal style.

A castle setting, for example, suggests

grandeur and lends a monarchic image that

many dress styles currently encapsulate.

Fusing bygone romance with dramatic

surrounds, origami, multi-layered creations

to tiered, big-skirted princess-styles hit the

mark.

Towering surrounds can be echoed by

contemporary couture, whereby puffball

and stand-out or billowing styles create

a statuesque, walking piece of modern

art. Futuristic cuts and simple, sharp lines

merged with metallics are a signature,

almost space-age look.

There’s also a mathematical element

to fashion’s zeitgeist, with geometric,

asymmetric and square shapes being

flaunted and incorporated into elaborate

ensembles.

Dramatic themes and era wear, such

as Victorian and Gothic, is infused via

patterning such as baroque, sky high

headwear, monochrome and lavish layers of

mixed materials and statement jewellery.

Co-ordination is key to many a marriage, so why not

wear a ring that reflects your spouse’s? Take your pick

from the sleek and sparkling new wave of designs for a

synchronised statement.

A. Bejewelled and bedazzled, this trio of bands brings a touch

of diamond-encrusted decadence to your wedded hands.

B. Replace the bling with a plain band for modern style with

a silken sheen, while a single diamond brings a simple yet

glamorous flourish.

C. Go geometric with a contemporary design fused with

luxurious gem inlays.

D. Blending silky smooth texture and a smattering of diamond

detail, these bold bands are a nod to fresh and fabulous style.

E. Dainty stones dotted across the ring achieve a more refined

and delicate look whilst maintaining a little luxe ornamentation.

F. Modern shapes strike a standout look. Break the mould with

a show-stealing stone for extra embellishment.

G. A series of little circles cleverly extend the ring’s theme of

circularity and the eternal bond of marriage. With diamonds

thrown into the mix for glittery measure, this makes for a

classy combination.

wedding superstition

Believe it or not, rain on your wedding day can be a good omen. In some cultures, rain

on your wedding day is a sign that you will have many children, while the Hindu belief

that rain signifies a strong and happy marriage is derived from the idea of 'tying the knot'

- after all, a wet knot is more difficult to untie than a dry one.

THE BRIDES GUIDE TO BRIDESMAIDS

Bridesmaids. Your innermost circle of female buddies, your closest

confidantes, your sisters on the road to married life. They’re the ones you

can trust in to coo over your gown, ease your agonising over the table décor

and mop your brow after a particularly boozy hen night. As a source of

moral support, the bridesmaid role is a crucial one.

But cast out those visions of the identikit bridesmaids of yesteryear. Forget the

masked grins that failed to hide an obvious distaste for the matching puffball sleeved

neon green frocks. Erase the cliché of the perfectly polished friend slipping into

sozzled disarray and proceeding to gyrate seductively against the best man during

the inevitable Shania Twain number.

For times have changed. Rules have been broken. A good number of traditions have

been trashed (just maybe not the one involving the booze and the best man).

If you’re feeling a little lost on the modern bridesmaid conundrum, let Wed guide

you, from the proposal through to the party.

A question of who?Perhaps you picked your bridesmaids back in 1990 when you first developed that

crush on the gorgeous boy in your class with the curtains hair cut and Nike Airs. Or

perhaps the thought of deciding between your group of gals is enough to regularly

wake you in a cold sweat.

If you’re the latter, don’t fret. The whole concept of bridesmaids is supposed to be

about easing the bride’s stress levels, not adding to it. Put some careful consideration

into your decision, but save the sweating for the face-off with your mother over the

guest list.

Let’s start with the question of how many. There are no hard and fast rules, though

the number is often relative to the scale of the wedding and the size of the venue.

Whether you envision a Katie Price style entourage or a minimalist approach, the

number is up to you – though do bear in mind, the more bridesmaids you have, the

more communicating and coordinating you’ll have to do, so choose a manageable

(and, if you’re paying, affordable) number.

So you’ve got a number in mind. Now comes the big decision: who to choose?

Remember that a bridesmaid isn’t just there to look pretty: a good bridesmaid will

have a number of attributes that will make life a whole lot easier for you. She will

be a genuine friend; she will be supportive and know how to have fun. She will

be happy to muck in and help you write place cards or do a bit of online research

for the exact shade of biodegradable confetti. And, most importantly, she will be

willing to endure endless shopping trips, wedding talk and last minute meltdowns.

Don’t feel pressured into picking someone you don’t want. It is an entirely personal

choice – and the right group of ‘maids will make the whole process of planning your

wedding, and the day itself, less stressful and more enjoyable.

If you do find yourself in a situation where you have to make tough decisions

between friends, don’t torture yourself with visions of rifts and hard feelings.

Remember, you left the playground behind a long time ago and good friends will

understand. As wedding planner Sasha Wilkinson from A Certain Style asserts, your

close friends can still be involved in the planning process, “Give them special jobs,

such as a reading in the church or helping you choose the perfect dress.”

And don’t forget the crucial issue of timing. “It is worth deciding on your bridesmaids

before you announce the engagement,” Sasha advises. “That way, you can ask them

straight away, which is important if you think you’ve made a potentially contentious

decision.” During the excited babble of breaking your news, you could find yourself

spontaneously ‘popping the question’ to more friends than you envisioned, which

you may come to regret later.

The dress dilemma Historically, bridesmaids would dress in identical clothing as the bride to confuse evil

spirits that were believed to be present at marriage ceremonies. The Victorian era,

however, heralded change and the emergence of the white wedding dress, which

ensured the bride stood out from the crowd.

Although the bridesmaids’ role is no longer to fight off sinister forces, a congruent

sense of style – often chosen to reflect the season, colour scheme or vibe of the

wedding – persists. For example, a laidback beach themed wedding lends itself to

vibrant turquoise, aquamarine or tropical hues, while a vintage style wedding might

require bridesmaid dresses with flouncy ‘50s skirts or tea length cuts accessorised

with pearls.

Many brides still opt for the traditional route of matching dresses, and perhaps you’ll

be one of the blessed few who has all your girls sold on the first dress you see. Or

perhaps you won’t be so lucky. The notoriously difficult task of finding a style and

colour of dress that flatters a series of different body shapes, hair colours and skin

tones has many a bride reaching for the nearest bottle of Chardonnay. In recent

years, some brides have made life easier for themselves by choosing a dress designer

and fabric, then giving each bridesmaid the licence to pick a style that suits their

body shape.

Now things have moved on a step further. The latest trend sees brides simply

selecting a colour then allowing their bridesmaids to choose a dress from any

designer in that hue. Some brides are even permitting their bridesmaids to select

the colour of their choice. Not only does this take the pressure off you, your

bridesmaids will feel comfortable in a dress they have chosen, which they are more

likely to wear again. Modern bridesmaid design is altogether more sophisticated,

elegant and downright stylish than it used to be, allowing each of your ‘maids to step

out in a flattering and fabulous outfit. Plus, a series of different designs in one shade – or

several – gives a bridal party an eclectic and fashion-forward edge. Forget uniformity –

diversity is the key to chic bridesmaids, 2010 style.

Money mattersAhh, the tricky topic of finance. Things have moved on rapidly from the good old days,

when the financing of a wedding was neatly left to the bride’s parents to sort out. Of

course, in many cases, the traditional breakdown of payments still applies and the costs

of the bridesmaids will be entirely covered in the bridal budget.

However, as couples are increasingly sharing the cost of their weddings with their

parents, or financing their weddings themselves, the breakdown of who pays for what

has become less clear-cut – and, in turn, so has the issue of the bridesmaids’ financial

contribution. “Brides who are restricted by a tight budget will often ask the bridesmaids

to pay,” says Sasha. “Or the bridesmaids will at least pay for their own accessories such

as shoes and jewellery.”

Requesting the bridesmaids to foot the bill is more difficult if you have a specific vision

for the dress code, “If you want a uniform look, it is unlikely they will be happy to pay as

each bridesmaid is bound to want something different,” warns Sasha. If you’ve given your

bridesmaids free rein to choose an outfit, then it is more reasonable to request they pay

for it – particularly if it’s a style that they can wear again.

To avoid misunderstandings and potential tensions down the line, outline from the start

what costs you will need your bridesmaids to cover. Approach the issue with caution and

sensitivity; some are likely to be restricted by a slim budget – so forget the to-die-for

Christian Louboutins and suggest items within their means.

Party plannersOnce upon a time, a lady’s last night of singledom might have been marked with a cup of

tea and a game of whist. Not anymore. These days, the hen do might be anything from

a luxury spa weekend to a raucous night at a local nightclub involving a heady combo of

handcuffs, L-plates and naked men.

Whatever the chosen mode of celebration, the bridesmaids usually have an essential role

in its organisation. “Traditionally it is the chief bridesmaid’s job, but it is often done by

several people,” says Sasha. “It is becoming more common for the bride to organise it

herself, particularly if she has been married before or is marrying later in life.”

Whoever is ultimately charged with the responsibility, make sure they are aware of the

things you like and, perhaps more importantly, hate. The hen do has become an important

rite of passage for us girls and the last thing you want is to be subjected to an awkward

cringe fest of strippers, plastic willies and whipped cream if it really isn’t your style.

A trusty team of bridesmaids will choose the perfect event, the ideal venue and invite all

the right people – so all you’ll have to do is relax and have fun.

On the daySo, as far as the bridesmaids are concerned, it’s all about looking pretty from here on

in, right? Well, not quite. “Bridesmaids are there to help the bride get ready, steady

her nerves and make sure she looks her very best,” says Sasha. With hairdressers and

makeup artists to coordinate and possibly little ones to get ready, the chief bridesmaid

will often oversee the preparations and ensure everything runs smoothly.

Before the ceremony, it is usually the chief bridesmaid’s responsibility to make sure the

bride is prepared for her grand entrance, arranging the dress and veil and ensuring any

little attendants are in the right place.

Then there’s the toilet issue: “Throughout the day, the bridesmaids often help the bride

go to the loo,” says Sasha. “With small cubicles and huge amounts of netting, it is not an

easy job on your own!”

Finally, there’s the requirement to party. After all, it is a truth universally acknowledged,

that a wedding reception without tipsy bridesmaids busting some moves to ‘D.I.S.C.O.’

can hardly be described as a wedding party at all.

“Bridesmaids are there to help the bride get ready,

steady her nerves and make sure she looks

her very best.”

feature | GROOMS GUIDE | A MARRIAGE MADE IN CYBERSPACE

Planning on sharing your big day with the world? One man ponders the rise of the web wedding

words Nathan Midgley

Being one for hard-nosed research, I've just put the word 'wed-ding' into Youtube. Almost 650,000 results came back, including the now-legendary footage of a bride and groom's friends dancing down the aisle to Chris Brown's Forever. Over on Flickr I get a massive 18 million results, including one of a 'wedding cake' that's just a large three-tier cake stand smothered in cupcakes (an idea which I've noted, if by noted you mean 'stolen').

One more? Okay. On November 21, a Maryland man created a viral storm by posting the following on Twitter: "Standing at the altar with @TracyPage where just a second ago, she became my wife! Gotta go, time to kiss my bride. #weddingday". There's even video of him updating his status in front of the surprisingly tolerant minister.

It may put the wind up traditionalists, but none of this is necessarily bad. Your wedding, your business – if you want to expose it to thousands of 16-year-old American kids and a curious journalist, why not?

The word 'want' is tricky, though. Who decides? And might there be a bit of a gender gap here? Both of our Maryland couple are on Twitter, but it's the groom who posts from the altar. A few days later, his new wife tweets,

“Can't sleep, very anxious about this new fame. What will become of it?” Let's make no bones about it: if what your wife takes away from the day is anxiety, you've not done a great job.

So I can't be alone in considering a social media policy. It might sound fad-dish, but it's a reassuringly old-fashioned principle: if you care enough about the public record of your day to brief a traditional photographer, you care enough to lay down a few ground rules for incorrigible lifecasters. Especially if you are one yourself.

The good news is that I am, so I've thought about this extensively. Feel free to copy and paste this onto the back of your invitations:

“Facebook galleries must be friends-only; Youtube videos and Flickr sets are subject to approval (contact bride). All wedding content to be licensed under Creative Commons Sharealike 2.0. ABSOLUTELY NO GEOTAGGING. And if I spot you uploading a one-handed mobile photo to Twitpic while I'm still at the altar, I will chase you out of the church and make you eat confetti.”

Just think of it as internet-speak for 'I want everything to be perfect'.

KIDS FOOD

Planning your wedding menu promises to be one of

the most delicious decisions you’ll make between the

proposal and the big day. But while you deliberate

over the jus for your steak, the seasoning for your

lamb shank or the ice cream flavour to complement

your chocolate torte – don’t forget to pay some

consideration to the tastes of the little folk.

Chances are, they won’t fully appreciate the delights of

stuffed mushrooms or smoked salmon – so treat them to

a little of what they fancy. Not only will a spread of familiar

foods keep the children happy, a child-friendly menu is

generally a whole lot cheaper than a standard menu, thus

easing the strain on your budget.

It might be worth providing snacks for children during the

drinks reception. Children don’t tend to handle hunger as

well as adults and cranky, irritable kiddies is almost a given

during the agonising period between the ceremony and the

meal. Arrange for them to be given small bags of cookies,

crackers or dried fruit to maintain their energy levels – and

smiles – while their parents indulge in the canapés and

bubbly. Avoid artificial colourings and E-numbers where

possible to minimise the chances of hyperactive behaviour.

Consider setting up a children’s table in your reception

venue. This will provide young guests with a base for their

social activities, while reassuring parents of their offspring’s

whereabouts. Ensure the table looks fun and appealing:

deck it out with colouring books and pencils, toys, games

and activity sets to keep them occupied during the most

tedious moments of the reception – i.e. the speeches.

Taking the motto,

‘if the children are happy, everyone is happy’, The Round Kitchen Catering Company

has created a tried and tested menu of

sweet and savoury treats to satisfy their

taste buds – and keep the little darlings

fuelled for the evening party.

Marilyn Monroe and Joe Di Maggio – January 14, 1954

The wedding of Hollywood’s darling starlet and the recently

retired New York Yankee took place at 1.30pm in City Hall,

San Francisco. The bride wore a brown suit, ermine collar and

trademark red lipstick, which she passionately transferred to her

husband as they repeatedly locked lips for the clamouring crowd

of press. The small civil service took only two minutes from start

to pronouncement of ‘man and wife’, but the impact of this neat,

nuptial ceremony – captured in iconic black and white photos –

has been a wedding benchmark for over 50 years.

According to the platinum-haired bombshell, the couple, who

spent most evenings in watching TV, had been toying with the

idea of making their two-year romance official for some time

prior to the New Year elopement, but “were not too sure until

we walked into the door here now.” There was no indication of

cold feet as the couple canoodled for more photos in the back

of a blue Cadillac – the car that, like the Chevrolet, was the

epitome of 1950s American style, sophistication and sex appeal.

Elvis Presley and Priscilla Ann Beaulieu – May 1, 1967

An eight-minute ceremony in Las Vegas was to seal Elvis’s fate as the

face of the shotgun wedding in ‘Sin City’. Although the couple had

been together for eight years, the union didn’t become official until the

worldwide rock’n’roll pin-up finally popped the question to his 21-year-

old sweetheart (ten years his junior) with a 3.5-carat diamond ring.

Nestled in her trademark black beehive, Priscilla wore a rhinestone tiara

from which hung a three-foot tulle veil, clinging to the back of the white,

silk chiffon and seed pearl dress of her own design. Elvis cut a sharp

figure in contrasting black silk tuxedo and cowboy boots.

Vegas weddings often have the marmite effect. Love them for their

kitsch cool or hate them for their inherent tackiness, they represent the

freedom of the 1960s – a time of free love, public displays of affection

and a determination to break away from the traditional or conventional.

If you would like to bring a little peace, love and 1960s’ free-spirited

romance to your wedding, you’ll need the wheels to do it – so try VW

Lovebus. Stella, the 1966 VW split screen micro bus deluxe, comprises a

fabulously flexible and uber cool way to travel.

Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Rachel Arden – July 4, 1982

The prince of darkness married the daughter of his manager in Hawaii on the

way to a gig in Japan. After 17 proposals and even more bottles of hard liquor,

the rocker and his soulmate finally tied the knot in a garden ceremony.

Sharon’s floor-length gown had all the hallmarks of ‘80s elegance: lace from

the décolletage ‘v’ to the jaw, white flowing material gathered at the waist

and a train to rival Lady Di’s. Ozzy’s matching white suit, white shoes and

lilac shirt only made his transformation from bat-eating Goth rocker more

remarkable.

The happiness exuded in their wedding photos and their subsequent television

shows together is tribute to a remarkable relationship that has withstood

all the demons of Ozzy’s past – demons he was only able to overcome with

Sharon’s unfailing loyalty.

If it’s a simple, sunny, soulmate wedding you want to create, but you’ve ruled

out the golf buggy transport option, choose a convertible favourite such as

a Morris Minor or Jaguar E type. Devon Classic Car Hire offers a range of

sensational wheels for a breezy, blissed out ride.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton – March 15, 1964

and October 10, 1975

Far from the effortless glamour of their first wedding at the

Ritz-Carlton in Montreal, Canada, the second wedding of

Hollywood’s most passionate pairing took place only a year

after their divorce in Botswana, Africa.

For the first ceremony, the beauty with the violet eyes wore

a yellow chiffon dress and elaborate floral headdress woven

around her long ponytail. Candid photos capture tender

moments as Burton, in a dark suit and burgundy tie, perches

on the arm of his wife’s chair, cigarette in hand, leaning down

to kiss one of the most naturally beautiful and stylish women

to have ever graced our screens.

Ironically enough for a couple so volatile they had to hire out

multiple hotel suites to disguise the noise of their arguments

from other guests, their second wedding was remarkably

serene. Looking sharp in a burgundy polo neck (obviously a

favourite colour) and white slacks, Burton remade his vows

to Taylor, wearing a medieval-style green and white tie-dye

gown, by a river in the presence of a Tswana tribal leader.

From cutting-edge fashion to spiritual chic, Elizabeth Taylor

has known how to make the most of her assets, including her

33-carat diamond ring (a love token from besotted Burton)!

Her motto has always been ‘more is more’.

If you want a pinch of luxury for your wedding car hire try

RILL ESTATE

For rustic romance…

RILL ESTATE Weave your path through mature trees and dense foliage high above the

Dart Valley, and – a million miles from the hub-bub of modern life – you’ll find

yourself amidst the rural seclusion of the Rill Estate.

Hidden in 80 acres of woodland, fields and organic farmland, Rill is a sublime vantage

point to enjoy some of South Devon’s most breathtaking scenery. This sense of

escapism is amongst the venue’s key charms, making for a beautifully private wedding

with exclusive use of the facilities and grounds.

Formerly a dairy farm and group of artisans’ workshops, Rill’s quadrangle of

nineteenth century barns are rich in character. Retaining original features such as the

exposed beams and warm honey-coloured stone of the exterior, the barns have been

sensitively restored to create a modern and fully adaptable space for couples wishing

to personalise their wedding.

Flooded with natural light, the vaulted ceilings of the civil ceremony rooms offer just

the right amount of drama, while the contemporary interiors serve as a blank canvas,

which can be decorated as you wish to create a totally bespoke space.

For a sit-down wedding breakfast in excess of 80 guests, a marquee reception may be

held in one of the estate’s most idyllic locations, offering panoramic views across the

surrounding hills.

Continuing the ethos of flexibility, the menu will be tailored according to your tastes,

from a traditional sit-down dinner to a barbecue or hog roast on the terrace. Utilising

the produce of the estate’s organic farm and the local area, enjoy the freshest meat

and fish Devon has to offer washed down with a fine selection of wines sourced from

within the county and overseas.

And if one day simply isn’t enough, Rill’s 19 bedrooms make comfortable boltholes for

your guests to enjoy a weekend stay. Greet the arrivals with cream teas served on the

lawn, perhaps followed by a pre-wedding feast and brunch on the day of departure.

From the chorus of birdsong and bleating lambs in spring to the drama of a cosy

winter wedding, a bespoke and beautiful celebration comprises the essence of this

distinctive rural retreat.

a timeless setting of rolling hills, woodland, beautiful gardens and, beyond the trees, an

VENUES: CHIC AND PETITEfeature | VENUES | THE GREAT BARN

For breathtaking surrounds…

THE GREAT BARNNestled in a pretty country valley, a church tower punctuating the

backdrop of mature trees, the Great Barn offers a modern wedding in a

classically romantic location.

Situated in the heart of a medieval courtyard, the fifteenth century Barn has been

restored via award-winning architectural design to create a sublime wedding venue.

The 45ft vaulted oak ceiling exudes the atmosphere of a cathedral while the slim

windows and adjoining sixteenth century Roundhouse are a nod to its origins. The

detail, however, is entirely modern: contemporary furnishings and the chic simplicity

of the interiors afford you a supremely flexible celebration space; underfloor heating

emanates from beneath the slate and elm floors, while state of the art lighting and

sound technology allows for a change of mood at the flick of a switch; together with

the superb acoustics, it makes for a perfect party venue.

The soft glow of the low-lit Barn sets a dreamy ambience for a civil ceremony;

couples planning a church ceremony may choose to marry at Ashton Church, which

is just a short stroll down a country lane.

Toast your union in the beautiful walled gardens against a backdrop of flowerbeds,

walls cloaked in ivy and a rose garden. In poor weather, a canvas marquee makes a

rustic setting for a drinks reception.

The Great Barn accommodates up to 200 guests for the wedding breakfast and

the adjoining Roundhouse makes an ideal space for a bar or chill out area. In

keeping with the venue’s ethos of style and quality, a selection of caterers has been

handpicked for their excellent standard of cuisine and service, ensuring lip-smacking

food tailored to your tastes and budget.

Just a few feet from the Barn, Courtyard Cottage serves as a cosy setting for the bridal

party to make their preparations, a sanctuary for young children to nap during the

festivities or a comfortable bolthole for you to spend your first night as newly weds.

From low-key to lavish, this truly distinctive venue invites you to pour your

personalities into your wedding day – and relish every beautiful moment.

WORD PERFECT

THE CEREMONY

Three or four words may have got you here. But what do you say now?

Though “I love you” and “will you marry me?” may speak volumes about

feelings and desires, how do you pitch your deeper thoughts, sentiments

and ethos as a couple on the day of ‘I dos’?

Many people get so immersed in the look of a wedding that they forget about the

words. The fact you’re getting hitched may be statement enough, but consider a few

choice readings and not only will your ceremony be definitively unique and personal,

but the memories of an impassioned poem or philosophical piece of prose that

perfectly portrays your love will resonate for a lifetime.

Why recapitulate the utterings of a thousand weddings before you by dismissing

the decision until last minute and opting for the first biblical text you stumble upon,

simply because it mentions the word ‘love’? A little research and imagination can

unleash a boundless fountain of inspired ideas and express your feelings in words,

making material your innermost feelings.

Beginnings are undeniably tricky. Unless you have a lead, it can be laborious, to say the

least. Leafing through a library load of literature or Googling yourself into circles may not

reap any rewards, so a good starting point is your relationship. By using your coupledom

as a source of inspiration, it draws directly from the entire point of the wedding day –

you. From there, you’ll be surprised at the number of ideas that arise.

For example, was there a specific song that led you to your love? Maybe the lyrics of a

tune that ‘belongs’ to you both – be it a dance floor filler, cinematic soundtrack, theatrical

chime or party piece – could be incorporated or adapted into a meaningful reading.

Perhaps there’s ‘your’ place that can be reflected by a reading – where you met/fell in

love/got engaged – through which all manner of metaphorical meaning can be canvassed.

It’s located as much in the everyday as anything – think food, music, fashion, sport,

personal habits; the idea is to expose the minutiae which makes your bond special,

inviting others to share it and announcing it to all, including each other, in an individual

way.

There are a number of different types of ceremonial readings to consider. If you are

having a church wedding then there will have to be at least one Bible reading, chosen by

you or your vicar. Reverend Tim Hawkins advises the necessity of discussing your options

and choices with the vicar conducting the service well in advance. In this way, you can

avoid a number of potential pitfalls, which could mar the experience.

The main criterion for couples is to “express things personal to them” so that, in

short, you are saying, “this is us”. This allows friends and family to be included whilst

maintaining a wholly personable event. There’s no upper limit with the number of

readings but you don’t want to risk overkill. Tim suggests up to five - or more, depending

on length and timing - but there is no prescribed upper limit. They are best spaced

throughout the service, with the Bible reading/s being performed alongside the vicar’s

meditations on marriage.

The broad principle behind content is to opt for a “positive sentiment”, and though

it seems obvious that any anti-Christian readings will not be allowed, it’s a highly

interpretative arena full of subjectivity so it’s always best for prior consultation and

permission. Tim would personally allow readings from other faiths to be used so

long as they are not disparaging to the Church, though warns that other ministers

won’t – so it’s advantageous either way to always ask.

Of the plethora available, Tim’s personal recommendations are 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

because “like all romance, it’s idealistic and relates to the past, present and future;

to words, actions and thoughts.” For words replete with metaphorical and figurative

meaning that speak of “new beginnings like new clothes”, Tim proposes Colossians

3:12-16. By highlighting 1 John 4:7-11 as talking about “love as coming from God

and love as self-giving”, Tim emphasises two elements that he views as integral to

marriage and its ultimate sanctity.

Prayers can take the form of the standard wedding blessing (“God the Holy

Trinity...”) or can strike a more personal chord, such as Celtic blessings or prayers,

which accentuate place and continuity. For greater idiosyncrasy, many people are

It will be one of the defining moments of your life, so

opting for cross cultural or spiritual readings, such as the Cherokee Prayer, Eskimo Wedding Song or Apache Marriage

Blessing, which all fundamentally relate the same tenets of unity and marriage.

With regards to vows, Tim advises not to tamper with the traditional too much, as Church services have a legal form of

words that have to be adhered to. Most people like them for their traditionalism and because they are “mutual and even-

handed, concise and say what couples want to say”, though many ministers will be receptive to some personal adaptations

or additional exchanges between the couple.

Matching readings to the type of ceremony makes situational as well as spiritual sense. For example, is it a civil ceremony,

humanist, non-secular or pagan wedding? If you have opted for a non-religious ceremony in a woodland retreat, then the

readings would need to reflect that. A Pagan/Celtic wedding or handfasting ceremony has an altogether different feel and

format, with freedom for practically any type of reading. Typical types include the Faery Goddess Creation Myth, The

Charge of the Goddess and The Charge of the God.

Your meditations on love and marriage may assume a number of oratorical forms. A favourite novel or film script (like Louis de

Bernières’ Captain Corelli’s Mandolin) may provide an apt excerpt. In context and with genuine sentiment and relevance, you

could class any whimsical piece as a reading, however unconventional. Even court documents can be utilised, a popular choice

being from ‘Goodridge Vs. Department of Health’ by Massachusetts Supreme Court Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall.

Poetry is always something of a prizewinner. Whether you opt for the Romantics such as Coleridge, Donne, Keats, Lord

Byron, Shelley or the main man himself – Shakespeare – or pedestal your sweetheart via some Petrarchan love sonnets,

your love and audience will be customarily moved. Perhaps you’d prefer modern irreverence such as Wendy Cope or

Ogden Nash (“Marriage is the alliance of two people, one of whom never remembers birthdays and the other never

forgets them”) for some witty words, or Nobel Prize Winning poet deity Pablo Neruda. There are stores of words

awaiting your claim.

Why not ascribe to some philosophical thinking? Kahlil Gibran’s ‘The Prophet’ is a spiritual classic that proffers wisdom on

a variety of subjects, including love and marriage. Then there’s Descartes, Voltaire and Plato’s ‘Symposium’, for example,

to ponder. Consider some Confucius contemplation or look up the I Ching or ‘Book of Changes’ – the oldest of China’s

classic texts that still informs the historic world view of an entire nation – and beyond.

The words that you choose will not only echo in the ceremonial space, but in the hearts of all in attendance – especially

yours. A witty one liner, lively limerick, spoken song or canonical chapter will stir the souls and stick for time immemorial.

So whether you’re inspired by pillow talk, rock anthem rhetoric or Holy Scripture, pen and proclaim it.

The words that you choose will

not only echo in the ceremonial

space, but in the hearts of all in attendance –

especially yours.

TRASH THE DRESS

Destroying something beautiful can be heart wrenching and liberating. Whether you smash a favourite vase, shrink

a coveted piece of clothing or write-off a beloved car, the accidental damage can weigh on more than just your purse strings. But what if you did it intentionally? What if you took

something that you loved and deliberately ruined it?

This is the concept of Trash the Dress. In short, it comprises the opportunity to wear your dress again after the wedding and

photograph anything from a little muddying through to total obliteration. In reality, few brides actually inflict any lasting damage to their dress – for most, the appeal lies in capturing a series of

relaxed shots in unusual surrounds, be it a farmyard, skate park or beach.

Originally masterminded by John Michael Cooper, the Las Vegas photographer has been taking what he deems ‘antibridal’ pictures since 2000. Gradually gaining notoriety with websites such as www.trashthedress.com, it is fast becoming one of the hottest – not to

mention widely debated – wedding trends in recent years.

There’s something inherently wild about taking something pure and precious and consciously damaging it. An element of ‘what would granny say?’ adds a risqué edge and is a definite part of its appeal.

Psychologically, the opportunity to roam freely through a gritty urban setting or frolic in the sea in a wedding dress is a welcome release after the laborious pressure and expense of multiple rounds of searching and fitting ventures for the ‘perfect’ dress. As many

will testify, perfection is tiresome, and this freedom following such restrictions is the remedy. The dress is no longer something to obsess about, nor will it become a redundant piece of fashion

stored in the attic to gather dust as soon as the nuptials are over.

For some, trashing the dress is a means of prolonging the marital thrill and sense of escapism, whilst for others it’s a way of saying

farewell to what has arguably been the result of a lifetime of dreams and desires from girlhood. Destroying or just dirtying the dress can mark the end of the fantasy and beginning of married life – the final act of abandon and play before embracing the practicality

of matrimony.

Beyond that, it’s simply another mode to capture and cherish your gown and to artistically express your relationship to it and each other. The idea is to enlist images from fashion and cinema and

mix them with wedding photography for a unique experience and collection of pictures. Without the convention or time restrictions

associated with the wedding day itself, there’s no need to worry about including every living relative in the shot as it’s all about

the bride and/or groom. In removing many of the generic poses, locations and people from the shoot, it becomes more individual

and personal.

Some traditionalists argue that it is disrespectful to your vows. Many fans of the trend, however, assure that it is the ultimate

symbol of commitment – by destroying your dress you are expressing an intention to never need wear it again and hence, ever get remarried. Therefore, in defying etiquette you are reinforcing the tenants of marriage in an idiosyncratic, modern and stylish way.

So whether you’d prefer to spray paint, shred or simply splash your dress in the shallows, there’s a world of trash that awaits you…

Claire and Andy Having met during a ceilidh at a wedding in Northampton, Claire

and Andy’s courtship became something of an international affair.

At the time of their meeting, Claire was living in Japan and Andy in

Hawaii prior to his 15-month deployment to Iraq. Their first date was

a weekend in Hawaii and, after constant contact throughout Andy’s

deployment, their second date followed a year later with ten romantic

days in Athens.

The couple got engaged on New Year’s Eve 2007 and chose to marry

in Devon. Although they now live in Germany, they didn’t want Claire’s

grandfather – whose 82nd birthday was on the same day – to travel far. As fate

would have it, he broke his hip a week before the event and was unable to

attend, but the couple joined him for celebratory cake at his bedside the next

day dressed in their wedding outfits.

Guests who had traveled from destinations such as the USA, Japan and New

Zealand stayed at Northcote Manor for two nights. On the morning of the

wedding, they were treated to a hawk walk around the grounds whilst Claire

donned her beautiful bespoke dress. Cocktails followed before the civil

ceremony in the Oak Room.

The Rosewood String Quartet accompanied the drinks reception and, at

dinner, guests feasted on asparagus soup, Exmoor lamb and strawberries with

Devonshire clotted cream. The cake made an amusing focal point: having

asked the designer, Kim Simmons, to include a ninja (the subject of a personal

joke between the couple), to Claire and Andy’s delight, it was absolutely

covered in them!

Their international guests were treated to a host of British customs

throughout the course of the weekend: The Exmoor Border Morris

introduced guests to Morris Dancing, while Signs of Life provided the music

for a traditional ceilidh. In turn, the Japanese guests wore Kimono, giving the

wedding a real international flavour.

Clare and Andy were characteristically adventurous for their honeymoon,

retracing Darwin’s footsteps for ten days in the Galapagos.

Clare has several tips for a successful day: “Plan everything exactly how you

want it and then learn to delegate or use a wedding planner. You should

have time to enjoy your special day with your friends and family, rather than

thinking about the details.” In addition, she advises, “Make the effort to find a

quality wedding photographer as the photos will retell your wedding day story

for the rest of your lives.”

Marcelle and NickAn entire weekend of frivolity marked the extended celebrations

of Marcelle and Nick’s wedding. A white winter wedding was as

ambient as it was romantic, and the all-white with subtle sparkle

theme was gorgeously fitting for the venue and season.

The couple hired Combe House for the weekend and staged a house party

on the Saturday evening for 50 guests, who schmoozed whilst indulging on

a candlelit supper of lasagne, fish pie, Thai curry, shepherds pie, pavlova,

bread and butter pudding and fruit salad. Irish band Paddy’s Whiskers

provided a fabulously entertaining warm up for the next day.

On the Sunday, guests were requested to meet at Combe House for mince

pies, mulled wine and elderflower bubbly before vintage buses transported

them to St Michael’s Church. The Bristol String Quartet played as the

guests congregated and Marcelle walked down the aisle to Elgar’s ‘Nimrod’

in memory of her late grandparents who lived in Elgar Country. Amber

Denby-Ashe sang ‘Pie Jesu’ and ‘Ave Maria’ during the signing of the register,

accompanied by special guest Hatty, Marcelle’s terrier, whose vocal efforts

resounded throughout!

Canapes and champagne greeted guests at Combe House after the

ceremony, and the speeches were followed by a lavish wedding breakfast.

With a starter of smoked salmon blinis with Avruga caviar followed by corn

fed chicken breast with truffle pomme puree and glazed lemon tart with

raspberry sorbet, appetites were well and truly satisfied.

A themed cake made a stunning centerpiece: the figurines were modelled

on the couples’ dogs and featured suitcases (Nick is a pilot), making it a

sweetly personal and creative statement.

The band Superphonic played an eclectic mix of tracks before a fireworks

display rounded off the evening in style. Marcelle and Nick spent their

honeymoon on the west coast of Barbados.

Marcelle definitely recommends considering the seasonality of your day,

“Go for a winter wedding, it’s very atmospheric and all the suppliers were

available for our chosen date.” Doing it your way, with all details tailored to

individual tastes and needs is an idea advocated by the pair. Having made a

speech, Marcelle comments, “it was fantastic to be able to respond to my

husband’s speech and to thank my parents, family and closest friends.”

Jenny and TrevorJennifer and Trevor met in unusual circumstances: he interviewed her for a

job at Dingles (now House of Fraser) in Plymouth back in 2001!

The morning of their wedding dawned with glorious sunshine and Jennifer woke

at 5.30am in excitement; champagne flowed as the bridal party busied themselves

making their preparations.

The beautiful service took place in the picturesque setting of St Werburgh Church,

“There were a few tears, many smiles and a wonderful cheer once we were

pronounced man and wife”, says Jennifer.

The couple hired Langdon Court on an exclusive use basis. A string quartet

heralded their arrival at the venue, and guests supped on Prosecco accompanied

by a selection of canapés. The wedding breakfast included leek and potato soup

followed by traditional roast chicken with game chips and bread sauce and white

chocolate cheesecake with iced raspberries for dessert.

The two best men, Andrew and Matt, prepared something very special for the

speech. “Robbie Scotcher, who was the lead in the Blood Brothers tour at the

time, pretended to be a waiter for the duration of the meal. As Andrew and Matt

started the speech, Robbie interrupted and proceeded to sing a song written about

Trevor to the tune of ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ by Oasis. The chorus was written

on pieces of card so the guests could join in, which they did with gusto!”

In homage to their engagement in Jamaica, Jennifer and Trevor chose ‘Is This Love?’

by Bob Marley for their first dance. This kick started a lively evening of dancing and

laughter; the music came courtesy of a DJ and band provided by local record label

Fiftypointfour, while a table magician added to the entertainment and a hog roast

satisfied peckish guests.

The couple shortly departed on an exotic honeymoon: four days in Hong Kong

followed by ten days in Bali.

“Take a few special moments throughout the course of the day for a short period

together, just to reflect, look around and take on board the incredible occasion,”

Jennifer advises other couples. “Your wedding does not end at the end of the

night,” she adds, “the day will be in your heart and those of your friends and family

for many years to come and will always inspire a smile and good feeling.”

Julie and DaveThanks to some mutual matchmaking friends, Dave and Julie

bonded at a Scissor Sisters’ concert in 2006. At the time, Julie was

living in Torquay with her daughter Chloe-Rose, while Dave was

residing in Mevagissey with his five children, Laura, Becca, Beth,

Liam and Emily. After a series of visits, Julie and Chloe-Rose moved

to Cornwall and a Christmas morning proposal followed on the

sands of Watergate Bay in 2008. Another move was on the cards,

however, and the family moved to Torquay just a few weeks before

the wedding!

The diamond solitaire engagement ring inspired the sparkly wedding theme,

complemented by ivory and a splash of vibrancy from the red and pink

roses.

Swing music from The Half Quartet was the stirring soundtrack as guests

arrived for the ceremony, which was held in the conservatory before

gorgeous views across the gardens; Chloe-Rose’s reading from a poem by

W.H. Auden, Julie’s favourite poet, proved a particular highlight. The newly

wedded pair walked out to claps and cheers, marking the union with a

champagne toast.

Keeping all palates satisfied, guests tucked into a buffet which included

honey and mustard glazed gammon, sliced sirloin of beef with mini

Yorkshire pudding and horseradish cream, warm tranche of smoked salmon

with aioli, fricassee of chicken and wild mushrooms, mushroom stroganoff

and vegetable lasagne. Chocolate marquise and lemon tart made for lip-

smacking desserts.

The couple had a surprise during the speeches when Beth took to the floor

and gave a rendition of their lives together so far. Casino Select brought a

competitive edge to the proceedings and local singer Nick Hayman performed

a play list of party classics – including Scissor Sisters of course – which got

everyone dancing. As the revelry drew to a close, everyone ventured into the

grounds to release a romantic array of glowing Chinese lanterns.

Julie and Dave have lots of tips for couples planning their nuptials, “Plan,

plan, plan and write lists of everything! Buy all the wedding magazines

you can as they are an invaluable source of information.” They add, “Your

photos are a lasting reminder of the day so book a photographer that you

are comfortable with and can really relate to. And of course, relax and

thoroughly enjoy the day!”

Stef and PhilFrom a surprise breakfast beachside engagement at

Northam Burrows to a pastoral ceremony in a stone

summerhouse at Tapeley Park, Stef and Phil’s autumnal

wedding was natural to the core. With just six months to

organise the wedding, all hands were on deck to ensure the

preparations paved the way for a flawless event.

Their October wedding boasted a palette of striking seasonal

tones with golds, yellows, oranges and browns giving a sumptuous

yet organic look. Tapeley Park was decorated with leaves,

pumpkins, candles, dried and fresh flowers to enhance the relaxed

countryside feel. Situated just minutes from the couples’ house

and near to the beach where they run their dog Clarence (who

was also a guest), the setting seemed hugely personal.

The highly personal ceremony took place on the steps of The

Toot; Stef walked in to Eva Cassidy’s ‘Fields of Gold’ and enjoyed

poetic readings by friends, followed with drinks on the lawn and a

reception in the stone barn.

Both being avid foodies, Stef and Phil opted for a communal feast

of hearty, local and seasonal dishes. A free-range, rare-breed

pig on a spit served with dauphinoise potatoes, roast parsnips,

cabbage with mustard and carrots, followed by sticky toffee

pudding and custard made for a scrumptious menu. Going for a

‘big family Sunday lunch’ feel, all the food was piled onto serving

dishes in the middle of the long tables so guests could tuck in and

help themselves.

In addition, ‘posh’ cider (the award-winning cider made using the

champagne method by Ashridge Cider) was used for the toasts

and drinks reception. The wedding cake was a stack of cheeses

decorated with figs, grapes and flowers, which were eaten during

the evening with crackers, chutney, bread and roast beef.

Calories were burned off courtesy of aptly named local band, The

Food Fighters, and the celebrations continued until the day’s end.

Looking back, Stef suggests canvassing help from others and doing

as much as possible yourself, “We made the invitations, decorated

the wedding cake and put together the evening buffet. Also, my

mum grew flowers and pumpkins, made chutney and some of

the gorgeous flower girls’ dresses. My sister-in-law organized the

wedding music, a friend lent us an overflow marquee, another

friend cooked the roast beef and my bosses gave us the cider for

the toasts. It made the day even more special because it was such

a combined effort!”

yvonne and NickA mutual passion for motorbikes brought Yvonne and Nick

together in January 2007. Initially a long distance relationship,

Yvonne made the move from Warwickshire to Plymouth and a

romantic proposal in Paris followed shortly after.

It was a case of love at first sight when the couple visited Langdon

Court, and the simple elegance of the black and white colour scheme

complemented the stylish interiors of the venue.

The small trifle of the wedding wasn’t the only reason it proved to be a big

day for Yvonne – it was the first time in 15 years that she had worn a dress

or skirt! Donning a gorgeous halter neck dress, the team from Changing

Faces and Harmony Hair and Beauty ensured she looked every inch the

beautiful bride. The preparations turned out to be a real family event, as

Yvonne got ready with her bridesmaids, mother, sister and nieces.

The day got off to a less than smooth start for Nick. His future brother

in law was driving him to Langdon Court in his Porsche Cayman S and,

thanks to a flat battery, the groom and groomsmen ended up jumpstarting

the car to get to the wedding!

After a moving ceremony, the celebrations kicked off in earnest. The

exquisite wedding breakfast included salad of warm crispy duck with a

plum vinaigrette dressing, roast turkey and Devonshire ham with game

chips and bread sauce and tangy lemon cheesecake with clotted cream.

The speeches were a poignant moment, particularly Yvonne’s father’s

speech, which didn’t leave a dry eye in the room.

The entertainment catered for all: guests enjoyed a fun casino provided

by Casino Select, while the tunes came courtesy of The Big Event. Not

neglecting the little people, Sheila’s Nannies ensured the child guests

thoroughly enjoyed their day.

Shortly after the nuptials, the newly weds spent a relaxing week in west

Cork and a fabulous cruise followed a few months later, taking in the sights

of Acapulco, Central America, the Panama Canal and the Caribbean.

The couple look back with affection on their wedding day, “It was a

relaxed and enjoyable day shared with our close friends and loved ones,”

they comment. And their advice for others? “Never lose focus on why you

are getting married and what the day actually means – that way you should

stay relaxed about the extra details.” Yvonne adds, “Trust the professionals

– you employ them to do a job, so let them do it.”

the summer’s day they had hoped for, as Katie comments, “It

didn’t just rain - it absolutely poured all day!” However, the

downpours and high winds did nothing to detract from their

enjoyment of a wonderful weekend-long celebration.

The English country themed wedding had an intimate and personal

atmosphere, enhanced by Katie’s handmade bunting, favours,

decorations and stationery in a pretty palette of pinks, pale greens

and light blues. Apart from the bouquet, the beautiful array of natural

flowers were home grown by Katie’s mother and arranged by family and

friends.

The festivities began the evening before the wedding with a meal for

family and friends. Harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry provided the stirring

soundtrack to the ceremony at Bovey Castle; the party then supped on

celebratory Pimms before departing for Katie’s parents’ farm where the

marquee reception took place.

Pianist Johnny Fingers heightened the ambience for the drinks reception

and high tea: a glorious medley of scones, chocolate brownies and

cucumber sandwiches. Appetites were further satiated by a buffet

of rare roast beef, salmon, mango chicken, Mediterranean vegetable

and basil salad and spicy bulgar wheat salad followed by pavlova, fresh

strawberries and clotted cream and rich chocolate cake.

The weather conditions continued to rage outside the marquee, forcing

Katie to don some white wellies later in the day, and even causing a

mini fire when a gust of wind blew the side of the marquee so hard

it knocked over a candle! It did nothing to dampen the party vibe,

however, and DJ Mike Snook ensured the dance floor was packed all

night long.

Katie and Andrew headed back to Bovey Castle for the wedding night,

returning to the farm – amidst glorious sunshine – for a barbecue lunch

with family and friends the next day. Then it was off to Morocco for an

exotic honeymoon.

“I would love to do it all over again,” Katie reflects. “It was a perfect day.

There is nothing that I would change – even the rain!”

Katie has some sound advice for brides and grooms to be, “Don’t get

stressed. If you find things are getting too much, take a step back and

consider why you’re getting married in the first place and what is really

important. Enjoy the whole wedding process and take time on your

wedding day to look around you and take it all in.”

Kelly and DanielTen years after meeting on their first day at Swansea University,

Kelly and Daniel tied the knot on a crisp day in January. After

a week of heavy snow, their white winter wonderland theme

seemed entirely appropriate; masses of baby’s breath blooms

were reminiscent of snowflakes, while hanging crystals and crystal

candlesticks nestled amongst the flowers to catch the light. Rather

than a bouquet, Kelly carried a ‘winter hand muff’ of baby’s breath

with her Nan’s engagement ring attached to a crystal brooch on the

front.

For Dan, the day started with a few pints of Dutch courage at a nearby pub

while Kelly made her preparations at Fowey Hall. She walked down the

aisle to Eva Cassidy’s ‘Songbird’ with a lucky sixpence, which her dad gave

her prior to the ceremony, in her sparkly Louboutin platforms. A rendition

of ‘Over the Rainbow’ by friend Abbie lent a stirring ambience while the

couple signed the register, followed by a procession up the aisle to Lynden

David Hall’s version of ‘All You Need is Love’, inspired by the film ‘Love

Actually’.

Supping on winter Pimms and nibbling on canapés, guests mingled while

perusing the wedding photos of Kelly and Dan’s parents and grandparents,

and sampling the treats of the sweet table and Cuban cigar table, which was

topped with cigars and personalised matchboxes.

The wedding breakfast was sumptuous: salted beef and potato terrine

with horseradish cream and merlot reduction followed by traditional fish

and chips with mushy peas served in personalised newspaper using the

engagement photos and an article written by Dan. Dessert was an assiette

of mini desserts including lemon tart, vanilla crème brûlée and mixed berry

cheesecake.

After letting off sky lanterns, a waltz to Norah Jones’ ‘Come Away With

Me’ and a surprise firework display marked the commencement of the

evening celebrations. Their friend Mackie performed a warm-up repertoire

of swing music followed by cheesy tunes and, impressively, the bride and

groom were the last to bed at 3.30am. The next day, guests were invited to

experience the outdoor hot tub overlooking the sea – while it was snowing!

The couple headed to Edinburgh for a mini-moon the following weekend,

followed by a long-haul trip to New Zealand and Fiji in March. Reflecting

on their big day, Kelly and Dan impress on other couples to, “Enjoy every

minute as the day goes so fast, and take a bit of time out so just the two of

you can spend a bit of time together.”

Q&A I have decided that I don’t want to use a colour as a theme for my wedding, but my mum says that it could look very dull

Troubleand strife

Q: My fiancé and I want something a little

more unusual than a hotel for our wedding

and reception, and have been struggling to

find anything. Do you have any ideas?

A: There is an increasing number of distinctive

venues now opening their doors to weddings,

including theatres, manor houses and wonderful

converted barns. For a comprehensive directory

of wedding venues in Devon, check out the

website www.wedmagazine.co.uk

Q: I live in Nottingham and am getting

married in Devon. I don’t know all the

secret beauty spots but would love to have

some extra photos taken in a beautiful

location. What do you recommend?

A: I would talk to your photographer, as I am

sure he or she will know lots of places, from

those that they use a lot to some that may be a

bit more remote or harder to access. They will

also know if they would work well as a backdrop.

Q: Help! I’m pregnant and want to get

married straight away before my bump gets

too big. We really don’t know where to start

and how to get it all done quickly.

A: Firstly, congratulations! And secondly, don’t

panic. It can all come together swiftly – I have

organised a large marquee wedding in just five

weeks. I would recommend hiring a wedding co-

ordinator as they can talk you through your ideas,

let you know what is possible within the time

frame and take the pressure off you, leaving you

to enjoy the pregnancy and the wedding. If you

are doing it yourself, then keep it simple, decide

on your venue and make booking it a priority,

then get your family and friends to help.

Q: We are finding it really difficult to think of unusual and memorable gifts for our ushers and, in particular, the best man. Have you any thoughts?

A: When I got married we had the same problem. Eventually we decided to buy our best man a parachute jump (not sure he has ever forgiven me, even though he loved it when he was safely back on the ground!) It’s a great way of raising money for charity at the same time. On the day, my husband and I jumped as well and lots of our guests came to cheer us on. It was certainly a memorable gift!

Q: I have decided that I don’t want to use a colour as a theme for my wedding, but my mum says that the flowers, venue and dresses could all look very dull. What do you think?

A: If you get this right, the effect will be classic and elegant. For the bouquets, use lots of foliage and white flowers to contrast with your dress. You can use silver and sparkly accessories for hints of colour. Make sure you include plenty of textures, such as feathers, metal, stone and flowers in the reception venue and it will look stunning.
