It was wonderful to have Tim as longas we did. He came into the club
smiling and didn’t stop even during his
last days. He was a regular fixture
coming in each day to play and to tell
us that he had just seen “my very
favorite movie on TCM last night.” He
loved old movies and any western he
could find. He had an enthusiasm for
bridge that was infectious. But, he had that same enthusiasm
for many of his other accomplishments. He won awards for
his sales of cars and recreational vehicles, and after retirement
he worked at Central High School as a teacher’s aide, working
with students with autism. He was married to his wife Lenora
for fifty-seven special years. He was an avid golfer, a Silver
Life Master bridge player, and served honorably in the U.S.
Air Force. And to us, Tim was our Club President for three
years and a good friend. We will miss him.

Our thanks to Bob Knoblockfor having made all the boardsfor our games each month.
The Board passed a new policy that gives the
directors the discretion to levy a procedural pen-
alty for slow play without a warning.
Since a response of 2D over a 2C opener isnever to be alerted, (adopted by ACBL January 1,2012), it would be wise to either ask the opponentor look at his card to see what his 2D bid means. It could be waiting, game force, steps, showing anace or king, or a variety of other bids. This couldhave an impact on your subsequent bids and defense.

From the Club Man ager We ended 2018 with a loss of over $5,200,largely due to declining attendance. Therewere one-time expenditures of $2,000 in 2018that included our share of the new carpeting, overhauling the dealing machine, and thevoucher cabinet. The Board met in Januaryto discuss ways to make up the deficit. Our
Directors have offered to help in several very generous ways:(1) each director will make the game boards for the game heis directing (a savings of more than $1,500/year); (2) the di-rectors of the two section games have agreed to take $60 ascompensation, rather than the $80/96 previously paid (a sav-ings of approximately $2,500/year); and (3) the Sunday gamedirector Lee Boser has been taking a lower director fee andserving as host for a savings of approximately $400/year.Thus, the Directors will be contributing about $4,400 in an-nual savings to the Club. The Board agreed to eliminate cook-ies from the refreshment budget for a savings of $500/year,and Rosemary Zonker has pledged to supply the coffee (TheBoard was considering charging 50 cents/day for coffee andtea). We hope these measures allow us to operate in the blackin 2019. The Board is very grateful to the Directors for theirhelp in dealing with our financial troubles and will continueits search for other creative long-term solutions. The mem-bership can help by increasing their attendance, encouragingothers to do the same and inviting their friends to play if theyare not members already. We all need to pitch in to the extentwe can to ensure the continued good health of the Club.
Tricia Killeen, Club Manager
Bob was such a wonderful ambassa-dor and a great addition to our club. But, he was that and more to all thepeople he came in contact with.Playing bridge he started out on the“B” side (newer players) of our clubbut was making headway on the “A”side (the veterans). Bob’s love for education was evident throughout hisprofessional career. He held executive administrative postsat many universities and retired in 1997 from Notre Dameafter being in charge of the Graduate Education For Minori-ties for seven years. He also served his church and hiscommunity by volunteering his time and talents. For fun andrelaxation Bob enjoyed playing in the MOB Group (MenOnly Bridge) and the Par Putter Golf Club. He leaves his wife of 47 years, Margaret (often his bridgepartner), 3 children & 4 grandchildren. We send our condo-lences to his family. We will miss his infectious smile.
Our bridge Club was so happy tobe able to celebrate many ofMartha’s birthdays especially herlast one - the 99th. Throughout theyears she would come bouncing inready to play with her myriad ofpartners who thoroughly enjoyed
her company. If you gave her even a hint that game waspossible, she would bid it with enthusiasm!
Martha was born in Winthrop, Massachusetts, graduated from Regis College and later joined the U.S.Navy, serving during WW II. She often claimed that, ifshe had stayed in the Navy, she would have been anadmiral (and we believe it wholeheartedly). However, along came William Hosinski, who brought her to hishometown of South Bend where they raised their fivechildren. She was a wonderful helpmate for her Bill as hepracticed law and became a judge. For her children she wasthe upbeat, postive force in their lives. We shall all miss her.
Rosemary Zon ker
Diamon d Life Master Rosemary Zonker achieved the lofty titleof Diamond Life Master by earning over5000 masterpoints during her bridge career. Her achievement became a reality in Decem-ber 2018 so she will be honored along withnibne others at the Spring Awards Luncheon.Rosemary has been a very dedicated member
playing 4 to 5 times a week, driving from Elkhart, no matterthe weather (This IS Indiana, you know!).
Con gratulation s Rosemary!

On April 6th, the SBBC will be honoring members
who have made stellar achievements during the past
year. Our Celebrity Wall features pictures of 2018
honorees including Bob Adams, Pat Borchert, Tom
Hallum, John Hamilton, Bud Hinckley, Lena Howard,
Hugh Metzger, Virginia Stipp, Mike Young & Rosemary
Zonker. Along with this group, the plaques on the wall
feature the top players in the club, top players in each
category (A, B, C, & 99ers), Mini McKenney winners,
Ace of Clubs winners, Friends Who Have Passed Away,
and a salute to all the volunteers who have made this
club a success. Be sure to stroll down the Lane - you
might discover your name on one of the rosters!
The Wall is quite a work of art. We thank Tom

1. Get in the habit of counting your cards BEFORE you
look at your hand. Reason:
a. No result on a board is ever valid unless all players
start with 13 cards
b. The Director may not be able to allow a result on a
board if you look at your hand holding a wrong number of cards.
2. When leading, please choose a card, place it face down on
the table and ask if it is your lead and if your partner has any
questions. This will alleviate having to call the director
because of a lead being made from the wrong hand.
3. Do not fold bidding cards until all the bidding is done
and all are in agreement. E.g.: 1 NT - P - 3NT
Do not assume this series of bidding ends the auction. There
are three players who have bids available.
4. Do not fold playing cards after a hand has been played
until all have agreed on the result.
5. When it is your turn to bid, do not tap the table to
designate a “pass”. Many players have a habit of
tapping the table when they are “thinking”. Is it a pass
or just idle tapping? To make sure there is no misun-
derstanding, please use your green (pass) card.
6. After all players have played to a trick:
a. You can ask to see any card played to that trick only if
your card is still face up. You are not obligated to show your
last played card if all the players have turned their cards
facedown.
b. The only one of your own facedown cards you can
look at is the one you just played - and only until someone
leads to the next trick.
7. Not only should players have legible convention cards, they
also should match their partner's and be on the table so the
opponents can read them.
Our thanks to Bill Searcy, Bud Hinckley and Bob
Knoblock, directors par excellence, for their input.
This issue is a combination of the March and April newsletters, so we will try to cover anynews and announcements for the two months. Several alert situations arose
recently at SBBC gamesIf you are playing weak jump shifts, you do
not alert if the bid is made in competition. You must alertif the bid is made not in competition.
Playing weak 2 opening bids, a non-forcing new suit by
responder is alertable. After a weak 2 opener and a double, anon-forcing new suit by responder is also alertable
If you are playing a convention, please learn all the alerts
associated with the series of bidding.E.g.: Jacoby 2NT - the 2 NT response to a major must be
alerted and the responses to the 2NT (such as singletons,
voids or another 5-card suit) must be alerted. Anotherexample is (Reverse?) Drury: P - P - Major suit - P - 2C.Two (2) clubs must be alerted as Drury - not necessarily a club
suit but asking about partner’s opening bid in 3rd or 4th seat.

ACE OF CLUBS & MINI-McKENNEY
AWARD WINNERS GOOD AND BAD
BRIDGE HABITS AT SBBC
Law 46AWhen calling a card from dummy, declarer
should clearly state the suit and the rank of
the card to be played.
Many of our declarers have morphed into the habit of
saying "play" when calling a card from dummy. While the
ACBL does allow this, the word "play" is deemed to mean
the lowest card in the suit in dummy. I believe this con-
dones a bad habit, and disagree with the ACBL stance.
They go on to state that if there is any possible confusion
to this, the director now rules in favor of the opponents.
Now, a new issue involves declarer's "intent". This
means declarer is allowed to change a card designation if
the intent was clear at the start of a trick, and before he
plays to the next trick
Dummy has K543 of a suit and declarer leads the 2
toward dummy. He then says "play" or "play low". His
intent was certainly to play the K, so he is now allowed to
change the card. The directors are now charged with
determining carelessness or intent. For years, we have
ruled for the defense. This change will not make for happy
campers defending, but it is now the ruling.
Conversely, dummy has A Q xx of a suit and declarer
leads small towards dummy. LHO plays the K and de-
clarer starts to say Queen. Here, the intent was to clearly
finesse, so declarer is stuck playing the queen. No longer
is the term "same breath" allowed, as declarer is stuck with
carelessness
I will continue to comment on bad bridge habits, both
here and at the table.
The directors meet monthly on the third Monday after the
game. Any player is welcome to attend. We discuss many of
our rulings in order to give our players the best game pos-
sible. Questions from our members are always welcome.

Kudos to Bud Hin ckley:Those who participated in the 4/28/19 Swiss
Team game were very pleased that it was a Dupli-Swiss
event since there were only 5 teams
participating. We thought Dupli-Swiss
could only be held with an even
number of teams. We asked the Direc-
tor Bob Knoblock how this was
possible, and he said that Bud created
this movement and it needed only
ONE set of boards. The teams were
spread out across the room and were playing different
boards throughout the session, although, of the 30
boards made, each team played 24 of them. It was a very
enjoyable experience. Thanks, Bud!

Byron (Bud) ParshallJun e 11, 1926 - October 5, 2018
Last November we had the sad dutyof advising our members that we had losta dear bridge friend, Bud Parshall. Itturns out that he found us to be hisfriends also because he left a wonderfulgift of over $48,000 to our club. Wewill be hearing more about how the clubwill remember Bud and how the moneywill be used to benefit our members and promote thisgame that all of us find so interesting and challenging.
Bud was raised in South Bend and graduated from theUniversity of Michigan with an Engineering Degree. Hewas employed by N.A. Rockwell to serve as qualitycontrol manager involved in the NASA Space Program. However, he was not all work and no play. He was anavid fly fisherman, was an Arthur Murray ballroom danceinstructor and achieved the lofty rank of life master. Hewas an extremely tough bridge competitor, particularlywhen he partnered with his favorite partner, Fred Binder. They really kept the other players on their toes. We willcontinue to have him in our thoughts.
We thank him for his generous gift!

our members about this program.

The auction1. Bidding boxes are designed to reduce the possibility ofinformation being communicated between partners by voiceintonation or other mannerisms such as eye contact. Whenusing a bidding box, decide what your bid is going to bebefore reaching for or touching cards in the bidding box. Anextreme example of this impropriety is when you touch a 2Hcard and then pull out a pass card.2. Do not ask for information from your opponents unlessit is your turn to bid.3. Do not ask what a bid means unless you are intending tobid. Asking for explanation without bidding could in certaincircumstances be construed as passing unauthorized informa-tion to one's partner. If one doesn't intend to bid, questions ofthe opponents, should be made after the auction has concluded.

Didja Know.....In competition, your hesitation puts a burden on
your partner who must now base his next bid on hishand and not on what may have been implied by yourhesitation.
Also, the lead of the A from AK is only on openinglead. During play of the hand, lead the K to show youhave the Ace.
No No - Do not underlead an ACE against a suit con-tract.
Guest
Column
This month’s guest columnist is Cappy
Gagnon who will offer a few words aboutShutout Bids. (Ed. note: it was not easy to get only
a few words from Cappy).
SHUTOUT BIDS
Overheard at the Bridge Club after a bidding of N-1C, S-1S, N-4S, S-P making 6! South’s commentwas:“But you made a shutout bid!” North’s answer:“No, partner, I made an informational bid. With your ‘atleast 6 points and at least 4 spades’, my 4S hand shouldpromise ‘at least 20 points and support.’ If you have 12+points, slam should be explored.”
What are some Shutout bids?1. 1NT - 3NT Partner’s hand is known and limited
(15-17 ); therefore, you are the decider (Captain) of theend result.
2. Your partner opens a pre-empt and you bidgame. In this case, you are again the Captain, becausethe opener’s hand is known and limited. You areeither saying “We can make this game” or “We have nohope of making this game, but those guys don’t know itand I’m trying to shut THEM out”.
3. 1H - 2H - 4H Responder’s hand is known &limited (6-9 pts).
One thing all shutout bids have incommon is having one of the partnerswith a “known” amount of pointsenabling his partner to reach the rightcontract.
Thanks, Cappy!

Play of the handDo say ‘Thank you’ to your partner when he/she puts the
Dummy on the table. (Even though you are thinking toyourself ‘where the heck is the hand my partner was bidding?’)
Do, when you are on opening lead, lead first and thenwrite the contract on your score sheet. When you are onopening lead, detach a card from your hand and lay it facedown on the table. This prevents irregularities...such asleading when it is not your turn to do so and allows questionsabout the auction and any alerts to be answered. All players, except dummy, may now request a review of the auction andan explanation of any alerted calls. You, as the openingleader, may ask for any review of the bidding before youmake your first lead. Other players may also ask for a reviewof the auction at their first opportunity to play.
Do not SNAP your cards down on the table.Do not detach a card from the hand before it is your turn
to play.Do not pull up a card, push it back into your hand, and
then pull up another card. Nor should you detach a card andthen replace it to play another card. Also do not detach yourcard before it is your turn to play and never rearrange yourhand when you are out of a suit. All of these maneuversprovide additional valuable information to the declarer.
You have the right to inspect the cards that have beenplayed on the current trick as long as your card remains faceup. Once all cards have been turned over (face down) no onecan ask to see the cards that were played.
At the end of a hand ensure that you do not mix up yourcards until the result is agreed with by the opponents.
North, when scoring the traveler, must present it to EastWest for their acceptance prior to folding and returning it tothe board. The same applies when entering the result intoBridgemates.
Do not look at your opponent's or partner's cards afterthe hand has been played without their permission.

DUMMY'S RESPONSIBILITIES
You may not call declarer's attention to
anything except that he is about to lead from
the wrong hand or to ask if he is out of the
suit being played.
As dummy you may not play or touch any
card in dummy (even a singleton) until de-
clarer calls the card.
If declarer designates a suit, but not the
rank, he is deemed to have called for the lowest card of
the suit indicated. If declarer designates a rank but not a
suit, he is deemed to be continuing the suit in which
dummy won the last trick. Otherwise, be silent during
the play.
Dummy is not allowed to call the Director.

New Addition to theSBBC & the 90+ Wall
BOB BINDERBob Binder recently moved from
Arizona to be near his brother, Fred, and to enjoy our wonderful midwestweather. He will certainly provide us
with another formidable bridge player. We are happy towelcome him as a new member of the SBBC and, sincehe turned 90 some years ago before joining our group, his picture is being added to the “90+ Wall” locatednear the Celebrity Wall. WELCOME BOB!

ILLEGAL BIDSThe ACBL has designated the following
bids as illegal:a. Opening 1 or 2 notrump with a singleton jack
or smaller card. Opening 1 or 2 notrump with a single-ton Ace, King, or Queen is allowed.
b. Opening a 1 bid in any suit withfewer than 8 high card points. Distribu-tional points do NOT apply.
These bids are not considered psychiccalls, but illegal bids. The directing staff hasbeen instructed to issue adjustments to theboard, when informed.
Card Played Law 45AEach player, except dummy, plays a card by detach-
ing it from his hand and facing it on the table immedi-ately before him. All players at the table have the rightto clearly see the card.
We have been informed that some players do notface their card for all to see. This is a bad bridge habitand our players should play their cards correctly.

SOME FORGET-ME-NOTS
Principle of Full DisclosureA major tenet of active bridge ethics is the principle of
full disclosure. This means that all information available toyour partnership must be made available to your opponents.
Let's take a look at “weak two” bids from the pointof view of full disclosure. When an established partner-ship opens a weak two bid, they have a great deal of
information of which their opponents are not aware. Theconvention card discloses the point range, but little else. However, the partners are aware of the range of hands
on which the bid can be made (discipline?, suit qualityrequirements?, five or-seven card suits allowed?, sidefour-card major ok?, void ok?, positional variations?,
etc.). Full disclosure requires that all these inferences, restrictions and tendencies be made known to anyopponent who inquires about their style. If you are
interested in knowing these things about your opponent'sbid, merely say to the bidder's partner, "Would you tellme more about your style?" You may use the style
inquiry to ask about any bid your opponent makes. The actively ethical player will often go beyond
what is technically required in volunteering information
to the opponents. Quite often, the declaring side in anactively ethical partnership will volunteer such informa-tion before the opening lead is made. (But remember, when there has been misinformation given, such as afailure to alert or a mistaken alert, there is a LEGALobligation on the player whose partner misinformedthe opponents. He, the bidder, must give the opponentsthe correct information at the end of the auction if hisside is the declaring side or at the end of the play if his
side is defending.)New players or infrequent partnerships usually will
not have understandings about the items discussed here
and, of course, it will be perfectly proper for them toreply "We have no agreement as to style."

Tuesday October 15 Dupli-Swiss. We had 6 teams in the 399er section, (thanks to MargaretLewis), so we were able to run a dupli-swiss in both sections. That is, both sections played the same boards, at the sametime. The advantage for the players in a dupli-swiss is thatthe results tend to be close throughout. Multiple teams have achance to win in the last round of play. We will try to con-tinue this game as long as attendance warrants. The players seem to like this game, and handrecords are available at the club and online for theplayers’ review.

Holiday Party at the Bridge CenterMark your calendar for De-
cember 14th, get your best friend, spouse or companion, and bring
them to our Holiday Luncheon at 12noon with bridge (ACBL Membership
game) at 1 PM. Lunch is $7 and play is $7 formembers ($8 for non-members). See you there!
SLOW PLAYFailure to finish on time can do a great deal to
chase players away from the game and is extremelydistressing to waiting players. Bridge is a timedevent. If a pair takes more than their share of theallotted time for each round, they are inconvenienc-ing their fellow competitors as well as gaining anunfair advantage over them. When a pair has fallenbehind it is incumbent on them to make up the timelost as quickly as possible whether at fault or not.
The actively ethical player makes a concertedeffort to catch up when they have fallen behind, regardless of the reason for their lateness. Allplayers are expected to develop this good habit.
Avoid hesitations by being consistently deliberatein your bidding and play. An acquired habit of play-ing smoothly and evenly (even on very bad hands)will always give you more time to think. Rememberthat a hesitation followed by a pass places an extraburden on partner as any bids by him or her must bevery clear cut. Do not be upset if an opponent calls thedirector to monitor the auction in this situation as it isthe proper thing to do.Remember: Slow play is subject to penalty, and thepenalties are well earned when slow pairs disrupt thenormal progression of the game.
Additionally, players should be available to starteach subsequent round promptly, avoiding whereverpossible, being late to a table for non-bridge reasons.
If you are still playing when the next round iscalled, finish playing the trick then stop. You mustpass the played boards to the next table before yourestart play.

Congratulations, Mike
We regret to announce thatPatricia Killen has tendered herresignation as Club Manager effec-tive Jauary 2020. She has earned awell-deserved retirement as she has
held that position for 12 years and been involved withthe club since its inception in 2005. Tricia is not justanother “pretty” face” who makes announcements atthe beginning of each game. She has seen to the sched-uling of games (an ACBL complicated nightmare),obtaining the sanctions for our games, preparing themasterpoint reports each month, getting the latest infoabout our members (knee, hip, shoulder replacementsand other maladies), making sure get well & sympathycards are sent out, teaching beginning bridge classes, which has contributed greatly to the stabillty of ourmembership, and helping many players become lifemasters. She’s been known to take a dish to someonewho’s feeling under the weather and always has had timefor us! We appreciate her dedication and we will missher leadership greatly. Thanks Trish!

SOME FORGET-ME-NOTS
1. It happens! You book two partners for the samedate by mistake and then they both show up. The thing todo is volunteer to return home and let the two playtogether if they would like.
2. It also happens that your partner does not show upto your designated game. So it is always wise to call, text or e-mail at least a day or so before to make surethat you have a game together on that date!
