Series are gaining their place in the spotlight: audiences have flocked to these short fictions and Latin American producers have invested in the production of series. Even Mexico, the quintessential producer of telenovelas, is experimenting locally with the production of series.

Despite this, the telenovela still walks on solid ground. Producers strengthen the genre by renewing stories that have been successful in the past. They also look into new themes from other genres like police cases or strong literary works, and they establishing strategic alliances that allow them to increase their budgets and production quality or allow them to take their products to far

away territories such as China. In other words: a lot of creativity is poured into a faithful product that has never ceases to reward producers, programmers and distributors.

“Telenovelas will never cease to exist. They will never disappear because they are an everyday necessity,” said recently to PRODU Luis De Llano, producer of Esperanza del corazón, one of the new Televisa novelas being launched at Mipcom.

More productionTelenovela production is gaining strength and growing in many territories. Peru, for example, is experiencing a prolific time. América TV recently premiered

Perricholi, a period telenovela that has become the most expensive HD production in Peru’s history. ATV produced Ana Cristina, also a period novela in HD; and Frecuencia Latina, which has already produced hits such as Los exitosos Góme$, is now producing La bodeguita.

Chile is also going through an interesting time. Chilevisión, which very recently started producing telenovelas, just launched La Doña, also a period story. TVN, the great producer of telenovelas in Chile, the books of which are adapted by Telemundo with great success, is now producing not just for primetime but also for the afternoon block, which was traditionally reserved

for foreign telenovelas. Its first project is Esperanza which, unlike evening telenovelas, exploits the classic melodrama

Meanwhile in Ecuador, Ecuavisa is producing a telenovela for next year.

Multi-platforM productAnother proof of the demand for the telenovela is that it is requested on platforms such as VOD and streaming video. In fact, Netflix, which announced it would launch in Latin America at the end of the year, has already acquired several telenovelas from Televisa, Azteca, Caracol, Telefe, Tele-mundo, and Dori Media, so far.

Caracol and SPT already co-produced in 2010 Amar y temer, a series written by Dago García and produced by Juana Uribe. The companies have now agreed to co-produce two series per year for primetime.

Additionally, Caracol will produce local versions of formats from the SPT catalog. Both signals will share worldwide distribution. Carlos Alejandro Pérez-Dávila, President of Caracol Televisión; and Donna Cunningham, General Director and Executive VP of Production for Latin America and U.S. Hispanic of SPT, signed the agreement.

“It is the union of two entertain-ment leaders in the region, that focuses on big-time production. For Caracol, it is a vote of confi-

dence on the part of Sony, which believes in our projects, our processes and the talent of our people,” said to PRODU, Angélica Guerra, International VP of Caracol.

HigHer standardsSome of the channel’s producers said the alliance requires compliance with the highest quality standards.

Juan Carlos Villamizar, producer of the series Los canarios, said: “We need to abide to the highest international standards of quality. Our work, our talent and our stories will be brought to other audiences and that demands a higher standard.”

Manuel Peñalosa, General Producer of El secretario, said this partnership not only involves the

quality of the stories, for which they are well known, but it requires a level playing field from the technical point of view. To this end Caracol has great resources and is in constant moderniza-tion. He believes there will be great optimization of work considering they will produce about 600 hours in three years.

Assier Aguilar, Director of Production of Caracol TV, said the deal affects them positively, because now they are forced to offer better products with the latest technology. He added that Caracol has always used 90% Sony technology.

La primera damaLa primera dama will be the first co-production under the new agreement.

“It is a Chilean book where, for the first time, the leading lady will not fight for love but for power. It is a character based on post-modern values: she wants everything now. Since La bruja, we started creating more interesting products, stories never before brought to the screen, with plots that do not have a love story at it core,” said Aguilar to PRODU.

La primera dama stars Christian Meier and the young actress from Cali Karina Cruz. Germán Porras and Andrés Marroquín direct it. The original story by UC13 was sold to Caracol by Latin Media, the company of José Escalante.

El hombre de tu vida combines several noteworthy ingredients. First, it is directed by an interna-tionally recognized professional: Juan José Campanella, who directs episodes of series of the caliber of House and Law and Order: SVU, and who directed El secreto de sus ojos, winner of the 2010 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.

Other ingredients include the first-class cast led by Guillermo Francella -who also acted in El secreto de sus ojos- Mercedes Morán and Luis Brandoni; along with brilliant scripts that have been 10 months in the making, and top of-the-line camera equipment, the same used to

shoot El secreto de sus ojos and series such as House.

Each episode has taken seven days of production almost entirely on location. For that reason the series premiered with 10 episodes already produced.

All these elements combined to give the series the lead on Sundays’ primetime. It premiered on July 17th at 10pm as the most watch program of its time slot and of the season, averaging 27.4 points (peaking at 29 points) and 53% share. It has since consis-tently registered ratings oscillat-ing between 21 and 22 points. It was a great achievement for Telefe because El hombre de tu

vida knocked off El Trece’s Los únicos and El puntero, which had been leading Sundays’ primetime.

The premiere of Cuando me sonreís was also successful. This romantic comedy airs Monday through Friday at 10pm. It is co-produced with RGB and it stars Facundo Arana and Julieta Díaz. On its debut on Wednesday the 3rd, it registered 19 points in homes and was the most watched show for channel that day. It placed second in its time slot and fourth in the most watched shows ranking of the season.

More fictionCTV Contenidos, headed by renowned actor and director

Gabriel Corrado, is a multimedia company that specializes in the production of fiction and entertain-ment content and formats, with operations in Argentina and Spain. Telefe will distribute all its fiction formats exclusively.

Some of the telenovela formats include Amores cruzados, Escuela de seducción, Amor eterno, Gigoló and Pueblo chico. Corrado also produced the telenovela Narcisa Salbatica, which airs successfully on Antena 1 of Romania. “ CTV Contenidos was born from the need to tell stories, to excite, entertain and inspire people to dream,” said Corrado.

La que no podía amar is the new project of José Alberto Castro, following his hit Teresa. This new telenovela is remake of Monte Calvario starring Ana Brenda Contreras and José Ron, the leading couple in Juro que te amo. The story is based on the radionovela La mujer que no sabe amar by Delia Fiallo. La que no podía amar airs on Canal de las Estrellas at 7pm, and has become an audience favorite.

Dos hogares, is produced by Emilio Larrosa, who also produced Muchachitas como tú and Hasta que el dinero nos separe.

InvestIng In comedyWith Amorcito corazón, produced by Lucero Suárez, Televisa continues investing in comedy.

“My job in life is to let people have fun, to allow them to sit in front of the TV and forget about their problems for a moment. In comedy you don’t have to be funny, you just have to be a good actor. There is no innuendo in my telenovelas, it’s not the kind of stories I do,” said Suárez.

Amorcito corazón is an adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela Trapos íntimos, and came up after working an original project in which production only completed

10 episodes in 6 months. “Since we ran out of time to finish it and they were asking us for a story to air, we started writing this project in January,” she added.

The six-month season of Amor-cito corazón has 300 thirty-minute episodes and will air on Canal de las Estrellas at 6:15pm.

daytIme blockWith Esperanza del corazón, starring Bianca Marroquín, Televisa seeks to reinforce its daytime (4pm), catering to families.

“We all would want to be in primetime, but a good telenovela

is successful anywhere. We want this time slot to be popular again. In time, we want to elevate ratings and evolve into an evening slot,” said Luis De Llano, who is now in charge of this new production.

He also pointed out that although free TV in Mexico is losing ground to pay TV content (series are becoming the new trend in television), telenovelas are still essential to Mexican viewers. “They will never cease to exist. They won’t disappear because they are an everyday necessity,” added De Llano.

Doña Bárbara, based on the novel by the same name by Rómulo Gallegos; Ojo por ojo, based on Leopardo al sol by Laura Restrepo; La reina del sur, based on the book by Arturo Pérez-Reverte; and Flor salvaje, a recent production based on the novel La novia oscura, also by Laura Restrepo; are the feature titles of Telemundo Internacional which have found in literature what the industry is looking for: a good story to captivate audiences.
