Introduction:

Dr. Shook talks about his experience with his personal health problems that started when

he was twelve. He struggled with IBS, psoriasis and many other problems. Trying to find best

way to help himself, he became interested in health and fitness. After 20 years of struggling with

IBS and all his other health problems, and after making many mistakes during that process, he

began learning more about the drivers of disease process and natural approaches to supporting

inflammatory conditions and autoimmunity. He was diagnosed with psoriasis, and researched

the causes of autoimmune conditions, and that is when he discovered that there are numerous

causes and drivers of the autoimmune process. Instead treating symptoms, he wanted to figure

out what was causing the problems, and this is what started his formal training in functional

medicine.

He is Board Certified Integrative Medicine. Integrative Medicine looks at different types

of healing disciplines and tries to bring the best of them together to help people achieve the best

health possible. Dr. Shook studied, and continues to study hundreds of hours in functional

diagnostic medicine which looks for the drivers or causes of disease processes. He is also a

Board Certified Chiropractic Physician with 8 years of education including 4 years of pre-

medicine, including studies in organic chemistry, physics, anatomy, physiology, endocrinology,

immunology, Inflammatory and Autoimmune Signaling Systems, neuroanatomy, biochemistry,

thyroid physiology and many more. He has spent 8 years working one-on-one with people that

have Hashimoto's and he has significant experience and insight as a result of his clinical practice

and personal experience. He leads "The Greater Hickory Thyroid Support Group” on Facebook

with over 2800 members. Dr. Shook works with clients in his office and offers distance

consulting to clients across US and in other countries through phone and skype appointments.

When people come to his office Dr. Shook utilizes numerous dietary variations and nutritional

supplementation programs depending on the needs of the person.

The initial dietary approach Dr. Shook uses most commonly focuses on decreasing

inflammation, balancing blood sugar, improving gut health and dampening autoimmunity. The

key to helping most people significantly improve their thyroid health and improve autoimmunity

is that you have to consider the individuality of the person. One size fits all programs often do

not work, and this is why Dr. Shook created these programs, because they allow for assistance

and a more customized approach which is critical.

After 6 to 12 weeks the next step is usually focused on balancing hormones, increasing energy,

Judy: “I came to Dr. Shook because I have hashimoto’s, hypothyroidism, type II diabetes,

swelling in my legs, liver problems, high blood pressure and I wanted to get off the medications I

was using. After I came to Dr. Shook, and after going on a special diet and supplements, now I

have no problem with swelling and leg pain, I think much clearer, my blood pressure has gone

down. Now I am able to travel, I couldn't ride in a car or in a bus before because of the swelling.

Now I can go up and down the stairs without a cane.”

In first 3 months Judy lost about 30 pounds, and keep in mind, this is not a weight loss

retention improved significantly. When she came to our office, she had type II diabetes. After 6

months, when we rechecked her labs, she had no diabetes, she lost 61 pounds in total, and her

replacement and blood pressure medications.

This is a cross-section of the intestinal tract. Dr. Shook showed us how a normal GI

barrier works.

This slide demonstrated how foods, chemicals, medicines, and stress can breakdown he GI

barrier and cause intestinal permeability and “Leaky Gut.”

He explains why the gluten is the worst food to eat if you are dealing with Hashimoto's.

He points to the main reasons why gluten has such a bad reputation. This is because it

causes strong immune responses, promotes intestinal permeability in everyone, even people that

are not gluten sensitive. Theoretically, no one should consume gluten. Also, gluten mimics TPO

and could trigger an immune response.

Dr. Shook explains the occurrence of molecular mimicry. Your immune system can have

an immune response to gluten, and produce antibodies that will attach to gluten. The antibodies

mark gluten as a foreign invader so that other immune cells can attack and destroy it.

Thyroid tissue can have a similar shape to the gluten protein molecule. When this happens the

antibody mistakenly recognizes the thyroid tissue as a dangerous foreign molecule and attacks it.

This is the concept of molecular mimicry.

To explain how the supplements could make you worse by stimulating the immune

system, Dr. Shook talks about 2 types of blood cells.

The first type are TH1 cells which immediately and quickly respond to a foreign molecules.

The other type are TH2 cells, which work through a humoral, blood response, which can happen

up to 3 days later. It gives memory to the immune system.

Th3 system balances these two types of cells, and in a well-regulated immune system,

this system produces regulatory T-cells.

When taking supplements, you can have immune polarization due to the compounds in the

supplements.

TH1 or TH2 cells can become very high and dominant, which in turn, stimulate the TH17

system, that results in and causes massive inflammation and tissue destruction.

There are some common immune stimulants found in supplements and foods we eat.

They can stimulate the production of TH1 and TH2 cells.
