Our SpeakersMolly Rector joined Quantum as Vice President, Global Marketing in September 2016. She has more than 15 years of enterprise storage experience, including 12 years as a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). From January 2014 to September 2016, she served as CMO and Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and Product Management at DataDirect Networks, a high performance computing (HPC) and data intensive enterprise storage provider. Prior to that, Rector spent ten years as CMO and Executive Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Product Management at Spectra Logic, an archive storage vendor. She also founded the Active Archive Alliance, an industry coalition formed to educate end users on the evolving new technologies that enable reliable, online and efficient access to archived data.

Our SpeakersDave Frederick is the Senior Director of Media and Entertainment for Quantum Corp. For the last 30 years, Dave has focused on leveraging technology to improve media production and delivery. Since joining Quantum in 2014, he has been working to bring the benefits of multi-tiered, high-performance shared storage to use cases ranging from entertainment, corporate video, imaging, video surveillance and more. Dave’s approach: Infrastructure is important, but it must never come between the user and their applications.

Polling QuestionWhat is your primary source of unstructured data?

Page 8: Webinar: End NAS Sprawl - Gain Control Over Unstructured Data

• Most IT Professionals know that Unstructured Data is Growing

• What’s New - Unprecedented• The rate of growth• The variety of data types• The quantity of files / objects• The need to use / re-use this data

• Data analytics to build new business and research opportunities

The Unstructured Data Problem - It’s More Than Just Data Growth

Page 9: Webinar: End NAS Sprawl - Gain Control Over Unstructured Data

As A Service

• Storing it WAS the big Challenge• Storing it “relatively” easy today but difficult to do within budget

• Today Unstructured Data needs to be:• Streamed and accessed rapidly

• Seamlessly accessible by a variety of users across a variety of storage devices and location

• Securely shared beyond the boundaries of the firewall

• Preserved (not just stored) for decades

Unstructured Data Then And Now

Page 10: Webinar: End NAS Sprawl - Gain Control Over Unstructured Data

Impact Of Modern Unstructured Data• A Storage System for every occasion

• High Performance Block and NAS Access

• High Capacity NAS and S3

• Compliance / Regulatory

• Private Cloud (Object Storage)

• Public Cloud

• Most Cloud Providers have 4 classes of storage service

• The Result - NAS Sprawl

Page 11: Webinar: End NAS Sprawl - Gain Control Over Unstructured Data

As A Service

• Data centers have dozens of systems storing Unstructured Data

• A new type of NAS is purchased for each use case• And the new number of use cases are expanding

• Within each use case additional NAS are bought as the first NAS reaches limitations

Understanding NAS Sprawl

Page 12: Webinar: End NAS Sprawl - Gain Control Over Unstructured Data

The Impact Of NAS Sprawl

• Capital Expensive

• Operationally Expensive

• Technologically Limiting

• Data can’t be accessed and identified across storage types

Page 13: Webinar: End NAS Sprawl - Gain Control Over Unstructured Data

The Cause Of NAS Sprawl

• It’s not the Hardware

• The hardware is all (basically) the same

• It’s the Software

• Specifically, it’s the file system

Page 14: Webinar: End NAS Sprawl - Gain Control Over Unstructured Data

The Problems The File Systems Cause• They are too myopic

• Most file systems are focused on one use case

• Some only preserve, some only perform

• May reach file count and object limits rapidly in today’s large unstructured data environments

Page 15: Webinar: End NAS Sprawl - Gain Control Over Unstructured Data

The Problems The File Systems Cause• They are too silo’ed

• Work within the confines of one storage system (even scale out)

• Work with only one hardware type

• They do not incorporate multiple geographic locations and data in the cloud

• They don’t enable mobility• May tier (flash to HDD) within a single system

• But not flash to HDD to Object to Cloud to Tape

Page 16: Webinar: End NAS Sprawl - Gain Control Over Unstructured Data

• A Single File System that Delivers• High Performance access and streaming performance

• A true Global File System• Presents a single namespace across NAS, Object, Tape, Cloud

• Delivers High Performance metadata for analytics and fast streaming

• Delivers performance for both standard file data as well as rich media images and video

• And...a system that can preserve data for decades

The Modern Data Center Needs A Modern File System

StorNext Refresher

1. Scale-out, Parallel, File System– Shared, high-performance, highly scalable file system– Allows applications, layered above a StorNext client to access a shared pool of storage– Clients can attach to StorNext using SAN (FC) or network protocols (IP, CIFS, NFS)

2. Storage Manager – Policy-driven data management of vast storage archives– Allows users to oversubscribe the capacity of their StorNext file system storage– Storage destinations range from tape and disk, to object storage and cloud services– Administrators can easily create and customize data management policies
