Dear Friends,

We’re learning lots of things during construction. One of them is that our addition of a sprinkler system in the main building is a really good thing—over the years, we’ve needed to access the area above the dropped ceiling for additions and normal repair work, consequently degrading our fire protection. When we move back in, it will be to a much safer building.

We’ve been the beneficiaries of a wonderful team in this process. DTW Architects & Planners, Ltd. and C.T. Wilson construction meet with us each week to walk through the work for that week, as

well as to continue to plan for scheduled work in the months ahead.

Two members of the team you should know are Peter Hausmann and Zak Hamlett. Peter came to a vocation in commercial construction through a somewhat circuitous route—ordained ministry. A Teaching Elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),

Peter was co-pastor at Blacknall Presbyterian Church when they embarked upon a building project. At the end of it, he asked C.T. Wilson for a job. Having a project manager who is familiar with the church generally, and a Presbyterian church specifically, is a wonderful asset. Our site manager, Zak, is already a friend to many at UPC. Zak is a member at Cane Creek Baptist Church and a veteran of many joint Appalachia Service Project trips with UPC. His father was one of the first to sign-on to the project and has only missed a handful of trips over the years.

As we move worship to the Fellowship Hall, the nursery to Vance Barron Hall and look to the start of Church School utilizing only the first-floor classrooms, we welcome your assistance. We’ll do our best to keep you informed through announcements, The Chimes and the Weekly E-News, but we’re also hoping you will help us get the word out to visitors. In the weeks ahead, we’ll need additional volunteers to be present throughout the building to direct people (including a few who can stand in front of the Sanctuary to welcome folks). If you are willing to help, please let me know.

And, if you see someone you don’t know, take a deep breath and introduce yourself. You may end up introducing yourself to a long-time member, maybe a member you should know. But, maybe it’s a visitor, whose first introduction to this congregation will be You.

This time of transition can be a bit chaotic and unsettling, but it can also be a time to grow in discipleship, sharing faith with those we encounter on the way, through the way that we live and the way that we welcome. I’m thankful to be on this journey with you.

Peace,

Our Church Family

The UPC congregation and its pastors

take seriously the call to pray and be

present with those who are in need, so

we encourage you, a friend or a family

member to let us know if you have

scheduled surgery or have been admitted

to the hospital. During the week, please

call the church office at (919) 929-2102,

and over the weekend, please call one of

the pastors. Thank you.

“Are any among you sick? They

should call for the elders of the

church and have them pray over

them, anointing them with oil in the

name of the Lord,” James 5:14.

Due to privacy concerns and HIPAA laws,

there are no notifications or lists at any

local hospitals or clinics which would in-

Preschool (UPPS)

UPPS is excited to announce that our Website has been updated! Please visit

www.upps-ch.com and check it out! We believe the new Website better re-

flects the warmth and personality of the preschool and our staff and that it

will be useful for families who are looking for a preschool experience for

their children.

For our enrolled families, we will be testing out a new web communication

tool to help disseminate information and dates to our parents in a more effi-

cient manner. We think our families will really appreciate the automatic re-

minders for events and sign-ups, as well as a feature that can push these dates

to their smart phone calendars. The internal site is by invitation only so we

will be able to post photos and class specific information, too!

Also new next year, Lib Ferguson will be joining our staff as a co-teacher in

the Two Year Old classroom. Lib was a recurring substitute for us last year,

and the staff was very impressed with her great experience and warm interac-

tions with the chil-

dren! Lib joins lead

teacher, Alison Smith, in working with the youngest students at UPPS.

Welcome to the team, Lib!

We look forward to another great year at UPPS! Thank you.

Summer Sermon Ser ies Cont inues This month, we continue a series of sermons called “Jesus said.” Do you believe in Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ the Word made

flesh? Jesus Christ the peacemaker? Jesus Christ the rabble rouser? Jesus Christ the Son of God? Jesus Christ the poor carpen-

ter? Jesus Christ the leader? Jesus Christ the servant? Jesus Christ the Savior? This summer, we’re exploring some of the things

Jesus said in an attempt to get to know Him better.

Below is the sermon schedule through August 17:

August 3: “Jesus said: Father, Forgive Them”

August 10: “Jesus said: You Do Not Know”

August 17: “Jesus said: Follow Me!”

University Presbyterian Preschool is a half-day early childhood program serving two-to five-year old children. The preschool

provides a safe and nurturing environment while promoting the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of

young children. At UPPS, our goals are to encourage children to develop good self-concepts, to promote concern for the com-

plete child: emotionally, socially, intellectually, and physically, to provide opportunities to develop each child’s uniqueness while

providing an opportunity for the child to function well in a group, and to engender excitement about participating in school

and for learning.

Until Sunday, August 10, our nursery is located in Room 226 on the upstairs hallway near the parking lot end (usually the 5th

grade classroom). To get there from the Sanctuary, leave through the doors on the font side. Walk down the hall, and you’ll run

directly into it. When worship moves to the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, August 10, the nursery will be moved again to Vance

Barron Hall.

Our Nurser y Has Moved for the Summer

Renova t ions a t UPC Cont inue

There has been a change in our

construction schedule! Worship in

the Fellowship Hall is now scheduled

to begin Sunday, August 10. During

this time, the Sanctuary will be closed.

Until Sunday, August 10, we still do

not have access to the Fellowship Hall

and Landing and the Memorial Gar-

den. The following areas are also cur-

rently off limits: the Campus Ministry wing and the entire downstairs portion of the building, including the Youth Center,

Garden Room, Nursery (new location—see below), all classrooms, Fellowship Hall kitchen, and the Stephen Ministry Room.

Note that we cannot use the entrances and exits at Henderson St., the Youth Center or the entrance going directly onto the

playground. You may enter and exit the building at the parking lot door (and go up the stairs). Until Sunday, August 10, you

may enter the doors at the front and side of the Sanctuary (the front is an accessible entrance on Sundays only).

Please check the bulletin announcements and Weekly E-News

each week for additional updates. To sign up for Weekly E-News,

visit the church’s Website at www.upcch.org and click

“Subscribe to E-News” from the bottom of the page.

As construction continues at University Presbyterian Church, we

strive to stay flexible and patient. We’re counting on our mem-

bers to do so, as well. During this time, we are very grateful to

have such a wonderful congregation!

During the week, we’ll need to have parking spots set aside for the construction crew and their materials. All of the middle

parking spaces in the Robertson Lane lot will be reserved Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.

to 5:30 p.m. There will be a few visitor spots available next to the church build-

ing, but those will be the only non-reserved parking spots during construction.

If you need to come to the church during the day, please plan to park in the

parking deck at 150 East Rosemary Street, or call in advance to see if there are

any other spots available.

Above the Affluence All Youth Retreat - Montreat, NC

November 7 - 9

Most of our youth have grown up in a world where the latest technology, safe homes, the best health care and an incredi-ble education are all part of every day life. But what are we expected to DO with all of our abundance? How do we stretch our comfort zones to live a life that answers to a calling above the affluent norms of our culture? What do scrip-ture and our life of faith have to say about it? We’ll tackle these questions and more at our annual Presbyterian Youth Connection Retreat from November 7-9, 2014 in Montreat!

We’ll also enjoy an ice cream party; Saturday afternoon events like hiking Lookout Mountain, ultimate Frisbee and crafts; worship, keynotes, energizers and music; and spending a wonderful weekend in the mountains with your PYC friends! Registration forms will be online soon and are due with the fee of $150 by September 28. Scholarships are availa-ble. Contact Kim McNeill, Staff Associate for Youth and Congregational Life, at [email protected] with any questions.

Appalachia Service Projec t On July 13-19, 57 volunteers from University Presbyterian and Cane Creek Baptist joined together to serve in Wautaga County, NC and Johnson County, TN with Appalachia Service Project (ASP).

We spent our week helping to make homes in rural Appalachia warmer, safer and drier. Our work crews added steps to make safe exits for families. They repaired and re-structured roofs, re-did floors, added insulation, painted, sheetrocked, put up siding and much more!

Our volunteer group was exactly half youth and half adults making for an inter-generational effort like no other! UPC has been partnering with the good folks at Cane Creek Baptist for over 20 years to offer a hand to those in rural Appalachia. Our bond with one another continues to grow, and each year, we find great joy in working alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ.

To volunteer for next year’s trip, email Kim McNeill at [email protected].

Presbyter ian Campus Minis t r y (PCM) Seems like the old phrase “ready or not” is more fitting this year than most. It’s hard to think of all the things that have been done to PCM’s space, Website and program planning in order to be prepared for our students’ arrival and return this month. It’s always with great anticipation that we enter into the month of August. The sadness of graduating a big class has dimmed to give way for new students to invest in!

UNC classes will start on Tuesday, August 19, and although we will be worship-ing in the Fellowship Hall and possibly in a temporary program space, none of

this will squelch the joy we have for our students. Our congregation always does a great job welcoming them, but I would like to encourage everyone to greet these students with the open arms of Christ, and remind them of our ministry at 110 Hender-son Street—a ministry that seeks to be a community that will help them grow into God’s call upon their lives.

~John Rogers, Associate Pastor for Campus Ministry

A Message f rom John Rogers and Fami ly It has been an overwhelming joy over these past three months, not just wel-

coming Cate into our lives in the Rogers family, but how her birth has given

space for us to see God’s grace in your love, support and participation in her

birth. Long before Cate is baptized, our UPC and PCM families have held her,

welcomed her and are living signs of God’s kingdom—be it through your vis-

its, meals or notes. Thank you for loving our family and being part of Christ’s

body who have shared in this joy together!

Sometimes, faith is the evidence of things not seen, but some-

times, hope becomes concrete, taking shape before our eyes.

For two of our long time partners in Haiti, these are those

times. Our partners in St. Joseph’s Family continue their work

providing homes and a family for kids from the streets and

disabled children and adults in a nation where that sadly is not

always the norm. The 2010 earthquake dealt them a serious

blow, destroying two of their three facilities, but with the help

of friends and partners around the world, they are rising from

the ashes better than ever.

This spring the

UPC team got

a chance to

stay in the new

St. Joseph’s

home for Boys

in the suburbs

of Port au

Prince, a facili-

ty the rebuild-

ing of which was supported by our congregation through a

major donation from the McFadden Endowment. We also

had a chance to visit the current Wings of Hope home for dis-

abled children and adults, a makeshift facility pulled together

after the earthquake, but most exciting, to visit the site of the

new Wings facility, now under construction in Jacmel. This

state-of-the-art facility will transform the lives of the residents

and staff, allowing the loving care already present to be provid-

ed in a wonderful new building custom-designed to serve the

needs of the residents. Once again, UPC has been able to help

with a major donation from the tithe of your contributions

from the Faith Forward Capital Campaign. We hope to visit the

new facility in action when construction is complete. You can

see pictures on the St. Joseph Family, Haiti Facebook page at

http://goo.gl/05Xpvk. This page is always good if you need a

smile on a bad day, and the pictures of the annual beach trip

are out of this world!

Our long-term partners at Family Health Ministries also are

seeing hope become concrete in many ways. This past year,

their path-breaking efforts to diagnose and treat cervical can-

cer in Haiti, funded by the Clinton-Bush Fund, led to wide-

spread attention. They were featured in the New York Times

Magazine, published their research findings in PLoS One, and

presented their work to the Haitian Ministry of Health as a

model for how to expand this effort across the nation. While

their Blanchard Clinic, which the UPC team visited in the

spring, continues to provide both regular health care and HPV

screening, they are about to begin construction on two new

facilities. The Carmelle Voltaire Women’s Health Center is

expected to open in early 2015 in the rural mountain commu-

nity of Tome Gato. Construction of the project will be ac-

complished in partnership with the Building Goodness Foun-

dation. This facility will be staffed by skilled birth attendants

and those women needing more advanced care will be trans-

ported to the surgical facility in Leogane. The Leogane Family

Health Center will be a preventative healthcare complex serv-

ing those without access to basic care for providing patient-

care, teaching and research. The first phase in this project is

expected to break ground soon, and once again, UPC provided

seed money through the McFadden Endowment. All this

news and more is available on FHM’s brand new and very im-

pressive Website at www.familyhealthministries.org.

Your generosity in good times and bad helps make all of this

possible. It is your faith made visible, and our partners are

grateful.

On the day I sit down to write this update, we find ourselves half way through the summer season. While it is hard to believe, things have gone swimmingly this summer! The staff has worked like a well-oiled machine. The number of children who have come to us through the weeks has been great. Smiles and laughter have abounded. Science and nature have found many crea-tures to explore. Arts and crafts has kept many hands busy. The newest field-game here at camp has entertained for hours on end, and the pool has been wet and cool. All that remains to be said is that it is shaping up to be a great summer at New Hope. Come join us if you get a chance. The t-shirt says “Come See the Fun, Be the Fun.” Give it a try; you will not be disappointed.

Our new after school program has started! We will put our new bus—new to us—to work. Watch us grow the program!

I’d also like to talk about one thing we need. The camp is in need of a pickup truck with a few miles left on it. If you are getting ready to trade one in, or if you have an extra one taking up space in your driveway, please consider a donation. We will give it a good home.
