FOOD FOR ALL TASMANIANS GRANTS PROGRAM: Successful applications

Among the successful applicants for the $1 million to be provided through the Food For All Tasmanians Grants Program, there were two major statewide initiatives and 14 regional initiatives.

Able Australia (on behalf of the Feeding the Future Local Produce Guild)

Feeding the Future Working with schools, neighbourhood and community houses, the Tasmanian Government, charitable and not-for-profit organisations to increase collaboration between Emergency Food Relief providers, food distributors and food producers to improve State coverage and access for consumers.

Secondbite Food Programs Tasmania

To establish additional food distribution hubs in Launceston and Kingborough and deliver further SecondBite nutrition plan food training programs.

NorthBridport & Ringarooma Primary Schools Associations

Mulching Munchkins To connect children and their families’ to low cost nutritious food through soil preparation, mulching, composting, planting, food preparation, farm maintenance and animal husbandry, and through a curriculum which is designed to address the needs of a school in a rural/remote municipality.

Ravenswood Neighbourhood House

Growing Together A Food Co-op within the Neighbourhood House will provide fresh food for the community connecting with local growers. A series of ‘Pop Up BBQs’ will feature healthy vegetarian food with pulse protein and provide growing medium and seeds to the community. Helping neighbours develop vegetable patches in their own back yards.

West and/or North WestDevonport City Council

Feeding Our Future and Heaven’s Kitchen

These two major programs will include provision of fruit and vegetable boxes to community house users and surrounding residents, expansion of current community kitchen to provide training in healthy food preparation to marginalised low income individuals and families, and learning opportunities.

Recipient Initiative DescriptionNorth West Environment Centre

Closing the gaps - Wynyard Community Food Collaboration

Working with schools, the Tasmanian Government, charitable and not-for-profit organisations, this project will provide practical opportunities for low socio-economic families, people with disability, and unemployed peole in the Wynyard area to gain the skills and confidence to grow their own vegetables and to cook and/or preserve fresh fruits and vegetables. It will also establish a Neighbourhood Supported Agriculture project and trading of local food through the Community Exchange North-West Tasmania project.

Rural Health Tasmania Inc.

Sow and reap, a community garden experience

Working with the Indigenous community, community centres, the Tasmanian Government, charitable and not-for-profit organisations, this initiative will establish a working garden and propagating orchard in a public housing area of Circular Head. Community members will be provided with opportunities to become multi skilled in gardening, harvesting, cooking and the preservation of food. There will also be opportunities for social eating and other community activities.

Youth and Family Focus Inc

Veggie Patch Working with councils, neighbourhood and community houses, the Tasmanian Government, charitable and not-for-profit organisations, up to 80 job placement participants will build and maintain ‘Veggie Gardens‘ in up to 120 private gardens across the whole North West region so that older people, low income families, children and individuals can enjoy the health benefits of having easy access to fresh and nutritious home grown vegetables.

Rosebury District High School

Growing, learning, eating - Rosebury school and community farm

Community organisatyions will work with the School to expand the horticulture centre to increase production of vegetables in green and shade houses, and to add animal pens to keep chickens, goats and quail as livestock. The additional produce will expand the School’s capacity to host community outreach events with the Rosebery Community House.

MidlandsOatlands District High School

Community Garden This project will see the development of a community garden within the Oatlands District High School grounds. Other spaces within the school are being prepared to enable the community garden to expand into the future, ensuring sustainability of the project and providing all students from 0-16 years of age a lifelong skill. It will also build community links and provide elderly community members with an opportunity to share their knowledge with our students.

South

Recipient Initiative DescriptionClarence City Council

Food Connections Clarence (FCC Project)

Working with more than a dozen partners,this project will improve increase the network of community ‘hubs’ across the City, establish a healthy social eating network, increasing food supply to hubs, and establish programs targeting older customers and ‘food deserts’, through younger volunteers, including students.

Connecting Families & School Communities Glenora District High School

Grow Cook Eat Working with up to four local schools and other organisations to create up to 50 raised garden beds for families in the community, plant 20 assorted fruit trees at two schools, and deliver a range of learning opportunities.

Colony 47 Food @ Home Food @ Home will empower clients by building life skills in growing and maintaining fresh, nutritious vegetables. Food @ Home will provide clients with the opportunity to build on their gardening skills in a supportive environment. These skills can later be transferred to the long-term tenancies clients move into in the future.

The Link Youth Health Service

10 meals for 10 dollars

This initiative will work with young people to provide education on the preparation of affordable and nutritional meals, build and enhance links and partnerships with community service agencies and food supply chain, and better utilise and re-distribute the current food supply that is being accessed from distributors and expand the range of suppliers including community gardens.

The Bream Creek Farmers' Market Inc.

The Bream Creek Farmers' Market

The Bream Creek Farmers’ Market will provide a friendly local market to deliver fresh food to the community. The Market will be held on the first Sunday of each month at the Bream Creek Showground. The half day market will provide a venue for growers, cooks, gardeners and food producers from the target area and around Tasmania to showcase their produce.

Okines Community House

Food for the Future Working with up to nine partners to deliver emergency food relief, a breakfast club and ‘Eating with Friends’ programs. Links will be strengthened with the local school and community to deliver learning opportunities and food for those in need.
