Esther LaMothe Lions Clubs International Director 2013-2015

Over 300,000 air miles, 35 states and 6 countries represents Lion Esthers two years on the Lions Clubs International Board of Directors. What a whirlwind of activities these two years brought.

The journey began in Hamburg, Germany in July 2013 when Lion Esther, PDG Gary and Lion Linda Babcock traveled to Hamburg for the International Convention and the final step for Esthers election to the board. She left Michigan as our candidate and returned home as our International Director.

LCI has a policy where single Directors, like Esther, may have an official travel companion. The requirements are that it can only be one companion for the year; he/she must be a Lion in good standing from a club in good standing; and be willing to participate in all activities. A director may submit a request to the International President to have this companion approved and once approved, he/she is treated the same as a spouse for expenses and hospitality. Lion Linda Babcock has been her travel companion for the last two years, helping and supporting her with every visit and board meeting. Lindas husband, PDG Gary, has been the chauffeur driving them back and forth to Detroit Metro Airport. All he has to do is put Esthers car on auto pilot!

After Germany, the first board meeting was in Australia, home of PIP Barry Palmer. The other board meetings were in San Diego and Toronto. This year found the Board in Arizona, Prague and will finish in Hawaii. Board meetings are serious business and the Directors work very hard on your behalf. Esther chaired the Leadership Development Committee this year for IP Preston and was on the committee last year for PIP Palmer. She also served on the Family and Women Action Committee, whose goal is to increase female membership and leadership as well as help with social service projects.

In Prague, Lion Esther received the Ambassador of Good Will Award in a palace.hard to top that! Lion Linda became a Melvin Jones Fellow and received her plague from PIP Palmer and IP Preston. Both very memorable events.

Over the course of the two years, many friendships worldwide were made. Lions everywhere do so many wonderful things in their communities and in the world.

Lion Esther has been humbled by this experience and forever grateful to the Lions of Michigan and the world for giving her this opportunity.

Following in the footsteps of PID Bill Hansen and PID Gary Anderson, Lion Esther is asking that in lieu of any formal celebration of her service, that individuals donate to a state project of their choice in her name.

Following Hawaii, Lion Esther plans to spend time with her sons in Kentucky and Las Vegas and to return to her Michigan Lions, whom she has missed these past two years, and to resume her many community volunteer opportunities.

Congratulations, International Director Esther LaMothe, for a job well done!

Executive Directors Pride

With the 2014-15 Lions year quickly coming to a close, Lions can be proud of their many accomplishments. To re-cap what has been a very busy year: Lions recorded 3,571 activities, providing over 85,000 hours of service to nearly 32,000 people. In addition, 46,940 pairs of eyeglasses were supplied, 1,976 trees planted and $700,000.00 in donated funds. Lions were able to help 1,113 people receive the Gift of Sight; supported 559 campers at Lions Bear Lake Camp; helped with KidSight screenings across the state, and supported fundraising efforts for Leader Dogs for the Blind Canine Development Project.

Can we surpass these accomplishments in the coming year? Absolutely! The 2015-2016 International Theme: Dignity, Harmony, Humanity, will be your guide. Dignity through Humanitarian Service and Harmony through Cultural Exchange and Joint Global Projects. A beautiful theme to carry out not only in our clubs, but within ourselves. Peace, hope, determination, teamwork and uniting people through service are central elements of this years presidential them.

Your leadership team is ready to take on the challenge beginning July 1, and Lions will be ready to make 2015-16 a year of record-breaking growth, service, fun and fellowship.

Yours in Service,

Lion Wendy Burns, Executive Director

Another Great Lionistic Year ~Council Chair Jim Pettinato

It is absolutely amazing the things we accomplish as Lions. From providing glasses to a person in need all the way to eye surgery we cover it all with little or no financial assistance from the recipient.

Summer camps for the visually and hearing impaired is such a wonderful experience for them and you can hear their laughter from a long way away. Think what their summer would be like without these opportunities.

So how does all this happen? It happens because we are Lions and we provide the necessary resources to provide these services to those less advantaged than us.

Do we do it for recognition? No way, we do it because there is a need and we are Lions.

Our motto We Serve is much more than a motto it becomes the way we live our lives and influences all aspects of our daily routine.

It has been a pleasure serving the Lions of Michigan as the 2014 2015 Council Chairperson and you had a great group of Governors making this a fantastic year for us and all the people we serve in Michigan.

Lauraine and I wish you the best as you continue to serve those in need in your community, State and around the world.

Isnt it Great To Be A Lion!!!!!!!!

Jim Pettinato, Council Chair

SAVE THE DATE!

2015 Lions Leadership/Graduate Institute- November 13-15, 2015

The Lions Leadership Institute is a unique opportunity for individuals to learn and develop lifelong leadership skills, which can be applied to their job, their Lions Club, and their life.

Training equips Lions with the motivation, knowledge and skills to ensure that a high level of service is provided. It develops more leaders, and more leaders translate into greater service. Training makes Lions more effective.

Attending the Leadership Institute gives participants the tools and confidence to become more effective leaders. The skills learned can be applied to their job, their Lions Club and their everyday lives.

Participants learn key components of team building. By sharing ideas, success stories and humanitarian endeavors, Lions learn how to influence membership and become more open-minded and receptive to change.

How will the institute improve Michigan Lionism?

The Leadership Institute provides each district with a pool of trained leaders. Lionism is also improved by creating more responsive and dynamic Lions Clubs throughout Michigan.

Become Your Best Train with the Best!

CLUB OF THE MONTH ROMEO DISTRICT 11 A2

The Romeo Lions membership, which is currently sitting at 84 members, would like to thank District Governor Tom Hill for naming us the Club of the Year for District 11-A2. As a club, we couldnt be more honored to receive this recognition! The foundation of our club is strong having started in 1942 and has been motivated by the motto We Serve ever since. Thankfully we are the host and organizers of the Michigan Peach Festival which is entering its 84th year! This Labor Day weekend festival allows us the opportunity to meet the Governors goals each year, to support local families in our community, to host an annual Christmas Party for children of less fortunate families (this year 45 families equalling 65 children attended), award seven $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Romeo High School and to always support LeaderDog to our fullest ability. In fact, this year in addition to our annual contributions, we made a commitment of $75,000 spread over five years to the LeaderDog kennel building project. This spring we also hosted our annual Wild Game Dinner and the second annual District Hearing Aid Program Pasta Dinner. Most recently, we held our Golf Outing that was a great success! As you can see we are a busy club, but there is no other way we would rather be. So in closing, thank you again District Governor Tom, we are humbled and grateful for this award. It has been a great year under your leadership, thank you for all you do and did this year!!

Below are some pictures of our club. This first is our 2014-2015 board and some other important members, the second one was taken at the Car Show which is one of the Peach Festival events. The third one was taken at the Hearing Aid Pasta Dinner.

NEWS FROM DISTRICT 11 A2 GOVERNOR TOM HILL

Casino Trip, Euchre, Pancake Breakfast, Meat Bingo, Eat at this Restaurant-we get 20% of bill, Tote Bags. These are just a few things the Lioness of district 11A2 do to raise money. The Lioness are very active. When I visit them it is so much fun. They have one fundraiser after another. They give to all of the district charities and always meet the Governors Goals. They also support their Lions Club by helping with fundraisers. I am very proud of the Lioness Clubs of MD 11 and Lioness of District 11 A2. They work hard to help the less fortunate and have a great time doing it. Good job ladies, keep it up.

Members are tired of hearing We need members. Take time to look at your club. What is the average age? We are not getting any younger! I urge you to have a CEP program, a Club Orientation. It is disheartening to see what MD 11 will look like in 5 or 10 years. You need to evaluate your club every 3 to 5 years. We all need to work on membership.

It has been great being Governor. I want to thank the 2014-2015 Council of Governors for a great year. It has been my pleasure knowing you. We have had a lot of fun together. Good luck to all. One last thing: No more saying where is your twin? Governor Marty, it has been so much fun traveling and

getting lost together! Governor Tom

DISTRICT GOVERNOR VICKI LAUTZENHEISER - DISTRICT 11 B1

The calendar indicates we are at the end of our year serving as a District Governor. How can this be? I can only speak for myself, but it has been a whirlwind of activities, fun, new friends, challenges and Lionism at its best. I have often heard that PDGs (which I will soon be), means Power Done Gone. I would like to think of myself as Passionate District Governor. I do not think I ever felt like I had some unique power while Governor, unless it was to empower and inspire our great Lions. I like the word passionate because we all have so much more to give and we serve enthusiastically. I am looking forward to getting back to my club meetings on a regular basis, helping with our club service activities and continue to serve with our district and state, helping to promote the opportunities that Lions provide for people to serve and then helping those not able to purchase eyeglasses, hearing aids, or provide funds for Leader Dogs and the like. I am sure, like my fellow District Governors, I learned so much about innovative service projects from our clubs as we visited. It doesnt matter if the club has fewer than 10 members or more than 70, we are all in this for the same purpose.serving. Thank you to the great Lions, Lioness and Leos of MD-11 and SD-10 who serve unselfishly every day to make a difference in their communities.

I would like to end with this poem, written 30 years ago by PDG Herb Carlson from Nekoosa, Wisconsin. It goes like this:

I am a Lion, follow me

Take up the call to serve

I am a Lion, follow me

If, you have the nerve

Follow me as I ring the bell

To ask once more to give

Follow me when I deliver eyes

So a fuller life theyll live

I am a Lion, follow me

Follow me as I share my time

With the elderly and the lame

Follow me as Im welcomed

When I speak the Lion name

Follow me on a walk for sight

It doesnt seem too tough

But try it once with covered eyes

Sometimes the goings rough

I am a Lion, follow me

Follow me upon my journey

To help my fellow man

I am a Lion, follow me

Follow, if, you can.

Highlights of the 2015-2016 International Theme: Dignity. Harmony. Humanity.

Every year, thousands of small cranes cross over the Himalayas at an altitude of 8000 meters for their seasonal migration. These demoiselle cranes are the smallest crane species, and their survival during this grueling migration depends upon the cooperation, teamwork, family structure, and harmony between every member of the flock.

In Japan, the crane has traditionally been a symbol of long life. In the Japanese art of origami, the crane is the most basic form that all children learn how to make. The custom of folding origami cranes is a meditative act that shows the heartfelt wishes of friends and family for the ill to become well again. The crane has also become known as a symbol of peace not only in Japan, but around the world.

Peace, hope, determination, teamwork and uniting people through service are central elements of the 2015-2016 presidential theme Dignity. Harmony. Humanity.

Dignity through Humanitarian Service

One of the basic tenets of human dignity and self-respect is the ability to provide for oneself and for ones family, yet millions of people face the future with little hope of bettering their lives and caring for their children.

Making a difference through service to children will continue to be a main focus area this year by strengthening or expanding our existing programs with the Childrens Dignity Initiative. Under this initiative, Lions are encouraged to expand service to children by:

Supporting and brightening the outlook of children in hospitals

Responding to the needs of children in refugee camps

Addressing the needs of hungry children

Continuing and expanding the Reading Action Program

Those are only a few of the many services opportunities that address the needs of children. More information about the Childrens Dignity Initiative will be available on www.lionsclubs.org.

Serving others. Our legacy of service has been cultivated for almost 100 years. In order to reach our Centennial Service Challenge goal of serving 100 million people between now and June 30, 2018, we must triple our output of service in those areas and continue to encourage clubs to report their efforts via the Service Activity Report in MyLCI. In serving others, we are changing the world and sowing the seeds of harmony, understanding and peace.

Harmony through Cultural Exchange and Joint Global Projects

As an international association, we must understand and appreciate cultures unlike our own. District governors and council chairpersons are encouraged to connect with each other internationally to seek opportunities for joint international service projects. Clubs are also encouraged to participate in this

initiative through our Twinning program. Interacting with members from different cultures and with different points of view will broaden our outlook and provide inspiration for activities in our own communities.

More Members Equals More Service

Our members and our clubs are the heart of our organization, and to continue to serve, we must continue to grow our membership. Our growth depends on many factors, including a dynamic Global Membership Team, effective marketing strategies coupled with membership growth programs, dedicated leaders beginning at the club level, and outreach to women and family members.

Together, we have built our membership to nearly 1.4 million, and must continue that growth to stay relevant in our next century of service. Be open to new ideas, and work with the members of your Global Membership Team and Global Leadership Team to find new ways to promote growth, engage members through service, and develop leaders.

Club Presidents Hold the Keys to Our Success

Club presidents are critical to our success as an association. Each club president will be encouraged to transform the atmosphere of their clubs so that members feel confident and work in unison with each other and their communities.

Ask One Begins at Home

Share your commitment and enthusiasm for Lions with your family members. Families that serve together as Lions establish a family tradition of serving others. The Ask One membership campaign starts at home. If Lions families are on the front lines serving their communities, we will gain the recognition we deserve as the greatest service organization in the world.

LCIF Restoring Dignity, Promoting Harmony, Serving Humanity

LCIF is at the heart of our worldwide service, using grants to create goodwill, eliminate human suffering, and restore hope and dignity for people around the world. Lions are asked to take every opportunity to support LCIF with your generous donations and Melvin Jones Fellowships.

District governors-elect, as we approach our centennial celebration and strive to serve the needs of others, let us always remember to respect the dignity of those we serve; that serving others is not only an act of kindness, but also a means to build understanding and harmony; and that serving humanity is not a duty, but our responsibility.

Fifteen year old Emmanuelle Lo wowed us at the 2015 MD11 State Convention!

During the Memorial Roll Call Saturday Evening the music was provided by Fifteen year-old Emmanuelle Lo who is a freshman from New Buffalo Michigan. The Lions of Michigan were privileged to have Emmie and her father, Dr. Ben Lo join us for the Awards Banquet after her performance.

When Emmie was eight years old she competed in the Hoosier Star Competition in LaPorte, IN and won third place. She has performed around schools, singing and storytelling with her mentor, the late Kathy Zmuda, since she was seven years old. Emmanuelle played the lead role of Amahl in the operetta Amahl and the Night Visitors at the Congregational church in Michigan City in 2009.

In June of 2010, she performed a concert in Kathy and Walt Zmudas back yard to raise money for a music camp. With that money, Emmanuelle was able to go to music camp, as well as pay for a guitar and guitar lessons. With that guitar, she wrote Night of Our Lives, a Christmas song that was released as a video on YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFEoDPscBNk and a single on iTunes with producer Doug Nelson. During the month of December 2011, Emmanuelle made appearances on Windy City Live and ABC World News Tonight to share the story of her song. Emmanuelle loves to sing, and write songs. She plays guitar and piano and in her free time, she enjoys reading, watching Doctor Who, going on tandem bike rides, and swimming.

Fruitport Lions & Leos Come Together For A Local Resident

When a recent resident of Fruitport was diagnosed with MS, she didnt realize how much her life would change. Always a giving person, she found it hard to ask for help. Reaching out to Coach Steve Wilson a with the Fruitport Football coaching staff and a Fruitport Lion member, she asked if a wheelchair ramp could be built due to her declining mobility. Coach could find the labor for the build, but not the funds for the materials. Thats where the newly chartered Fruitport Leo Club came in. They organized can drives, took part in a fundraiser at Five Below and raised the funds for the ramp materials along with an anonymous community donor. As a result ten Fruitport Leos and eight club Lions worked hard to complete a new ramp to assist this local resident in the years to come.

USA/CANADA GRAND FORUM NEEDS YOU!

SEPTEMBER 17-19

GRAND RAPIDS, MI

Planning for the Grand Forum continues to come together. Host Committee fundraising pins are available for $5 each. Details are falling into place for a first class Forum. Planning is on track. Michigan Manpower to pull off the Grand Forum is not.

We remain a long way from our registration and volunteer goals. Lack of formal commitment by Michigan Lions is becoming a critical problem for manpower allocation. I heard many Lions at conventions saying they would register and volunteer. A few walked the walk. So far, most just talked the talk. I have literally heard it over 100 times, yet we still have only about 40 completed volunteer forms submitted to PCC Shepard. For example, Lions told me they were going to work with Sgt. at Arms, but had not and still have not, submitted volunteer forms to the Manpower Committee. If the Manpower Committee does not have your completed form, you will not be in the schedule matrix and you will not receive an assignment. It is irrelevant that you may have told a Host Committee subcommittee you would help when you are not in the database. You are like a person without a Social Security number; you do not exist as a volunteer. Please, please help us by completing and submitting your registration and volunteer forms.

The Forum will rebate $50 to each volunteer registered for the Forum who the Host Committee Chair certifies put in at least 8 hours volunteer time. Rebates should be mailed in October.

The earlier you register for the Forum and as a volunteer, the more likely you are to get your hotel of choice (4 of 6 hotels are connected or within a block or 2 of the convention center). When you volunteer you can choose your day(s) and activity. The earlier you complete and return the volunteer form, the more likely you are to get your preferred date and activity on our master schedule. Not all volunteer opportunities are inside the convention center. We also need people in hotel lobbies, at Welcome Centers, the airport, and to help with set up before the Forum begins. For the Lions of Michigan to show the Lions of the rest of the country and Canada the Grand Forum, we need another 300 volunteers. REGISTER NOW TO JOIN US IN GRAND RAPIDS.

In 2007, the Council of Governors provided the Host Committee $17,000 left over from the constitutional assessment to fund the LCI Detroit Convention for expenses of the Host Committee. We do not have that or any commitment from the COG to help cover our expenses. We suggest a donation of $100.00 per club be made to the Grand Forum payable to Lions of Michigan to help replace the direct state donation. We know that not every club can or will make a $100 donation. We ask each club to do its best to support Lions of Michigan and for those clubs that can donate more to donate more. Send your check payable to Lions of Michigan to Host Committee treasurer, PCC Paul Hemeryck at the State Office.

You can complete the volunteer registration form online at the Lions of Michigan website.
