Chair L’Ecuyer: approval of senate members, unanimous motion passes

Chair L’Ecuyer: For all the clubs that are here today when I call your item. Come to the podium and if you are here for recognition tell us about your club: number of people, what you do, what you wish to accomplish. If you are here for funding come up and tell us what the funding is for, how much, how will this impact the college.

Item A- Club Recognition: Arts and Creative Media Club representative: Troy, Spencer, NicoSpeaker: We want to form a clubs called The Arts and Creative Media, pull together a whole bunch of majors, to give a real life experience for their major. For example, Spencer here is a director of a film he made, it is being published by NAU and sent off to film festivals, and he wants other majors to help him out so I am a business marketing major so I am forming a marketing plan as well as doing a budget for them. We hope to have music majors that aren't in film major but want to help out with scoring or write their own pieces. We want to break down co existing bound-aries between of all the different departments and majors to create this truly collab-orative process, to get out of their comfort zone and try new things, get more orga-nized and professional.

Senator Brown: Is there another club like this?

Speaker: There is a club that is similar but they're more trying to do a network so that you can reach out to those people to work on student and class projects, while we’re trying to do something out of the class boundaries that’s more collaborative than just that network, we don't want to just do film, we want to do music, perfor-mance art, and things like that. We want to see what we can produce.

Senator Brown: What is the purpose, or mission?

Speaker: Our first goal we’re going to do is a stop motion film. We thought that was a good medium to get a bunch of different majors involved because we need the art department, music, we need actors, film majors, need engineers to build sets. Giving a tangible experience.

Senator L’Ecuyer: Any other questions from the senate?

Item B- Club Recognition: Definitely Not Pony ClubClub representative: Eric Dickson Speaker: You can see a previous iteration of our club 2 years ago, pretty much the demographic of this club is friends, pretty much adult people that like to watch the show My Little Pony, we take ourselves very seriously. I want this to be a place for people to network and have fun, with a bunch of likeminded people who like to watch the same show, for whatever reason is there just like the community. And the

Page 3: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

main reason I am here is because I want to get the new incoming freshman a place for them to go, figure out what to do.

Senator Neilson: What happened to the pony club?

Speaker: It pretty much went out of commission, it’s pretty much gone, so I had to restart it.

Senator Martinez: Have you heard members of the student body that want to join?

Speaker: Yes, I already have 5 members, with enough effort I could probably get a group of about 20-25 people.

Item C- Italian ClubClub representative: Sam Dion, Stephanie Lopez Speaker: Currently there are a lot of other language clubs on campus, since Italian is still new to campus, only 3rd year on campus, we’re interested in starting a club for people who would like to learn more about culture and language of Italy. We want to do this by playing games that are popular in Italy, showing movies, playing music, and encouraging the study abroad program that our advisor has been putting on the last 2 years.

Senator Martinez: So it says that you have membership dues, what would those cover?

Speaker: Ee want to start a scholarship for students who want to maybe go to Italy, but maybe not necessarily have the funding for it, but we also want to be able to rent movies and stuff like that. We’ve had issues with The Weatherford downtown that our teacher starts every week, we go hang out at Weatherford to hang out and talk in Italian all together. We want to be able to pay for when The Weatherford will charge us for those events, and go beyond what we already do to try and incorpo-rate more students outside the Italian classes to come join us as well.

Item D - NAU Steel Bridge ClubClub representative: Ryan RostiSpeaker: The club is a group of students who come together for a competition each year, we build a bridge that is 20 feet long depending on the rules set each year and we design, build, fabricate, the whole entire process of the bridge. The reason we want to be a club on campus, not just a subsidy through ASCE because in order to be a member right now you have to pay dues through ASCE, even if you don't want to be involved in that program and the program is very different, ASCE is for network-ing and meeting other engineering firms. The Steel Bridge Club will focus on learn-ing structural design in engineering, this is great because it helps younger engineers become a part of something they wouldn't get their hands on until their junior to se-

Page 4: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

nior year. Some benefits that we have for the club are national recognition through the NAU Engineering Department, if we do well in the competition, it receives ac-creditation from engineering firms. Almost every practicing civil engineer knows what AmericanSociety of Civil Engineers is and this competition. It will increase the interest in steam learning, help engineering students be more involved in what they want to do in the future. For me, I want to be an engineer in structure and design, and there are not many courses or access to that, this is one of the projects that is really great for that. Our other goal is to give opportunity and hands on experience with structural analysis, steel design and construction.

Senator Brown: Is this for the capstone?

Speaker: Yes it’s part of the capstone project, but the focus isn't necessarily on us, it’s on developing a program where everyone can come together for a common in-terest. Senator O’Reilly: What is your outlook on bringing non engineer majors into the club?

Speaker: So I have a list of about 40 people, it ranges from majors of marketing, business management, business finance, international business, electrical, biomedi-cal, criminal justice, all across the field. We did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors because we know you wanted the outreach, so we got that. This is really important to us and we want this to go on for many years to come, we want for the club to get better and better.

Senator Brown: What did the outreach look like?

Speaker: It was…this is what we are doing would you find interest in it? Would you want to consider yourself a part of this is basically how it went down. Everyone seemed really excited about it.

Senator O’Reilly: Are you getting graded on the bridge that you are building, is that what your capstone grade is?

Speaker: No we are not graded on how well we do at the competition we get graded on how well we do for our design project at the school so we are graded on the as-signments that we do in class and that stuff. The competition is something that we do in addition to the capstone project.

Chair L’Ecuyer:And is it not required to attend the conference as the capstone class?Speaker: I am not sure if you have to go to conference for your capstone, I’ve never encountered someone not wanting to go that was on the team, but I’m sure they wouldn't have to because the only process that actually happens at the competition is the loading test and the building, the builders do not have to be on the team.

Page 5: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

Senator Holditch: What are you looking to get out of becoming a club at NAU? Why did you feel like it was necessary to become a recognized club?

Speaker: We have a couple reasons, first one being we didn't like how in order to ac-cept members you had to go through ASCE, go into that to apply to be apart of the steel bridge program, because only a few members were allowed to join each semes-ter because it was like ASCE rules. Also, for the conference maybe we’d be able to re-ceive funding in the future for supporting the school, getting our travel funded.

Senator Clark: So if it wasn't a capstone, could a group of engineers submit to the competition.

Speaker: Yes in this conference there are a lot of different competitions, we just fo-cus on the student engineers, but anyone is welcome.

Senator Nielson: Can you briefly describe what the steel bridge competition is?

Speaker: Yeah so what we do is we design a bridge that’s loaded to a specific rule set, this year it is loaded to 25,000 lbs so we need to design the bridge trust mem-bers so that when it is loaded it doesn't fail, there is a time build competition if it fits in the size envelope it can be used in the bridge. You don't just bring a built bridge, part of the competition is building it, if it fails then you don't pass. Graded based on the amount of bending that happened when it was loaded.

Senator Martinez: Where did you reach out to these people?

Speaker: I went partially in my fraternity, and the engineering department, and I got a few people outside the business building.

Senator Martinez: And what fraternity is it?

Speaker: Kappa Alpha Order

Senator Lee: For your capstone grade, are you graded on your design process and the steps?

Speaker: Yeah we are not graded on how well you do on the competition.

Senator Carr: So essentially the competition is supplementary to the capstone?

Speaker: We are not graded on the competition at all, the competition is a part of it, but the grade is not a part at all. The steel bridge project wasn't always a capstone at NAU.

Senator Brown: So basically the reason why you want to become an official organi-zation is because you want to receive funding to travel?

Page 6: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

Speaker: That is one of the reasons and the other is to get outreach for the younger people in the engineering community because a lot of people drop out their fresh-man or sophomore year, because their classes are very baseline and not what they want to do.

Senator Brown: Are you already doing that?

Speaker: Yes we have 5 mentees that come regularly to all our meetings, and we were only able to take 5 through ASCE.

President Pomeroy: So I understand that you are not graded on how well you per-form during the conference, but since the capstone revolves around building the bridge for the conference if you built the bridge and didn't attend the conference would your grade be negatively effected?

Speaker: Your grade will not be negatively effected.

Item E - Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Club representative: Madison, Ashley VPSpeaker: The focus of WISTEM is to foster community that is encouraging and is a support system for women to pursue in these fields that they’re typically underrep-resented in. If our club gets to a good capacity then we can, if that succeeds we ant toe expand to middle schools and elementary school, we want to outreach into the community and start potentially mentoring high school students to help encourage girls and gentlemen as well to get into these fields, and then if that succeeds we want to take a stab at middle schools and elementary schools because that is typi-cally when some students are told you shouldn't go into that field because you are this gender, or you won’t succeed because you’re not smart enough. Additionally we would be interested in getting speakers just to show where you can take these fields and these interests as a woman and even so we’d like to go to conventions.

Chair L’Ecuyer: You’d be open to both genders?

Speaker: Yes of course, it’s just that women are technically more underrepresented in this field and so thats kind of our main focus, and if men want to join in and help create that network. The focus is to encourage women, but if anyone wants to en-courage, we intend to create information for all these fields.

Item F- SB 29-16: Jocelyn Reyes Speaker: I am requesting funding to present a paper at ASC or the American society of Criminology, I am working alongside Dr. Nancy, we submitted a paper, called “Re-sisting Crimination From Below” and the paper focuses on Spain and the U.S. and about immigration so, for example in Spain there’s a lot of refugees going to Spain

Page 7: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

specifically, a lot of locals, organizations, religious facilities and so forth, trying to get help for more refugees with more people. We submitted the paper to ASC and it’s a nationwide conference in New Orleans. We got accepted, I am coauthor, so just a lit-tle background on ASC, each year there is a different theme, this year is The Many Colors of Crime and Justice. We’re going to be presenting a panel and that’s pretty much it.

Item G: SB 29-17: Student Nurses’ AssociationMary Buckley VPSpeaker: It is part of a national organization, this weekend we are having a confer-ence down in Phoenix, so we’re requesting funding for the cost of admission which is $40 the conference itself will cover a bunch of different technical nursing things which I won’t bore you with. Some related directly to practice as well as the nursing boards which we have to take after we graduate and employers present.

Item H: SB 29-18: UTV 62Santos Barbosas, Katie Speaker: UTV64 essentially an on campus student run TV station and film produc-tion group. So with the TV station side of things we have a program content, channel 62. And on the film side we have a crew that makes a film every semester, this year we are going to be working on our fall film, essentially it is about this girl trying to find her donor dad, and it turns out to be her teacher. We would like to use the funds for catering expenses for the crew, production supplies, we are going to try and rent some production supplies, in order to get funding for that a big bulk of that will be catered, we will have big crews, we are estimating that to be quite a few dollars.

Senator Carr: Where do you get other funds?

Speaker: So last semester when we did this , we have a university account, and we also do kickstart funds, we reach out to family transfers and donors. Those are usu-ally the people who fund us.

Item I: Sb 29-19: Xi Sigma PiMorgan PresidentSpeaker: We’re an honors society within the school of forestry, it’s a national honors society and you can become a member in your junior year, depending on GPA, cred-its, and extra curricular. We are sending members to a national convention, Society of American Foresters in Madison, Wisconsin. There’s on the spot hiring there, posi-tions you can only get if you're at the conference, there are technical sessions which you can attend and it gives you another viewpoint of other ecosystems, beyond Flagstaff. There is also a national Xi meeting where honors societies from schools across the nation all meeting get together. It is a weeklong convention, we would be there Tuesday to Saturday. We are looking for funding for airfare.

Item J: SB 29-20: Ian Stevens

Page 8: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

Senator Brown representing Ian Stevens: I am apologize for my absence, and thank you for letting me be represented by Senator Tyler Brown I am asking for funding to attend the annual Neuro Ethics Conference in San Diego, California on November 10th and 11th, also I am officially representing myself. I am affiliated with the NAU AMSA and the Shiva Bio Ethics Society I was asked to officially represent myself to avoid any conflict in front of you for any of my affiliated clubs. If you have any ques-tions about this, please let me know. In attending this conference I will be able to see the current debates in Neuro Ethics and their major players this will allow me to then begin expanding the area of Bio Ethics and Neuro Science on campus to stu-dents of varied majors, also this expansion will help students on campus as well as those I’ve met with through AMSA currently interested in the medical Neuro Sci-ence. However are having difficulty finding areas on campus to develop their inter-est in the subject. Overall the funding would go mainly towards lodging and gas, the only drawback of the conference is it’s location the hotel and downtown San Diego are not student budget friendly. This is the main reason I need funding, again feel free to contact me about any questions you may have. Thanks again for your time and I apologize again for my absence.

Kristine: So is he representing the club? He’s the president of the American Medical Student Association? It sounds like they asked him not to use their funding, so they could use it for something else?

Chair L’Ecuyer: So at appropriations, and appropriations tell me if you recall some-thing different, he said that he was representing them, but he was not going on be-half of them, although he is in the club, both of the clubs, he is not going as part of the club, he is going on his own, no one else is going except for him, out of the club. And it’s not club affiliated, so it’s like, for NAU Dance Marathon she was going for training for NAU Dance Marathon, so we made her go through her club. But for him he is going to present research?

Senator Brown: Going to learn research.

Kristine: The Bill says I want to focus on as a chair of education and training for the Bio Society, which to me is kind of unusual.

Senator L’Ecuyer: I’m replaying what he told us in appropriations. Approps, do you remember something different?

Senator Olas: That’s correct.

Senator L’Ecuyer: It’s definitely something to think about, and for senators when we get to voting.

Senator Martinez: He also mentioned that he was not going to be able to come today, we also told him that he could table it, so he could explain. Because he did say that they wanted the funding for the specific event that is really important to them.

Page 9: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

Senator L’Ecuyer: Unfortunately a lot of other clubs do too, and we can’t you know be picky and choosey.

Senator Carr: We discussed briefly this issue in Ledge and we see things like this come up so, we can discuss it more now and make our decision. In general figuring out how to handle these things we’re brain storming in Ledge so that we don’t keep having to.

Senator L’Ecuyer: Right it is a larger issue.

Item K: SB 29-21: Badjacks Dance Club Britney RoadySpeaker: We are here requesting funds for our spring showcase. We allow any dancers from any age group on campus to come in and audition for us, so we have a really great group of people from all over, different techniques and stuff like that. So we’d like to showcase them, we actually have booked a date in Ardrey, we want help funding Ardrey and tech and stuff like that, so we can showcase our talent to the community, students, and faculty here on campus. We have done some fundraising for ticketing and stuff like that, we have helped out Ice Jacks, we have currently done ticketing for them and we currently also performed last week for NAU and they also donate money for our fund as well.

Item L: SB 29-22: Pi Beta Phi Speaker: So on October 1st Pi Beta Phi had their Spike Event, which is a big volley-ball tournament that we use to raise money for our philanthropy and since it is an all day event, from 9-5 we got pizza and water from Sodexo for all the players. So we are requesting reimbursement for that.

Item M: SB 29-23: Physics StudentsSpeaker: We are part of a national organization, The Society for Physics Students, and we have a chapter here. We are requesting funding for a trip to Las Cruces, New Mexico this weekend to attend four corners conference. We are requesting funds for gas, hotels, admission, for the 11 students interested in participating. The Four Cor-ners Conference is taking place instead of the normal conference that we usually do every year, where a chapters from around the four corner states, all get together and discuss physics and their work, their laboratories and they get together. This year is a little different, we are doing the major four corners, which happens every 4 years. It is much much larger and it open to the entire midwest. We are going to be discussing physics and engaging in contemporary research in various subfields it is an incredible opportunity for students as it hosts talks presentation, speakers, and research expositions. Students are encouraged to present their work in a profes-sional setting. It allows students to network along peers and professionals across the nation. It is hosted at a participating university, the University of Las Cruces New Mexico. It allows student to explore lab facilities. This trip creates a closer knit

Page 10: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

group of physics majors at NAU, but also it is essential to the process of formulating our post baccalaureate goals, and networking for that experience. The trip is open to any interested students, though right now it is mostly just us physics club kids. We have had several fundraising efforts we’ve worked in the past with Freddy’s Burgers to arrange fundraisers, our next one is happening at the beginning of No-vember. We’ve also presented demonstrations for Flagstaff High School Science and we’ve received donations through that. And we’re also planning on working with lo-cal businesses. We’re still advertising a space on a club banner, unfortunately due to how close the conference is this weekend, the Freddy’s and the banner have not been completed, and we do not have sufficient funds to get us there ourselves.

Item N: SB 29-6: Tatum Bardsley Speaker: I attended a bio engineering conference for medical devices in Minneapo-lis,held by the interface foundation and I just learned about all the research going on in other universities. It was beneficial to me to learn about what is going on in that field because I am doing research here at NAU’s bio engineering facility. And then, I can present my own research at the same conference next year. I also took what I learned about all these different applications in the medical world for like, wound healing, glucose monitoring, different devices to better the wound healing aspect of medicine along with just different things. I took what I learned to spread to other places along campus including the bio engineering club, which I am an officer for, and then just representing my research team here at NAU.

Item O: Bylaw Amendment: Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation ChangesSenator L’Ecuyer: Senator Claus went over every page of our bylaws, and found all of the little errors, human error, that people have made in the past on editing the by-laws, so if you want to explain further on what you did. That’d be great.

Senator Claus: So essentially I made a short list, I changed pronouns to be gender neutral, because we are in a new society and we should be inclusive. I also did grammar and spelling edits, in the bylaws I proposed switching articles 3 and 4 around to reflect the change of command, because right now they are backwards. Lastly, and this is interesting because it was just approved to be on the agenda but I was talking with Lauren awhile back about amending article 10 section 7 which is approving senate clerk, vice chair, and parliamentarian to just approve being the vice chair, because they are elected whereas everything else is hired, so we can talk about that if we want to continue.

Executive Reports

a. President- Vanessa Pomeroy: So kind of a packed report today, last week I attended the parking services board meeting with Kyle and Senator Claus, we had a really interesting time there were good 5 appeals that we listened to so that was fun. I had a different event every night of home-coming to attend so it was a very very busy week for me, but it was super fun. Thank you to Jake and special events, the carnival was fantastic. Thanks to everyone who helped and volunteered we could not have done it without you. It all went really smoothly, we cleaned up super quickly. I submitted my alumni report, for the alumni board for the Friday meeting last week, this Friday, tomorrow I have the mental task force meeting on campus where different organizations meet to discuss mental health ini-tiatives that we’re putting on on campus. Our first committee meeting is tomorrow in the ASNAU Office. Parker and I will be meeting with Dr. Campos, the associate athletic director, tomorrow in the Skydome. Hope-fully our wifi and printers will be up and running soon, and we also talked about my IT things on campus as whole Chantz and him will be able to get to work together. it was a really productive meeting. Finally please share ASNAU on your own social media, It’s On Us Week for example is coming up next week and I would love if you everyone of you would share the weekly ad as well as the daily ad for every event that is going on. The more we share our own events, the more different students are getting the outreach. I know that PR does a good job of posting on the Facebook page, I can’t stress it enough.

b. Vice President of Student Affairs - Parker Schrandt: Pretty quick today, be-fore I came here I was meeting with athletics, for basketball season com-ing up, it’s going to be a really good thing, I think there’s a lot of cool stuff planned. I think it'll be better and more poplar than football season was. There is a football tailgate this Saturday, we need everybody’s help. I sent out another sign up sheet on your Google Sheets you should get emails. CHQ will be doing an inventory check this next week. For sustainability director we are going to leave the applications open one more week, thanks Senator Holditch, for the questions and everything. We are going to be starting interviews the following week after that they will be due on Friday. And then, diversity, Dallas will go more into when she gets her spiel.

c. Vice President of Academic Affairs -Lauren L’Ecuyer: Please welcome Alyssa and Delaney. Welcome both of them. I was going to ask, because it was brought to my attention, that it is kind of odd that we allow people that aren't at senate to be represented by their senator at their senate meeting, like what Senator Brown did today. It has happened a few times this year. I wanted to see what you all tonight about it. If you think that

Page 14: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

it’s more important that they show up themselves or if it’s okay that they send a blurb to their senator to read out.

a. Senator Brown: I think it’s odd, if they really wanted the funding, they would create the time.

b. Senator Lee: We can’t ask them to miss class tough.c. Chair L’Ecuyer: We usually tell them that they can email. d. Senator Holditch: I think it is appropriate, just because we wrote

their senate bills, and have stayed in contact with them so we un-derstand what they’re doing the best, whereas if it were just a friend they might not completely understand. I feel like our job is to understand what they’re doing, so I feel like it makes sense.

e. Senator Claus: I have to agree I feel like we can speak on behalf on individuals but I think clubs should be represented by another member.

f. Senator O’Reilly: If they have class that’s fine, but if it is some other other excuse, we should say in a nice way, ASNAU needs to be a priority.

g. Senator Carr: I think they should have to send a picture of their schedule for proof of being in class.

h. Kristine: Some students need to work to pay for their tuition, so we shouldn't ask for them to take work off show.

i. Chair L’Ecuyer: Let’s do a show of hands without any stipulations, on like class or no class, if you feel comfortable with senators rep-resenting their individual people that they write senate bills for. Can you raise your hand if you feel comfortable with that. (Vote: Unanimous) Bills this week were atrocious, as they have been for the last few weeks and it’s just really unacceptable at this point, it is October 20th, this is maybe the first week, if that, the kind of work that I am seeing, and so if it is this way again next week. I know that all of you have written bills but you will be required to attend apparitions to witness how embarrassing it is to sit there while we edit grammar, spelling, and punctuation of college stu-dents. There’s no better word but embarrassing, ten minutes were spent listening to students on why we had the bills written for them, we want to focus more time on why they are here than grammar mistakes. Just keep that in mind for bills this next week. If you have a question about how to write a bill then you know how how contact me. There are some of you have impeccable bills so thank you but it is majority at this point that have not impecca-ble bills.

j. Senator Brown: Don’t they go through a chain? Do you not read them

k. Senator L’Ecuyer: No I don’t, unless a appropriations changes them I can’d make changes myself. Does that make sense? I don't really have time in my 15 hours week.

l. Senator O’Reilly: Also if you are writing your bills during your of-

Page 15: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

fice hours, there are people in the office, ask them, there’s proba-bly like 3 people at least when you’re in there. Kali is always at the front desk

m. Senator Carr: Maybe we can have them go through the chair of ap-props, overall if it’s missing something, because obviously there is still going to be mistakes

n. Chair L’Ecuyer: I am perfectly fine with little errors, occasionally I would spell a word wrong, but completely not following templates, that’s not a small mistake. I have a fundamental problem when the chair of appropriations or myself have to proof read for errors.

o. Senator Martinez: We do have the time and the knowledge to step up and do better bills because I got a chance to go this Monday and I had no idea that they had to edit so much of it so like Tori said, we can ask people around the office, because they do have to spend a lot of time on it to proofread our bills.

p. Chair L’Ecuyer: If you are representing a club, please go the podium when you present, just so it’s a little more formal. I won’t be at the senate meeting next Thursday I wanted you all to know Senator Carr will be taking my place. If anyone happens to run into the Film Society please direct them my way. I went to Academic Standards Committee two weeks ago with Cindy we had a good talk about academic standards and what policies we have in place and I’m sitting on a committee to work on the bylaws for that committee because they don't have any. That’s it for me.

D. Vice President of Government Affairs – John Bower: Hi everybody, govern-ment affairs department has been hard at work this past two weeks, as we usually are and It’s On Us Week is ready to go, so I am going got give you a quick run down. Monday is going to be coffee and consent, that is going to be from 10am-2pm, in the Union, right outside the hotspot. We are going to have victim witness services health promotions and title 9 handing out re-sources for students. There will be coffee and pastries. Tuesday is going to be the haze and it is going to be featuring a play about unrested rape kits found all over the country, followed by a brief lecture by Henry a solo act. As well as Nicosia and crime lab, to talk about the situation here in Arizona a little bit. Wednesday will be a documentary screening The Hunging Ground, plus a panel discussion in Prochnow, it is going to be walking from south campus to north campus. Thursday is going to be slam poetry night 6pm-8pm in the In-ternational Pavillion. Friday is going to be heath promotions for bystander intervention training. Additionally we are going to have labeling on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to help promote the week and the various events going around Moving on we are going to be planning for opioid addiction awareness week and human trafficking awareness week which will be next semester too, so if you have any suggestions input or anything like that, con-tact me. Senator O’Reilly: For tabling are you going to send out a spread sheet?

Page 16: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

Senator Bower: It’s just if you are there and what want to help, come on down. Senator Desabrais: What time is the event on Tuesday?Senator Bower: 6pm-8pm

E.Chief of Staff- Jake Gavin: The carnival is over, give yourself a round of ap-plause, it went swimmingly, the carnival went very well. We are sorting out details, regarding our contract with Midway I know a couple of you were forced to work on the games themselves John Bower included, thank you John for doing that, and any-one else who was forced to do that. So moving onto IT, as Vanessa covered we had Dr. Steven Barell in our tech meeting, he is going to be the new, Chief Information Officer of the ITS organization on campus. I talked to Chantz and I was able to voice his concerns tot this guy who is planning on implementing a ton of things going on this campus in the next couple months and years. Specifically he is going to be re-hauling my NAU and Louie and that entire online system. Right now it is kind of out-dated interface is digusting, no one likes it, no one even uses My NAU to be honest. He said that is going to be out as soon as he can possibly get it out, they are going to be rehauling the way in which NAU is allowed to make edits to the actual website I know Chantz was extremely irritated with the school because he couldn't make changes that he wanted to to the website. If you are familiar with Wordpress, they are implementing that and they are going to be having that in order to edit the web -site and Chantz is very excited about that, I was talking to him before this meeting. They will be implementing the use of Google apps for administrators, that’s one thing that he said he wants to pin down and also possibly implement it into the new system. Hopefully we see these all take effect soon. Another big thing that John and I were discussing before this was, the ability to log onto to any computer and have the same programs. So that way say if you are an art student you can have all the Adobe Suite on any computer you log on, just right there. You don’t have to come to cam -pus or the library to have those programs. So we have a lot of very very interesting and exciting things to look forward to. Additionally Chantz will be sitting on a board, consisting of students here at NAU to tell the ITS what students want to change and see. A lot of positive changes.Senator Carr: what does google apps mean?Senator Gavin: Google apps is Google Docs, Google Drive…Kirstine: Administrators and faculty will now have access to Google apps as wellSenator Gavin: To move onto NSG is Jack here by chance? No he’s not, okay. So I am just going to go ahead and do Morgan’s report. Unfortunately she couldn’t be here today. No one from NSG is here, but the NSG volunteers were very very useful. They were at the entrance in case you weren’t there. They helped us at the entrance when there was a huge in flow. Morgan says that homecoming went well, despite the problems with the original design we had a lot of fun with the float and working on the carnival. Did anyone attend the carnival with NSG? Senator Olas: Yes.Senator Gavin: Jo how was it?Senator Olas: They are amazing, I love them. They did a great job, they got peoples wrist bands on.

Page 17: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

Senator Gavin: They discussed their future for NSG, what they want to do is, this is all on the drafting board is, but what their thinking of doing is a Christmas party, if that would be possible.Kristine: We should probably do a holiday party.Senator Gavin: Like I said it’s all tentative, they were just thinking of future events they can put on for NSG, and we may get ASNAU involved with it. To move on from NSG to public relations, please share the ads, they will cover what we’ve been doing this week and the special events they’re also going to be covering it. Also congratula-tions special events they did an absolutely fantastic job planning the entire carnival.

Staff Reports

a. Student State Affairs - Angela Garvey, Sydney Stogner, Kaylee Clark: So as John said, we are planning the It’s On Us week for next weeks and we’ve been planning the catering for the events and getting parking permits for the guests that are coming and we contacted the SBS department, so that they could tell the teachers to offer extra credit for students to come to the events. I also went to the Rita Cheng forum. And then, me and Angela have been very focused on It’s On Us week, I am still searching for slam poets I have two on the list and I know Dallas found couple people. It’d be really awesome if you know of anyone that wants to be involved let me know. I messaged Firecreek and they said they would shout out for us, they didn't say they could give me the contact information, but I want to know what they are going to share too. Senator Carr: Is there a po -etry club?

b. Speaker: I think they do still have it, I had some friends, it is hard to find someone who is comfortable sharing about it because it is a sensitive topic. We kind of are opening up a little, because it might be difficult to talk about the sensitive subject. It’s still sexual assault awareness week, so we do want it to be somewhere around that topic. We are also doing a competition for fraternity and sorority life, using a hashtag, I went and spoke with ISC. We have all the vendors finally confirmed and booked so make sure you come out and there will be blue little flags on the lawn. Take pictures with it, that’d be awesome. Just one thing Angela is working on right now is just trying to get the Crime Lab at The Haze which would be an awesome addition to the programs.

c. Public Relations - Kyra Johnson, Angelica Doan, Laura Edgerton: Hi guys, our biggest thing right noe is just It’s On Us week, all you guys should have the weekly ad, and then everyday on social media we will be posting an ad for that specific day. And then if any of your clubs want advertising now would be a good time to send them our way, because we’re not like super busy right now. Any questions?

a. Kristine: Is there a reason why we didn’t have an ad posted for the day of?

Page 18: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

b. Speaker: Well we’ve had them all week there is one that lists all the events.

c. Senator Gavin: Yeah it’s a weekly ad, it shows everything day by day. We figured if we went individually and release 6 ads at once people would be a little flustered and confused. Especially if peo-ple share the ads each day it could remind people that this is going on today.

d. Senator Holditch: What happened to the flyers that we had out a couple weeks. Did you guys not have updated ones?

e. Senator Gavin: Yeah so those flyers were actually out of date, we had to change information related to the events so I’m sorry about that, that’s our apologies.

d. Special Events - Taylor Wesner, Madi Sowerwine: So Madi and I just want to say thank you so much for helping with this carnival it was very suc-cessful nf we could not have done it without you. This week we sent you all an email, just letting you know if you need any help with any events, with your dean or anything, we’d be happy to help with events. We put an email together, any questions about the email? Did everyone get the email by the way?

a. Chair L’Ecuyer: Really quick, we had a recommendation to award you and Madi both the golden pinecones for the week, so congrat-ulations and thank you for all your hard work.

e. IT - Chantz Spearsa. no report

e. NSG- Morgan DeLoachno report

f. Diversity Director- Dallas Diaz: How are you all doing, ok so, I have been

working with ASWY to bring a presentation of the result of the campus climate sur-vey, that’s sent out every second semester. It’s basically to track how LGBTQ, citi-zens of color, citizens of disability are feeling like they have the resources and a space on campus. In everybody’s cubbies I put a flyer, I just had a meeting with ASWY, the person who was supposed to present might not be able to be available so kind of ignore those fliers I have put in there, and then we are going to reschedule it. I mean hopefully they will be able to present that day so we won’t have to worry about anything. This week has kind of been a strange week, I have had a couple dif-ferent situation that were bought to my attention about LGBTQ, violence against LGBTQ students, certain resources available to LGBTQ students being hard to access and kind of disappearing just other things about weird conversations in class with professors. I was hoping to do advocacy week, because of all these other things that have been popping up I am responding to that, This week I was talking to Kevin, downstairs in Student Life about how I could help to bring LGBTQ awareness and discussions, as well as discussions about vulnerability and masculinity, and such af-

Page 19: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

ter the violence that happened this week. Next week diversity committee will be meeting at 8am. That week we will be talking about what we want to do for action week, and what we kind of want to be seeing. Starting the week after that Dr.Phelps and I have been working together to create a student committee, we’ve been helping to write a strategic diversity plan, so I’ll be seeding all that in the mail. Also next month we are hoping to bring a professor performer here just before Thanksgiving, they are an activist within the trans and queer community, they are a poet, actor, they have a whole acting troop, so hopefully we can bring them here. So students who are in the community and don't have homes to go to for Thanksgiving or a home at all to go to for Thanksgiving can have a little celebration before. Finally I would like to thank Vannesa and John for helping with It’s On Us week and voter registration. We’ve really started this semester with students having a voice and speaking out.

Committee ReportsA. Appropriations Committee

Senator Olas: Just really make sure your bills are prefect as possible. As senator O’Reilly said have another senator check it or the front desk ladies. I used to get everybody’s senate bills emailed to me, but I haven’t gotten anyones, I am not mad if you do that, if you send me your bills. Chair L’Ecuyer: To tack onto that I just want to give you all an update of the budget, so so far we actually paid out our $2,063 which is about 1% of our budget, but that’s just the people who have come and actually got their check. Money that we have allocated is $18, 934 which is about 10% of our total budget, which is pretty exciting. So that’s not including this week and we gave out a lot of money this week, so in 2 weeks again I’ll come back and present you another budget, but just to give you a little comparison in 8 weeks how much we spent is 10%, so that’s about $2366 per week. So in the whole scheme of things it’s really good we’ve given out a lot of money and we have a lot left and it doesn't look like we are go-ing to freeze anytime soon, so good job.

B. Legislative CommitteeSenator Overturf: We are still continuing to work with the alcohol policy a little bit. We are trying to see if there is any way we can fund club events at venues like Firecreek or The Orpheum kind of the sam stuff we’ve been talking about. Senator Claus has been kind of spear heading that, she has been going to meetings she showed up to Ledge with a full on Powerpoint to present to us. Thank you so much.

College of Arts and LettersErika Desabrais- I wrote a new bill and then my dean write up. And

then I have a question, for appropriations do you want us to send you a bill?Senator Olas: That’d be niceChair L’Ecuyer: Just go ahead and cc Senator Olas, let’s just go ahead

and do that.Monica Overturf- I wrote a bill this week, the Improve group has a

performance or something they’re doing on Sunday Chair L’Ecuyer: I believe it is in Cline library, the Naughty Bits. It is

fun and funnyCollege of Social and Behavioral SciencesAshley Beghtol- We had our dean meeting two Fridays ago, it was re-

ally cool, I got to meet her, and we’re working on a lot of stuff.Fernanda Wolburg Martinez - I went to the green fee form, that was

interesting to see how they presented to students, and I think they did a good job of it, I also had the opportunity to go to appro-priations that was also a fun experience, they were peer reviewing essays. We met Karen, we’re working on dinner with the dean, and we’re working on the application.

Senator Olas - I have a lot to tell, I went to the sports club council meeting, I just told them exactly what the 23 fee offers to them, I printed out hard copies so every representative could have one. Basically like the first email. I am going to give some highlights to my clubs. The gymnastics Club is going to be practicing with the ASU Gymnastics team. And then the Unicy-cling Club is practicing the unicycle basketball, if they can get it down they might be at half time. In the process of the dean application, dinner with the dean, and then I’m stealing Mr. Gavin’s idea, you did a forum of ASNAU peo-ple and the club representatives and I love that idea, so that’s going to be happening again. So if anyone wants to help me with that. Also I am doing an enhancing conversation presentation, I will go into that on November 3rd. Lastly ultimate frisbee told me that one of their receipt, some of them are prepaid but they didn't know they couldn't turn in prepaid receipts like for gas. They’re bummed about it, because they might not get that funding.

Chair L’Ecuyer: So, there is nothing we can do after it is prepaid. This is definitely something you should tell your clubs when they are trying to get reimburse. There is no way to go back and see how much was actually spent in gas, and so there is no way to reimburse those people, it does list that in the reimbursement process and Kailey is really fine-tuning it and making sure that it makes sense for everybody, but in the meantime just make sure if it says gas in your bill, let them know that they can’t do that. Thank you for bringing that up.

Senator Holditch: So how does that work then, should we calculate miles, pay at the pump?

Chair L’Ecuyer: It is different with cash than card.

College of Health and Human Services

Page 21: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

Leah Claus- I did some research I have a meeting with those two on the 31st. Hopefully it goes through to you.

Matt Nielson- We have donuts with the dean coming up, we haven’t set it in stone yet but most likely it is going to be November 22nd.

College of EducationKailey Lee- We have a dean meeting next Friday and that’t it.Natalie Carpenter- No report.College of BusinessTyler Brown- I actually have a big report, me and Senator O’Reilly

have tried to plan donuts with the dean for like this Thursday but it needed to be ready for a week in advance and we weren’t ready, so we’re doing it next month some time when everyone is available. Other than that I wrote my first bill, so mine was probably one that you were talking about, but the actual was going around, with Senator Brown. First and foremost, students they want to feel like they're heard. I told them that was our purpose as sena-tors. And the number 2 thing that was really major, that kept coming up was that they said they don't know what ASNAU is. Some students said they don't even know who the president is, I think that’s really important, I think we should possibly host an event so that people know who President Pomeroy is. I think that’s really important for them to know our roles on campus. They think we just host a concert every year and that’s it. I had some students come with some more specific issues, they want to see how we can use the construction of our campus, in a more constructive way. Some pole are look-ing at how can we get a cultural center inserted of just having a tiny little of-fice for students because there are 5 different cultures that meet in one cen-ter, but that doesn’t represent all cultures. Students also feel like it’d be im-portant for freshman to have diversity training before they come to NAU, and so the LGBTQ disables peoples of our society as well as underrepre-sented cultures, that can look like NAU my student body people. Also stu-dents also want to be informed, they weren't formally informed when ASNAU positions were opening up. But they knew of a person who was inducted in, or hired in.

Chair L’Ecuyer: It kind of depends on, there are a few different ways you can go about it and in the bylaws it doesn't stipulate it. It is an appointing process, and it is hiring process. If somebody does vacate their position at ASNAU, it’s not necessarily a hiring process.

Senator Brown: They want to know about the hiring process. That’s the basis of the first report. Tune into gnbtv- gold and brown tv.

Senator Gavin: I do appreciate your comment but I actually raised my hand because I think that you guys should collaborate. Because last year that was one of my sole intents, answering those questions that students have, ac-tually making sure that students know what ASNAU is. I know that coming from an outside perspective a lot of students don't know who we are or what we do. I recommend that you collaborate on either one event or tow events.

Senator Claus: We need to have a forum this semester, is there any way we could do that?

Page 22: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

Chair L’Ecuyer: Yes definitely, I need to see Stella, Fernanda, Tori, Jo, and Tyler after this meeting, just up here really brief. And if anyone is inter-ested in doing a forum come up here afterward as well. Those are just the people that have reached out.

Tori O’Reilly- So I think the whole what is ASNAU thing is a great idea, I really like that I think it’ll clear up a lot of thoughts, not a whole lot, just weekly emails. I have a couple things in my head to meet up with all my clubs before the semester ends one more time. One of my clubs just went to a con -ference, haven't asked for funding yet, so waiting for that assuming that they will.

College of Engineering, Forestry and Natural SciencesSarah Holditch- i did go and attend the president forum, i was kind of dissatisfied with her answer, she told me that a lot of the growth was not happening on NAU campus, a little setback by that and frustrated, i have an event i have been planning for the green a

Alyssa Anderson - i sent out my email saying i am a new senator, I have heard a lot of good things about you guys this year so I am ex-cited to work with you.

Stella Carr- I sent out a survey today to try to get interest in our dinner with the dean, kind of a preliminary application we are still trying got finalize the details of it with a secretary but we wanted to get the ball rolling. I went to the president’s forum and the Bernie Sanders rally, that was cool. I was brain storming some tailgate incidents. Add in to the bylaws ways to make them more engaging. Is there a way we can make more pinecones, so you keep them?Chair L’Ecuyer: I have no problem with having a plethora of them, it is a little more prestigious when only one person has a pinecone at a time but I like sharing the wealth so totally an idea I’m open to.

Stella Carr- What about the new jackets?

Chair L’Ecuyer- We haven’t gotten them yet, but if you want to make a design then you can by next Thursday.

Stella Carr- I created a petition to get a Trader Joe’s in Flagstaff. So spread the Trader Joe’s love.

Senator Holditch- So I did go and attend the president forum, it was really interesting. I asked Rita Cheng about future sustainabil-ity, and I was kind of dissatisfied with my answer, she just kind of pushed it to the side. I asked her about growth and sustainability.

Page 23: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

She told me that a lot of the growth that was occurring was not on NAU’s campus. I’m a little set back by that and frustrated but it’s alright. I am not going to be able to stay for the entire senate meet-ing I will have to duck out a little early I have a seminar for the Green Jacks.

Advisor Reports (Cindy Anderson and Kristine Heflin)

Cindy Anderson— I would like to also thank Senatora Olas and Claus for at-tending the bystander training. As president of the senate L’Ecuyer said we both share membership of the academic committee, there are some major performance issues here with administrative performance. I will be looking to make sure those procedure give you the same guarantee that you have from any state agency. It is really about when you lose a property right just being a student. That’s not quite endemic of a policy and there’s some other timeline problems and I will be meeting faculty to do that and I will likely come to you, to do a compare and contrast of what it is now. Just for you to say, does that sound like a procedure, for how academic dishonesty happens. Speaking of places where we can really use your input. You already heard from President Pomeroy how extremely interesting it is to hear about peo-ple’s parking bills and them disputing them. Maybe even more interesting than that is the planning in parking and shuttle services on campus. Parking and shuttle services is looking for 2 representatives to serve on the advisory committee they will meet next Friday from 2-3:30. For those of you who may have a vested interest in transit shuttle you can go. It is very possible that that parking lot is going to be a residence hall. They definitely want people to hear about what is going to happen with that. The rumor is, it has to go to the board in January, it could be an Honor’s college.

Senator Lee

Senator Beghtol

Kristine Heflin— I’m really happy the carnival went well, and happy home-coming week is over. On a serious note, we did have some students at the end of the carnival come and share with us that they had an experience with one of the ride operators where the ride operators where they said some in-appropriate and sexual and they felt really uncomfortable. I just wanted to let you guys know that we have addressed this to our vendor and she said that they have terminated that staff member. It is really important that if we did hear stuff like that happening at events we host that we take care of it.

Senator Carr: If something were to happen with someone, who would they report to?

Cindy: Contractors need to abide by the rules. But if it does happen go to whatever feels comfortable, student life, human resources, but they’ll get the

Page 24: Web viewWe did present this to you before and we got a huge list of a bunch of different majors ... Tatum Bardsley . Speaker: I ... There’s no better word but

report to the right place. But construction workers doing cat calls, is not ok, w

Kristine: Whenever we work with vendors we want to know all those kinds of things by vendors that we hire. I think we have had good experiences with our vendor. We are going to have a meeting the Thursday before Thanksgiv-ing, many students take the entire week off, but don't leave town. One last thing, October is disability heritage month, you might see signs around cam-pus. We have funded some of their events this month, their lose theme this year is athletics and disability so they have been doing some stuff around that. They are going to be showing a movie Wednesday night in Cline, it is a movie called Cinemability, the director is going to Skype in. Another thing that will be really cool, they are hosting a seated volleyball tournament, that was in the email that I just sent to Lauren. There will be teams from all over, October 27 from 7-9pm, next Thursday, and there will be prizes.

Chair L’Ecuyer: I am going to forward that email to all of you. Please send it out to all your clubs.
