December 3th, 2017 Advent 1WELCOME TO WORSHIPWe are happy that you are here to worship with us and pray that the Lord bless you through his Word in your time with us.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask one of the greeters or anyone else who looks like they know what’s going on.

Signs for the restrooms are near the table in the back of the entryway. Parents, we know how hard it can be to get to church in the morning

and are so thankful that you have brought your children. We enjoy hearing children in worship, but we also understand you may want to take them out. There is a small nursery room out the back doors to the right.

SERVICE OF THE WORD AND SACRAMENTOur worship follows an order (liturgy) that centers our attention on listening to God’s Word, recounting what he has done for us, and praising his name. This basic order has been the foundation of worship for centuries in the Christian Church.

INVOCATION

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

From our sins and fears release us, let us find our rest in Thee

P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAYM: Let us pray.

Stir up your power, O Lord, and come. Protect us by your strength and save us from the threatening dangers of our sins; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.C: Amen.

THE WORD OF GODTHE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 64:1-8The God who rends heaven and who makes mountains quake, is also the God who came to earth to save us, he is our God.1 Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!2 As when fire sets twigs ablaze and causes water to boil, come down to make your name known to your enemies and cause the nations to quake before you!3 For when you did awesome things that we did not expect, you came down, and the mountains trembled before you.4 Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived,no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him. 5 You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry. How then can we be saved?6 All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.7 No one calls on your name or strives to lay hold of you;for you have hidden your face from us and have given us over to our sins.

8 Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.

VERSE OF THE DAY Revelation 22:20P: Alleluia. He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Alleluia.C: Alleluia, Alleluia! Come quickly Lord Jesus, come. Alleluia.

THE GOSPEL Matthew 21:1-9As Jesus entered Jerusalem those in the city asked, “Who is this?” When he returns again, Christians will know who he is, he is the Christ, the one who saved us from our sins.

1As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”

4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:5 “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7 They brought

the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

of all that is,seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures.He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.
